  • Quite a mixed bag of results here. This was a year before the mobile phone law change, in March 2021, so we still had to prove interactive communication. I'm not quite sure how the Met decided that there was no evidence of interactive communication with LB65HZH - the guy was holding the phone with a visible call screen. Got out of work a half hour early on this day, so trawled the Hyde Park chum line for some catches.

This junction used to have two lanes of traffic heading northbound along West Carriage Drive, up to the traffic lights near Lancaster Gate. A few years ago they reduced it to just one lane northbound. This has led to long queues of stationery cars pumping pollution into the parks, as well as bored motorists in the queues using their phone screens. It's almost as if this 'highway improvement' were designed to catch motorists out, and cause them to lose their licence.

@@zitzong I don’t see how it would be harder to prosecute them because if the video evidence clearly shows the offence had been committed (regardless whether they admit to it at the time or not). People can’t admit their guilt at the time of speeding past a speed camera but the camera evidence confirms the offence was committed (just as Mikey’s camera evidence shows whether an offence has been committed or not). From what I’ve seen of Mikey’s videos, few of the offenders have openly admitted to him that they are guilty of the offence (plus they obviously aren’t under caution).

    • @damionlee7658

The technology has existed for decades, but it is an offence to use equipment to interfere/jam the signal of a mobile phone or radio (Section 68 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006).
Trying to write an exception for use in vehicles opens the door to potential issues with vehicles becoming mobile signal jammers, interfering with mobiles in use outside the vehicle, and as you mentioned, causing passengers not to be able to use their devices (and of course the driver when correctly parked).
There was a paint developed back in the late 90s (maybe earlier, I can't remember exactly, is been a couple of decades since I've thought about the stuff) as I recall, which surpressed phone signals. The purpose proposed was to allow cinemas to paint each screening room, preventing calls and texts. The paint didn't breach the laws, as it was simply that signals could not penetrate it, rather than interfering with the signal. At the time, it was proposed by some people to use it in cars to stop the driving on the phone problem that was getting out of hand back then.
I believe ultimately it was decided that removing the ability to use a mobile phone in a vehicle completely was both a safety issue, and an overstep of powers. Ultimately, people with driving licences are adults, and they "Should" be capable of acting like adults. Unfortunately, that is a massive overestimation of many people (as we see time and again in Mikey's videos).

It's just as maddening to me that these people don't realise the risks they pose to others - they really do think what they're doing is fine, and simply 'against the rules'. That one needed more than 6 points.

The number of drivers using mobiles in moving cars, vans and lorries is increasing where I live. Especially on the local M27 and its feed routes to the coast. Worst of all are the number who hold there mobiles down by their knees, forcing them to take their eyes off the road ahead. Equally worrying is the growing number of food delivery cycles, scooter and moped riders who drive along holding a mobile in front of their eyes while using a map and direction app.
