    I own both, multiples in fact. I like the G9 more than the M1 Mk2 and Mk3. I love how the Olympus ones look, and the slightly smaller form factor does make a difference over the course of a long wedding day. But the G9 wins for me because of body detect, and its ease of use switching from something like face detect to manually moving the focus box around; the Mark 2 forces you to press a button and move a dial, the mark 3 forces you to press a button....whereas with the G9 if you bring it up to your eye and the face detect locks on to the wrong face, you just move the joystick and it automatically overrides the face/body/subject detect.
    And the viewfinder on the G9 is substantially better too.

    I too am a big fan of M4/3 second hand. Having recently purchased a GX9 for US$355 with only 113 shutter count (w/12-32 kits lens, OEM grip, & battery) and the G81 for US$465 with only 4000 shutter count (w/12-60 kit lens, OEM battery/kit extension, and 2x batteries), I am very impressed with the capabilities of these two units at such bargain prices. I do a lot of hand held photos and occasionally video, mixing it up between modern AF and manual vintage lenses. Both are in mint condition and fit the bill perfectly for my use.

    Fantastic comparison! This is what attracted me to your channel, it's not about obsessing over specifications or technology, but down to earth user focused reviews and comment. And your ethos that what is important is what meets your needs and what works for you is (in my view) entirely valid and matches my own view. It's not about what is best (in any case a somewhat problematic concept - best in what way?) but what is right for a user. And I agree on the importance of a camera just feeling right. The importance of how a camera feels and whether we enjoy using it can't be overstated, but is lost in many reviews which focus on pixel count, sensor minutiae, esoteric features etc. The reason I love the M1X is how it feels, it is a perfect fit for my hands, I love the vertical grip and there is a feeling of solidity which is rare in modern cameras. Some may say 'so what? Does that matter for the pictures?', I'd say yes it does because put aside technical performance - a camera you love and which is a joy to use is likely to get more use and encourage you to use it and to push it to find out what you can do with it. Quite aside from the fact that something which is nice to use is, well, just nicer to use. Both the E-M1 ii and G9 are superb cameras. I view the Olympus - Lumix thing as like Apple - Windows, or Android - IPhone. They're different, and people used to one will feel much more comfortable sticking with it and find the other a bit awkward and strange. However, you soon get used to the differences and after an initial learning phase soon feel right at home with the other. A lot of reviews really dwell on menus, how light the shutter release is etc and make a big play of how terrible they might be, ignoring the fact that if most users give it a week or so they'll adjust and find it fine.

    I had a G9 until about a year back and I must admit, I now wish I had kept hold of it. I went full frame with an old Sony A7 for better quality portrait shots with an 85mm on a full frame, but the G9 was an enjoyable camera for the long end stuff with a 70-300mm strapped on to it

    Nice to find a down to earth non hyped review.
    I left M43 selling my G9, 8-16,12-60,50-200,100-400 Almost 3 years ago, thinking the grass was greener on the other side. (Fuji X-H1, D810, Z6), but now I'm wanting to return to the fold and have missed the G9, ergonomics, lenses and the fact it was with me a lot more of the time when I was out (landscapes/walking/wildlife).
    I am considering the OM1 MK2/3, just as it has another body to upgrade to in the future, steady stream of new lenses. It kind of makes more sense on a practical level. Except poor EVF, smaller body and the Olympus menu system... I could probably put up with these things and enjoy photography still. What draws me to the G9 is the EVF, ergonomics (fits like a glove - as they say), the menu/interface/touch controls / button layout and the lenses seem better to me in terms of focal ranges. Eg olympus s 16-300mm FF equiv in 3 pro lenses, Lumix is 16-400 in 3 lenses, with some nice overlap.
    It would make the decision making much easier if Panasonic announced an G9 MK2 with the GH6 sensor...something to upgrade to in a few years!
    So that's my quandary

    How time flies! I’ve had the E-M1 MkII for over two years now and I’ve just ordered a used Lumix G9 to replace my old G6 and G7 cameras. For small/light cameras I have a GX80 and E-M10MkII but must say I will miss the G6 especially as it was my first M4/3 camera bought ten years ago. Will probably get it all finalised by the end of next week

