  • At UT Dallas, Christian Apologist Frank Turek from CrossExamined.Org has an enlightening exchange with an atheist named Carter. Frank discusses the following objections:
The moral argument is offensive because it says atheists can't be moral!
Why can't the universe be the uncaused first cause?
If we don't believe in God, He will send us to Hell!

Well unfortunately its like that about 90% of the time. Alot of Atheists have anger issues and has no Respect for others Beliefs. What they dont realise is that they are trying force their beliefs down on people but complain when a Christian is Talking about God to people who really do need him. The Hypocrisy in this world is Real.

@@lionbolt2136 You can't stereotype a belief like that. "A lot of Atheists have anger issues and no respect for others' beliefs." I am an Atheist and a lot of my friends are, we don't have anger issues and we aren't hostile, we are very chill people in fact. Just because we don't believe in something that seems absurd on the surface doesn't make us 'hostile'. If you want us to believe in God give us some real convincing evidence. You say Atheists try to force their beliefs down on people yet Christianity itself does that even more. I don't care what your beliefs are, believe in whatever you want, but when you say I will burn and know nothing but pain and agony for eternity if I don't follow *your* beliefs, that is the definition of forcing your beliefs down on me.

Nightmarex the reason people go to hell is sin, and we sin all the time and break the Ten Commandments. God’s standard is higher than our standard. God hates sin. That’s why He sent His son Jesus down to earth to die for our sins so we wouldn’t have to go to hell to pay for our sins, Jesus already payed for our sin. We can freely receive it or reject it. We can repent and turn from our sin and turn to Jesus or reject the gift of eternal life He has given us, He won’t force us. People sometimes say they want nothing to do with the God of the Bible, and Hell is a place where God is absent, but that also includes His blessings are not in hell either.

@@nightmarex4740 that is the truth of the gospel. It isn't forcing you, it's telling the reality of what we all are facing without Jesus. The reason we preach it to you is:
      Romans 10:13-17
[13]for "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved."
[14]How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?
[15]How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!"
[16]However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"
[17]So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
      And
      Matthew 28:18-20
[18]And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
[19]Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
[20]teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Also it isn't just us saying if you don't believe what we believe you will go to hell, it's God and His word. We are just passing that information on to you.
      Revelation 20:11-15
[11]Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.
[12]And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
[13]And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.
[14]Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
[15]And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
You ask for evidence, it's all around you:
      Romans 1:16-23
[16]For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
[17]For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith." Unbelief and Its Consequences
[18]For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
[19]because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
[20]For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
[21]For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
[22]Professing to be wise, they became fools,
[23]and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
We can't force you and we can't convince you. It's the Holy Spirits job to give you life and open your eyes, it's our job to tell you.

Mtec ok but what if we were born and raised Christian knew all of this read the Bible cover to cover and felt “his blessings”, but then realized how the Bible is just words on paper written by man and isn’t solid evidence of god, that the feelings of being blessed can be explained as a placebo effect and that there are numerous contradictions and paradoxes in scripture, but then realize how science is able to explain the world just fine without he use of a god in the equation, and what science doesn’t know it’s always learning more about, whereas religion always insists on the same thing even when outdated and proven wrong. how do you think you’d feel being told again everything you already learned was false? Having people insist they’re telling you because they care and you know they mean it because you used to. And how would you feel knowing that they really believe it but are wasting their time believing a lie that you believed for so long? It’s only a slight bit insulting but mostly it’s painful because we remember how that felt but now we know better. We don’t want to take it away from you because we remember how painful it is to loose that, but we also don’t want to lie to you when we know better. Idk if I’m saying all this right because I want to be both straightforward and understanding but I’m worried it will just come off condescending when it’s not meant as such. Anyways the best way I can equate the issue former Christian atheists feel when having these conversations I would say it’s 1 of 2 things.
      1. It feels like a child coming to you asking why Bobby said Santa wasn’t real and having to decide if you should play along or be honest
      Or
      2. It feels like someone trying to convince you that Santa is real when you’ve already believed and now know better.
One makes us sad and the other feels insulting. But I will always choose truth over ignorance any day.

That Atheist is a good sport. I can't help the urge to acknowledge how polite and genuine he seemed. He didn't totally dismiss the speakers answers and seemed to be able to follow the logic even though he disagreed. This is how a debate between believers and atheists should go. The speaker was also very polite and understanding. Respect for both.

