Thanks for the great review, very well done! This is a great camera, I've had mine for about 8 months now. To go with it, a few extra batteries, a decent shoulder strap, and a hand grip. One of the best things I bought for it was a Zacuto Z-Finder, so I'd be able to see the viewfinder in daylight. I'd highly recommend one of these for anyone wanting to actually see their viewfinder in bright daylight. Much less expensive viewfinders are out there, and would probably work just as well, but I found a good used one on Amazon, and don't regret that purchase at all! The only problem I have with the camera is trying to stay focused on aircraft at air shows... pretty tricky. About 85% of those pictures turn out great, so I'm not complaining, but any suggestions to improve that would be appreciated.

I am just going for a tour with my family at Singapore & want to buy a compact megazoom camera as I think this can be a great allround travel camera with this super zoom lense. I kept checking and checking then posted on Facebook and 5 minutes later it showed up. Praying to the Facebook gods worked. It was funny though because I ordered a case for it and they shipped it in two separate boxes. When I opened the first box it was a griddle and drip pans lol. I was panicked because I was worried the camera wasn't in the other box. (Thank god it was because someone from Amazon would have been driving to my house to bring it to me). And, I love it. :)

I own a HX300 and really enjoy the features. What this video has revealed is that the HX 400 will excede the needs of 80% of a photographer. Thanks for showing just what is available with the HX series. Looking forward to the 400 when I have finally mastered the 300. That will take some time.

Although you said that to take photos indoors we may want to check other cameras, taking a photo indoors with this one will not be that bad, right? I mean, it has a good quality indoors as well... It'd take an acceptable image indoors, so to say. Am I wrong?
just picked up a nice and boxed s/h example for under $200. Considering what this camera can do that's some extreme value. Of course it's mid winter here and no one is thinking about taking pics or video... so buy now for summer :-)

I have the OG HX100v and its great, I am thinking about upgrading to this though, has some handy features I really like, and I like that you can put filters on this one, the HX100v isn't threaded for filters. I am just a hobbyist photographer but I have gotten into Gigapixel images and it works great for that, use lots of zoom and take lots of pictures with good overlap and stitch them together. Works great for a point and shoot too for everyday use, I love overhearing people say "I wish I could get closer", well tough tiddies to them, but I can get a picture of the earwax in the popes ear from a mile off! Haha!
Can you increase the zoom on this camera by simply adding a more powerful zoom lens and which one would you recommend. We like to shoot the humpbacks from our condo window and find that our jvc video cam gets to grainy.
For the creative mods inside the camera, as you mention: Do you first take the regular jpeg and then you work it in post editing using the set of options? That peak focus, does it also work on video? Great for filming wild birds, if you're birder! Tested it out recently, vid on my channel. Use a tripod for that though, more stability. It doesn't give you the option of taking off the stabilizer as far as I could see...

John Thiophilus Glad you liked the video. The camera doesn't have RAW. I can't speak to how the camera fares against the Lumix because I haven't had access to that one.
I get this second hand camera..and im confused.. While i took pics of moon, there is some artifacts, also when i zoom something else.. Is there some kind of option, or something i can reduce this digital artifacts, or what else can i do? Im really confused :(

I prefer the Sony as the blacks are blacker and the whites are whiter and on the Canon, i find the image very soft and lack of detail at full zoom and steadyshot on sony is better and it also has a better Lens.
Zooming in on hot air balloon, were you at 50x optical or did you go to 100x which is supposed to be a lot better than just a "crop" of the optically zoomed image? I forget the name of the technology used to achieve this.

The HX400V does not have a 3.5mm mic jack; however the addition of the hot shoe mount provides the ability to use external mic...review coming soon for Sony's mic!
Can you put the lens on another camera , lets say a sony A600-6500 ? Or is that lens build in on that camera? If you can put it on a diffrent camera will it still maintain the quality of the zoom? Since the body for this video is specifically made for this lens , but the A600+ may not support that zoom? (Sorry for my bad english and also very new to the camera stuff ^^)
on the rx10 series if you change the size from 20 megapixels to 10 megapixels it allows you to zoom in further and if you change it to 5 megapixels it allows you to zoom in even further does this model allow you to do the same?
In case you actually READ your comments, I'd really appreciate any info you could share as to learning HOW to use this camera and it's many settings. I just purchased one and think it might actually be able to replace my Canon 60D with it's 70-300 lens! Love the great video included so I now need to LEARN! Sony's info sucks pretty much. manoj sindiri I haven't used the Nixon Coolpix P600, but I've been keeping my eye out for the SX60. I have the SX50 and really like it... I think the HX400 is a great value for the money. It may not have a large sensor, but you can achieve some beautiful photographs with it, without a doubt. You can use aperture mode to achieve a blurred background. Check out my hx300 expert series.

