Sturgill, you have taken me back to 1955, when my family took us kids to a Hillbilly park near St. Louis, where we saw Lefty Fizzell sing this song. It is a good memory.
It was Johnny Rion's Hillbilly park, at the Chain of Rocks bridge. You paid one fee to get into the park, then you could go from one of about 5 or 6 stages around the park to hear vaious artists perform. It was great!
Just got back from Nashville. All I heard on Broadway street was pop country (top 40s). I then went to the country music HOF and same sad story, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean stuff everywhere. Sturgill nowhere to be found or heard. What a crying shame. Thank God for Sturgill sticking to the roots of country music and giving us something we love to hear.
ryannnnnnnnn maybe they'll open their eyes when he snags album of the year with practically no radio play. Don't see ANY other "country" artist doing what he's doing.
They have sturgill and jamey johnson in the CMHOF now. I was just there last week. However, i find it ridiculous that they include florida georgia line and kane brown in the same room.
A country boy will survive!! Sturgill Simpson has no idea just how badass of a real country music musician he is and how many hours i have spent listening to and TRYIN to sing his music. An amazing individual to watch and listen to. I could only imagine hangin out with him. So PLEASE COME TO 181 Gilreath Way DAHLONEGA, GA 30533 and play all us country folk some real music!! I promise the folks around here would make u right at home!!
THANK GOD FOR KENTUCKY, they say all we got is bourbon, women, & basketball, they just hate ADMITTING IN NASHVILLE THAT WE GOT MUCH MUCH MORE!!!!!! God bless KENTUCKY!!!!!!!!!!
Alot of country music greats are from ky!! Keith whitley john Michael Montgomery and Montgomery gentry and bill monroe and dillion caramichel and Tyler childers and kevin skinner marty brown dwight yokam sturgill simpson and Chris stapleton Tyler booth Loretta lynch pasty Cline just a few #kyproud #easternkyboy
I don't know where you came from hoss. Not sure where you're goin. I do know you're a breathe of fresh air. You've restored my faith in the younger generation. Who gives a shit about how much mud is on your tires?
This is the sound I grew up with. I love the music, makes me feel young again. I enjoy all of Sturgill Simpson music he puts alot of effort towards any genre he does and he does a great job with great composure and I think his rendition of this song is top-notch
Probably listened to this fifty times since it was published. Still a heart punch. Love ya, Stu. Thanks for everything. Your future is brighter than your past. Even your recent glorious past. Pretty amazing. God bless you.
Far and away my favorite country singer. One day this guy popped up on my feed and I've been sold since. Been about two years now since I first heard him, and nothing has compared to his music.
Randy Elliott your right,, I read that article in a waiting room... Bout a year later I was asked for the first time if I know of jinks, Whitey and or sturgill or Isabel.. You mean the guys i bought multiples of records from to give em away trying to open ppls eyes.. The same music you hear anytime you get in my truck? Those guys!?! Na... Merle kicked those doors open and in strut sturgill, and he brought some pals along
Been told my hearing is almost perfect and will not apologize for saying this guy does absolutely nothing for me. Been listening to country before a lot of you were born.
Such an incredible artist!! I miss hearing more of his masterpieces! Stu, please come back?! Our world needs you and your outstanding musical talent back to save real country music!
Charles Willis i prefer the steel myself. and gene watsons version along with daryle singletarys. i hear all this talk about sturgill simpson and real country being in the same sentence. as a traditional country music fanatic. i just dont hear it. if u havent heard daryles and genes version. check it out. that to me is country music.
If this is not real country music I guess you are right, Sturgill makes Covers his own and does not perform the same old hum drum versions that's been done a hundred times. This is also a live performance with no studio tricks!
Beautiful song and better rendition. Thank you Sturgill. Please keeping making music. We need it to keep our world on it's Axis. Otherwise evil will prevail and we are toast!
Sturgill fuckin' kills it on this track ! This is the track that got me hooked on him. Absolutely fuckin' Killer !!! God Bless Sturgill & Country Music
So, I've listened to almost every version from Lefty Frizzell , Keith, Daryl, Merle, George, Willie, Gene Watson to the guys in the stairwell and I like this the best. Get after me! This is the performance that got me hooked on SS.
Modern country has reminded me of rap/hip-hop since about the late 80's. Over produced, superficial garbage with high school lyrics. As such, I've never liked any country (except for pickers) in decades. Sturgill and his band...man, the REAL DEAL. Even amongst the handful out there marketed as "real"...this guy is just galaxies beyond. He sounds and acts honest and believable when he "performs". The vibe and tones from the band are just as authentic and raw as dirt. This has to be some of the best country EVER produce! IMHO
Absolutely... Just when you think there's no way a better version of the song could be recorded here comes sturgill and the band with one hell of a rendition. Not taking anything from lefty and Whitley but damn. That chorus starts up and that feeling hell I could just get up and kick holes in the drywall and head to that's cunts house and cry in front of her new husband... Hahaha hell of a band!
I can't stand to see A good man go to waste One who never combs his hair Or shaves his face A man who leans on wine Over love that's told a lie Oh, it tears me up to see A grown man cry So I never go around mirrors I can't stand to see me Without you by my side No, I never go around mirrors Because I gotta heartache to hide I can't stand to be Where heartaches hang around It's so easy for the blues to get me down To see a grown man crawl Is more than I can stand And I look into the eyes of half a man So I don't go around mirrors I can't stand to see Me without you by my side No, I never go around mirrors Because I gotta heartache to hide And it tears me up to see A grown man cry Writer(s): SANGER SHAFER, LEFTY FRIZZELL
This man reminded me some years ago that I was a a musician we will always have the rainbow bistro in Ottawa Ontario Canada uncle sturg ol' lefty I'm sure is proud...bless up
For such a young guy, Miles Miller is a very experienced drummer. He knows how to move it along so that the rest of the band can do their jobs. Obviously this is Sturgill's band but these guys, Kevin Black on Bass and Laur 'Little Joe' Joamet on Fender Telecaster (more than just 'electric guitar) along with Miles, are truly a 'BAND'. They are the best unit to have played around Sturgill given that the mission is to represent 'The Songs'. Real Country music has a future.
That's what I love about Miles. He's so steady delivering the requisite country shuffle backbeats, and then I get a charge out of those brief moments he slides into full rock. With that and his perfect vocal harmony moments, this guy is a huge asset to the band.
In the first verse, the band/Sturgill flub the time signature around the chord change on the word "waste." It wasn't really the drummer's fault. The whole group was out of sync during the first verse. You can see they are trying to get it back, and they do during the chorus.
I just heard that the slide guitar player has parted ways with Sturgill. Time marches on but they made some fine music together. Thank god we can still hear them together on youtube.
Mil,gracias Simpson,y su agrupación,por entonar esta melodía,de esta forma tan preciosa y con esa sabor original de country MÚSIC y ustedes son jóvenes y sigan cantando con ese sabor
Great and original cover of this song! The mere blemish where Sturgill plays the wrong chord at the beginning for a split second only adds to the character of performance- love the facial expressions of the drummer and guitarist as this happens!