@Brian I don't think we should be arguing on what exactly hell is as Christians. Instead, we should focus on our time here on earth. I think we can all agree hell is someplace we don't want to go but deserve to go to. Thankfully, we have the grace of redemption. Once we have that, we should offer that gift to everyone. Basically, my point is that hell is bad and all of us don't want to end up there. Regardless of what hell is like (burning fire or simply cold, desolate, separating from God), its bad.

    • @danielchung4973
      @danielchung4973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@Brian I understand. That is why we have Christian historians, apologists (like me, or I hope to be), theologians, so on. My point is that no matter what hell is really like, it's our job to spread the Gospel, which is free, and attempt to make as many disciples of Christ as we can. I think you know what I mean by that. Now, in the end, it's really up to the person's free will to make that choice, but at the very least we can know we gave them the opportunity.

Charlie C. For example the fact that the holocaust happened while uncomfortable to acknowledge is evidence that morality is subjective because if there were an objective morality we would be able to prove it and there wouldn’t be so much controversy over different views.
Or the fact that frank claims that to have objective morality you need a god but says nothing to prove which god would have the true right morality

    • @DavidReyes-qn1bq
      @DavidReyes-qn1bq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

Nothsa Rekcap There isn’t “controversy on different views.” Murder is a no no.
And I think everybody knows Frank means the Christian God. He doesn’t have to explain it in this 9min video, since he would have explained it in the opening remarks. That’s the way all debates work, you start the debate by stating your stance.
As for your second question, Christians believe in the Jew/Christian God. We believe that God is the one that sets morale. And for the rest of that argument just watch this video. You don’t have to worship or believe in the standards set by that God, if you don’t want too. If you don’t want too you can be in complete separation from that God.

    • @someoneonyoutube8622
      @someoneonyoutube8622 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

David Reyes I wasn’t referring to obvious things everyone agrees on, like murder, I was referring to the morality of the grey areas. Are you saying there’s no grey at all??? Because that would be pretty laughable so I’m going to assume that’s not what you’re saying.
I’m talking about things like if there’s 5 people tied up that are about to get hit by a train and there’s no time to stop the train, you have the ability to switch the tracks but you’d instead hit one person tied up what’s right or wrong then?
Is it better not to act and let 5 people die because of your inaction? But you yourself have not killed you just stood idly by and watched as 5 people died a preventable death that you could have stopped.
      Or
Is it better to actually get the blood of one single person on your hands to save the other five?
It’s clear he means the Christian god but once again That’s not my point. My point is regardless of which god he claims provides morality how do the rest of us know which god is the actual source of morality if any? If you’re going to claim a god designs morality the next step is to prove that your god specifically is more moral than the rest without that it’s just your religion’s claim against every other religion’s claims.
And what about the standards set about beating disobedient children to death with stones? Earlier you said something along the lines of murder is wrong period then state that the Jewish/Christian god is the one that establishes morality and killing children? Well that’s something condoned in the Bible rather than condemned sooo...

@@CollagenExpert Frank’s response is wrong. You are not being punished for not worshipping Christ. You are being punished for your sins. “for the wages of the sin [is] death, and the gift of God [is] life age-during in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
      Romans 6:23 -
God sent His son to take on the sins of the world, so that if you trust in Him and repent you won’t be punished for your sins. You are not punished for not believing in Christ. Your sins are what condemn you. If you trust in Christ, Christ bears the burden for your sins, if you don’t trust Him you bear the burden for your sins. It is a plea deal, take it or leave it. Bear your sins, or ask Him to bear your sins for you. Accept His free gift or live without it.
Now to avoid dishonesty I will admit that not worshiping Christ is a sin, because the Bible says “`Thou hast no other Gods before Me. `Thou dost not make to thyself a graven image, or any likeness which [is] in the heavens above, or which [is] in the earth beneath, or which [is] in the waters under the earth.”
      Exodus 20:3-4 -
If you don’t worship Christ, you either worship yourself by believing you are the master of your own destiny not God, or idolizing any one or thing that isn’t God. Those 2 sins do condemn you, but even if God took those out, you will still be judged for your other sins and you would still go to Hell, so accept the plea deal. Repent and trust in Christ.

