I'm a line mechanic at a Honda power equipment dealer. I've personally replaced between 50 and 100 of these. I spent the whole month of February 2024 doing nothing but this. After that much practice, I can do it in an hour and a half.
I got pretty good at putting stators in 1200 Gold wings over 30 years ago, after the first half dozen I could do it in the 6 hours Honda would pay for. You had to drop the engine...
@@Dukerdr HONDA CX500 1982,dropped engine many time, ceramic seel. Put engine plate in oven to exspand it for seel, wife not amused 25 years, divorced her but still have bike.
Agree with you regarding lawn equipment and appliances. Since January I've fixed my washer, dryer (both 10 years old) and my riding mower (20 years old). All of this is possible because of TH-cam channels like yours !!!!!
Absolutely! Same here. Fixed my washer and two refrigerators with YT vids PLUS I fixed my broken governor in my B&S engine and a Tufftorq transmission both with Taryl's videos. Transmission cost $7.00 seal, governor cost $27.00, washer cost $10.95, one refrigerator cost $32.00, the other cost $19.00. All of them would have gone to the junkyard otherwise. Taryl has saved me a boatload! Imagine the cost of one new riding mower, one new washer, two new refrigerators! Bunch of $$ I tell ya! Oh, forgot engine crankcase gasket cost $23.00.
So I bought a brand new Honda mower last spring and sure enough it was defective. Just had it fixed by the local mower shop. I swear I almost ripped my arm off, It was really bad. They fixed it for free.
I had hurt myself good like that on a Subaru engine on a log splitter a guy brought here. I mean I woulda figured it out if thee idiot just told me it was hard to pull the cord start. But ya know like most imbiciles he just says it doesn't start. That usually means carb or coil to a guy like me. I mean if he woulda said me it is tough to pull I wouldn't have spent the rest of the summer in pain. I never did go to the doc like I should have and to this day when I have to pull something I feel that yet to this day.
I know, I know, not fun tugging on a mower engine starter rope that 'kicks back', but come on guys.....really, have we gotten so weak and SOFT and sissy that something so incredibly minor would land us all in the E.R. ??????
@@santaclause2875 no not really, but the snap-back on it is crazy! I grew playing hockey got hit so hard once I thought I went into another dimension and broke 5 ribs. I can handle pain but it’s kind of inconvenience when you pay for something that was over 1200.00 dollars and it dosent work correctly.
We get a lot of those models in the scrap yard. In fact, I have a couple here myself that I haven't got into yet. That is probably the problem. Glad you made this video for this problem. That's awesome. Thanks bud!
Fixing a problem with another defective part. They should go back to the flat head like what Brigs had for decades. Had one and beat the thing pretty hard. Pulled it around my field behind my John Deere 212, & made it mow tall grass. Rly bogging it down.
@@michaelbenoit248 they don't want them to last 20 years, they want you always having to buy a new one and they make the parts and labor cost almost as much as a new one "IF you can get the parts" like he said in the video, it's all throw away now and not just mowers that's with EVERYTHING
I've got two HR215 Master mowers with the GX160 engines. Great mowers, hydrostatic transmissions that are shaft driven and solid clutch system for the blade. Made around 1992 both are going strong and start on the first pull. You're right about the newer stuff I would trade my 30 year old mowers for a brand new one made by anybody. Thanks for your videos, I always get a chuckle or two.
I have a Honda HS55 snow thrower from 1980. The internal parts and carburetor are the original. When I pull it out of storage in the Fall, it ALWAYS starts on the first or second pull. Good thing because it DOES NOT have electric start!
@@kev1227200141most American consumers will throw it away and never even find out there’s a recall unless they did register one way or another. I suspect a very low percentage (probably 5% is about right) of people would even consider having a repair done.
@Taryl ... Love your videos, but have to say I'm totally "Blown away" with the way the industry has gone !! Plastic cams, No gaskets. wow .... 50 yrs a motorcycle mechanic, but never imagined this !!
We’ve been doing a lot of these at work. Easiest just to remove clutch assembly. Most the time I just take the engine off the deck so I have more bench room. To each their own, love the videos watch them all.
