This guy is just incredible. He's not Waylon, he's Sturgill. I wish people would stop comparing the two, he's good enough to stand on his own two feet. I hope the rest of the country genre starts acknowledging this man.
+Mitch Davis We know he is not Waylon, it is a compliment to be compared to Waylon, nothing wrong with that. It is great that we have some people in country that remind us of the old outlaws.
When a man can display his talent with just an old Martin guitar and his voice, just enjoy the magic that happens with some the finest musicians in Nashville.
WhiteRussianrock he posted on Instagram like... Last year about how he loves being able to walk down a crowded bourbon street without ha ING one person recognize him.
It was made clear the country music industry doesn't want him to be the face when they didn't televise him winning the Grammy for best country album of the year. His speech included a line something like, "I guess the revolution will not be televised." He didn't look happy. He also stood outside the CMA awards and busked with his Grammy displayed in his guitar case. This guy is a legend.
Built by tradition but certainly not bound by it; Sturgill is most definitely the antithesis to the plastic chart-derby dullards currently coming out of Nashville (obviously there are some other admirable foot soldiers). Heck of a voice, moving songs, makes covers his own, quite the picker - he's got it.
Nailed it Daniel. Well spoken. This is what “real” talent looks and sounds like. Taking it back to the roots of music where it belongs. Not the trash that’s being crammed down the throats of the majority these days. Attempting to listen to what’s called radio today gives me a headache and he need to throw up.
When I first heard Sturgill, I thought he sounded a little like Waylon. Now that I've listened to him for awhile, for the life of me I can't hear it anymore. It's just Sturgill.
You just described to a "T" my own experience. Actually right after hearing this (Medicine Springs) I said to myself something like ... "SS is the real deal, his own man". PS I think Waylon was the best there ever was. Sturgil is legit though. We get to witness him in his prime years too!
Sturgill is old school bluegrass and country with a little rock mixed in. He is the best so far that is new on the Sean. Like Chris Stapleton but Love Sturgill!
@Travis Nunnally 😂 Im not sticking up for Aldean, but exactly what would you expect a musician armed with a guitar to do against a man with a rifle no one could see?
@Travis Nunnally well I'm pretty sure the crowed realized what was going on before he did. But again I'm not expecting anyone to do anything but run and get outta the way. If people went above and beyond that their exceptional people but I don't expect that out of everyone. I can't fault someone, hellanyone for seeking cover in gunfire.
Every cover he has ever done sounds like an original and that is kick ass! I would imagine Ralph Stanley would be proud!! Once in a generation musician/songwriter.
Sturgill Simpson is the best thing to happen to music in a while. It shows that you can make great music, stay true to your beliefs and people will find you. Great stuff Sturgill
From Canada, he stopped in London Ontario. I had only heard of him 2 days prior and he was phenomenal, glad there are still artists like him out there.
Had the honor of being in front row last night as he performed this song and many other amazing tunes. These guys play like no other and I have never seen a performer give so much appreciation to his band. One of the best shows and characters in this country. Pure talent and we are grateful for them gracing us in Kansas City last night. Met the man and he is a true and phenomenal person.
I just found out, this song was originally from Ralph Stanley. And so is Poor Rambler, another one of Sturgill's songs. I am in no way discrediting Sturgill, after all Americana and Folk music is the music of the people. To be able to be an individual to contribute to the overall storyline that Americana and Folk create for this country is an honor. Thanks Sturgill for reinventing this music and making your contributions to these genres and Country music!
anyone who can do a cover better than all who performed it before is down right real and true to his craft. to pay homage and respect go Stanley is awesome! especially the boosgeois that talk that shit that covers are weak... and this guy doin a big publicity gig while having sinus problems is bold. but even better, he fights through and sounds great! glad to see your where u are these days sturge! u are the man who single handedly got me back into country, who left it on the table back in the 90s
