    4 years later after publishing this video... the best ever comparison video!!!! Great work!!! I was looking for a comparison between the GH5 MkII and the EM1iii, but I guess it will be almost the same results.... Don't you think? Thank you for the content... it was very useful for me 🙏

    As always, world class review Michael. GH5 has a very important feature that is mostly overlooked: It shoots without time limit in all markets (including Europe.) That plus having both card slots as UHS II, let's you shoot hours of 4K video on a charge without over heating. Very useful for people who shoot events and concerts and cannot man all their cameras.

    • @jeffhalebopp
      @jeffhalebopp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kh Af, I 2nd your statement and can't stress enough how important it is not having an artificial time limit for people like me that shoot live events with unmanned 4k cameras at multiple angles and focal lengths. I use 3 NTSC G7's in 4k and it is imperative not coming back to an unmanned camera only to find out that it stopped and is just sitting idle! This has cost me dearly when my wide angle camera wasn't recording while I was moving my other cameras around. This happened to me many times before I discovered that certain Panasonic cameras don't have this insane artificial limitation.

    • @Lainer1
      @Lainer1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is topped or was stolen being unmanned. I'd worry about that more, I think.

      The problem is with 98% of the TH-cam camera reviewers, are that they never come with updates on the reviews... If it's not good at the first review, it's just horrible. But firmware updates really does huge improvements on the first flaws.

    21:20 A few pictures I picked the GH5 but overall the EM1 looked better to me. On #6 the EM1 is oversaturated on the red shirt, but the face has more pleasing dynamic contrast. On #8 the white background is so much better on the Oly EM1. Finally, on #11 the picture looks a bit overexposed but I love the sharper detail in the boys hair.

    Good, honest review: thanks a lot. I have an EM1 mark II and it is an excellent companion to my Nikon D500. I have no interest in video so the EM1 mark II was an obvious upgrade from my 2 x EM1's I don't use polarised sunglasses when out shooting for the reason you stated. I use is sunglasses with a yellow tint designed specifically for users of firearms. They do not hamper the EVF and are brilliant in low light. Polarised sunglases also make it difficult to view the head up display on BMW cars and the LCD screens of cash machines - it's not just the Olympus EVF. I only have the Oly 12 - 100mm f4 and the Oly 300mm f4 + 1.4 TC (I sold my other Oly lenses) but they provide stunning images. From my point of view, coupled with my D500 and Nikkor lenses, I have the perfect combination for my style of wildlife photography.

    If you're using quality glass and proper RAW processing techniques - we are in an age where the camera doesn't really matter anymore. The only way you're going to be able to tell whether a photo was taken with a micro 4/3, APS-C, or full frame is when you start printing 17x22 and above. I'm notorious for inspecting pixels and these days I have trouble identifying when a photo was taken with my GH5 or 5D mk IV.

    • @overnightdelivery
      @overnightdelivery 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharp as L This is getting to be true but M43 is not quite there yet. Using high shutter speeds in dim lighting is still pretty noisy. But in the next five years you may not need a full frame camera for top quality.

  • @Serenoj69
    @Serenoj69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fuji Xt2....to pull out the best performance you need a grip. Same for video. Still no IBIS and quite a few good lenses with no OIS as well. So I din't think that the Fuji is getting anyone better value for money.
    Thx for the very thorough review. I use Em1.2 since dec 16. I find it a very inconvenient camera as compared to my GH4. Fuzzy logic in the menu's one of many idiocyncracies in my mind: go to card setup...now there is nothing to actually setup there where you'd expect. Just erase or format. Not setting up the card and card II slot at all...etc. Gh5 is much easier to use for very sure.
    Also Oly has a tendency to focus on things outside the box you elected (!). So we have a crowd under trees and it focusses on the leaves that are most contrasty behind and above the people. time and time again. Face detection helps but I seriously wnder what the point of AF box is if the cam just rejects your choice.

    That the Olympus is fully weathersealed is in my opinion more than just a
    feature. Also the internal image stabilisation. Both needs a lot of engineering to get that done and can't be
    added later by a software update. That could be the main reasons for the higher
    prize.

    Regarding IBIS,
    I can't speak for the OM-D 1 MK II but the EM-5 MK II.
    A 16mm focal length seems to be the sweet spot for no over correction in the corner. I found this true for my Oly 12-40 and 14-150.
    I gather is has to do with the field curvature of the lens, which might make it harder for IBIS to not over compensate.

    fantastic review and great in-depth comparison. I especially appreciated your photo side-to-side comparison and having us pick what image looked better. that said, I was able to confidently know which one was GH5 and which was OMD (10/12 right). OMD seems to be higher contrast overall, makes very fair skin tones a bit 'harsher', and renders reds less accurately. Hopefully I can compensate on my OMD by lowering the contrast in-camera, and bring down the saturation a touch .

      Kind of hard to take this review seriously when Michael Maven is using two different lenses for each camera for the same type of test. He claims to be "as objective as possible" (3:06) but that's not exactly true. Using the same lens for the same test for each body is more scientific. Use both Olympus and Panasonic on both cameras if you want to be really fair.