But how many other people showed you how too fix it correctly? That’s why I watch Tayral because he’s an honest no nonsense guy that shows people the right way too do the repair it really doesn’t matter if it’s a bit late time wise, because he’s in business and a customer brang one in too have repaired that’s why he did it! Thanks taryl
"THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK", part of the reason is on some documents the print is on the front and back of the sheet. By leaving a blank page the continuity of thought is maintained by keeping the beginning of important information sections from starting on the back of a sheet. If the sheet is printed on one side only then most likely the same thought process is in play but all sheets of the notice are only printed on one side. Also, the blank sheet serves to separate the "Legal Speak" from the rest of the document/bulletin. Morning Taryl and Mr. Camera Man
I just commented above that blank page area came from not only early industries that used products but the military. it was an inclusive page of exactly what you state. Service record and note sheet. Exactly that. I am surprised to still see it still exists. I just bought a firearm same thing had 2 pages with neat little lines for info and like 4 blank pages. You are exactly correct.
None of this is correct. Its because of how its printed on newspaper rolling dies & the Honda's logo being a separately owned copyrighted die from the company that owns the industrial printing press. Switching the dies from Logo to Content Text causes the space. Sometimes the die with the logo is large diameter so the "this page was left blank" is all on the same rolling die. - Detroit.
@@andrewchristiansen8311 Huh? It seems extremely unlikely that Honda desinged these recall papers to be printed on some weird newspaper press. Most likely they just send a pdf and have any shop print it out themselves if they need it. It wouldn't make any sense to include them with every single replacement part.
@@Catrik Then why do you have to adjust the valves on a 2024 honda like its 1952? Because of exactly wtf I said. Yes the rolling dies between Hondas logo and the content have an in between die that leaves the page blank. I live in Detroit and have seen this a lot. Not my fault you live in a consumer state and know nothing. You sound like the type to drink tea and eat cookies. I just had a cheeseburger & a beer.
I make good side $$$ on homeowners who don't know how to put air filters in and do simple maintenance. Most homeowners don't have common sense either. Most small engine problems are linked to use and abuse of the owner. If they'd use just a little common sense..................js
This homeowner could but I’m not your average homeowner. I’ve been working on small engines since I was 9 or 10 (43 now). My mower had this work done prior to me purchasing it, though it will be going to the dealer for warranty as the valve cover is leaking oil. My old mower has an Intek that Taryl mentioned are not good. Never had a major issue with it. Service the carb once and adjusted the valves a few times. Other than that changing the oil every season and new spark plug and air filter every couple seasons. I’m going to be buying the service manual from Honda for my mower for future reference. I can understand Tarly’s frustration with plastic parts as poorly engineered parts can create many problems, but even the best engineered parts don’t stand a chance against poor production practices or workmanship. I doubt Honda will say what exactly happened but it could’ve been a production flaw that wasn’t caught until the units were in the field. At least they’ve owned up to it and are fixing it.
Thanks Tarryl, I'm in the UK I've got HRN 536 registered with Honda but haven't had a recall notice but the engine number falls within their spec so I'll be making enquiries with our local dealer on Monday.
I work for a Hayter/Toro/Stiga dealer and they sell machines with these engines. We haven't seen any recalls yet. But someone else in the comments from a Honda dealer responded to a comment I made saying Honda have done a recall on their machinery engines.
Hey taryl what works for me on that valve cover is I heat it up around the sealing surface with a torch and just about 90% of the time I get it off without bending
My 91 honda 3013 rider still runs fine. Can see the cross hatching still in the bore. Was gonna rigid hone over bore it 10 thou but not even the force side of the piston etched out the cross hatching yet. So I'll wait. Best 160$ I ever spent. Basically a free GXV390 13hp at those prices. Even got a snow plow with it! Gotta watch all new things, even reliable brands. This is good to know if I see these push mowers cheap. Thanks!
the blank pages at the back of a repair manual is for helpful notes on repair tricks you learned on a specific job you rarely do so you don't have to remember for next time. at least that's what the old mechanic on my first job in a garage in my teens told me to use them for. all of his shop manuals were full of notes about tricks to save time on jobs. we got paid out of the time book, so if you beat the time, you're in the money.