Mason Stahl well in a sense that does happen, in some circumstances, sadly however not enough in the public sphere. A good example of those who are happy to debate is Tim Pool and Glen Beck here on you tube.
And I am sure amongst everyday folks that goes on, on a daily basis.
All that said however, I am only aware of one political party, The Democrats where their Congress men and women, although not a lot, not that it takes a lot. Go on to national television and urge their followers to, “push back, get in their faces, in restaurants, in Gas stations, in stores, in the street! Now that is pushing for anarchy. That is a party that refuses the will of the people because it never went their way.
In addition, because Mrs Clinton never won, she exclaimed on national television, to be uncivil, “we can never be civil with Republicans, until we have ground them down too The Opposition, in other words, currently, The Democratic Party can only act civilised if they win!!!!.
Mason Stahl, when elected leaders are pushing and persuading their followers not to accept the will of the people, and evidentially; they have taken them at their word. You have seen the news, how many Republicans have you learned about getting either doxxed or harassed when out with their families in restaurants for example??
The solution for a calming down of emotions, and entering civilised discourse, will only be found when leaders of the Democratic Party, start by apologising for their public actions, who knows it may even help them in the ballot box !!!

    • @nsr5961
      @nsr5961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Mason Stahl the problem however is that even though God exist, the truth about him isn’t being taught in these university level debates. Sadly many people have this false idea that God tortures people in a “fiery place of torment called hell” but that’s exactly what the Bible doesn’t teach. That doctrine isn’t only unscriptural but is against the very nature of God which Is love. Sin is what brings death. Death is just a state of nonexistence. Any sin big or small brings forth death to the sinner and not God. Yes God will in due time bring an end to this corrupt world but he’s giving all of us fair warning. It will be a destructing of the incorrigibly wicked. After that they won’t exist in any way or form. Those who survive will not be in Gods presence either. The Bible says that God made this earth for humans to live in since the beginning. Earth was meant to be a paradise for perfect human beings. His purpose has not changed and this offer is for anyone who does not wish to perish either by their own merits or God himself. All he wants is for People to leave their evil ways because sin is what gives birth to death.

Even when I was saved from addiction I doubted. Like any good skeptic, I could only prove the truth if what Jesus said was true. If you can use His name to heal people, then that’s something you can put to the test, correct? If He were really of maximally moral character, then He wouldn’t lie. So I put His words to the test. I prayed over my sister using His name, who couldn’t keep any meal down during pregnancy. From then on she hadn’t vomited once. Just a coincidence, right? Okay, maybe if I pray over my coworker with torn knee muscles, that would be crazy. So I do, and she feels no pain and can walk. Whatever, probably just adrenaline or something naturalistic. It’s not like she believes or anything. My dad’s snapped tendons from breaking both his ankles would truly be a miracle. Alright, he can walk without pain now and it was healed in two weeks. Still, gotta be a coincidence. The ultimate test came when I prayed over my wife. If Jesus could stop her from crying in the closet talking about suicide, and rid her of her bipolar disorder and chronic depression; only then would I believe. She stopped taking her pills after I prayed for her (I told her not to) and usually she begins having withdrawal symptoms after two days. She didn’t throw up once and she was a different person from that point on. It’s been about 8 months since then and my wife hasn’t cried, hasn’t had any suicidal thoughts, and is free of pills and feeling natural emotion for the first time in her life.
Now, I don’t really expect you to believe me. I probably wouldn’t. All I can say is, you’ll never find the truth if you don’t search for it and put it to the test.

@@Kill2Blit Yes none of us can see him but we have reasonable proof of the new testament being accurate and true and through other things we can logically come to the conclusion a God exists. Yes to us sin seems minor but to a Perfect, Infinitely Holy and Just God it is very serious. So yes God loves Us even if we Sin against him and hate him he still loves you but he is also Just and Holy. Reasons why Hell is eternal:
      1) We sin against an infinite being so even if the sins are finite it is against a infinite being.
      2) Who said people stop sinning in Hell. People probably continue sinning in Hell.
      3) If God is going to reward the people with eternal happiness, joy and peace and also give us earth but perfect like it originally was and this reward is infinite why should people who do the opposite not be given a eternity of the opposite of reward.
I know i have never met you but i care about you and the thought of you going to Hell Saddens me.
You should look at all the evidence of the New Testament and God. There is a playlist on this channel called "is the New testament true" that has a ton of evidence.
      Jesus saves from Hell.
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9)
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

