Give Me an Answer - Do We Humans Know Morality Well Enough To Legislate Morality?

  • Program 1421 ................... - Legislating Morality - God Is Love - Forgiveness - God Judges Fairly
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

I have been watching Cliffe for years. I even got to meet him at his church. I just got back from my 7-month deployment. Thankfully I was able to download some of Cliffe's discussions. Some from years ago, and it is fascinating that those who resist Christ use redundant arguments or rehashed debunked arguments. Or they argue from an objective moral standard without naming their objective moral standard.

    • @bonnie43uk
      @bonnie43uk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

with this 'objective moral standard' thing that you talk about jrc, I cant speak for others, but I don't quite see it like that. Humans are social creatures, we all have a basic understanding of right and wrong/ good and bad, we learn this from our parents at a very young age. Forget all about objective and subjective standards if you can, and see it in a completely different way, we do things to benefit eachother as a social thing, some call it human flourishing. But we're also capable of being greedy, violent, hateful, .. those things are very much the opposite of benefitting the group. If wild animals can learn to live in relative harmony, and work together to hunt for food which benefits the group, humans, with a much bigger brain, are capable of much more. .. but we're also capable of much more violence and greedy. look at the money that people like Jeff Bezos have, and the good, they *could* do with it.

    • @bonnie43uk
      @bonnie43uk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jrc99us thats a great question jrc, think about it, how are we describing human flourishing.. if you look up the word flourish it says :grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly congenial environment. That's a pretty good description I'd say, healthy and congenial are wonderful words to express human flourishing, think of all the best things you like doing in life, we all share similar things in life, sport, music, tv, nature, .. the list of things we like doing is endless. I think it's fair to say most of us want to live a happy peaceful productive life. I've said this hundreds of times, and I'm happy to repeat it.. Humans are a social species, we love interacting with eachother.. I'm enjoying interacting with you now in this pleasant conversation, I'm thinking about all the things in life I enjoy doing. We probably share a lot of mutual interests in life such as Music, film, tv, sport. etc
Now compare that with the opposite of human flourishing, think of all the things you dislike in life or things that cause us pain and misery .. which of those 2 options would you prefer? .. obviously option one is far more preferable. Ultimately... i want to have a happy peaceful flourishing life.
Maybe I could ask you why you think human flourishing *isn't* ultimately good? , or if you disagree with my summation I'll be more than happy to hear your views. Ultimately, I want my time of this planet to be one in which my life has flourished. I'm 63 now and it's going along quite nicely, If I died tomorrow I'd be more that happy with how my life has panned out overall. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I've had a pretty good life so far. I'm more than well aware that millions of people on this planet havent been so lucky.

@@spacecoastz4026 Ultimately we are animals my friend, albeit highly evolved ones. Yes, I know right from wrong. As far as i can ascertain, i don't believe our morality came from some kind of supernatural being, we slowly evolved our morals over time. eg: a caveman living thousands of years ago would not have the same standard of morals that most of us have today. Even within the last 100 years or more our moral behavior has improved in various aspects of life.

I’m that’s untrue if Jesus created us in his likeness with free will to choose good or bad behavior then what exactly was the Adam and Eve story? After the serpent manipulates Eve and Eve gives that apple to Adam what does god say? He says oh now man know good and evil just like us and then immediatelycasts a flaming sword in front of the tree of life preventing us to become immortals and gods like himself. So no we were not created exactly in gods image maybe what we look like but that’s would be surprising because gods angels look nothing like us and it’s impossible to see his face due to some blinding light which humans do not posses lol or was it his “pure ness” I forget and the Jesus sacrifice now that you bring it up was that really a sacrifice if he just got resurrected I believe 3 days later I dont think that qualifies as a sacrifice if you just bring whatever you scarified back like for instance if your friend sacrificed himself in a fight and you believed he was dead then 3 days later you find out the doctors saved his life is that really a sacrifce because you still have what u supposedly sacrificed that’s i bad analogy ik um I hope u understand tho