Old guys are/were smart, I was lucky to have them a 100 years ago now. Now, I'm the old guy. Kid I was showing how/what/when took pictures on his phone. Phone crashed. I learned my trade at a Honda Power Equipment dealership back in the 90’s. Back then, Honda was exclusively a premium product. When the GCV engines came out, and they started substituting them for GX series engines on some applications, we were all profoundly disappointed. It was a huge step backwards in quality. Looking back, I can now say that this was the beginning of Honda’s decline in the U.S. market. They went from making a full line of superb power equipment in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s - Lawn tractors, diesel tractors, tillers, generators, water pumps, mowers, string trimmers, and utility engines for countless construction equipment dealers, to now being barely present in the market. They also used to sell power equipment only through servicing dealers, which meant that you could be guaranteed that the people who sold you the device were factory trained to work on it. Now, you can buy Honda at every Home Depot and farm store that wants to sell it, with no after sales service provided. When Honda did this, it completely sabotaged the servicing dealers in legacy shops - Small privately owned dealerships could never compete with the buying power of a Home Depot - so the service network was completely destroyed by this fundamental change in Honda’s marketing strategy. Honda’s latest, and last mower offering is a sad end to what was once a great product line. Honda Power Equipment - going out with a whimper.
Yes, Honda double bogeyed on the 18th hole to destroy a great round. My local dealer just closed, they truly screwed their dealers who were faithful to them. Now we have throwaway technology and you can bet the battery powered will be crap. If you have even a remotely sizable lawn forget about electric because in a couple seasons the battery will last about half the time it used to and the batteries cost about as much as the mower. Been there with the ego.
That’s because Americans are always chasing the cheapest most inexpensive products. Honda was just giving them what they wanted. Why do you think everything is made in China. Cause Americans like their stuff to be cheap. Inexpensive. It’s your own damn fault
I have a Mountfield with this engine here in the UK - thanks for the heads up - 1 yr's professional level use- checked the serial number and my UK model isn't on the list - cheers
I’ve got 2 of the Honda mowers with the half bucket. I’ve had great luck. I’ve only had carburetor issues years ago due to ethanol in the past. Now it’s only ethanol free with Sta-Bil so no more carburetor issues. I’ve always run them dry every fall. My brother used the E10 gas in my mom’s Honda snowblower and it was surging bad. Fixed that. My brother cheaps out.
Another recall Is Husqvarna trimmers. The 130C and another trimmer is on a recall for a fire hazard due to incorrect wiring on the magneto. It’s on Husqvarnas website as well.
Amazing. I just bought this exact mower yesterday. Serial number falls outside of the recall. Replaced my 25 y.o. Honda powered mower. It finally wouldn't start with starter fluid. The new one starts with a gentle pull. Mulches the grass and weeds to a fine powder.
You sure made this recall-repair look easy, easy money for your shop! I'll be looking for these Honda lawn mowers at the Portland, IN, swap meet this spring and elsewhere for cheap, and then I'll bring them to your shop for this easy fix! BTW, have you tried to see if your "tube gripper" would work on your toothpaste tube?
That's interesting that you say that - I have a 2007 B&S 6.5 HP Intek engine on my walk behind self-propelled mower. Bought it new in August 2002 & by August 2024 it will be 22 years old. I get about 14.42 hours of use per summer on that mower. It is now up to 317.34 hours. Bought a brand-new B&S engine that has a plastic cam gear in it that apparently explodes after a few years of service. Bought it for that sole reason & calculating the runtime hours to see how long it will run till it explodes. That engine is up to 42.6 hours of runtime, and it will be the four summer this year. I still have my parents 1986 Murray push mower with a 3.5 HP B&S Quantum flathead engine. That mower exceeds 400 hours (hour meter quit years ago) & still runs well. Smokes a little at start-up. Runs full speed and sputters at idle. The pull rope starter is also messed up & I haven't been able to find a replacement. The blower house was design to be easily taken apart by the owner for easy cleaning of the cooling fins. The blade is held on with one bolt and a concave washer that acts like a clutch in the event you hit a stick or rock as not to damage the crankshaft. That is assuming you torque the bolt to proper specifications otherwise the blade will fall off. Why go through all that trouble to replace the cam gear when the owner of that Honda is running the mower WITHOUT an air filter? The blade stop function is pretty kool on that mower, but.....
Love your videos Taryl. Really entertaining and educational to boot. You're likely one of the best small engine mechanics I've ever seen. Thank you again. 👍
GCV160 and GCV190 engines are great. I would recommend sticking with those engines if you can help it. I'm starting to sound like my grandpa, but the older stuff is usually better, per reliability and repair. GREAT VIDEO TARYL!!! TELL SLIPPERS I SAID HI!!
I got a Troy built with the 160 engine no self propelled on it... Ran it for about 10h with the bag of oil and Honda HR synthetic since... I modified the cheap air filter to fit from a previous model... Starts and runs good no problems
GCs and GCVs are not meant to be worked on beyond slapping a carb or a coil on it. Anything internal and you are better off replacing it if it’s on your dime.
you are so right about it being a disposable society. Thats what the government wants. I would rather work on the vintage stuff, they are built so much stronger.