@@danieltulloch5556 I watched some of the playlist, took issue with most of the points. I won't get into it here to avoid a pages long comment, im more interested in what you think of these responses to the hell is eternal stuff:
      1. I dont see how this is relevant. honestly an infinite being should care *even less* about finite events as they have zero impact on anything on an infinite timeframe. even if he does care, the punishment still doesnt fit the crime.
      2. there’s no way to investigate this so its a useless point imo. also, the eternal damnation was decided at judgement and is punishment for the sins during life, so any further sin or lack of it has no effect and is irrelevant.
      3. whats wrong with an ordinary world that isnt particularly good or bad, just in the middle? why does it have to be infinite happiness or literal torture forever? its a ridiculous idea.
any way you slice it, god is the greatest evil. any all-powerful all-knowing being would be capable of designing a flawless system, and if he wanted everyone to be saved he would have designed a system where everyone was. a being that decides literally every aspect of reality is responsible for everything that goes on in it.

Satan and his demons have access to Earth because they were banished from heaven. This is their kingdom for now. If God wanted to right now, He could blink Satan and every demon out of existence with a snap. But He doesn't do that because in life we are tested to see if we will follow Satan or God. Follow God, eternal life, follow Satan, eternal death/punishment. But God will dispatch every satanic creature so there will be no more sin.

Now I'm sorry you fell out But when you read the Bible expecting contradictions and fallacies, you'll make them up as you go, completely missing the point of stories. It's almost like it took over every molecule, became the air, filled my body and the space my body was in. I could spend my entire life trying to put enough emphasis on that LOVE, and not ever come close to even a fraction of it. To think I could spend eternity enveloped in that kind of perfect warmth, but not because of my own choice-- for me, that's hell.

One of the things I love about Frank Turek, is he doesn't just present an intellectual argument for the existence of God, but he presents a precondition for the gospel. I'm certain he also presents the actual gospel, maybe not in this clip, but he' has the setup here perfect for someone to contemplate the error of atheism, and to think, well, maybe God really is real. That takes a lot of preparing, and concentration. He doesn't talk down to the non-believers, and he acknowledges that they have very good questions, then takes their unbelief, and turns it upside down. Excellent.

I notice that too... if the question is about existence of God and the universe, he present the evidence or study for that, but not getting into the Gospel... and if the question is about Jesus or the Gospel or other religion, he present the evidence for the Gospel and Jesus... although both and related, he doesn't diverge the argument so much that it's confusing to the one asking....

I'll just take some of the S. U .R.G.E argument, for now; ignoring the preceding suppositions made by Turek concerning ontology.
It seems that you are "wowed" and others here are wishing for the education to be able to argue with atheists
precisely because your science education is lacking.
It need only be shown that Turek's premises are factually incorrect to determine that his conclusions are wrong, it should be noted, however, that his acronym is actually out of order and there is a reason that he does this.
The beginning of the universe argument must start with the beginning of the universe, which he actually places second and describes the singularity as both infinite density and also nothing, if there is enough information about something to describe it's properties and function then it cannot be the nothing that he is claiming.
Turek acknowledges the expanding universe, then claims that the second law of thermodynamics is in effect but dishonestly represents the law that only applies in a closed system to the expanding universe; an expanding system is not a closed system.
There is no need to address the rest of his argument regarding this because having his foundational premise being shown to be false, the scientific method no longer applies and there is no way to reach anything other than an unsupported supposition, further, Turek's claim that there was no time before God would necessarily mean that his Deity couldn't exist once time was "created" because there would be no time for a God to exist in.
I won't write an essay but I have only scratched the surface of what is demonstrably wrong with his pseudo science.