Hello. I am an atheist. I define atheism as suspending any acknowledgement as to the existence of gods until sufficient credible evidence can be presented. My position is that *_I have no good reason to acknowledge the existence of gods._*
And here is the evidence as to why I currently hold to such a position.
    1. I personally have never observed a god.
    2. I have never encountered a person whom has claimed to have observed a god.
    3. I know of no accounts of persons claiming to have observed a god that were willing or able to demonstrate or verify their observation for authenticity, accuracy, or validity.
    4. I have never been presented a valid logical argument which also employed sound premises that lead deductively to a conclusion that a god(s) exists.
    5. Of the 46 logical syllogisms I have encountered arguing for the existence of a god(s), I have found all to contain multiple fallacious or unsubstantiated premises.
    6. I have never observed a phenomenon in which the existence of a god was a necessary antecedent for the known or probable explanation for the causation of that phenomenon.
    7. Several proposed (and generally accepted) explanations for observable phenomena that were previously based on the agency of a god(s), have subsequently been replaced with rational, natural explanations, each substantiated with evidence that excluded the agency of a god(s). I have never encountered _vice versa._
    8. I have never experienced the presence of a god through intercession of angels, divine revelation, the miraculous act of divinity, or any occurrence of a supernatural event.
    9. Every phenomenon that I have ever observed has *_emerged_* from necessary and sufficient antecedents over time without exception. In other words, I have never observed a phenomenon (entity, process, object, event, process, substance, system, or being) that was created _ex nihilo_ - that is instantaneously came into existence by the solitary volition of a deity.
    10. All claims of a supernatural or divine nature that I have encountered have either been refuted to my satisfaction, or do not present as falsifiable.
ALL of these facts lead me to the only rational conclusion that concurs with the realities I have been presented - and that is the fact that there is *_no good reason_* for me to acknowledge the existence of a god.
I have heard often that atheism is the denial of the Abrahamic god. But denial is the active rejection of a substantiated fact once credible evidence has been presented. Atheism is simply withholding any acknowledgement until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. *_It is natural, rational, and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstatiated claims, especially extraordinary ones._*
I welcome any cordial response. Peace.

None of the proposed gods would help us handle morality, even if they were.

If atheism is true, and there is no God, then religion is not an obstacle. It is just another subjective opinion that you happen to disagree with. Why? Because if God doesn't exist, then objective morality doesn't exist either, meaning nothing is right or wrong. Everything is just a matter of opinion. That includes religious beliefs. I get a little annoyed when atheists are fine with saying morality is just subjective, only a matter of opinion, but then get super hostile and act like religious beliefs are completely evil and wrong. A little hypocritical if you ask me.

@@parker6936 Yes, morality is very subjective Parker, but there are certain things we can easily see are not conducive to human flourishing, eg: rape, torture, murder, stealing, these are all basic things which all societies across the globe have figured out a long long time ago, way before religions existed. Who gets to say what is good and bad?, well, again, that's not hard to figure out. If you look at our primate cousins, they live in relative harmony for long periods, they have a social code, they know what they can do within the group and what they cant do. There are punishments for breaking those codes, a chimp for example may well get ostracised for breaking a certain rule.. maybe trying take food that he's not entitled to. The more senior chimps will happily give him a good slap. Have you not watched many nature documentaries.. it's common in lots of other animals.
Not all religious beliefs are completely evil and wrong as you put it from the atheist perspective, lots of aspects of Christianity I wholeheartedly endorse, being kind, loving and compassionate are wonderful traits. .. those acts encourage human flourishing. If someone attacked you, it's not rocket science to know that you would not like that.

This is perhaps the scariest realization I had many years ago, what hell really will be like. Now imagine demons, entities that were made before mankind, but hate man for being made in the image of God, their ravenous jealousy to have what we are made to reflect, the image of God. Those are who will be the eternal roommates for the people who have chosen to turn away from the ultimate Love and Sacrifice.