It's not the government that wants this, it is WE who wants this. Most people shop for the lowest price and sacrifice quality doinng so. Quality products end up getting priced out of the market. Look at your big box stores. They shop for the cheapest stuff so they can advertise their "low prices." It has gotten to the point where the old quality manufactures have had their labor driven overseas. I wonder how much of this Japanese mower is built in China?
Boy, are you 180 out! Why blame the Government when it's the "bean counters" that DEMAND cheaper parts so you will be replacing products MORE often. It's called "planned obsolescence " and no, Joe Biden did NOT originate it. The concept started in the '50s under the EISENHOWER administration (Republican, btw). Everybody hates Government, UNTIL they need help. So, give me a f**king break!!!!!!
Um, its most certainly the corps that want things disposable. Then you need to spend big on a predictable schedule so they have almost guaranteed income for their shareholders.
My neighbor has a Craftsman lawn mower and nevered change the oil or added oil in the 15 years he owned it. He had finally had to buy one because the deck had a rust hole in it. It was blowing more grass out the hole then out the side. I like the toro mowers because they are light in weight. And I have my Toro AWD mower for 10 years with no problem yet. I keep my mower clean and wash it after every mow. I change the oil twice a season.
I have so many engines and parts I got to noticing around 1966 the old two and a half vertical shaft lawn mower engine as I call it move the carburetor to the other side with a long tube they've been that way ever since through the Flathead .. the older ones I have are carburetor right next to the exhaust like the horizontal shaft engines I guess it was moved for performance and heat dissipation Using the vacujet carburetor
I own a Hardy RR & love it. And on plastic/Hendrix, plastic was considered "fake." Showing my age? 71yrs old 😂. Now, plastic valve covers on cars? Because they're lighter.🙄. I'll be installing a drive belt on my Hardy RR in a month or two & will be looking at your video on it! Thanks! 👍🖖
Very good tutorial on assembly for this engine. TD did a nice careful job. I hope the owner can be bothered to keep a good air filter installed. No reason why this mower can't have many years of good service.
I bought a Honda Izzy yesterday which I haven’t used yet. I am quite surprised by your video which I have just watched. At first I thought this was an April 1st but am surprised that this seems to be true. Thanks. Apparently only applies to 21” model.
I had one of these junk Honda mowers. By far the worst piece of outdoor equipment I’ve owned. I thought by buying a Honda Mower with a Honda Motor, what could go wrong? I had nothing but issues. Wish I had my old Craftsman back. Long story short I bought a Toro and so much happier. Cuts twice as nice twice as fast with no mechanical issues in 4 seasons now.

I bought an HRR216 in early 2020 and it's been a flawless experience except for the weird in tank/hose screen that was restricting flow after about 3 years. I do change the air filter every year and oil every other year. It uses very little fuel compared to my Breaks and Scrapem mower. Perfect for small yards. It looks like they went down hill after 2020 and were never cheap for a walk behind mower.
Honda GCV160 on a troy bilt 240 mower. The governor sticks when starting but a gentle touch/push and it revs to what it should be. I've cleaned all of the linkage to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thank you for this information. Got here because I had this problem on a mower that is less than a year old. Busted up my finger pretty good today trying to start it...will be looking for an authorized repairman tomorrow.
I have an HRX217 pro Honda. I noticed how black the oil was that you drained and that which was in the valve cover. I change mine yearly and it looks just like it did when I put it in fresh. I guess leaving the air filter out did that. I do new oil, air filter, plug each year. It's a wonderful mower. Will continue to take good care of it.
Nice Honda mower - hate to see a lawn mower running without the air filter. In the case of this particular mower, the recall probably saved what was left of this mower's life. The longer that mower ran without the air filter, the shorter that mower's lifespan. The recall allowed a dialogue to occur between the mower shop and the owner to let the owner know about the importance of the air filter being in place and maybe even routine maintenance in general.
I have an 80s Snapper Hi-Vac professional with a Wisconsin Robin engine. Great walk behind. Essentially built to last forever. I wish they still made stuff like that.
If you think Honda lawn mower owners are annoying, you should see the motorcycle owners. Honda went 20+ years without making a decent woods motorcycle or dual sport bike. While others made them well under 250 lbs theirs were stuck at well over 300-350 lbs for 20+ years. "Oh but they're so reliable". Yeah I've had them all. Zero difference other than a ton of weight.