    An excellent comparison Brian, however I tried the G9 in a camera shop (I was upgrading my GX7 because it got damaged). I found it very bulky for mf3's and quite expensive, at the time.
    So I went for the GX9, I already have Nikon DSLRS. I love it and with IBIS the quality hand heald is excellent - I don't do Video which it's not recommended for 📷👍

    There is a wide eye-cup for Olympus, it may only be available from Japan. I have one on my E-M5ii.
    The G9 allows me to put +/-EV on the Command Dial, the wheel on the back. So when shooting in Manual mode with Auto-ISO, I can fiddle the +/-EV as I like. I've not found another MFT camera that can do this. Neither GH4 nor E-M5ii can do this.
    On Lumix we have for a long time been able to assign Metering Mode to a Fn button. On Olympus we have to go through the Menu, quickest from the SCP screen.
    The Lumix Dual-IS needs a mention. Olympus has Synch-IS but it doesn't work on Lumix OIS lenses. For wildlife using the Leica 100-400 the Dual2 stabilises the monster lens so well during framing it can instantly grab an AF-Lock hand-held. The Body-IS on the E-M5ii is really only good for hand held framing up to a lighter weight 200mm lens after which is struggles a bit. The no-OIS Olympus 45mm is a telephoto and enjoys some Body-IS which e.g. GH4 cannot provide.
    The E-M5ii is tiny compared to the G9 and GH4 but has great haptics. It will take a SDXC-II card. Regarding cards, big is good but faster is better. There is a warning in very small print in the manual that the sensor can overheat when shooting long video; it tinges magenta. I had to get a G7 as B-cam to the GH4 because the E-M5ii could not do that job. I can't really recommend the G7 other than it shoots good video (I shoot 1080p too). I've been using MFT for a long time. I'll choose the camera for expected purpose, I don't always want to lug a big brick about; the pocket size E-PL7 with PZ14-45 is even smaller than wife's GX7. There is no 'best' camera, they all have different jobs. I still use my cuddly G5, I traded the E-PL2 long ago.
    Regarding the G5, reviewing the photo will appear blurred, low pixel count on EVF and LCD, but on computer screen perfectly sharp. Until the pixel count approaches that of a screen it will appear a trifle fuzzy; wifi can throw the pics onto a fondle slab for review.

    I have a G9, and a OMD-5 MKIII, which has similar attributes to the OMD 1 MKII. The OM5 is very light, and a much less professional feeling camera. For me, the main difference is the lack of phase detect autofocus. While I agree with all your observations when I'm shooting with my Panasonic Leica 100-400, I get way more keepers when shooting birds with the Olympus. I also believe IBIS is a little better in the Olympus bodies, but the G9 is excellent, especially compared to my Sony A7II and A7c. (Of course, Sony autofocus blows away Panasonic or Olympus)

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've set the lever to change from single to continuous autofocus and on both brands I use the touchscreen to move the focus point if necessary. I use that rather than the joystick even on the Sony A7 III.
    These two have different features which are complementary. If wanting to do Panoramic auto-stitching, for instance, and even focus stacking, the Lumix does it better. I choose both rather than one or the other and as much as possible I set the buttons in similar positions to do similar jobs, and that includes the Sony as much as I can. Dials in the same direction doing the same things as well. Autofocus pattern selection on all cameras set to left hand pad button.
    While the Sony continuous autofocus and tracking is amazing and much better than the two M4/3 brands offer, I prefer to handle and use the two M4/3 brands for some reason and both offer far better IBIS than the full frame Sony. The Sony is better, much better than the already excellent other two, which are much improved compared to older models, in low light high ISO shooting.
    I've only had the E-M1 Mk2 for a couple of months and after setting up to my liking, which took a week or more off and on, it is a firm favourite. While I did sell my Sony A57 and lenses after getting the new one, the primary motivation was to make even better use of my M4/3 lenses on a 'professional' grade camera which has come down in price to under £700

    Nicely done Brian; I own the G9 and have an Olympus EM10 Mark III. I love both cameras and find Micro 4/3 cameras fit my photography needs very well. I travel a lot and prefer a smaller camera over a larger camera. I used to own a Canon 6D and loved that camera for the photos it produced but lugging it around with its greater overall size and weight made me switch to the Micro 4/3 cameras. Thanks for avoiding a comparison of the specs which as you said doesn't tell you much of how the camera feels in your hands or whether it satisfies a photographers needs.