Great review. I have the hx-100v and the hx-300/b. I love them both. The 100 has the best lens cap cover that pops off automatically, but the 300 is difficult to get off. I mainly shoot wildlife, but out in the sun it's difficult to watch the screen. You said the 400 can be controlled by an android device, does that include seeing the image live? I think after seeing some of these new features, I might be buying another Sony.
by android device you can zoom in and out and take photos , even to save thae pictures on the mobile and the camera. you can see the target on the mobile screen while shooting and zooming.
ayman nour I bought the 400 and at that time it would not let you record movies while viewing from a tablet (droid or iPad). Since, they updated the firmware and now you can. It's a lot better than the 300, but the 100 still has the best lens cap that pops off automatically.
i thinking of buying this cam.... do you know if it has burst shot, and is burst shot able to be used in low light? if so please let me know, i loved my older DSC- H10 but it has become way outdated... thanks in advance.
Don't buy this camera if you want to work with it. For amateur use is great but if you want to do more complex things go for a mirrorless. And yeah I had this camera for a year and a half!

When I saw this video, I just couldn't wait to buy this camera, and i just actually bought one. It is an excellent camera. Some may complaint that the sensor is too small, but it can produce such quality pictures that can confuse people whether those were shot with a dslr or what? You are doing a great job here, best wishes for future An expert series for hx 400v would be great if you can do so, although there is an expert series for hx 300, but it didn't had my favourite feature [peaking] which the 400v does.

Yes, the camera is a very capable camera and the price point is actually very good for a camera with this many options and a lens with this level of zoom. There are quite a few more features that I want to show people on the HX300, but you're right--there are quite a few new features on the HX400 that would make for a good series. I'll keep that in mind. Be sure to tell your friends about the channel - some future videos will be a digital camera buyer's reference video that I hope will help many folks that want something different from the camera on their phone but aren't quite sure where to begin... This great review is one of the main reasons I decided to buy this camera. My expectations were high and I have to say - I'm a bit dissapointed. I have tried many things to get rid of that watercolour-grainy-smudgy effect the camera produces. ISO80, no zoom etc - nothing seems to help. I compared it's photos to some photos I had shot with my Canon PowerShot A4000 IS which is a small, simple and cheap compact camera and I have to say - it is so much less painful to zoom into Canon's photos since they don't have that ugly watercolour effect. I'm not a pixel peeper but it only takes couple of notches of zoom to notice that ugly effect on the Sony's photos. Upsetting. My Sony smartphone produces that same effect. I forgave it to my phone but it is quite hard to forgive it to the camera since it is said to be so great and all. It is also very hard to get clear macro images while handheld. Never had thiskind of problem with other cheaper cameras. Yes - the zoom is impressive and the video quality is good too when the lighting situation is good. But something else upset me - I had no idea that there were two kinds of HX400V - the ones with 50p and the others with 60p video capabilty. I was "lucky" to get the one with 50p. No informaton about that nowhere. Not even on Sony's webpage dedicated to the HX400V. Before I decided to buy, I did look at some photos that others had taken with the HX400V and there were many crisp and clear ones. How did they manage that? Hours of photoshopping? Is there ANY chance to improve the image quality? I better be doing something utterly wrong because this camera can't be so... bad. I still refuse to believe it. I really need some advice.
Hey . About 50p and 60p - change the setting from PAL to NTSC and you will get the 60p. Warning, the camear will reboot and ask you to FORMAT the CARD ! save all the files from the card first. I have the hx100v and hx400v. Cheers
Is this camera better than the Nikon D3300? Is the aperture bigger than that camera? Is the fact that this can't take pictures in RAW format important? I Want a camera that takes good photos during day and night. Also, is this cameras lense interchangeable?

I wish you had shown the operation of the manual focus, cuz that's a very distinctive feature in bridge cameras at this price point!

NeoEletto24 Yes, the HX400 has peaking and makes the manual focus mode much more useful. The 50X zoom is a lot of fun, too.

