- Sony a7s III vs the little Olympus em1 mark III. Is Sony really going to lose again? A lot of people preferred the Panasonic G9 vs the Sony in the last test. What's the best camera? The Sony costs 90 million dollars, Olympus pays you to take the camera. We'll test colour science, stabilization, autofocus, slow motion. We'll pit the Olympus 8mm f1.8 fisheye corrected in post vs the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8. With Olympus digital stabe the crop is closer to 19mm vs Tamron with active stabe also 19mm.

Olympus has great auto focus, great stabilization and image quality, small cameras and great lenses. Really underrated system.

YEAH but no 4k60/50, no 4.2.2 10 bits, slow mo footage noisy, good 4kdci but soft 1080p footage, little sensor (20Mpx) and poor iso, lcd screen only 1Mpts, EVF only 2,36mdots, log profile too sharpen, not Eye or animal detection and ... 1800E (in my country, France) with a future undecided (With JIP Company).
Xt4 cost less than Em1 mark 3 with better video caracteristics, bigger sensor, higher dynamic and iso, worst IBIS and lens.
@@romainprovost7164 the iso performance of Olympus' newer cameras is quite strong. I have the EM 5 Mark III and the 6400 iso has very little noise (unfortunately it caps out at that iso). 20 MP sensor size for video and most photography work is perfect. You would only need higher mega pixels than that if you were to blow up giant wall sized prints of your photographs, but if you aren't doing that no need for more than 20 mp. The GH5s, which to this day is still one of the best video mirrorless cameras on the market is only 10 mp. The Olympus does lack some video features like 4k 60, etc, and it's my biggest gripe but otherwise they are great all around cameras. Few cameras on the market provide that overall package of good autofocus (it's much better than Panasonics), great stabilization, good image quality and small size.

I've been trying to convince people that Olympus wins on aggregate. They don't necessarily have the ultimate in every category, but you will grab the Em1 Mkii or mkiii because you will grow to trust that it will give you the best chance at a great result. This has happened to me many times and that is why I trust Olympus the most. Pray that Olympus stays in business, because they are on the right track.
This is precisely why I chose Olympus as well. I've tried many different systems and still own FF and APS-C cameras. And while on spec sheet alone Olympus may look underwhelming, in actual practice it seems to strike the best balance out there. Like there is no situation where I am ever like I wish I had a different camera with me when I have an Olympus m4/3 body.

I agree with others, is the price worth it if you're just doing stuff for youtube. I can see that the A7Siii benefits pro videographers but the Olympus em1 mark ii/iii is good enough for youtube needs. Other cheaper options like the G9/XT3/XS10 are pretty damn good as well.
That's the new price. I never buy new, unless it's the only way to get the lens/camera. What can I say - I'm poor!

G9 is micro 4/3, right? So all those lenses will work on the Olympus. So you're not giving up anything to go with the Olympus

About 80% of the video I thought the Oly looked better. During a few moments, like the very end, the Sony looked better. Some people complain about Oly slomo, but I thought it looked just fine in this video.
I love my Oly m II. The colors coming out of that camera are straight up amazing. It destroys the GH5 in terms of colors & auto focus, and has a bit better IBIS. I've read that the em III actually has better IBIS & auto focus than the em II. If Oly can come out w/ a 10 bit em IV with better slo-mo, I'd be all over that camera. Still like to see Oly or Panny make a f1.4 10mm prime. Great content as usual.
Yup. Autofocus has much to do with the CPU power, and the new processor in the E-M1 III makes AF work better. And better IBIS. When the E-M1 II came out, Olympus thought they were done. But they came up with a new gyro sensor design in the E-M1 X, and that's the same as the one in the E-M1 III. I second the 10mm prime!

A light weight 10-25 F1,8 would also be good.
I think the new 'pro' lenses are too big and heavy.
Love my 1mk2 as well, BTW, I know this is way off your spec, but one thing that surprised me was when I tried using the Olympus 9mm f/8 body-cap ‘accessory lens’ as a vlogging lens. Definitely worth the $90 dollars I paid, with very nice and sharp results when I tested, it keeps the setup very light weight, zero focus issues and tons of depth...

Olympus colors look noticeably better in this video. Sony grass is weirdly shifted to yellow. Sony clearly allows easier subject separation, but a different lens could give you some of that on the Olympus too. Content quality is always more important than image quality, but I’d choose the Olympus. There is no wrong choice, though. Both very capable cameras.

@@romainprovost7164 Yes, but many of those things will be irrelevant for many or possibly even most people. Specs and real world needs are not the same thing. As for JIP - Olympus gear will still work after the takeover. Also here in my country EM1-3 costs $300 less than XT4.

