    I bought a used E M1 Mark 2 a couple of months ago after very little research to be honest, took a gamble. It only had a shutter count of 1200, tested it and it was ...ok ish. Then I checked the firmware version and it was still on firmware 1.2 so updated it to the latest which I believe is 3.4 and wow, what a difference it made. So got a 12-100 Olympus Pro lens and job done, what a camera. To be honest I was stunned by the quality, I had come from Canon and thought I would try out micro four thirds. Not disappointed at all, very happy. Your video just confirmed my beliefs.

      nice catch, but i recommend downgrade the firmware, 3.3 is the much stable, 3.4 degrades IBIS performance

    Does it have a 30 min time limit or will it record as long as the batter and card last? And does it chop videos into segments which must be put together on your editor? In other words, could I record an hour and fifteen minute film with this camera and it will produce one file?

    I bought a used one too, a couple of years ago. To me this camera has the best ergonomics I have ever experienced in a camera. And coming from a Canon 5diii that is saying a lot. It just fits so perfectly in my hands. The ibis is stunning and the number of features it has is amazing. Pair it with a 12-40 f 2.8 pro lens from Olympus and you have an unbelievable combo. I only shoot stills so I don’t know how capable it is for video. If you have m4/3 lenses and can find a used one for a good price do not hesitate. You will not regret it.
    One caveat though, Olympus menu’s are a pain at first, but once you got it set to your likings there is no need to go into the menu’s again.

Currently shooting on an older Canon; tried Sony & loved the autofocus but the pics were too sterile looking & the cost of good lenses is prohibitive. Any experience doing jpeg quality B&W’s straight out of the camera with the M1, Mark ii? Thx.

      @powerforward1955 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris, which non-pro lens would you recommend starting with for all-purpose use? Currently, I use a Sigma18-135mm range on my old Canon. It’s Tac-sharp, but large. So when I can, I changeover to the 40mm. I’ve read a lot about micro 4/3 lenses, but have no experience with them. Thanks.

    • @chriswright6381
      @chriswright6381 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@powerforward1955 Ah that's tough because my favourite all purpose lens is the M.Zuiko 12-40PRO 2.8 (use this for 90% of everyday shots, except landscape where the 7-14PRO is my favourite). In the non-PRO primes I have the 25mm 1.8 which is super sharp (haven't tried the 17mm 1.8 but its meant o be good). To be honest I shoot most of my photos with the PRO zooms (7-14; 12-40 and 40-150). Hey, thanks for these tips. Good to see people still sticking with M43 for TH-cam. I feel tempted to change to FF, but the price point, just to improve image quality for a a few % points, compared to all the things I can do to improve lighting, sound, script, etc. One question, which M43 lens are you using? The one mentioned in the video? I feel tempted to buy the PanaLeica 15mm or 25mm for TH-cam, any advice?

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, all of this was shot on the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 v1. You can still get some nice separation and it's really flexible for going wide to medium. So it's kinda the swiss army knife of lenses without breaking the bank. The 15mm Pana/Leica lens is my favourite prime for MFT. Light, small, but extremely sharp and a good focal length for a lot of things. My only issue with it before was it was too shallow to get reliable autofocus on a Panasonic camera for video. Now, I'd be tempted to try it out on Olympus for sure - just not quite wide enough for vlogging on it's own, but I have the DMW-GWC1 wide angle converter which does make it a bit wider which is handy...

      Yeah I made a TON of videos with the M50 - you can see lots of videos reviewing it on this channel. M50 is easier to use and lighter but this one has IBIS, 4K (M50’s is cropped and no dual pixel autofocus), and log for better colour grading. And the EM1 is weather sealed. Depends what kind of videos you want to make but I feel like Nikon’s execution for video has never been solid enough for me. Little things like flip down screens, inconsistent autofocus, and weird processing of video ruined it for me. And I LOVED my Nikon D800 for photos. Never wanted to switch.