@victoredwards0530 Good times, WOW!
Kentucky's BEST. Now that's real country music.
Sturgell’s performances during these years was the best! He’s better than anybody.
I really hope he starts touring and making music again. It's just too good
Sturgill is a man with a deep, deep soul, whose not afraid to show it. Bless him and his talent which he willingly shares with us.
I would love to see him live at a bar somewhere in the middle of no where. What a beautiful man, what a voice, what a soul. 👌🏼
I was at the HOF in June and they had a huge display of Blake Shelton's clothes on display.
ryannnnnnnnn maybe they'll open their eyes when he snags album of the year with practically no radio play. Don't see ANY other "country" artist doing what he's doing.
They have sturgill and jamey johnson in the CMHOF now. I was just there last week. However, i find it ridiculous that they include florida georgia line and kane brown in the same room.
just like the hero's that he is following..... he bucks the country "protocol" i believe he says fuck em

The great ones do it best live. Sturgill is uncomparable. Saw him at the Legendary Horseshoe in T.O. best show of my life.
Everything he touches is gold. It’s very rare, this type of raw talent.
best country band ive heard in a long time, that guitar solo was unreal, and this is the way country music should sound .
I don't know where you came from hoss. Not sure where you're goin.
I do know you're a breathe of fresh air. You've restored my faith in the younger generation.
Who gives a shit about how much mud is on your tires?

