Hey guys, I'm new to this whole country thing but I gotta have this song under my belt. anyone know the name of the style I need to learn to play like that? or is he just using a pick and alternate picking with did different patterns over the six strings? I've been learning it today and I get close but man, he hits every string dead on, no mistakes in his patterns. just damn.
+Taremlov Snej Day two, I'm getting pretty good. after practicing for a bit I can hit the strings I need to pretty consistently. But man, I need a new guitar. its tuff hitting that Asus4. played it on a cheaper guitar with less resistance on the strings and it was so easy and sounded great. Lol. But I have a long way to go. Im just pumped I can actually play it in any way close to how he does.
Lord knows how much I want to see this man in concert and pray for the opportunity to meet him and just tell him how grateful I am to him for his music. It's a gift in my opinion and has gotten me through some nights that without it I might not have made it through, thank you Sturgil for all the amazingly awesome songs you write and sing
Unfortunately for me, I only recently discovered this incredible musician. I don't know where he was hiding but I'm sure glad I found him. His voice is awesomely emotional.
I love that he uses this guitar on several performances and has presumably been playing it for a long time. You can see the wear from his ferocious pick attack BELOW the pickguard and above the sound hole. Just a great player

Haha, I thought my whole life that I genuinely disliked country music, now that I've heard REAL country music, it's kind of shocking how my opinion did a complete 180.
there are a ton of good underground country artists....i release mine at www.oldssleeper.bandcamp.com my 2012 album, New Years Poem, was voted as one of the albums of the year on www.savingcountrymusic.com and there are a ton of other artists getting coverage on there....country has soul.
I wondered about this guy when I recently discovered his work. Sound and fury, turtles and such. I think I also saw him on Joe Rogan, but hes a country musician? It didnt add up. This is the much needed country musician that wandered into psychadelia. Super talented and a great guitarist. This is good stuff.
He is the real deal- guy doesn’t seem to give a damn about how he is supposed to act as a country singer- because he is so talented he is defining it as he goes along. Just awesome!
Saw a guy with an acoustic guitar on a thumbnail in suggested videos and clicked on it. Never heard of this guy before then. 3 seconds in when he started, my jaw dropped. Phenomenal voice and guitar playing! Off to see what he's done up 'til now! Also loving this channel, discovering lots of artists I'd never heard of and I love the smaller, more intimate setting! Well his style of music has evolved quite a bit since this tiny desk concert. Interested to hear your thoughts on his other work though, sturg is one of my favorites and I love how each album is so unique compared to the last.
I love Sturgill so much because he worked a regular job until he was 35 years old, then decided to be a songwriter. You can see it when he sings & talks. He’s an all around good dude!
New Sturgill fan to the room here. On a whim, checked out the album A Sailor's Guide to Earth on the day of it's release ---was blown away. Plugged my headphones in at work one day and was captivated from the first song. Haven't been able to stop since. Just starting to make my way back into his previous works....music is a huge part of my life...and this my friends, is music that has made me the most excited in as far back as I can recall. Great voice, lyrics/storytelling, awesome guitar player, diversity....the whole deal. I haven't listened to much in the way of mainstream radio in a couple of years now.... mostly fluff.. that insults my intelligence (and ears!) . And if I should say so, he comes across as a very genuine and humble man....still kicking around in sneakers, doing his own thing... mischievous eyes and grin haha... i honestly think he is adorable. But all that boy crush stuff aside :P.... unbelievable talent :)

I am happy to have had the opportunity to explore many of the areas he refers to in Eastern KY, Sadly this area was decimated by flooding last year and I had to leave for higher ground like many others. There is beautiful melancholy as well as tragedy that hangs with the mist that rolls across those hills.
I have probably watched this Tiny Desk more than any of the others. This entire performance is a VIBE, and, lately, I've been living for it! I'll be adding Sturgill to my list of must see live shows.
when i first started listening to Sturgil about a year ago, i thought he sounded like Waylon..... the more i listened to him the more he sounds like Sturgil and nobody else.
I thought the same thing about a year ago and that is a big reason I started listening him ....And now I say you are 100 percent right ....he def sounds like Sturgil!!! Very good talent!
50 years into my life, much spent in a small Canadian City surrounded by farmland and I’ve just really started to dig country music. I haven’t completely missed it though; I love the Grateful Dead, enjoy Johnny Cash and Classic tunes from Hank, Waylon and Willie… but had zero interest in new country music. That’s when I heard Charley Crockett. Then Hank Shoulders and Sierra Ferrell. More recently, thankfully found Sturgill. And Billy Strings, Tyler Childish, Colter Wall and Chris Stapleton. Country is full of amazing old school stripped down storytelling again. Not pop music (though there are the Luke Bryans too.) now I can’t get enough. Love it.

