  • I got my hands on an EM1 mkII for a few days last week, and as a Panasonic GH5 owner, I was really curious as to how they stacked up against one another.
    The results surprised me, to say the least!
    So here is my review of the EM1 MkII, covering all my favourite features, and some of my less favourite features.

    There was a bit of trepidation when I saw the title of this video, mainly, because I have just become an owner of the EM1-mkll. I have never had a GH 5 in my hands so I can't really comment on them but, as a confirmed Olympus "fan-boy" I'm glad your "quick review" was objective, well done. I'm still getting to grips with the my new toy but the menus are not all that bad once you get to know the system. Good vid :-)

    Great video, as always. Although I 'only' own G80 and GX80, rather than GH5, I'm not completely convinced by the dual stabilisation, and I get better handheld stability using my Olympus lenses on the Lumix bodies, especially on the G80. Whichever manufacturer's body you might use, in a real world situation, I doubt you would be attempting images with shutter speeds much slower than 1/2 second without stabilising the camera somehow - even if it's only holding it against a tree or a lamp post etc. What I CAN say in the G80's favour is that I can regularly hand hold exposures of 1/15 second at 150mm on my Olympus 40-150, which is bloody amazing in my book, especially as I'm no longer as young as I used to be!

    Great video, I have the em1 mkii after owning the em5 mkii for a year, I jumped ship from Fuji for the live comp and live time alone.
    But I 100% agree on the menus I still struggle with mine,

    Very nice comparison. About the Oly menus, if you are seriously using the camera and adjusting settings on a regular basis, the menus aren't an issue because you learn them. I've never used a Pen, but I imagine the EM1 has much greater depth to the menus. Also, the NR for long exposures is simply the camera taking a shot with a closed shutter and removing any noise that appears based on that shot, so I'm not sure why you would turn if off for most situations

    After having owned an epl5 I can agree that the Olympus menus are the only achiles heel on the Olympus micro 4/3rds cameras. I had hoped that four years later Olympus would have had a go at tweaking the system but... well, there it is :)
    I'm a Lumix user but i will be buying an Olympus body in the next year or so to compliment my new G9, ideally the em5 mk2 (or 3 which hopefully will be out by then) or even the 10mk3. I understand they, too, have the live composite mode.

    Great video. It seems the worse the conditions get, the better the Olympus IBIS out performs its competitors. I am waiting for the EM5 MkIII. It should have 4K, 120fps in HD, and several other video options lacking in the current EM5. I feel the EM1 is a great camera but I really have a hard time justifying its premium price. Menu issues are easily overcome over time and familiarity.

    Fantastic comparison! Your Pen-F has live composite too, in fact, most Olympus cameras do. You could have compared your Pen-F against the GH5. I bet the IBIS will be close. BTW, love your Star Trek Discovery calendar.

    switched first from full-frame Canon 1D DSLR (I have a significant "L" lense 11+ collection) to mirrorless with the Sony a6300 for a travel and street. Great camera (Hybrid)...this holiday season I jumped on the M43 bandwagon with the OMD em1mkii...I tried so hard to find a reason to return it... but, just like you, it's "freaky" to be able to walk around without a tripod. I've actually hand held a 6-second exposure! So it's staying, and it's my goto system now. Great video btw. #mirrorlessphoto

    The EM1 MKii with the stabilised 12-100 F4 is outrageous. Propped up against a wall 20 seconds is possible, at least for the non coffee drinkers! You are right live composite is brilliant, you see what you get, in RAW!

  • @nickwilson5437
    @nickwilson5437 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dont forget Oly Em1 Mk2 also has 2 layers of stabilization... =] I handheld shot the new blood moon 2.5 seconds and was BLOWN AWAY with it. The internal stabilization is NUTS on the Oly OMD EM1 MK2, NUTS... simply put. I researched a bunch on between these 2 cameras after selling my Sony A99ii kit and settled on the Oly kit and have been sooo happy with it!