@@romainprovost7164 Depends on what you like to shoot and why. If you’re a pro with plenty of money and need the best low light and AF then probably Sony (or maybe Canon R5 even better). Olympus IMO is great for travel, nature, macro and wildlife if you want to keep a good balance of low weight and capability, and M43 lens selection is fantastic. Fuji is a good all around camera, maybe the best overall choice for most people IMO. But for my interests Olympus was the best choice. People should base their choice on what they really need and value, and not be swayed by marketing.

Wonderful straight up comparison. Stick with Olympus Lenses on their cameras. Would love to see same test with the 12mm or 7-14. Olympus raw - how can you not salivate at the thought! You should try it, I want to see it before I spend the money to get the Ninja :) I don't have a camera store where I live so I can't walk in and try it out. @@arthurbrown7501 no, the results on this channel show that it still holds up incredibly well, including autofocus. On paper you would assume it falls over, but just like this video, in real life it works exceptionally well.
It doesnt honestly, you are just trying to make yourself feel better for owning olympus. My brutally honest opinion is that they were quite equal, no one was blowing anything out of the water. The only problem is that one is alot cheaper. But of course all of sony’s strengths were not compared, so theres a discussion on whether you need the siii. But make no mistake it was not blowing the sony out of the water.

@@sabamacx it holds up if you’re a vlogger. This isn’t a “real world” test in a professional environment. It’s walking around holding the cameras. Having used many cameras over the years, the dynamic range and colors in the a7siii are the best by a mile.

Thanks for the 'shroom LUT hyperlapse bro. Yeah quite interestingly, the Oly's video color/contrast is more pleasing. I'm on Sony FF train now, but from experience, I never even thought of color when I shot with Olympus. Now it never feels right to me anymore, although I have fixed the color issues on my Sony in every conceivable way.
That's kinda how I feel about the GH5 - tried for 2 years to get pleasing skin tones out of it; literally every possible setting, bit rate, yada. So I finally sold it. Bought the EM1 mII on a lark while I waited for the Panny S5 to get in stock... and was blown away by it. The Oly immediately spit out a better imagine then anything I ever got out of the GH5 - like not even close. I sold the GH5 for $950 and got the em1 MII for $650, so I actually ended up making money out of the switch.
man that Olympus is beautiful, I want one so bad. think you overexposed it a bit in the sitdown scene in the park though, or just pull down the darks a little to compensate

The Olympus is the better vlogging camera. Considering it is at least half price, is lighter and smaller, and (important for me) does better black and white, it is a far better choice. Too many TH-cam reviewers want to write off Micro Four Thirds, but cameras like this is the reason the system keeps going.

Your stuff is always entertaining and funny, and I love squirrels, therefore I watch them, no matter, what the subject is ;-).
BTW, in most cases Olympus looks overall better to me in color and contrast , only sometimes there is some overexposure in sky and clouds.

The reason nobody talks about the Olympus is because it doesn't have 4k 480 fps slow mo. That's more important than IBIS IQ and color science. You know, for morning coffee B-Rolls.

I'm excited about olympus adding apple prores raw to the em1 iii. It should make the olympus a little better for video work, that isn't vlogging (unless you want to vlog with an external monitor). Hopefully my excitement is not misplaced.

With your FX6-like setting the A7sIII and Olympus look quite similar. Olympus has much richer green rendering though but struggles too much with its low dynamic range. Both look quite oversharpened.
If you can figure out how to tweak greens to make them less brown it'll look nicer than the Olympus overall.

It seems the squirrels have finally accepted you as one of their own. Perhaps as their benevolent god.
I think people prefer video closer to the Olympus when it’s for vlogging or “every day” style videos. The Sony seems to be more suited for “cinematic” style shots or short films etc....
It also seems to depend on lenses but yes I think overall the camera community chooses Sony over other brands for films. As much as Fuji people love the XT-4 not a lot of top tier youtube and cinema users are picking up a Fuji even though it's a great camera.

I've been a fan of Olympus for a long time. I really like the colors that come out of their cameras. That said, I just can't invest in a camera system that may or may not be in business next year... I bought an A6600 instead.
Even if a camera company goes belly up or leaves the business, the cameras and lenses still work. They will for a long time. And then, there's always the used market to find a replacement.

Joke aside (if it's possible on this channel) the video from this Olympus looks really good. If it wasn't noticeably overpriced, would be an interesting option.
I prefer the Olympus with Picture Mode off.
To get a clearer idea of highlight roll-off in different modes - simply shoot an out of focus lamp 1-2 stops over exposed. You'll notice an ugly hard edged highlight ring in Flat and Log but not with the Picture Mode turned off.
The dynamic range maybe less with picture mode turned off but it clearly has better highlight roll-off and therefore a less videoish look. It easily beats my GH5 (without V-Log) in this mode.