    Hi Brian
    Having owned both these cameras, I can agree with everything you say. I've now "moved on" to full frame and I sometimes wonder why. I still would buy an OMD but somewhat disappointed in the EM-1 mk III specs above the mk II for a £700 difference. The G9 was excellent but I always sightly preferred the EM-1 Mk II for most of the reasons you state. In-camera stacked focus was a particular favourite of mine although the G9 also did this to some extent. Keeping an eye on what OMD Solutions may come up with.

      @@joeltunnah A very valid comment. This is one of the reasons that I consider the specs of the EM-1 mk III so underwhelming compared to the EM-1 mk II when you factor in the cost difference. However, I will continue to watch for what OM Systems may come up with in the future. Rumours abound.

    I have the same cameras having been an Olympus user for over a decade. Like you I have the EM1 mk i and mk ii and recently added the Lumix G9. I agree with your comments about the key differences as .the G9 excels with the large EVF and and high 3.9MP res, faster handling, better menus, higher video frame rates and rear joy stick control. G9 is larger camera and I often find I still grab the Olympus as the preferred camera as it is smaller and this was the original rationale for M43. Both great cameras with excellent range of lenses. Long live M43.

    • @adam_mawz_maas
      @adam_mawz_maas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The challenge with remapping is you lose the lever to switch between AF modes. On my E-M1.2 I trusted the Eco mode to avoid the badly located on/off switch while using the 2x2 switch to switch between AF-S and AF-C setups and set AF-S mode to AF-S+MF to deal with manual focus for non-clutch lenses.
      I generally find the G9’s control layout is better, but the E-M1.2’s performance is better. As a landscape guy the G9 comes out ahead by a small amount because the AF advantages of the E-M1.2 don’t matter to me that much (I’d take the E-M1.3 though over either older body because of LiveND mode which can save me from hauling as many ND filters)

Also it has tons of character , built like a tank and perfect balance between compact yet great in the hands.... Also these will become true collectors items as I dont have a good feeling about the future of OM systems. Lumix is good value but they lose so much in the used market. Hi, recently got a used omd mk2, previously have the lumix G7. Got the olympus cos of its 20MB, using same lumix lenses, the G7 is a much lighter camera, and certainly less confusing a menu. I am seriously considering getting my first micro four thirds camera, the Olmpus OM-D EM1 - either the first version or the Mark 2 version. But before I commit I need to know that I will be able to get the lens that I need within my budget. What true wide angle, true macro lens do you recommend for $400 or less? I need somewhere between 10mm and 20mm and it needs to be capable of true 1:1 magnification, without the need for extension tubes or any other gimmicks - just an honest, native 1:1 macro.

      @ThatMicro43Guy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just seen this after reading your comment on another post Tom. To be honest I’m not aware of any 1:1 lenses in the 10-20mm category for M43. The widest one I’m aware of is the 30mm lumix. The problem with very wide macro lenses is you would almost need to be touching the subject to achieve the 1:1 magnification. I find the 30mm too close for my liking and the 60mm Olympus was ok for me.
      What are you intending photographing?

      The autofocus took a major step up with v2.4 on the G9 but I still think that the Olympus has it with its latest updates. In fairness though they are both fast and accurate but the Olympus, in my use, seems to have a better “keeper” rate and less likely to ‘hunt’ on poor contrast images, especially with long lenses. Again though, neither are bad in my opinion although many of the commenters disagree.