It's been a long time since I sat down and listened to any music without any preconceptions. I was never one to listen to country music. Being in my sixties I thought my musical tastes had pretty much atrophied. I'm glad I sat down and listed to this! I will be seeking out more from this talented country singer!
if you truly love real country music you will know Mr Simpson is the best pure reminder of what a true country voice sounds like.. loved him from day one,and will continue to be a fan till time after all
Filming the music video for this song was one of the best weekend ever for me as a filmmaker. Sturgill Simpson is masterful on the lyrics here, they don't get old even after shooting the band playing the song over and over haha.

I just discovered this guy last night because one of his songs was on the show, the 100. I am not a country fan but I definitely dig this. I think the best collaboration that should happen is this guy and Dan Auerbach. I think the two of them together could make some pretty awesome music.
Been getting into Country after having visited the South in June. Crazy enough, on the way back to Florida from Pittsburgh I stayed the night in... Murfreesboro, TN. The amount of good, modern Country music is unreal! Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Charley Crockett, The Dead South... you name it!
Was lucky enough to score tickets to his show at TXR last week, and let me tell you the new songs are bad ass live. It was like this on steroids with a whole new sound.
The first tune he plays is probably my all time favorite tune about the reptile aliens made of light...It's a rare song that brings me to a teary eyed catharsis the first time I hear it. Cheers guy.
Saw Sturgill at the Harvest Jazz & Blues in NB, Canada this past Sept. I was like a kid in my twenties going to a concert. He blew the audience away. Real down to earth music. No bubble gum country here. I’ll fly to where ever to see him next year.
I discovered Sturgill like a month ago. I am now what could be considered a full fledged fan, but I keep coming back to this video. He puts his soul out there!

this is actually the best thing on youtube. i mean overall youtube, this is the best thing i’ve found.

That’s when I heard Charley Crockett. Then Hank Shoulders and Sierra Ferrell. More recently, thankfully found Sturgill. And Billy Strings, Tyler Childish, Colter Wall and Chris Stapleton. Country is full of amazing old school stripped down storytelling again. Not pop music (though there are the Luke Bryans too.) now I can’t get enough. Love it.

Saw him live last weekend. If you get the chance, absolutely go. Simpson is an extraordinarily talented musician.

It's been a long time since I sat down and listened to any music without any preconceptions. I was never one to listen to country music. Being in my sixties I thought my musical tastes had pretty much atrophied. I'm glad I sat down and listed to this! I will be seeking out more from this talented country singer!
if you truly love real country music you will know Mr Simpson is the best pure reminder of what a true country voice sounds like.. loved him from day one,and will continue to be a fan till time after all

Filming the music video for this song was one of the best weekend ever for me as a filmmaker. Sturgill Simpson is masterful on the lyrics here, they don't get old even after shooting the band playing the song over and over haha.

I am not a country fan but I definitely dig this. I think the best collaboration that should happen is this guy and Dan Auerbach. I think the two of them together could make some pretty awesome music.

Been getting into Country after having visited the South in June. Crazy enough, on the way back to Florida from Pittsburgh I stayed the night in... Murfreesboro, TN.

Was lucky enough to score tickets to his show at TXR last week, and let me tell you the new songs are bad ass live. It was like this on steroids with a whole new sound.

Saw Sturgill at the Harvest Jazz & Blues in NB, Canada this past Sept. I was like a kid in my twenties going to a concert. He blew the audience away. Real down to earth music. No bubble gum country here. I’ll fly to where ever to see him next year.