All the way back in 2013, so why the hell did it take me until 2015 to find him. Possibly the greatest authentic country singer we've had since Waylon and Merle yet you wont hear him on the radio because the new sounds all the rage..
I visited Alcatraz in San Francisco for the first time earlier this year. I’ve lived in Northern California most of my life and never went. Go figure. When I hear this song, particularly that last verse regarding the letter he can’t read and the jailhouse, it takes me back to those concrete walls and jail cells. I know why it does, but no idea why it’s so vivid. The verse isn’t rich in detail, but it grips me. Like a part of me was there before. Weird. Absolutely love this performance, gonna try and learn to play and sing it.. maybe one day go back to Alcatraz and play it inside.
Just found Sturgill Simpson a few weeks ago, I've listened to this song as well as Water in a Well repeatedly. Simply amazing, sold country music. Sturgill has a sound of his own and we love it.
I just started listening to this mans music. I'm blown away! I've also hipped a couple of my friends to Sturgills music. This is some good shit! Next time you come to Dallas, Texas I'll be there.
This is good country music. I wish I could start a label for real music. Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, and many more that we'll never here on mainstream radio
vwmailmanrob you do here Chris Stapleton on the radio just not his voice the guy is a legend do you realize half the guys out today have songs written by true country artists it's just the way company's change the songs to be worth radio time when really they are good country tunes just a bunch of teens and trolls looking to score likes in the comments in fact your no better then the record company's that make the millions off crap
Sturgill is something special. yes, he reminds me of a new age Waylon (with a bit of Van Morrison) and I don't think anyone can deny that but, he is just who he is... sturgill. He and others like him (I.e. Cody jinks, Jamey Johnson, whitey Morgan, Chris Stapleton, Jason edy, Cody Johnson and many more are bringing country back to where it belongs....down with the crap on the radio that they call pop country, there is no true talent on the radio anymore and the best of the best are never played. I guess it's why we follow the outlaws, they are true to their words and never sell out to please anyone...they just write and play true music....
Stephen Turner what a great way to simply describe this haha. I play some kinda version of this cover everytime an acoustic is in my hands. Sturgill is the man
I just started istening to him last month. I don't usually like Counrty BUT, I love Sturgill's music the best of all. This specific song is amazing. I couldn't believe anyone could sound so good, so in depth delivery. I'm a fan and purchasing a bunch of his stuff now.
This dude is better than Waylon ever THOUGHT of being. I'm not a huge country fan, but I'm very impressed with Sturgill. Take a listen to "All around you" Waylon's songs NEVER had that kind of depth.
I wish he would release a studio version of this, this is country soul.
This is one of the greatest song performances, ever recorded. He couldn't have did it any better than this
Appalachian passion + talent = Sturgill Simpson
This guy is just incredible. He's not Waylon, he's Sturgill. I wish people would stop comparing the two, he's good enough to stand on his own two feet. I hope the rest of the country genre starts acknowledging this man.
+Mitch Davis We know he is not Waylon, it is a compliment to be compared to Waylon, nothing wrong with that. It is great that we have some people in country that remind us of the old outlaws.
+don guyton
It is not a compliment if you believe that Sturgill sings way better than Waylon.
Mitch Davis I hope they don't acknowledge him. I like him much better this way.
Piss on the rest of the "Country Music Genre" They're mostly puppets anyway. Sturgill is a Badass!!!!
Mitch Davis Amen brother
This is country music. Wake up Nashville. Awesome Sir.
Brandon Howard They don’t need shithole Nashville, nor do they want Nashville anymore
Travis Nunnally Ray Wylie Hubbard check him out! Drunk poet
Sturgil does a good job on this song... Always been one of my favorite bluegrass songs, Ralph Stanley does it awesome as well
Yea Nashville can suck it, this guy is one of the few thats so incredible his music is best live or unpolished by the studios
@@calboggs744 you are right , this is country. That's all good night
When a man can display his talent with just an old Martin guitar and his voice, just enjoy the magic that happens with some the finest musicians in Nashville.
This is some Grown Ass Man Shit right here. Loving Sturgil's tunes!
Does it better than Ralph Stanely. Or close.
Derek Hoyt's Music Hahahahahahahaha best comment ever and so damn true