    You did seem to give the "win" in each category more to the G9 but then said the E-M1 was your preferred camera. I think you probably feel more "at home" with the E-M1 so your evaluation does help me and I am genuinely looking to buy one of these in the next month or so. I know you share lenses between both cameras but is the stabilisation better if you keep the lens matched with the body? I do tend to shoot at the longer distances so stabilisation is important to me (maybe it is not to you?). Thanks for the video Brian, very useful. Now about tripods for travelling...

    • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the “points” win does seem to go with the G9 but I think this is the value of a real use rather than specification lead review, the individual human element, which is why I advise to go and try each one. In truth the cameras are so close to each other and both more than capable of any photo assignment.
      I think that if you predominantly use long lenses that I would stick with the same bran of body and lens. I use the lumix 100-300 which has in lens stability and if used on the G9 or GX8 adds to the overall ibis. It is less stable when used with the Olympus. But I’m also an old school photographer who tries to brace against things when shooting for stability so rarely rely purely on the ibis alone. That said, I now rarely (never) use a tripod for stills unless in bulb mode. So my advice for a travel tripod is wasted as I don’t use one. Sorry

    Misplaced my G9 and was going to a workshop I wanted to use this body. Found a used EMD1 Mii for $400 with the charger and an additional battery. Very good price. Then I found the G9 in time for the workshop. Now I have the G9 and EMD1 Mii. These two bodies are more similar than different. Does anybody need both bodies?
    I am setting up the Olympus and will use it for a while. My intention is to sell one of the bodies as their functionality overlaps so much. The good news is there is no hurry to make a decision. I have both Olympus and Panasonic lenses. I gave an EMD5 to a co-worker as I wasn’t using it and I wanted to help him. I was constantly amazed by the colors that came out of the Olympus vs. the Panasonic.
    Of course I could keep both. Can’t have too many bodies. I’m sure both bodies produce wonderful images. At this point I don’t know what I’m going to do. Any thoughts?

      If you are using a Panasonic OIS zoom, that can well be down to the Dual-IS on the G9. Olympus can use Body-IS or the Lens-IS but not both. With extra-long lenses try switching to Lens-IS. The Dual2 on the G9 is fantastic for stabilising framing and getting an instant AF-Lock, especially long lenses on birds.
      My E-M5ii will only handle the no-OIS Sigma 50-500 (Bigma) on the tripod. If you have splashed out (used of course) for the Leica 100-400 the G9 thinks it's a toy but the E-M5ii struggles with it (and the 100-300), although it handles the G45-200 mark.1 (no Dual-IS on G9) or mark.2 (Dual2 on G9) well. With the 100-400 on the G9, the Bigma is a bit redundant but comes back into play as an astrophotography telescope lens.

    so because I gradually shifted from taking photos to making videos, the choice is very simple. I'm sorry to disappoint EM1.2 users but your sound will disqualify your camera for the videos. that's why Olympus came up with that external sound recorder, but that's another expense, and weight, and burden.
    initially I thought Olympus was superior in Auto Focus, because it's using phase detection + contrast detection, but with G9 FW 2.3 (now waiting for S5 inherited AF in ver 2.4 coming up in few days = 6th of June 2021) the Auto Focus honestly never failed me. I have to admit though that G9 AF on ultra wide lenses causes so much pulsing that you will HAVE TO use Manual Focus or it would drive you crazy. on the 12-40mm Olympus PRO lenses, G9 AF works perfectly well.
    I also can confirm that G9 works best with Olympus PRO lenses, which might be counter intuitive, but I have both Leica and Olympus PRO lenses, and there is not a shadow of a doubt that Olympus PRO lenses are superior in any shape or form. AF speed acquiry by G9 with Olympus PRO lenses is actually faster that when using Leica lenses. and Olympus PRO lenses just look sharper and have better colours, better bokeh / background blur rendering, plus Manual Focus clutch for instant overwrite of AF when you need it quick, just snap manual focus ring clutch, and focus on the exact spot you want.

      Do you see that the image stabilization is better with Panasonic lenses on the G9?