    Well, Olympus is some years ahead with IBIS. So no surprise - but good that you just tested it! And the EM1 mkII has a larger battery than all previous models. I had it for testing last year, and it is just a great camera - but I have an inkling that the G9 would be on an even keel with it (for less money) …

    • @MicroFourNerds

      Sorry, a little late to the party but I do have the G9. The IBIS is great. I remember recently climbing a large hill and out of breath, my arms were significantly shaking. Took some shots and they came out tack sharp with no motion/shake blur. I was impressed. But I do think the Olympus EMI Mk II (what's with all these camera namings?) would have done well too. I think M4/3s cameras have the market on this to mitigate the sensor's lack of low light ability.

  • @alexwade9921
    @alexwade9921 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting result, and not what I would have expected either. I’m not sure if it would have been the same had you done something a bit more brutal like testing at the long end of your longest focal dual IS lens (I think you have at least a 35-100). As you go longer, IBIS becomes less and less effective compared to lens IS. My understanding of how dual IS works is that the lens operates on the basic x and y axis (all it could ever do) and the sensor does the three rotational axes. The most important of those for stills is the rotation along the longitudinal axis (perpendicular to the sensor plane) since it’s very hard not to impart a little rotation when pressing and releasing the shutter release.
    It’s so rubbish and frustrating that you can’t have dual IS with mixed manufacture of lens and camera. I don’t believe it can’t be done. Despite the crappy menus I’m an Olympus devotee for the stills quality. I think they really trounce the Panasonic on the jpegs straight out of the camera. I always shoot jpeg fine + RAW but only really consider a shot successful from a skill point of view if the Jpeg looks great straight out of the camera. All my zooms are Panasonic though. I have a PanaLeica 8-18, 12-35 and 35-100 2.8 and 100-300 mki. I think they are mostly smaller and better than the Olympus ones.

    So when are you joining the -winning- Olympus team? :) I've become somewhat of an Olympus fan (I just like the feel of them!) but in all honesty I haven't used a GH5 to compare, so thanks for your thoughts. I also find their IBIS crazy amazing! By the way was that the 12-50 kit lens? What did you think of it? I find it really good for a KIT lens. Keep up the good work!

      Tomas Hernandez haha the joy of micro four thirds is I guess you don't have to pick sides 😂 I loved the Olympus kit lens, it's amazing quality. As always with Olympus, as well as the sharpness, the build quality blew me away too.

    Hi, Could you give me your thoughts of the GH5 in low light video say of a band in a pub for example?

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oxharp hi! Yes, I think the Gh5 is really capable in low light - especially when it comes to video. You'd get even better results with a fast lens, like a 1.8 prime lens for instance, but I've got some lovely footage with my g7 and Gh5 in gig and event environments with my 2.8 stock lenses 📸

    • @oxharp
      @oxharp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, If you have a look at my YT Channel - Oxharp and look at a video. I want to buy the GH5 to do the same type of thing. Do you think I could achieve better results say in 4K than what I am getiing through my video Camera which only does 1080p. I was thinking of getting two 2.8's 35 -70 and 70 - 200. or should I stick with what I have and save some money? Thanks for taking the time.

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oxharp the best thing about 4k, in my opinion, is that if you film in 4k but edit in 1080p, you can zoom in 4x without losing any quality. So if you filmed in 4k with a 2.8 stock lens, you might be able to save money on the zoom lens, and zoom in digitally, if you get what I mean? You could get all different sorts of angles, and even panning, by digitally zooming in on 4k footage. I think the Gh5 would be ideal for that sort of environment. A g85 would do great too, as you would still have the stabilisation, and you probably wouldn't need the extra slow motion settings you get with the Gh5

    I've got an EM5 mkII and a GX80 and did a little test to turn off the NR as you did. Went straight to it on the Oly, cogs, exp/iso, noise reduction, and you're there. on the Pana I had to search through the Rec settings and finally found it on screen 6... I have no trouble with the Oly menu system and thought the highly praised Pana system would be child's play, wrong! So for me, I'm the exact opposite of you, I like the way Oly break down the options, yes there are a lot of them but I find the grouping simplifies it compared to the Pana system. I find the stabilisation on both to be excellent and am particularly impressed with the GX80 and Pana 30mm macro dual stab, I can get some insanely long exposures handheld.
