I agree that this kind of false colors is misleading. I choose the new OSEE Lilmon 5 monitor which has the same false color system as smallHD monitors (also less than 200 €/$!). Highly recommended!

    Great video, as always!
I’ve always struggled with the “stock” false color ranges. After years of frustration, I bought a SmallHD 702 touch, which allows you to customize the false color ranges and colors.
Since then, I’ve eliminated the greys that are normally scattered around, and instead go from a dark brown (log IRE of 28) to a progressively lighter pink (log IRE of 55) with 18% middle-grey as the classic ‘green’ still in between 39-40 IRE.
This allows me to see the entire gradient of skin tones, represented in false color, by ratios.
Now, it’s just a matter of determining my contrast ratio. For example, brown to pink is a 16:1 ratio, and dark brown to light pink is 32:1 (super moody).
This has been a game changer for my workflow.

This is such a great video. I love your stuff man. I've been more cognizant of having some kind of specular highlight in the background because I tend to keep my backgrounds so dark that they lack contrast as well. It works in extremely moody stuff but for the general situation a variety of exposure levels is key.

Oh man this so helpful. Ive been trying to nail exposure using middle grey but I kept thinking, the image looks bland in away, even though it was properly exposed. I kept thinking I had to change the lighting on me, but it makes sense to create contrast in the background. Can’t wait to try this. Also appreciate the “just get it in the pink” tip too. Loving my C70.

I like this but I reckon you could go a little hotter on your subjects skin tones, especially with a farside key. For eg the lady with the purple jumper, that's a nice shot esp with the sun slash on the background, but she looks a bit flat. You're shooting darkside which is real nice, if the left side of her face/cheek was a little brighter, creating a bit of a silhouette she'd get a lot more separation and it would balance better with how hot the other parts of your frame are, while also giving you more contrast. A slash across her hands could also work if you had the time and a spotlight mount. Additionally, having a backlight really does help, especially with dark clothes, even if it's subtle.

You are excellent at explaining exposure, and over the years I've found info on nailing your exposure (especially in LOG) very hard to come by. Coming here bc I am inconsistent with my exposure on my C300MII and well I want a C70, even more knowing there's great resources like this on TH-cam!

Thanks for this man, I learned a lot. Question, I shoot a lot in natural light scenarios, and I like what you said about changing the angle or location slightly to control light more, but I'm wondering if you have scenarios where you purposefully expose to preserve highlights and consequentially underexpose skin tones, or what you do to avoid that especially at mid day. Thanks!

I’m on a zcam S6 and have always struggled with nice face lighting as the log and 709 image profiles on my cam are very contrasty. I was using Godoy slw60 and thought perhaps it was that light causing very dark shadow side so I upgraded to 300dmk2 aputure with the light dome2 - Still however getting the same issue. Do you know of any tests I can do to figure out if there’s something wrong with my camera or the way I’m exposing?