    Nice comparison. Although i've have a couple remarks. I believe that photographing with sunglasses on is never a great idea, so for me that it is a non issue. Second in the burst mode raw sequence 101 for the gh5 and 167 for the em1ii is a big difference in my opinion and certainly not a tie in that respect. But apart from that still a valuable comparison. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the great quality review ! In the past, I went from Nikon D80 to Pana GH3 to currently Nikon D750 for both stills & video. Looking back 3 years ago at my m43 days with the Pana GH3, video AF was not impressive and when looking at todays Pana GH5 (fifth generation !) apparently it is still not impressive so I wonder if they ever will be able to fix this ... For stills I will definitely stick to my D750 FF camera I have for the years to come, but for video I keep my interest in m43 system and still do the follow-up mainly because of the attractive video AF and stabilization capabilities. Now for video only, despite all the pro video features on the Pana GH5, it looks to me like Olympus EM 1II is the clear winner for video AMATEURS like me, because of the better video AF and IBIS results, certainly when taking into account Olympus achieving these great IBIS results with ANY lens without the need for lens stabilization, that is a huge positive, certainly when using prime lenses. PS: I would be very interested to see Olympus video AF performance on their new 25 & 17mm F1.2 primes, if they can nail video AF on these lenses, then that would be really really stunning ! For video PRO's not using video AF or stabilization anyway, GH5 probably does the best job having all these nice frame rate, compression & codec options, which for me personally as an amateur I do not really need.

But I would suggest to do another test with the same lenses just to be clear. My own experiences with an EM5 are different. Every portrait is sooo sharp. Can´t help to find that a little strange... But... a really nice and fair test. Liked it a lot!

    If I ever get the cash for one of these I think it would be the GH5 for stills for the ease of use, and pro capture and the hi res mode of the olympus are not things I would use much if at all.
    Plus the GH series cameras seem to last a long while providing very god value in the long run.
    With all the problems the EM1.1 had I would wait to see how the mark 2 lasts before purchasing.

    Excellent video as alway you are very detailed please keep it up!!! Wondering for an all around camera would you pick the D500, GH5 or Em2? And what lens would you recommend to start with with the one you pick?

    I watched your video at 4K to see all the detail. Two questions: (1) When viewing your side-by-side shots, some are sharp and others slightly blurred (out of focus?) -- was this cause by bad AF or your manual focusing technique? (2) Panasonic Depth-to-Defocus works only on Panasonic lenses, I think. What is the AF speed when you put an Olympus lens (e.g., 12-100mmF4) on the GH5?

    For me the gh5 it's a beast in every scenarios but, it's a m43 and imho a m43 camera should be smaller and lighter than this, it's bigger than a full frame sony and this is a deal breaker, i've choosen the m43 primary for the smaller dimension and lightness that let me put the camera with other accessories on a small bag.
    The best camera is the camera that you can have with you all the time, and the gh5 at this point it's not the best, i hope panasonic brings out a gx9 with the same photography capabilities at a good price and smaller/lighter package.

      @wesbern 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what the LX-100 is for, a "point and shoot" that is almost as good as a GH4. That's the camera that I have with me "all the time".

    • @simianinc
      @simianinc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      "The best camera is the camera that you can have with you all the time." That doesn't even make sense. What if you're a sports photographer? Or a wedding photographer in low light? A photojournalist who needs a telephoto lens? You don't need a camera all the time, you just need it for your job. The GH5 can't be smaller if the market asked for dual card slots, a full-size HDMI port and both mic and headphone jacks. If you want something smaller, grab the gx85. It's still reasonably new, has great IBIS and because it's pocketable, it meets your definition as the best camera (although by that definition a shitty point and shoot or a phone is better, but then what are you doing watching camera reviews)

    Pro capture isn't 60 fps. Olympus Pro capture allows you to keep shutter button half way (with customized fps) to buffer the images so you can rewind them and pick up the right shot. Also try to shoot BIF and then talk about autofocus!

    Guys, we are really spoiled for choises here! It does not really matter which camera you choose as both are great cameras. I myself loved the handling and general feel of the EM-1 MkII and went for that one. I shoot some video but I do not miss the grading (takes too long for me). My personal "con" for the GH5 is that it feel like my old Canon 5D. It´s simply just too big for me. I am shooting photos for 75% of the time. Had it been the other way around I surely would have given the Panasonic an extra thought. I also might add that it is a bit jarring to me that Panasonic charges extra for ALL video functionality. It's not like they released the GH5 too cheap... In Sweden where I live, the EM-1 MkII body is priced 19000kr that is about 1900$. The GH5 body is 24000kr, that mean 2400$. I was surprised to see that the GH5 was 500$ more expensive (and still did not have all it´s video features.)
    Anyway. I great video with some surprises. Well done!

    Great comparison review Michael . Today I took a trip to Best Buy to play with the GH5 and the Oly M1 II . As I shoot 99% stills I found the EVF focus points on the GH5 to be very dim and for me a deal breaker. I checked all the settings and did not see anyway to adjust it. EVF was on default brightness Any comments ?

    Here’s a test for you. Everyone talks about grain like it’s film. Digital and film are apples and oranges. The standard for grain should be testing Kodak Tech Pan. Shoot at ISO 25 and develop in technidol HC. There is No Grain and the entire range from black to pure white is there.

    Wow i only picked the oly three times in the test... that wasn’t expected at all. I guess gh5 has better colour profile and dynamic range... at least in this test

    Great video man. Your way of analyzing the two cameras just makes a lot of sense! Well done. One question I have is why you mention weather sealing as a plus on the Oly and not the Pan? Glad I picked the GH5 as better on 9 of the portraits shots since I have a GH5:)

    Great review as usual Michael! BTW, is the GH5's follow focus feature compatible with the Olympus 12-40 F2.8; or you must use a Panasonic lens? That feature where you decide between up to three points of focus before shooting and then rack between them. Thanks!

    Question: between GH5 or Sony Z150 camcorder for video, what would be your first choice?