@@FishFind3000 *Their. While others are 238. The RX450 is a pretty decent bike. I've ridden that. The XRL is under-powered and heavy still. 250 and 300 are still over 300 lbs.
I had the same problem with the Honda GCV-190 engine on the Honda HRX-217. However, I purchased this mower almost 7 years ago from an eBay seller, not a dealer. I have no idea what to do about a recall. This engine has the plastic cam shaft and one exhaust valve is now bent and stuck in the closed positioned. I need some advice here.
I just got mine back from this fix. Actually, mine wasn't acting up either, but it will be interesting to see what they did. "Still lovin on that Honda?" Given the choice between this and either a Briggs & Scrapiron, or Pot-metal Special Tecumseh...YES! (My #1 choice would be the Kawasucki with its pressurized oil filtration, but those are $$$$$)
3 months later my Honda mower engine is "eating itself." LOTs of smoke, and high oil consumption. The oil is gray colored which tells me the engine is "making metal."
Those Hrx217 unit are garbage . in addition to this problem with the motor there are other problems as well . ive had three units through my place here for this problem . the Plastic front ends get broken easily (cheap plastic crap) I was able to patch one but had to replace two others . also the retaining screws for the front end are subject to failure ( the pem nuts strip out inside the plastic making it super hard to remove the retaining screws ) like I said piece-o-chito .
Thanks Taryl, you da man! Did my first one today after watching your video last night. 3.5 hrs, no blade clutch , went pretty smooth except for glue & patch time, them castings are way sharp! Beware!
That disassembly honestly doesn't seem that bad, I've taken apart a lot of old engines and I still enjoy doing so and I do not like new engines but there's been times when I've wished you could just change a cylinder and keep a block or vice versa to save something.
Man, I need a new push mower mainly for trimming my ditches, what's a good one to look for that has a solid and long lasting motor? I prefer to skip over the plastic engine parts models, lol.
Great job, i always enjoy your time showing us how to fix things the proper way W/a flair, can a suction cup tool pull that valve cover off, & can you make gaskets for that engine
Those 170's/200's are more of a pian in the ars to work on than the 160's/190's! I haven't seen the inside of the newer Hondas, but now i have 😮 Thanks Taryl 👍🏼
My brother's had his gcv170 for a few years without problems. My dad's gcv160 been going strong for almost 20 years. I don't have a yard or lawn mower. 🤷♂
Great video! I bought two of these for cheap, one has a slightly bent crankshaft - didn't realize it would be $155 to $225 to replace! Ridiculous, that's more than I paid for both mowers. Anyone know where to find a used or less expensive crank for these? :)

@@timkalal6983 When i was working at a JD dealership as a machanic they were also a Honda dealer this problem started almost 2 yrs ago with Honda mowers the over priced mowers were coming in left and right not just for a camshaft problems but for other issues that $ 900 mower and that's the real price BTW if you don't keep underneath the mower clean after every use the self propelled would not work until you cleaned underneath the and mowing wet grass was a Huge NO NO
@@WJCTechyman Two different lines of Toros with Personal Pace - Super Recyclers with the cast deck and Recyclers with the stamped steel deck. If you invest in the top of the line Super Recycler, it will rival any top of the line Honda for cut quality and price. The top of the line Hondas use a hydrostatic transmission. Personal Pace is a much simpler system than a hydrostatic transmission.
Although the Kohler engine uses platic cams at least they put them on top! I honestly don't have a problem with plastic but radiators, manifolds, and cams. Come on, that's taking it way too far. Another funny thing I just thought of is the one-piece jug/head assembly. It's 2024 and that kind of engine construction was popular in the early 1900's to about 1920. Wtf?
Let it settle out for a week or two in see through containers and then gently syphon the gasoline off the top of the water (which will be on the bottom). Then put this gasoline in your car's fuel tank and use it.... The water can be put in pans outside to evaporate away....