It's a Ralph Stanley song but he covers the f*** out of it for sure!
Takes balls to cover
Dr Ralph Stanley"""
Sturgill KILLS IT
2019, and still, i've heard nothing better... Sturgill slayed this.
2020, still the best. Using this to escape Covid-19 bullshit.
He’s so good I heard he might release a record this year
If this man was around 20yrs ago he would already be in the country music hall of fame right next to all the greats
He's in give it time. Baddest railroad worker.
We drove 5 hours to see him. Would've driven 12. He is a rarity in this life.
i second this statement
Trav B if he ever tours again. Shits gonna sell like hot cakes
This is one of the greatest song performances, ever recorded. He couldn't have did it any better.
I'm obsessed with this guys music started listening to him 5 years ago
What a damn shame this guy isn't the face of country music
I get the sense Sturgill's comfortable with the path he's on. That he welcomes success but isn't all-consumed by it.
WhiteRussianrock he posted on Instagram like... Last year about how he loves being able to walk down a crowded bourbon street without ha ING one person recognize him.

Aaron Croley this comment didn’t age well
He is, the media just doesn't know it.
Best song ever, best version ever. Best video on TH-cam. On the entire app, quite impressive.

Same here. It's like church but without the bullshit that church is.
Steve O'Dukk mine to. Completely walked me through some of the darkest days of my life.
Steve O'Dukk Man me too, know joke.
Takes a 50+ year old song , and puts a charge in it's ass . Incredible !!
I don't wright comments on TH-cam !!!but man !!this guy is the real deal thank you mr rogan !!
Stunning guitar tone and not to mention the guitar playing. Love the guitar sound and tone
Sturgill, Stapleton, colter, and Tyler Childers the re-founding fathers of country music
You forgot Jason Isbell.
@@Pancho308 And Arlo McKinley
Jason Isbell ain’t country. Whitey Morgan, Scott H Biram, Leroy Virgil Bowers, Janet Johnson.

So he played an acoustic and now he’s country? Lol. To each their own. I actually do like his music, he’s just not country, IMO at least

Hey Stugil as a Veteran from northeast Tennessee. I love your music all of it.
Love from Dublin, Ireland. Just found this lad recently and now I´m obsessed lol
First real talent i"ve seen since SRV. If you don't know those initials, then this conversation is over.
He needs to cut this track on a record asap !!! Been waiting for years now !!!! Come on Strug! Hook that shit up please !!!!

I agree. Waylon and Sturgill have way different voices and cadences. Both incredible. But definitely each their own.
mwnvols yep!
Sturgill is old school bluegrass and country with a little rock mixed in. He is the best so far that is new on the Sean. Like Chris Stapleton but Love Sturgill!
The best country singer of the 21st century, so far!
There was more country in the first 30 seconds of this than all the Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line albums put together....

Richard Skeets Yes! bring outlaw country/bluegrass back!!! Its people like him, Shooter Jennigs and Hank III that are making this a reality.
with the help of cody jinks whitey morgan and ward davis
No one has been this outstanding in a couple of generations & reverence is the only appropriate response.
Every cover he has ever done sounds like an original and that is kick ass! I would imagine Ralph Stanley would be proud!! Once in a generation musician/songwriter.
If you haven't listened to Sturgill Simpson ,,listen to him
He is great !!
KEXP has been solid for over 20 years...Just incredible how they've stayed so consistent.

He's playing the shit out of that guitar, and they barely show it! WTF??
that guitar is gorgeous best color
He is awesome! I think he sounds like Jennings, Hank, Haggard all rolled into one!!! I am hooked!
Thanks to you and all the others who are putting country back in country music.
What a badass. Pop country artists need to heed this man's words and take notes.
November 24, 2020 in the midst of the pandemic and Sturgill Simpson is a everyday must.

One of the best country singers ever played in my book! Thanks for keeping it country!
Sturgill is the man...this song is an eerie mix between Whitley and Waylon.
Tyler Crews I can somewhat agree and although I love Sturgill Simpson’s music I don’t ever compare anyone to Keith Whitley.
This is good country music. I wish I could start a label for real music. Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, and many more that we'll never here on mainstream radio

I love that hahah
That is fucking awesome!!!
Sturgill is his own genre
Hi dear how are you doing over there ?
God may Save the Qween, but it's real-deal guys like Sturgill that will save country music and Nashville. NO more cookie cutter stars, please!
As someone who generally can't stand CW music (and definitely that pop country garbage), I have to give this guy legit props. True talent and soul.
I'm addicted to this cover
That's the way to do it.top tunes.thanks from scotland.
This guy can sing anything, and he writes as well or better.
