This is such a great reminder, thank you so much! I think it's also important to recognize that the ego, is essence, is not ACTUALLY your enemy - it's a part of you, and when we spend time trying to kill it...it often fights back. Instead, befriending the enemy and telling it to sit in the back and not touch anything, while you take the wheel, has been so helpful in my own journey. I loved this video and all your videos, thank you again!

Fantastic video. I've read a lot about the ego, but the way you articulated it in this video was fantastic and very helpful. It's very noticeable when my ego gets in the way, and how debilitating it can be to personal growth and overall development. To improve, we have to go down those unflattering paths. Fall, fail, embarrass ourselves. Stuff our ego is constantly trying to avoid. Eckhart Tolle does a great job discussing this in "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth: Awakening your life's purpose" discussing how identifying with the ego leads to a false sense of self, and constantly leads us down roads that never lead to fulfillment. I really trust this channel and immediately bought that book by Ryan Holiday and can't wait to read it and put it into practice. Thanks a lot for this video!

You know, sometimes u just hv to go through it, but what I can advice u to do and what has helped me is the foundation: eat right, sleep well and exercise. Do this for a month and see how it affects ur mood and focus. After that u can meditate and observe ur thoughts and see how strong ur ego is that wants everything to be perfect. The fact that ur overthinking is because ur mostly in the future or in the past with ur thoughts, but not in the present. U saying stuff like “what if this and that” “should I do this or that” imagining worst case scenarios and thinking that u might regret things. I hv been overthinker for a long time. I’m now 26. It comes a point where u hv done it so often that u say enough is enough. But u see, I hv watched A LOT of videos on this topic. Also, I’ve read books and read articles as well, but I still did it. Ok, maybe at the beginning I didn’t because u feel motivated, but eventually u might fall back into that trap again. Maybe it’s a trigger or ur motivation just didn’t hold up. Trust me when I say to prioritize on the foundation first. Do this so ur meditation becomes effektive. Then u will see that ur ego is at play here.
I hope this was helpful and I could give u another perspective on it. 🙏❤️

This is such an important video. The cultural disdain for being average is so toxic. I'm really glad that I majored history in college, if anything it's given me a very keen, sharp awareness of how much we all are just dust in the wind... even the greats in history to an extent, unremarkability is a good outcome in this existence. Find joy and comfort in things that are not all guts and glory and you'll find it's a lot easier to not only love yourself but love others as well.

If you focus on being great at a few things, you increase your chances at success.

This video nails it. 5 years ago I wanted to be a studio animator. But instead of trying to become big and famous. I went back to school and would work on my personal projects in the evening. When I graduated my portfolio was exactly where I wanted it to be. Landed my first studio jobs 6 months later (and during a pandemic). Sometimes you just gotta be so good that your work will speak for you.

Many people think ego is all about feeling superior and that when you have low self-esteem that your ego isn't that big, but that's just not true (examples below).
Ego goes both ways. It's not only about feeling superior, but also about feeling inferior.
The bigger your ego, the more superior/inferior you feel.
It's like a spectrum. And real confidence happens outside of that spectrum.
The opposite of ego is confidence. People who have a strong sense of feeling superior/inferior compare themselves to others and are sensitive to how other people see them.
People who lack ego or have a small, "healthy" one just live life without putting too much emphasis on the opinion of others. They just "are" and they just "do."
    Examples of ego:
    - "Hell yeah I'm such a good chef, I can definitely cook this cake better than others. I hope everyone sees what a good chef I am. I'm going to get a lot of compliments and feel so good about myself."
    - "Damn I suck at cooking, oh my god I'm so useless, I can't do anything. Hopefully nobody comes in and sees me cooking, they will probably all laugh at me and think that I'm dumb..."
Examples of confidence (lack of ego):
    - "I have to cook for my date tonight. Alright, I've never cooked this particular dish before, but I'll try. I have some experience in cooking and feel competent enough for the challenge, so let's see. I'm just going to cook without worrying too much about whether it will work out or not. I'm just going to do it."
    - "I'm hanging out with my friends and they ask me if I can put on some music. Although my friends are into hip-hop I am kind of in the mood for some jazz. I put on a piece of music without really worrying much about how they'll react. I just do it because I think it sounds great. I don't really feel any anxiety although I'm putting on "risky" music, I don't really care much about being judged for it (risky in the sense that there may be a chance that people will have a negative opinion.)
That's at least how I understand it. I'm open to comments.

Yes, this is a subject not many youtubers have spoked of and you are absolutely right.
We all tend to be egoistic time to time. It's good to stop, see you as a one individual among others and not think you are a special person in any way, there is always someone better and you can always learn something new to become better. Just work on things you love and let the results astonish others. Good things will then happen. Be humble.

I really appreciate the message about writing up your resume. I quit my job of 11 years in March because I felt like I was declining so much, I was making a fool of myself. There was so much frustration of "I can do better than this" (among other issues) i couldn't get myself on track and left. Since then I've been so anxious about finding something else, feeling like I'll be inadequate. So many sources tell you to use that "fluffy language" in your resume to stand out, that a simple resume stating your skills is no longer "in". You have to sell yourself by advertising why you're better than the others rather than just showing that you're the right person for the job because you have the skills.
I have to stop over thinking it.
    Thank you 💜

What you're describing is actually a person with low self-esteem trying to hide it with "fake self-confidence", someone who gets defensive as soon as they see their ego being threatened because it is very fragile. Someone with decent self-esteem would not mind because they wouldn't even feel the need to compare themselves or brag or be the best etc.

This really makes it's way into relationships too. Sometimes our obsession with who we are superceeds what we can actually do for other people and the love we could give. Our focus on identity often is the death of closeness and real fulfillment because we can't see past our own image of who we think we are and how other people must align with this image.

dealing with my ego has been tricky. it actually contributed to my LOW self worth. i had such high expectations for my capabilities that whenever i fell short i got pissed at myself, thinking how could i possibly fail at this thing i’m so good at?? now that i’ve realized this, i’m actually becoming more confident, because i have a more accurate measure of what i can actually do, and when i screw up i look to improve next time, rather than it completely crushing me. i also have less issues with jealousy. when i see someone who is better than me i try to emulate them/take tips from them rather than have it be a reflection upon my ego and abilities. great video. thanks for covering this.

  • @Arielelian

As an employer with 20 years of HR/Management experience, this is true. Ego is my #1 red flag that puts the brakes on any hiring efforts. Someone with an over inflated ego is unteachable, untrainable, doesn't work well in teams, and doesn't deal with accountability well. Even if they're competent, but have an ego, I pass...because it'll just be a matter of time (often short) before they start thinking they're better than the job they were hired for and start looking elsewhere.
Having been a mentor to a number of people, people with overinflated egos often live in denial, which means they tend to lack self-introspection, often project their flaws on to others, and ultimately can become angry / violent / unstable if they have to actually face their reality. Popping that ego bubble isn't a pretty sight, but it's something that needs to be done.
It should be noted that ego doesn't always translate to "arrogance". Someone can have a negative ego, in that they feel their "suffering, flaws, pain, etc." is so much worse than everyone else's, thus they deserve special treatment.
