    • @EthanObi
      @EthanObi 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      That's because Logitech and Apple have an anti-consumer (And anti-competitive) licensing deal that makes them the only two manufacturers allowed to use the Smart Connector on the back of the iPad Pro/Air; ALL other keyboards are forced to use Bluetooth, which has an intentionally limited polling rate cap set at a software level by Apple.
      It's the same reason Logitech is the only third party manufacturer with a MFi Certified Apple Pencil Alternative; A similar deal was in place between Belkin and Apple in regards to MFi authentication chips, (And by extension, 15w speeds) on MagSafe when it was "re-"introduced on the iPhone 12.

    Warning to anyone buying one: the rubber deteriorates over time, which causes it to warp around the speakers and flake off in parts where your hand oil accumulates. It got so bad with mine I felt self-conscious around clients and eventually contacted Logitech to either get a refund or replace it. They replaced it, but I don’t think most folks should use one. Just hoping to help someone dodge a particular bullet.

    A kind of “hack” is if you want to want to make it more lap friendly is when you flip the keyboard over with the keys facing the back on the iPad, you can use the kickstand and pro it up using the space between the keys. It still gives you so many viewing angles plus it’s pretty sturdy. I bought the 1st generation when the m1 iPad Pro came out and this is where I learned about the lap hack. I used it for years and it didn’t damage the keys and everything worked as it should. Great review. I'd like to see a future video for your long-term opinion.
    I'm worried about the durability. I have the previous combo touch for the iPad Pro 11", but I changed it to the magic keyboard after year and a half. I chose the combo touch because of the function keys, the durability and the extra protection. The outer material is durable enough, but the rubber got loose on some parts. The keys got mushy with time and the "T" key broke and now I can't type comfortably. The ergonomics were not great, my head has to look down for long period if I'm using it on a desk (the magic keyboard's higher up position avoids this).
    Also, it was too heavy for long handheld usage.

    I loved this keyboard. BUT it had 1 big problem for me that I don’t think I will try one again. My issue with the previous generation is that the rubber stretches and warps around the hole port/speakers after a few months. Google it. I had Logitech replace it under warranty, but the replacement started warping within a month too. I think they made it a little better by making small holes around the speakers, but the charging port hole warped as well. Everything worked fine, but it was aesthetically ugly. Drove me crazy. Unless Logitech improved the quality of the rubber they used, I think this will happen a lot.

    Hopefully the material isn't cheap this time. I bought one for my M1 12.9 and the rubber of the case around the vents started stretching out like big hoops. Never pulled on the rubber in that area or played with it and never even took the iPad out of the case. Ended up getting it warranty replaced, but the replacement had the same issue. Now that I have had it for about 2 years, the rubber actually started disintegrating 😵‍💫. At one time I even found melted rubber residue stuck to my iPad. This is a device that is in an air conditioned home 24/7. My sister had the same issue with her iPad Air Combo Touch and the warranty rep she reached out to refused to replace hers. Just a heads up.

    • @oevers
      @oevers 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They silently changed that over the last few months by adding more rubber around the speaker. There isn’t a big hole for the whole speaker part anymore, now there are small holes for every hole of the speakers.

Despite my complaint, the kickstand case is a must have for me. No one else makes one like it for the 12.9 Pro. I hardly ever even use the keyboard but I'm willing to pay $200+ just for that darned case, that's how much I love it.

    Logitech actually address the issue with the holes for the speaker grills for the M4 model. In previous versions, the speaker hole/grill would warp outward and sometimes would break if you kept removing the iPad from the case. The rubber also flaked and scratched as well. The buttons for the case are all rubbed off when I used it extensively for two years. I feel like they should have kept the woven-like fabric of the previous models as it kept its colour and did not scratch.

    I really appreciate your video and largely agree. I just purchased the iPad 13” pro with the apple keyboard and I am disappointed for a few reasons. Before I get into the reasons, what is the solution for the pencil with the logi case? I found that the pencil falls off easily when bumped…so i purchased an add on protector, which works fairly well. Issues with apple keyboard: 1) poor balance - easily tips to the back. 2) pencil solution will result in a lost or damaged pencil when bumped 3) hard to use on airplane - i just went to Europe and back and just wanted to watch videos on the iPad, but the keyboard is way to long, so I needed to detach the keyboard…but then there is no support for the iPad. Believe the kickstand would have helped me. In summary, I believe the logi is better in all regards, except for a question mark regarding the pencil. Thoughts?

