I remember when nearly all landscapers used Stihl. They started becoming unreliable and now I see them using Echo. Taryl did a good job fixing this blower.
Stihl has become a low quality product. I have a Stihl chainsaw and a string trimmer and both are junk.
With the economy nowadays, people don't want to spend twice as much. They're both good quality, but who wants to be wasteful on stihl for the name. Not me.
Agreed , I have an echo weed wacker very happy going on 10 yrs now. I have a Huskavarna chainsaw from 20+ and also an excellent saw.
I got a br800 and echo 9010, the br800 is way more agile/maneuvarble in tight spaces like behind shrubs, etc and is more quite. The 9010 definitely punched through the big piles better though, but loud as anything
@M.TTT. Noise is very upsetting to people so I would try to avoid using the Echo early and late in the day.

its likely the techs (if certified) knew exactly the causes and flagged it. back packs are now to much work for the money. and telling the cust their better off writing the unit off. either way the cust is going to be pissed off and take their money else ware.
Every piece of Stihl equipment I owned was hard to start when cold. I switched to Echo, starts right up every time, no hassle. Plus I don't have to get ripped off from a Stihl dealer buying overpriced parts.
Most folks are using starter fluid or dibble gas in intake behind air filter
They hate the 800 and are switching to echo 😢😢😢
Sound like Stilch isn't pressure testing them seals during quality control time.
I've had an 034 since 92, been a great saw never had a problem.
So after watching I did get a few good take aways:
1- 50PSI is not too low for the machine to start.
2- Using a tap holder to lap the valves is so simple that its genius!
3-The guy that commented that this "big" blower is putting tons of carbon in the atmosphere is watching the wrong channel.
4- Junior is a good drummer 🎉
5-And lastly, Taryl should watch videos from a guy on TH-cam called "Taryl Fixes All". More than once have I have heard and seen Taryl say we need 3 things to make an engine run. Fuel, Spark, and Com-presh-yee-own. He also says the timing of the spark is important.

Well, actually, the "big blower" puts quite a bit of carbon into the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other carbon-based molecules due to the fuel mix. If you bought a 4 stroke blower with an oil sump, not as much of a problem. That being said, it's not tons, especially if it's only used for about an hour each week. Over the lifetime of the machine? Sure, maybe a ton or two but that's not a big problem. The biggest polluters overal is industry, so think of the companies that supply the fuel for these machines, coal-fired power plants (about 40% or 2/5 of electrical generation on the planet still relies on coal power plants) and some factories that makes automotive travel and small engines seem small in comparison. The largest pollution that's noticeable from Stihl blowers is the noise pollution.
Engine compression on most engines with a decompression system pulling the cord typically is around 60 PSI. That's something I learned from James Condon (@jcondon1). I also watched a similar video about these engines years ago from @Donyboy73. I think he had a similar opinion to these units as well but kept that fairly quiet. His videos are basically straight to the point and typically don't exceed 20 minutes. Steve's small engine saloon is similar to Dony in this regard but with some of the gimmicky qualities, not as whimsically weird as Taryl, the competent version of Red Green.

@@mikepink1337 Thanks Mike. I knew that before watching. Taryl stated in the beginning of the video that the 50 PSI should have been 100 PSI. And because I'm a little slow on the uptake I am guilty of dumping gas down the cylinder and just trying to get it to cough or run for a second or two. I confirm spark,fuel,and compression at one fell swoop. So in the video Taryl chased the low compression to the point of a valve job when it may or may not have been needed. So my comment was a round about way of saying that's 1 hell of a compression release.. lol Have a good day Mike

Wow, my Stilch blower has been GOLDEN!!!! No problems at all, except, well I had to do a valve job. Then had to put in new rings. Later on the spark plug blew out the threads so I put in a helicoil and fixed that. Oh, and the crankshaft ball bearings went out. But really nothing else. Except the carburtraitor snapped off, had to replace that. But that's about it. Oh, then the flywheel key twisted off like the one you are working on here. Had to replace the flywheel. That's it. It's been GOLDEN. Oh, I forgot the throttle cable broke and had to put in a new one. But that's all. Except one day the gas tank cracked and leaked all over, and had to replace the tank, but that's it. It's three years old, that ain't bad for a machine that's three years old. Yep, it's GOLDEN !!!!!!

