Give Me an Answer - Why Do People Think That They Are Good?

  • Program 2420 ...........................Are people good? - Responding to God's Love - Faith based on evidence - Skepticism - Can we trust the Bible? ........................................
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

People think they are good because their definition of "good" is social standards, not theological standards. Keep in mind, everything the Nazis did was legal, so most of them thought it was good. I don't see myself as good, I'm both evil and good, depending on circumstances. But this is based on social standards. In terms of nature, I'm completely neutral. I'm only good by social standards because of the potential consequences, it's not so much morals but ethics, because it's safer not to do stupid things that cause more issues. I can't understand when people say "I'm a good person." They should all be placed in circumstances to prove to themselves that they're really not.

The reason you can't keep living in sin and not care about it and say "if I'm a Christian and Jesus forgave me" while you're still sinning, is that the Bible clearly says in multiple parts of scripture that faith without works is dead (James 2:17) and that if someone says they know God but don't keep His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him. God could have simply not created us and been fine with just himself, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, as Jesus said in John 17:5: "And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began."
The fact that God made us in his image means he wanted us to be in a relationship with him as he had been in relationship with himself - one in three persons, for God is the same, yesterday, today and forevermore.
God is relational, and he cannot abide sin, and sin came in with Lucifer's fall from grace, which was his choice, along with the third of the angels.
When Satan (fallen Lucifer) deceieved Eve, he did so in order to get back at God for exiling him and condemning him to Hell, as there's no return for Satan. Satan's only attack against God is for him to either get us to not believe in God; or, to hate God as he does.
We have free will and choice to, either, believe in he who alone can save us from this fallen world - Jesus Christ; or, contend against the idea of God by believing we alone are our own moral agents.
If we are our own moral agents, who can say they are without sin? That is the question, for to deny that there is no difference between good and evil is to deny one's own conscience, and to deny such is to not be truthful.
Jesus is truth. Without his death and resurrection and the blood he shed for our sins, we're toast!

Oh, and then He must buzz off when I don't want Him, coz who does He think He is?"
We really are Adam and Eve reborn, we want to BE God so bad, that even if He exists, He must conform to our views, logic, standards and limitations, and never go beyond them.

Thus the inductive argument that therefor the synoptics were written by OTHER sources far removed is totally false. In fact, Paul calls it scripture when he talks of the synoptics.
Church tradition holds scripture at the highest as the very word of God. God breathed. We can therefor be certain that Matthew was penned by Matthew etc.

A good counter argument to the person who says they'll die for a lie; So you would turn yourself in for a stranger and get life in prison/executed for a lie? If they say yes theyre a liar. Which is also kind of the point.

That's not a good counter argument. They never specified what lie they would die for.
Substitute in "stranger" for someone they care about then it'd be a better question.
Or maybe ask them what specific lie they'd die for, maybe they want to die for some cause they believed was good to promote, or maybe they want to try saving their dignity so they double down on a lie.

It is a great debate Rachel, I tend to side with the students personally, i think they ask great questions. I disagree with you that this 500 witnesses claim gets tiring, ... it's a very good point, Cliffe accepts the 1st Corinthians 15 passage as 'gospel' truth ( no pun intended). The problem for me and for many skeptics is that essentially, it's an unsubstantiated claim in a book written nearly 2 thousand years ago, there is absolutely no way in which to verify that Jesus was seen by over 500 people after he'd been dead for over 3 days, it wouldn't matter if it were 5 people, 20 people, or even a thousand people, we cannot verify such a claim. From my perspective, I have to ask what is more likely, that a supernatural event actually took place ( and many many others according to the New Testament), or, that stories were greatly embellished for any number of reasons. We know that people have a propensity to exaggerate and lie, on the other hand, we have absolutely zero evidence of a supernatural occurrence. On this basis, I'm reasonably sure it's not true. Can I prove it?, no, but by the same token, neither can you or anyone else prove *any* of the miracle claims in the New Testament. This is where your faith plays a key part in believing it.
I agree with you that it takes a certain amount of courage to do what Cliffe does, and he gets my admiration for that.