    • @TigerCarpenter

      @@zilveruitje most of the time I record videos of the workout / training, using the tripod.
      occasionally I carry the camera to the forest and then record action while holding it in my hand(s).
      G9 seems to have better IBIS, because of the slightly bigger chassis, the IBIS has more room to wiggle on the springs, on which the sensor is suspended like on the gimble.
      that's why in general M43 cameras have better IBIS than full frame cameras, because FF sensor is huge, and body is "small" hence no room for a good IBIS movement.
      EM1.2 also has superb IBIS, I would say almost identical to G9.
      definitely the O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) in Leica lenses PLUS IBIS work better, especially when you shoot with tele lens, and any small movement is amplified by the big focal length of the lens.
      however Olympus PRO lenses deliver much sharper image quality, better / smoother creamy bokeh rendering, feel more rugged and better sealed (I used them in tropical jungle pouring rain, and in Singapore water park). I would rather put the camera on tripod or monopod with Olympus PRO lenses, than use Leica lenses, despite they have OIS.
      I have both EM1.2 amd G9, and both Leica and Olympus PRO lenses, and I compared ALL possible combinations, and not only myself, but asking independent judges (people not camera literate), which images / videos they liked better, and it was ALWAYS G9 with Olympus PRO lenses. I asked many people, as if I was making a survey, to confirm my own observations.
      also Olympus PRO lenses are much better made. you will feel it in an instant once you hold them, and rotate the focus ring etc.

      @@zilveruitje I'm sorry for the Olympus, as it was my first choice image quality wise, and overall user experience. but if you want to make videos, then you need to use external sound recorder, as Olympus sound is totally unusable. I even bought the external stereo microphone for Olympus hoping it would solve the problem (and it was expensive) but it didn't. then I knew for sure the problem lies in the preamps and can;t be fixed.
      I spent hours trying to tune the wireless microphone level, and Olympus preamps level, making notes, recording 20 seconds sample sentences, and trying to correct them in post production. yes I did find a "sweet spot" where the sound was somewhat usable, but then when my G9 arrived, out of the box the sound was pristine, and I said goodbye to Olympus (gave to my wife who is more into photography).

      @@TigerCarpenter I think I prefer the G9 too, but I haven't used either of them yet. Lately, I mainly take photos, but video is good to have as an option. I also understand that the G9's autofocus for photos is better than the Em1 II's. The main reasons I would buy another MFT camera is: for better autofocus, a few more pixels (20 mb instead of 16), and I assume better dynamic range, low light performance, a little less noise. But the G9's video extras are also welcome.

    I'm very interested in your comparison of these two cameras. My personal conclusion is almost the same as yours. In lots of ways the G9 is better than the E-M1 mk II, I've had the G9 over 2 years now and love it.I bought the Olympus as a grey import for £639 with 3 year warranty. I've had the Olympus for just over a month now, being a glasses wearer I initially struggled with the E-M1's viewfinder, the G9 is much more comfortable and detailed. I've got used to this now though. Olympus design beautiful cameras, it's really a work of art and I love the pictures I get from it. I've been frustrated with the G9 with BIF shots and my PL100-400, I'm definitely getting much better results with the Olympus, it locks on focus very quickly and stays with the bird. Maybe the upcoming firmware for the G9 will help in this respect. Both cameras are well matched in most respects but my go to camera at the moment is the Olympus not because it's a new toy but because I love the pictures.

    The only question is perhaps in the shooting moving people, that kind of thing. The Olympus has phase detect the Panasonic not. One wonders given the software updates etc. If the Olympus is really actually much better at all or not. Panasonic has no phase detect at all, so one really wonders if there is much difference there. Also one may wonder about battery life, which seems to last more. I know the G9 has a pretty large battery. Best wishes!

      The trouble with taking nice photos on a TH-cam video is just that, I show nice photos. They don’t show what the camera will do. Unless you go to pixel peeking levels the compression on the video will get rid of any differences and as none of the output devices are colour corrected then any colours seen are not as per the photo. As I said in the video, I can discern little to no difference in the picture quality except perhaps a slight colour balance so if I can’t see it on the original at home then you won’t see it online.