This is all good to know if I find a new looking BR 800 on sale for less than $100. Lap valves, replace spark plug threads, remove flywheel, pin in key way and make witness mark on crank, red locktite flywheel. Keep an eye on gasoline tank, maybe bound reinforcement to some areas.
Run a lower mix oil ratio than Stihl recommends. I use Stihl mix oil at 2/3 gallon rather than a gallon with REC 90 gasoline and a double dose of Seafome. I have to drive about 20 miles to a REC 90 station. Its worth it. Instead of a 50:1 ratio that gives 33.3:1 mix oil ratio. I don't get any smoke and I'm using it in a 1968 Sears Allen Bradly chainsaw. The Seafome makes the chainsaw sound deeper. Seafood is not a gasoline preservative. It removes carbon, encourages cleaning and is recommended for 2-cycle engines.
With REC 90 I'm on my second summer old fuel and the mower starts on the first try. It is likely ethanol fuel in an engine dependent on mix oil for its lubrication that is killing the engine bearings. Usually a 2-cycle kills its cylinder piston contact surface before real damage to the main bearings. REC 90 is made for 2-cycle marine engines being stored through the winter. It has no ethanol and is intended for long term storage so it might have some other attributes.
Shilh throttle cable and kill switch are weak design areas in older Stihl string trimmers. The leaf blowers seem to follow the string trimmers more than the chainsaws. The kill switch isn't really needed because it almost as easy to just choke out the engine to kill it.
If buying new, Echo makes the most powerful string brush trimmer and it's light weight high reving 2-cycle. Echo's throttle cable and mechanisms are smooth and robust. Echo has a reputation for overheating in hot humid weather that I have experienced and will not start until a 20 minute wait in a cool spot. Stihl is harder to start, but are strongly heat tolerant. This is for older stuff in the 1990s.
My Stihl FS66 string trimmer would get slow after getting hot. I think that is because the seals are not up to the task. Other trimmers use larger diameter seals. They seem to need to be Stihl made seals because even though a standard seal, non Stihl seals seem to leak and Stihl doesn't make their own seals for it anymore with NOS going for over $100 a set! The standard seals of this size go for $10. I'm going to try another brand of seals.

When I was a landscaper we used all Stihl equipment and seen a decline in the way they held up compared to before. And this was awhile back. Most landscapers were switching to Echo equipment back then.
Thats what happens when you clean off your work bench. You can't find anything.
I have to have a specific place I put things and always put the things back where they go when cleaning up.
If I don't I'll spend half an hour wandering around looking for things, and yes, I keep going back to the same places I've already been and look again. I also find things when I'm looking for something else and think, 'My goodness, I never would have looked there to find that thing when I really need it in the future. I go ahead and put the thing in a much smarter logical place because I know I'm going to be needing it at some point.
I hate when that happens. 🤦♂️

Use a sharpie pin on the valve face and turn it again and then you can see if it is seated all around.

Echo makes some fine equipment...I've used it for many years. Still have one of the old metal-cased chainsaws that nobody ever gets rid of, just keep repairing them.

I was going to upgrade my gas blower this year, but then in Portland Oregon they just banned Gas Blowers. Weird, I still see even the city still use them. But ban them for residential users.
Go to work at the city, then have them help you get one. If you're good enough, they'll probably help you out. I did that once here, lol. If it has the city's metal tag, they can't keep you from owning it if you got it legally. 😮

I am a certified Stihl Tech, best way to lap the exhaust valve is to use a small piece of gas hose and after putting lapping compound on the exhaust valve use the piece of gas line and put on the top of the valve that sticks out of the top of the engine then use a nail with the top grounded off and put in in a cordless drill and stick the other end of the gas hose on the end of the nail in your drill and gently pull on it to lap the valve. Works real good, then use brake clean to spray off the residue compound.
Chickanic down in Arkansas has been comparing the Stihl BR's to the Echo PB's on her TH-cam channel for a year or so, and she's come to the same conclusion as Taryl about the BR's. I've got an older Husqy backpack that gets homeowner use, and gotta say that I'm really happy with it. Clogged the rings once using bad oil, re-ringed her, and she still runs like a champ.
Taryl, back in the day of Kart racing, I never ran a key. Simply put a tiny film of valve grinding compound on the inside taper of the flywheel, put it in time and torque to spec.. Never had one slip, turned as much as 7500 rpm on a Briggs and Scrap'em 5 HP.

Had the same problem. I used a round file and notched the flywheel to accept a piece of drill stock. Haven’t had any problems since.

If you can't see where the valve is seated use a dab of Prussian blue on the valve and move it around on the seat and it'll leave a good impression. That's a great repair hack so thanks to Faryl for the info. Please don't shut that door so we can hear that lovely sound of the leave blower. I love that sound at 06:00 when the neighbor goes out there and "gets it on"-NOT!

When I was looking at a new trimmer I seen those 4-mix things. Decided piss on that, if I'm going to have to worry about valves and still mix fuel they could keep it.