@@bonnie43uk thank you for your lovely, thoughtful reply bonnie. I agree the 500 witness question is a good one but my frustration with it is that no amount of witnesses at that time would be enough for most atheists which results in a unanswered debate and goes round in circles! I think once you become a believer in Jesus. 500 is more than enough but your right that comes via a step of faith.
I think sometimes what happens in these debates is that we talk about miracles that happened 2000+ years ago as 'evidence' but we don't discuss the very real miracles that are happening today. Because they are all around the globe. I'm not sure if you would be interested but I think you might enjoy them. Both family movies. One is called 'Case For Christ' whereby an atheist journalist goes on 3-4 year quest to prove the Reserection isn't true and focuses purley on the resserection. And the other is called 'Breakthrough'. Both true stories. And both focus upon Jesus and how he works in the 'present' You can find them on Prime Amazon and are two of the best films I have ever watched on these topics.

@@seascape1059 Thanks for your lovely thoughtful reply as well Rachel.😊 Clearly our mindsets are completely different on this, and that's ok, it's good to hear different opinions. As I said, there is no way to confirm this actual 500 number, or whatever number 1st Corinthians 15 would have used.. any number would have been just as impossible to confirm. I suppose 500 though is a heck of a lot of people and it conjures up an image in the mind of hundreds of people seeing Jesus 3 days after he'd been crucified and killed .. it kind of bolsters the Christians belief that if it says that big number in the NT, and the New Testament is the Gospel truth, again, no pun intended, then it can only affirm your belief.
Yes, I'm well aware of Lee Strobels book The Case for Christ, it's been a huge number 1 book seller all over the world, again, this for you affirms and confirms your own beliefs Rachel. I don't doubt Lee Strobels sincerity, he comes across as a decent guy, but it's not so convincing from an atheists viewpoint. I am hugely skeptical of any supernatural miracle claims, and obviously, the Bible itself is crammed with tales of miraculous occurrences in both the Old and New Testament.
My father named me Thomas, heh, maybe he knew I was going to be a bit of a doubting Thomas :-) ... if I see any credible evidence of a supernatural event, I will have to adjust my thinking. One of the issues with people is they think and/or say the New Testament was written by the same authors around the same period of time.
"I want evidence outside of or besides the Bible."
The issue with that statement is the Bible, specifically the New Testament, is a COLLECTION of testimonies to include a former enemy and persecutor of Christ, Paul, as well as the Roman's who lied about the disappearance of Jesus's body from the tomb. Call this what you want but that is not only HARD evidence but in any modern court rather convincing evidence. Enemies of Christ gave testimonies confirming followers of Christ's testimony.
Throw on the fact that most of the twelve died for what they SAW, corroborated by evidence outside the gospels, and contrast this with religious zealots today who die for what they DIDN'T SEE. Big difference.

He never once prayed to God that “he wouldn’t have to do it.” His words point to the fact that when Jesus died on the cross, all our sins-without exception-were transferred to Him. He was without sin, for He was God in human flesh. But as He died all our sins were placed on Him, and He became the final and complete sacrifice for our sins. And in that moment He was banished from the presence of God, for sin cannot exist in God’s presence. His cry speaks of this truth; He endured the separation from God that you and I deserve.

If the rules of evidence are applied to the four gospels, they are admissible in a court of law as eyewitness accounts of the events they describe. They also have more manuscript evidence to their veracity than any other ancient text we have today. The truth they lay out confronts us at the most basic level. It confronts our conscious and our heart. The standard of life is Jesus, how he lived, and why he died, and that he in fact rose from the dead. We only have this life that we are now in to make the most important decision we will ever make and that will determine where we will spend eternity.
Do we believe God and what he said about our situation, and accept the gift he gave to heal the wound that is in all of us. That festering wound is sin. That is what we have to decide.