    great that they made the case portion lighter and thinner. the combo touch for my iPad pro 10.5 added too much bulk and weight to my iPad compared to the logitech slim combo case I had on it before it but after a few years i'm just alright with slipping it out of the case when i want it to feel lighter and thinner while using. I never use the keyboard (which I got before I got an apple silicon Macbook) except for fun. Screen is too small, keyboard is slightly narrow and I don't really do any work that requires me to type much. I got mine for £90 which is a steal for the package. Hi ! Thanks for the review . Can you tell us what is the weight of the protective case alone without the keyboard ? To know how much it would affect the experience of using the ipad in "tablet mode" handheld ? Because the tablet itself is already pretty heavy .. also do the keyboard still function properly when detached from the ipad ? For exemple is it possible to let the ipad stand in portrait mode against something to see more of a page document for exemple and still type text with the keyboard detached from the tablet ? thanks in advance if you take the time to answer . Good continuation !

    Once the rubber on the sides of the case side breaks, and it doesnt take long, the keyboard size becomes useless. You cant buy just one or the other.

    Have one for the 13” Pro - it’s pretty nice. Didn’t expect it to be as premium as the MK, but it’s close enough. That trackpad is HYUGE! Tried the MK in an Apple Store, and it definitely is top-heavy so the LCT footprint is a trade off I’m willing to accept. The fact that you can flip the keyboard with the keys inside is key. Hope Dbrand or someone makes skins for this keyboard.

    If the case forces you to buy new wires, that has to be factored into the cost. Sounds like the Apple keyboard is better simply because it works with any cable. outside of that, it looks really good.

    Great video, didn't even know they made a new version for the latest iPad Pro's. I have the combo touch for my M1 iPad Pro, and loved it but my only downside that I want to point out is the trackpad; while yes it does work...I feel like sometimes it is not as accurate (skips around when navigating)...etc. compared to the MK. Hopefully this issue is addressed on this version; I know quite a few folks complained about this in the past.

    Awesome review! Question. I noticed you are testing the kick stand on your table with a felt surface, showing the ability to set it to various lean angle. Have you tried this on a more slippery surface, like glass or wood table tops? While I'm sure a near vertical lean angle should be no problem. I'm just wondering if the hinge on the kick stand is stiff enough if the iPad was lean down to a very low angle. Thanks!!

      I have this case for my 2021 iPad Pro 11‘‘ and the kickstand is definitely strong enough. Though I have to say that after a few months of use the rubber that holds the iPad in expands a little bit, especially around the speaker cutouts. There is no drawbacks in terms of function just doesn‘t Look as nice.

    Apple’s own Smart Keyboard that came with the original iPad Pro would connect to the magnetic connector on the edge, via the flexible tape, just like this one. It was a nightmare - for some the tape would brake within months from purchase. Personally I”ve burned through 2 keyboards in a year. This is the very reason why Apple moved the connector to the back and created the first Magic Keyboard with a robust hinge, instead of a flexible tape.
    I’m sad to see Logitech had decided to simply bypasses this solution, only to bring back the less reliable connector. I’m still looking for a viable alternative to the Magic Keyboard.

    I am a fan of Logitech products but the biggest reason to choose the Combo is cost. Except for that choose the Apple product. The ease of removing the iPad from the Magic Keyboard is a better design that sees the iPad into your hand quickly without the weight of the case.

    The Logitech Combo Touch is really a good product, and I like the fact that the keyboard can be removed. And this time, it seems much less chunky, lighter and with a bigger trackpad : Logitech did an excellent job 👍. It is really pity that Apple iPadOS is so limited, as otherwise it could clearly be a laptop replacement.
    Future improvements I wish to see from Logitech are :
    1. Keyboard works through Bluetooth when unplugged
    2. On each side of the magnetic strap that attach to the iPad, there should be a USB-C power pass-through port.
    3. The magnetic strap should be strechable to accommodate the Apple Pencil at the bottom, when closed, to secure it for transport.

    This time around the Apple Magic Keyboard actually looks like a better deal.
    The previous Combo Touch only cost around £120 new, now it costs £250, while the Magic Keyboard is at the same price its always been (£350) despite all the improvements its gotten. Im concerned over how long the Combo Touch will last, as even in my experience with the old Combo Touch, dirt gets stuck in all of the different crevices in the trackpad and where the keyboard connects, and i’ve had issues with the trackpad and keyboard working recently. You’ve also got to deal with the rubber slowly degrading on the combo touch, which leaves bits of dirt on the screen. The thinner design on the new iPad Pro also makes me worry more about the case potentially causing the iPad to bend over time.
    I think for the extra £100, a more laptop-like experience with aluminium palmrests, improved keyboard, haptic touchpad, new function row, USB passthrough, better compatibility with USB C accessories, and overall more durable design the Magic Keyboard looks like the better option.