Thus says The Lord: Therefore, listen and have understanding: The Day is upon you, wherein I shall gather up My sheep and every lamb; even those asleep shall be lifted up, and the first harvest shall be accomplished in an instant. And though this Trumpet has reached in number many ten thousands, even now according to these millions, you will have only reached a very few when compared with the whole of the population of the earth, before the first harvest has commenced and is finished.
For I tell you a mystery, which is now made known: I am The Lord, and My voice a consuming fire, the sound of which carries to the farthest reaches of the universe. Therefore that which I speak to you has already gone out into the world, even into every ear. Thus that which I command you to trumpet is an echo of My Word spoken to this generation, so those who have heard and receive My Word, who also heed My calling, may seek out its sound to be blessed in it, for further edification, as a continual song drawing them to its Source.
Yet most refuse to hear, clasping their hands over their ears; rather embracing this world and its seductive song, which leads quickly down the wide path to destruction. For to the dull of hearing and to the wicked of heart, whose tongues testify to their own demise, whose ears are attuned to evil, their thoughts and musings contemptible, My Letters and My Word in the Scriptures of Truth have become a stern warning, an unrelenting siren blowing continually on the wall which ceases not from tormenting their corrupted souls; as fire upon their skin, as sand in their eyes, as burning wax dripping into their ears.
Therefore, Timothy, those who hear Me will also hear you, and those who refuse Me will also refuse you. And those who love Me will also love you, and those who hate Me will also hate you. And those who seek out this Trumpet, loving its sound, will help you. And those who forbear will fight against you... And so I shall increase the sound of My voice seven times, even as Jericho, until all things break and all are broken; many broken unto death, ground to dust beneath The Stone which shall be placed in Zion, for The Stone shall become a great mountain filling the whole earth; while still others, My hidden treasure, My battered and bruised sheep, the wild of My flock, are broken and come to rest solidly atop this same Stone, The Rock of My Enduring Promise.
Behold, My Word has went forth and sounds in all the earth, resounding through My body, by mouth and by trumpet. For I am The Lord, and I do not change; as I am, so shall I be and have always been; even from everlasting to everlasting, I AM. Therefore, I have spoken it and shall say it again before this perverse and wicked generation, though they can in no wise bear to hear it: I AM COME![1] THE TIME IS HERE! And behold I, The Lord your God, will do nothing until I have revealed My plans to My servants, the prophets.[2] And this I have done.
Give Me glory! Kiss The Son! For darkness is overhead and great turmoil has come upon this generation, the likes of which no generation before has ever seen, the Great and Terrible Day of The Lord! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth! For The Lord your God is coming down to you in judgment and for great ruin, FOR CALAMITY! Behold, I am coming out of My sanctuary to destroy, until there is no sin left upon the earth, until all things have bowed down before Me, to give Me glory! And to those who kiss The Son, to them I shall be God, very close at hand; even they shall rest upon My bosom. Yet to those who forsake Me, who do always rebel against Me and curse My name and The Messiah, to them also shall I be God, very close at hand - The God of vengeance and recompense! The God of judgment and justice!
Behold, I shall be The God of horror and dreadful signs to them and their idols, the destroyer of all their temples, The One who reigns in Israel who breaks apart all their false foundations, The King, The Mighty and Strong One who smashes in pieces and wipes away even all they hold sacred! IT SHALL BE BROKEN IN PIECES! Behold I, even I, shall murder every god of the pagans and of the Gentiles, for they are no gods! Even the god of the sons of Ishmael shall die in that day, for he is no god! HE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE ME!
Then they will know, I AM THE LORD,
For there is no other and none like Me...
The One True God, THE ONLY GOD,
    Whose fury has come in His burning jealousy;
Elohim, YAHUWAH, also being your only
Salvation and escape; behold, all shall know
Me and see My face, YAHUSHUA...
Bow therefore, and give glory to My name!
For it is time! Return to Me!

