During the time when the opera play was written(about 1800s), being fat was a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
I don’t think “fat lady sings” is fat shamming at all since it traces back to the opera where people had a different perspective of a fat lady than they do now.
This made me laugh and smile. So wonderful to find content that’s so real and wholesome :)

The list of references isn't complete without Bianca Castafiore from "The Adventures of Tintin" (Hergé), but I don't remember, that the phrase “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings!” was ever used in one of the comics.
There is/was a band called The Fat Lady Sings, and that's what I thought I was going to get here - who they are/were. I have their CD and particularly like their song "Alien."
I always think of Kate Smith, singing "God Bless America" at Phila Flyers games back in their glory days.

You left out the important fact that the German composer Richard Wagner was a hero of the German Nazies.
I don't see how associating fat ladies with operas is fat-shaming. Some women are too skinny and some women are too fat.
Same with some men. My grandchildren have four cats, one is twice the size of others. It is more aggressive than the other cats and bullies them, just as fat people are often bullies. Our wit is sometimes our only defense against people who are too fat.

"Fat-shaming" is the only social justice issue I will never get on-board with and actively discourage. Obesity in Australia is at epidemic levels and it's a very serious and expensive health concern. Being obese *should* be shameful. Eat right. Get exercise. Be healthy. Encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, nit-picking a turn-of-phrase under the guise of a history lesson will do little to endear people to this cause as it just underlines the notion that left-leaning folk offend too easily and are more focused on censorship and whinging.