    • @shlawchablaas
      @shlawchablaas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely would agree it depends on what kind of photo / video work you want to do. If you're considering Z6 / 7 (II or original), the video quality is there now, and the low light is very usable up to 12,800 ISO and beyond, I'd probably consider 40,000 the limit. With F mount lenses, autofocus in video isn't quite as smooth as with Z lenses but is pretty usable and fine for stills. You get the full frame look, great dynamic range, decent IBIS, and pro weather sealing. I won't say too much on the EM-1 since Justin made such an articulate case for it in the video, but it would definitely beat the Nikons on price (XQD / CFExpress cards are pricey), portability (especially lenses!), and better stabilization. That said, I went with a Z6 and have been very, very happy with it. I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever you decide to go with.

    Have you tried using the E-M1ii with EF mount lenses? I was curious how the AF performs in photo and video with the new firmware updates, specially since EF mount lenses are so much cheaper than their M43 counterparts, not to mention the wider range of choices. BTW you should also try them with speed boosters if you can swing it, so you can get back some of that focal range on the wide end.

    Awesome vid: Question - I'm considering getting the G85 ($1200nz with 12-60mm kit lens). I've seen the EM-1 MarkII for $1200nz (Body only), although usually, they're $2000nz here in New Zealand. I'm probably going to video in 1080 most of the time - so is it worth going to the Olympus? Sometimes cameras that shoot good 4K, shoot terrible 1080. Have you tried 1080 on the Olympus? Was it any good? Cheers, Campbell. P.S - I'm mostly Vlogging outside - hiking, Adventure motorcycling.

    Greate video! I had the same issue with the GX85 and picked up a used E-M5 Mk3 and the AF is amazing! Just wanted to add that you can get unlimited battery supply, just search for "dummy battery" -- it plugs into the camera like a normal battery but has a USB cable on the other side. I've got one for the GX85 and the Olympus one works for both the E-M10 Mk2 and E-M5 Mk3.

    Olympus really does make some great cameras. I have a g9 which does have much better video features, but just doesn't have that quality of AF. If olympus would release a new body with 4k 10 bit internal recording up to 60p (120 is doable and would be even better), a real log profile and decent codecs I would probably sell my G9 and go back to olympus. I don't have any AF lenses right now, but the colors are just so good on olympus.

    I have a g85 right now and as you know the autofocus sucks. I plan on doing a lot of in front of the camera filming and I'm a one-man army. So I was looking at the em1 mark ii found one used from a local Henry employee. I played around with it and it is an amazing little camera and the autofocus just WORKS. Thinking of buying one and keeping the g85 as my second camera. I just wanted to ask about the 4g video limit, is that annoying or not that big of a deal? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!!

    • @JustinReves
      @JustinReves  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! So it only has a 29:59 limit - not a 4GB limit. It just breaks long videos up into 4GB files but you just drag them in in order and it works perfectly. I usually have 2-4 files for each of my one takes. My camera has horrible noise in the audio which is so unfortunate but no one else seems to have that issue. Doesn’t matter if if use the built in mic or an external, there’s a lot of hiss. It’s kinda put a damper on it but if I ignore that, it’s such a great camera.

Also, GH5+f1.8 75mm can take photos of cars 50m away and show me colours I can't see with my (good) eyes. It can auto focus in those conditions, too. Wonder if you considered a G9? I know it uses DfD as opposed to hybrid PD autofocus, but it's pretty decent - especially since the firmware update. The most recent of those also added the additional video functionality of the GH series, so it's a great value body for video too. I own the EM1 Mk1. That's considerably smaller, but for build quality and ergonomics I would take the Panasonic any day of the week. No need to flip a lever to access all the functions - there's a button for everything and plenty of options for customisation. There's also the advantage that it can use the optical stabilisation of Panasonic lenses augmenting the frankly amazing IBIS [even better than the EM1 Mk1, which I thought was incredible before I had the G9].

    • @JustinReves

      I did, but I'm just not confident in Panasonic's DfD. Everyone said I had to try the GH5 after the latest firmware so I got one from Panasonic and it was still really bad with shallow lenses. Missed a lot in a vlogging setting. Figured the G9 would be similar.