I have a Stihl ms170 with the cast-in flywheel key. It sheared off after about two years and 40 hours use. Most frustrating fix I ever had. Like the blower it would crank or not, maybe run great for 5 minutes then quit and not crank back. 30 pulls later may crank/run like new for a few more minutes. Had fuel and fire and not even hit on starting fluid. Stuck it under the work bench and just bought and used another saw till I had patience to not throw it away and tear it apart. Finally found the sheared cast in flywheel key that had the timing all off. Bought a $9 flywheel off ebay and it has ran fine for the past four years. That cast in key was a bad idea in my opinion, a designed failure point.

Hey Taryl this is an awesome breakdown tutorial. I moved away from a lot of 2 cycle handheld repairs and limit what I do. The flywheel on these units should be redesigned.

Its obvioua that they are designing them to fail, with all the materials science they cant produce a reliable product? Ive noticed the brands bosch, stihl and bmw ,merch have flashy products that just do not last. It all started with the mobius cartel in the 20s and 30s where light globes were made to fail.such a waste of resources and energy,there is nothing wrong with making business, but engineered obsolescence is undemocratic .
I like to do a leakdown test before I tare engines down. Because if you miss 1 simple thing before the tare down the you run into a fog when nothing seems wrong internally.

I have a brush cutter that was hard to start when hot, I thought it was the carb but it was the gap between the coil pick ups and the magnets was too great.
When it was hot the gap widened and spark was weak.

I own a 25 year old Husqvarna back pack blower. It always was a cold one starting in the Winter.
Always starts fine in the warmer weather. It is still running and all I have ever done is change plug, fuel filter, fuel lines, and some wiring repairs. Good piece of equipment.

Thank you for showing all of the neat techniques you found in repairing this machine. A lot of the newer equipment is junk when I purchase it. I have a Craftsman edger that is almost thirty years old. It runs good. I have to lap and adjust the valves once.
Bought a new McLane edger July of 1980. Briggs engine, still runs like new, 44 years old. Still has the original spark plug. Just use straight 30W oil, change every year, keep the air filter clean, and they'll run forever. Have replaced the blade probably 15 or 20 times, but that's it.

Years ago my buddy bought a Stihl chainsaw. We went to the Adirondacks to his camp to cut some small trees . I brought my 2 year old Jonsered saw. By the time he got his Stihl started(and was down to his t-shirt(Winter)), I had all the trees down. My saw starts on the 2nd pull every time. It is still running like a top after 35 years of usage !!

I bought a parts br800 that ended up having a loose flywheel with a sheared key, I just cut a slot in the flywheel with a thin metal cutting saw blade and created a key from metal stock, and off it goes!!

I have two of these blowers, one for over ten years with at least weekly use. The other is identical to the one in this video. NEVER a problem. I love them. I use non-ethanol gasoline in all my lawn equipment and synthetic 2 stroke oil.

The Honda you are referencing is the GCV170 pushrod engine. The other one listed in the recall was the GCV200, differentiating it from the GCV160 and GCV190 with the overhead cam and timing belt. The Hondas I prefer are the GX(V) series but I take what I can get and one of my mowers is an HRX217HYC with the GCV190. I was able to get it because it was a good price for 10 years old, only about CA$100.
I wouldn't choose Stihl, perfectly happy with my Echo and Honda stuff. That said, this year I am going to try Echo's battery stuff as well, mostly the handheld stuff and particularly the PAS-2600 power head.

Good morning to Teryl and the gang!
I own an Echo PB 9010. A beast of a blower! My one complaint is the wimpy detent on the cruise control. You slide the lever from full throttle to idle and you overshoot idle turning the engine off. Take the unit off your back and restart. Pain in the arse! I found that holding the throttle while moving the lever back helps avoid the overshoot, but, I now avoid the cruise control.
As a itinerate lifelong tinkerer/mechanic I really enjoy your videos. I’m sure you probably already know this but I’ll mention this anyway- I saw on your Stihl blower repair your dewalt 18vt nicad were dying I had the same problem and dewalt then came out with 20vt lithium battery tools. I went on Amazon and found a lithium battery that fits the 18vt dewalt tools and dewalt makes an adapter to fit their 20vt lithium battery in their 18vt tools. Great video on the Stihl blower… wanna buy a couple Stihl tools of destruction?

I don't work on ANY small engines at all but it is nice that there are people out there who know things. Things that by all rights should be _in the service manuals_ but for some reason are not. You ever said it yourself that these problems are very common with these so it is would only make it right if they put these in there so we can get them working. Instead that customer you just helped was probably ready to throw the thing away! I know I probably would have! I would have washed my hands of that thing once and for all throwing it out!