When you have a discerning mind, you can look into text without moral absolutism
Heaven, Hell, these are just constructs of our condition. They get discussed, but in context when they are mentioned, it's to illustrate the absolute tragedy of sin and it's repercussions
It's not a question of fairness, we're looking at a system that says "you all have had your eyes open to the legitimacy of evil, there is a grave consequence to that" God doesn't say behold I have cursed the ground, he is saying you _allowed_ sin to corrupt your body the ground is NOW cursed for your sake. You can do what you want, but the merit of your status is death. Everything you touch will succumb to decay and you're going to have to do things to the most efficient degree otherwise it would be sufficient enough to sustain your body and you will decompose
You see God set up the order, he cannot look upon sin because it is an order that he will have to correct like a lawn that isn't up to code. You violate that code, you're going to be fined. It doesn't matter if you're at the end of your rope financially that this is an impossible order to pay, you're going to have to figure out how to sort it out otherwise you'll be jailed. And in jail, forward progress in the private sector is halted to the point where what you can earn is negligible
It's not damnation, it's separation. It's still judgment, but one that attributes merit by how well you maintain the whole universe. That old adage, can't do the time, don't do the crime, well that message was speaking to you and me because the word Adam is translated "humanity"
Every sperm in his loins is caught in punishment. And you might say, hey that's not fair, I didn't contribute to his failings. But that wouldn't matter, your agency as a human depends on his profile as an installment on the earth. Meaning you don't have an earth suit apart from his blood. Therefore the bounds of human ethics, trials, and functionality exist within you all of which warrants your capacity to sin. You think you can do better? Well that is the wager of life
What God did is inhabit the profile of that corrupt fallen creature and demonstrate what it means to function to the order of a blameless person. This is why he is called the only begotten son, we set up for ourselves families apart from God's intent. But he set himself up to be murdered for our behalf so that the connection between us and him can take place again. It's like a lawyer, the court recognizes a lawyer and his purpose in the courtroom much more effectively than you or I wearing an orange jumpsuit. And it's not the clothes that make or break you, it's the stature of he who passed the bar and he who committed a crime
People reject the purpose of the gospel, despite being good news because they inwardly have rebellion in their hearts. They want to figure this reality for themselves, arbitrating laws and electing for themselves leaders and champions for their cause. The criminal wants to control their environment from a cage, not appreciating the structure and merit of pre established law
The bible is FULL of occasions illustrating man's attempts to replicate order in his own image. Time and time again it ends up with slavery, perversion, and murder. I don't think this is coincidental. Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and you need that kind of power to rule over persons who don free will

I understand we are eternal beings, and this life does have a sense of urgency, and that hell by definition is simply separation from God. I understand this, but what if you die at 17 years old? Or what if you weren’t exposed to the gospel at all? Because these things bother me (and others) I know it therefor bothers God immensely more. I have to believe that God is good and just, infinitely more than I am, and I need to learn to trust this.

It's good you ask these kind of questions, i have asked these questions my self as well and came to the understanding that eternal hell is just because sins have eternal consequences as well. We humans make sins small compared to what they really are. If i lie today i can understand the direct consequences but have absolutly no idea how much damage it has done through the generations of people. But God knows the damage we do with our sin from even before we do it. God has to punish people for what they do to the people he loves. Now comes the big thing he even loves the people who did wrong and that's why he offered to take upon himself the punishment we deserve.

The unbelievers are what they are, namely disinterested in matters pertaining to God, because of their incessant never ending campaign, of behaving and conducting themselves, and thinking in such a way, that they believe they have gained or potentially could gain the acceptance of that society of people, who is going to hell, whom they deem the worthy ones, who’s respect would be greatly appreciated. But this respect from such a group of peers would never be forthcoming if God was in the equation. Hence the reason for their imperviousness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus is God, why would he worship himself? Jesus is God in the flesh, the perfect example of how God wanted humans to be. God understood man was incapable of understanding a spirit completely. So what better way to show what he meant for us to be as humans then to become one and be the perfect human. It is not a difficult concept, if you break it down. People overrate the flesh over the actions. Jesus did things only God could do. Jesus did things no man did before him and no matter after him did. Clear evidence that Jesus is God. Considering the Bible is the most historically reliable book in history. This is undisputed even by secular scholars. I would ask atheists to show me other works from that timeframe that show otherwise.