Far and away my favorite country singer. One day this guy popped up on my feed and I've been sold since. Been about two years now since I first heard him, and nothing has compared to his music.
Thank You Merle Haggard for giving a shout out to Sturgill Simpson, in a recent interview ,when asked who he listens to these days.
Na... This version of "Mirrors" is great in my humble opinion. I watch this video every night before I go to sleep.
One in 100 billion, thank you for blessings us with this voice of Sturgill.
The lead guitar player killed it! I thought it was a steel guitar until the camera showed him with the Esquire and slide.
You're right iceman62509. Gene Watson's version is the best of all i've heard along with Daryle Singletary and Keith Whitley.
iceman62509 disagree 100%!
c8gofor1 you sir dont know traditional country music. aka real country music
If this is not real country music I guess you are right, Sturgill makes Covers his own and does not perform the same old hum drum versions that's been done a hundred times. This is also a live performance with no studio tricks!
Just saw Sturgill at The Fox in Detroit. Him, drummer, bass player, and keys, 1 mic. Incredible show.
This might be the 🐐 Country cover of all time. And I’m being completely serious.
Beautiful song and better rendition. Thank you Sturgill. Please keeping making music. We need it to keep our world on it's Axis. Otherwise evil will prevail and we are toast!
Another Fantastic Cover of a favorite Country song! I've been listening to this one for the past few months and love it more each day!

So, I've listened to almost every version from Lefty Frizzell , Keith, Daryl, Merle, George, Willie, Gene Watson to the guys in the stairwell and I like this the best. Get after me!
This is the performance that got me hooked on SS.
Nobody touches Lefty Frizzell on this one. But Keith Whitley & Sturgill are tied for 2nd
Apparently you don't like the words then because you can't understand a damn thing he's singing !
@@soundguy5813 I understand every word.

Such a smooth classic.. Thanks for keeping it smooth and amazing!

Heard him do this in Lexington and Louisville.
Lefty and Keith Whitley would approve
Mark Creech Great analogy. I loved KW
I really highly doubt it!!
Keith Whitley is who I was sure thinking of too
Daryl Singletary version is great too.
Boy, his voice might be too genuine and his songs a little too sincere...
He needs to sing more about outlaws and the way things used to be! 😤
Yes, particularly in comparison to what they used to hearin
All three of you have been purchased a cold beverage by me 😂
Yes Sir, Haggard, Jones and Willie all in one 😇
I see what ya did there😎
I can't stand to see
A good man go to waste
One who never combs his hair
Or shaves his face
A man who leans on wine
Over love that's told a lie
Oh, it tears me up to see
A grown man cry
So I never go around mirrors
I can't stand to see me
Without you by my side
No, I never go around mirrors
Because I gotta heartache to hide
I can't stand to be
Where heartaches hang around
It's so easy for the blues to get me down
To see a grown man crawl
Is more than I can stand
And I look into the eyes of half a man
So I don't go around mirrors
I can't stand to see
Me without you by my side
No, I never go around mirrors
Because I gotta heartache to hide
And it tears me up to see
A grown man cry

The tele player playing those pedal steel guitar licks....well done sir!

I’ve blown more than one set of speakers with this one.
Lefty, Merle, Keith, George and Daryle would be proud of this cover !!! Keep it real Sturgill!!!
Nashville can keep their country rap, pretty boy BS!
Whoa! Was NOT expecting THAT voice. Nice going, KEXP! Beautiful. ...and someone needs to keep an eye on that drummer, he's totally out of control lol
Of course that is your opinion.
Wow so good. Old time country sounds
Sturgill and Jamey Johnson the new Willie and Waylon.
Someone really does not like Johnson...
Andre I know post is old. But what did you mean? About not liking Johnson
God Bless Sturgill Simpson... and his music. ✌
This has a million views and i have never heard before.? Its damn good thou!!! This is country!
Very well done slide work on the solo, sounded like a lap steel.oh yeah, then sturgills voice was top of the line!
I just heard that the slide guitar player has parted ways with Sturgill. Time marches on but they made some fine music together. Thank god we can still hear them together on youtube.

He is the real deal not that pop BS they play today thanks for keeping real.
Ok this guy actually deserves a awesome title and drinks for the night 🍺
Great and original cover of this song! The mere blemish where Sturgill plays the wrong chord at the beginning for a split second only adds to the character of performance- love the facial expressions of the drummer and guitarist as this happens!