Can you put the lens on another camera , lets say a sony A600-6500 ? Or is that lens build in on that camera? If you can put it on a diffrent camera will it still maintain the quality of the zoom? Since the body for this video is specifically made for this lens , but the A600+ may not support that zoom? (Sorry for my bad english and also very new to the camera stuff ^^)
on the rx10 series if you change the size from 20 megapixels to 10 megapixels it allows you to zoom in further and if you change it to 5 megapixels it allows you to zoom in even further does this model allow you to do the same?
Which camera got greater zoom the Panasonic FZ2000 bridge camera or the Sony HX400V ?
In case you actually READ your comments, I'd really appreciate any info you could share as to learning HOW to use this camera and it's many settings. I just purchased one and think it might actually be able to replace my Canon 60D with it's 70-300 lens! Love the great video included so I now need to LEARN! Sony's info sucks pretty much. I especially wish to use this camera to do still photos of moving animals including birds in flight. Any help would be much appreciated! Jill

manoj sindiri I haven't used the Nixon Coolpix P600, but I've been keeping my eye out for the SX60. I have the SX50 and really like it... I think the HX400 is a great value for the money. It may not have a large sensor, but you can achieve some beautiful photographs with it, without a doubt. You can use aperture mode to achieve a blurred background. Check out my hx300 expert series.

Great review. I have the hx-100v and the hx-300/b. I love them both. The 100 has the best lens cap cover that pops off automatically, but the 300 is difficult to get off.
I mainly shoot wildlife, but out in the sun it's difficult to watch the screen. You said the 400 can be controlled by an android device, does that include seeing the image live?
I think after seeing some of these new features, I might be buying another Sony.
by android device you can zoom in and out and take photos , even to save thae pictures on the mobile and the camera. you can see the target on the mobile screen while shooting and zooming.
ayman nour I bought the 400 and at that time it would not let you record movies while viewing from a tablet (droid or iPad). Since, they updated the firmware and now you can. It's a lot better than the 300, but the 100 still has the best lens cap that pops off automatically.

Don't buy this camera if you want to work with it. For amateur use is great but if you want to do more complex things go for a mirrorless. And yeah I had this camera for a year and a half!

Thanks for this lovely review, i have watched all of your videos on youtube, and i love all of them. The way you provide information, helps to learn a lot. When I saw this video, I just couldn't wait to buy this camera, and i just actually bought one. It is an excellent camera. Some may complaint that the sensor is too small, but it can produce such quality pictures that can confuse people whether those were shot with a dslr or what?

An expert series for hx 400v would be great if you can do so, although there is an expert series for hx 300, but it didn't had my favourite feature [peaking] which the 400v does.

Yes, the camera is a very capable camera and the price point is actually very good for a camera with this many options and a lens with this level of zoom. There are quite a few more features that I want to show people on the HX300, but you're right--there are quite a few new features on the HX400 that would make for a good series. I'll keep that in mind. Be sure to tell your friends about the channel - some future videos will be a digital camera buyer's reference video that I hope will help many folks that want something different from the camera on their phone but aren't quite sure where to begin... This great review is one of the main reasons I decided to buy this camera. My expectations were high and I have to say - I'm a bit dissapointed. I have tried many things to get rid of that watercolour-grainy-smudgy effect the camera produces. ISO80, no zoom etc - nothing seems to help. I compared it's photos to some photos I had shot with my Canon PowerShot A4000 IS which is a small, simple and cheap compact camera and I have to say - it is so much less painful to zoom into Canon's photos since they don't have that ugly watercolour effect. I'm not a pixel peeper but it only takes couple of notches of zoom to notice that ugly effect on the Sony's photos. Upsetting. My Sony smartphone produces that same effect. I forgave it to my phone but it is quite hard to forgive it to the camera since it is said to be so great and all. It is also very hard to get clear macro images while handheld. Never had thiskind of problem with other cheaper cameras. Yes - the zoom is impressive and the video quality is good too when the lighting situation is good. But something else upset me - I had no idea that there were two kinds of HX400V - the ones with 50p and the others with 60p video capabilty. I was "lucky" to get the one with 50p. No informaton about that nowhere. Not even on Sony's webpage dedicated to the HX400V. Before I decided to buy, I did look at some photos that others had taken with the HX400V and there were many crisp and clear ones. How did they manage that? Hours of photoshopping? Is there ANY chance to improve the image quality? I better be doing something utterly wrong because this camera can't be so... bad. I still refuse to believe it. I really need some advice.

About 50p and 60p - change the setting from PAL to NTSC and you will get the 60p.
Warning, the camear will reboot and ask you to FORMAT the CARD ! save all the files from the card first.

Is this camera better than the Nikon D3300? Is the aperture bigger than that camera? Is the fact that this can't take pictures in RAW format important? I Want a camera that takes good photos during day and night. Also, is this cameras lense interchangeable?
it really depends on what you want, the d3300 is a dslr with a bigger sensor. What's your use for it?

Hi Stefan, while recording video the camera creates another file (it keeps recording) when the first file reaches the 2 GB size.