One of the problems is man believes he is a "good person". That might be true but my compared to what. Man compares himself to other man. When man does that its not difficult to say "I'm a good person". When the day of judgment comes and we are before Almighty God we will instantly realize the we are NOT good persons compared to HIM. We will instantly know that we are not GOOD enough to enter into His Kingdom. The good news is that GOD already knew we would NEVER be good enough to deserve entry into His Kingdom. That it why Jesus came down from heaven to die for our sins . Look, we all have heard that God is Love, and it is true, but God is also Just and Holy and Good. Therfore He cannot let sins go unpunished . Jesus died for our sins to SAVE us from God's judgment. That is what Jesus is our SAVIOR!. GOD loves us so much that He sacrificed Jesus ,His only begotten Son, to pay for the sins of ALL man. BUT, is we don't accept Jesus as our Savior its as if we are telling God.. I don't believe in You or Jesus and I don't care what You did for me" . Ill live life according to what I believe and I don't need You to be my SAVIOR." God will respect your decision and will step back . But know this, separation from God is HELL. Everything that we know to be good is of God. Everything. So man can't have it both ways. You can't be separated from God and still have something good. Its impossible. So make up your mind before its too late. Day of judgment is coming. Once death comes its too late.

You sure did drew, that's probably due to the time difference when these video's are uploaded, 3 hours ago here in the UK it was 02:00am .. I get up early, but not that early, lol. It's 05:00 here now and I'm up, bright eyed and bushy tailed. Always good to see a new Cliffe video ( albeit an old video due to the Covid 19 pandemic) .. Here's a question for you, Did God create viruses?, if he did, he would have done so for a reason I guess, .. maybe to ensure populations were kept at manageable levels, idk. He has his reasons right? If that's correct, maybe we're going against God's wishes in finding vaccines and antidotes for these viruses, and we should allow the virus to cull the population. For what purpose would God create things like viruses, cancer cells, deadly diseases etc? Do you think it's because of Adam and Eve's disobedience? .. it opens up all kinds of questions if thats the case. eg: why punish the offspring for something that we had nothing to do with? what kind of Judge punishes the children for the sins of the parents? Didn't God know that Eve was going to be tempted by the serpent that God placed next to the tree of knowledge?, if he knew, then surely he's more culpable than anyone? Is it ok to question God's motives and to use our rational thought to conclude he was wrong to punish not just Adam and Eve, but every single generation thereafter? That seems incredibly pernicious and evil. Where does it say in the Bible that God told Adam and Eve that if they had any children, that they were to be cursed, and all future generations would be cursed? I have all these questions swirling around my head when I think about the whole Adam and Eve story.
Or maybe, we just happen to live on a planet that wasn't designed specifically for us, and we happen to share it with millions upon millions of other living organisms, some of which are deadly to us, and with the help of our scientific knowledge which we've garnered over the years, we're able to eradicate these invisible germs to ensure a healthy life. That seems a much more logical explanation. Do we know what Jesus ( or his dad) said about germs and viruses?
It's good that we can chat about all these things on here, isn't it. I don't mean that in a facetious way, it genuinely is good to discuss these issues and hear other opinions. The Covid virus has had a major impact on the planet, the knock-on effects on the global economy is going to be massive.

@@bonnie43uk As for the deadly virus thing: God created good bacteria, and when we used our free will to sin, we fell into corruption and dragged nature with us. The fall recorded in Genesis 3 brought sin, death, destruction, disease, disorder, and general chaos into the world. And as a result the bacteria that was and is good for us can now become dangerous, as well as viruses. God allowing that process to happen through ripple effects of free will does not equal God creating deadly viruses to kill of certain people. I hope that was a coherent answer :)

Why punish the children of the wrongdoer? As i said, it seems far more logical and coherent to me that we happen to live on a planet that was not designed for us, we share it with other living organisms which just happen to be deadly to us. If there was a world war 3, and we destroyed ourselves with nuclear weapons.. we have enough warheads to completely wipe ourselves out.. there are plenty of living organisms that would survive. Life would go on, without us. In the big scheme of things, we're not that important to the Universe.