I have no clue. But one thing I will say is that you have an explanation though. But it would be very difficult for a simpleton like me to know if it substantially holds weight.

historical accuracy of the bible has *ZERO* relevance to its authenticity. Even if the bible were written by mere ordinary superstitious primative tribesmen. They would still know about towns , places, people , leaders kings ect . That's the very LEAST we would expect.
Herodotus wrote about life in 500bc he spoke of real people and places does that mean his works are inspired of god ??? Of course not .
If some future archeological dig discovered the ruins of New York and the empire state building would they be justified in thinking *KING KONG* was therfore real ???? Nonsense.
There is no archeological evidence for anything supernatural only the normal mundane stuff we find with everything else.
Almost every fictional book ever written will contain references to real places and people even Harry Potter it means nothing.
However if there were historical INACCURACIES (and there are lots ) that's a different story.
When was jesus born for example ? Because the historical evidence disagrees alarmingly with the bible on that for starters .
Quirinius's census for example we know conclusively did not occur until 6 ad not 3 years before the death of herod but several years after. And yes I know there was more than one herod, I can go into detail if you like about how we know exactly which one it was and can cross reference with Mathew ect.

No. They have evidence-no one can say that for God. People like Turek have to make you think there is evidence without showing it, (because there is none), and bombard you with theories and fifty dollar words so you won’t question anything-because questioning things leads to understanding what is really happening. They don’t want that. Just be a good little soldier and don’t question the Bible or God; ignore the contradictions, anachronisms, errors and such. Ignore the fact that there are no indications of God. Just go around thinking that something didn’t come from nothing-although that’s what the Bible teaches. Theres plenty of evidence surrounding biblical events and extrabiblical sources confirming the existence of and circumstances around the life and ministry and death of the Christ. It comes down to faith and rational thinking, that no one would die for something they knew was a lie. And if there was no resurrection as foretold, His movement would have died when He did. I know that you did not mean your comment to be disrespectful... But I just want to make you aware that this type of comment is what turns atheist off! When we tell atheist what they will never understand, and where they will never go, and what they will never see, we place them in a box that they didn't or forced by nature to defend!
Our goal should be to, not back them into a corner, but your help them understand what we believe! So just a slight change of words, I just ask you to not use phrases such as atheist will never understand! Because that in and of itself is false as evidenced by the many people in this comment section they have pointed out that they were once atheist themselves and they're now believers! We have to stop acting like we are more intelligent than atheists, and we understand something that they don't!
The fact of the matter is Faith, as the Bible says, is a gift from God! When you speak of your understanding and Faith as something that makes you holier-than-thou, what you do is you push atheist away because you are also a sinner! And all anyone would have to do is examine any of our sins and then look at our hostility towards non-believers, and why would anybody ever want to be affiliated with that?
Yes, call Sin what it is! I definitely do not advocate only speaking of peace and love and happiness! But, let's remember that it's not personal. "For our struggle is notagainst flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

      Stephen Machado
      1. That the person was broken at the end as stated in Pricilla’s comment. How do you know what he was thinking?
      Or
      2. That he was convicted by a Holy Spirit as stated in Ser Gio’s comment. Or that there even is a Holy Spirit in the first place.

    Loved this debate.
I spare a special thought for the athiests that he finds his answer in life.
I pray that that answer is God.
As Christians we are called to pray for others

The gospel is the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM!
Repent and believe the gospel! Follow Jesus’ teachings!
Jesus is going to return and set up the kingdom of God ON THE EARTH! God’s government ON THE EARTH! The Messiah will resurrect his people! The destiny of the Messiah and his people is to be ON THE EARTH! The renewed restored earth! God also dwelling with them! Rev 21
Jesus said the Father is the only true God!

I like how simple wisdom is. It is accessible even to a child.

actually Ive seen someone try to explain the dumb "uncaused causer" argument to a child, and the child was like "but why would everything need a cause but one thing?" the adult tried to play it off but the kid pressed the issue. "why does only one thing break the rules? what proves only one thing is capable of breaking the rules?" indeed, what has religion ever done in successfully proving only one thing could break a rule that arguably doesnt exist.

Do not confuse religion with the existence of God. You are free to reject God but do not pretend to do so by use of fallacy as you have attempted with the kiddy conversation. Do you agree there are many ways to be wrong but only one way to be right? Why should there be only one correct answer to say, a math problem or every other thing? Isn't that your argument? Well, good luck reaching for success using wrong answers. A thing exists or does not exist, is right or is not right simply because of how we think or what we say. However, the truth remains the truth even if none believe it.

which god? - and I do not mean if U believe in the Islamic god U r fucked when U r a Christian and vice versa - there are 390 000 000 worshiped in India only ! before U talking about a god U have to prove that the other gods are false - and nobody could do it until now