Ive had mowers in the past jerk pull cord from my hand due to a timing issue because someone ran over something and the blade hit it and just tweeked the flywheel key enough to through timing off but not enough so it wouldnt fire! Hurt like a "you know what"! Yeah, like that!😢
Hard to believe someone would run a lawn mower without a filter. Lawn mowers work in extremely dirty conditions. Like Taryl said, the engine in that Honda walk behind will be short lived due to the owner not replacing the old filter with a new one. This particular owner should own an electric mower. Electric mowers are perfect for people who don't like to maintain their outdoor power equipment. I for one, enjoy maintaining my outdoor power equipment along with all my vehicles. No electric for me. By the way, the rechargeable batteries used are a recyclable nightmare. Not to mention China is the one profiting from all the batteries being made and sold worldwide. GM and Ford lost big time trying to appease a corrupt government's push to go electric. Vote wisely in November, the life of our nation and our freedom is in the balance. Like Taryl said, and I totally agree, rechargeable batteries are the enemy. Great video Taryl really enjoyed it.
Dude where have you been? I went through three of these last year starting in April of 2023. In addition after the camshaft was replaced, the engine failed and needed complete replacement and the tranny failed. All on a HRX217HZA with less than a year of residential use. Finally a year later it runs like a champ, but essentially a brand new engine and transmission so effectively a new mower!!
Bought a Ryobi electric mower 4 years ago I already had the weedwacker I have a quarter acre lot ,no more oil changes, pull start, gas I love it I don't miss my beloved Briggs and Stratton just slide in the battery and go.
I almost bought one last year and decided to go with an Ego instead. I was told that Honda are finishing with gas mowers and moving to electric. I still have my Husqvarna HU800AWD(Honda Engine) and that thing has never had an issue not even so much as a belt. It’s clear even Honda are cheaping out on parts just like their blower redesign since 2012 are nowhere near the quality of their older blowers.
I went to replace the Camshaft in my 1979 Z-28 Camaro with 14,000 miles on it and it had 4 bad lifters.. 3:73 gears and no overdrive would really buzz the engine.. I also had a 1979 Chevy 4x4 Hhalf ton pickup with the same "LM-1" Engine in it.. It had 76,000 miles and you could hear the lifters clattering .. the cam had gone bad in that Truck too .. Years later I found out that GM had a recall on them. I bought a Winter Beater '73 Chevy Chevelle for $300.00 the heads and tappet covers were totally full of sludge.. I replaced the heads with heads from a 1970 Chevy Impala I had that had 64 CC heads instead of 76 CC heads and I put the cam and timing chain out of the Camaro in the Chevelle with 4 new lifters..
When I built my push mower I used a Murray deck and a Honda engine. The engine wasn't this new but either way it was good until it wasn't. I ended up with the quantum series B&S which is the last of the Briggs and Stratton flatheads. I removed the aluminum flywheel and replaced it with a cast iron flywheel and it's a BEAST. I removed the mulch plug and installed a side discharge and I mulch with the way I mow. Going back with the B&S quantum was the best thing I ever did and I have a parts engine.
Quantum and the Sprint engines were brilliant little engines. Only issues with the sprint engines were the diaphragm getting damaged by the ethanol in the fuel. The newer engines aren't great.
I fail to understand why a 5hp or so small engine needs a compression release or why the failure of said compression release would be a “Safety Issue”. I’ve had plenty of small engine that didn’t have a compression release and they were still very easy to pull. These engines run on pump gas so there isn’t any way there running more then 11 or 12:1 compression ratios. Hell my sled doesn’t have a compression release, but I’ll admit that 800cc twin can be a bitch to pull when it’s -20F. I’ve broken several recoil assemblies on that sled as a result. But a small engine? Come on if you can’t pull it over without a compression release then you probably are too weak to even push the mower so it’s a moot point anyways!
It’s got a blade break clutch so it won’t have the weight of the blade. So it would kick back easily. Have you ever tried to start a lawnmower with no blade.
@@WJCTechyman That’s what I am saying. They need a decompression. The flywheels are not heavy on a BBC unit and no blade weight. The old engines had the weight off the heavy cast flywheel and blade to counter it hence no decompression.
I first encountered "this page intentionally left blank" in old IBM technical manuals in the 60's. In IBM's case, it was largely so that each chapter or major section of a manual showed up on the right hand side when the manual is laid out flat. In other words, if a chapter had an odd number of pages, they'd add one to make the number even so that the next chapter started on the right side. It certainly made a lot of sense if the manual was intended for three ring binders, and each chapter could be completely separated from any other, and could be detached if wanted. The disclaimer would be so that no-one thought they had a misprinted manual.
I'm a line mechanic at a Honda power equipment dealer. I've personally replaced between 50 and 100 of these. I spent the whole month of February 2024 doing nothing but this. After that much practice, I can do it in an hour and a half.

I have a Honda HS55 snow thrower from 1980. The internal parts and carburetor are the original. When I pull it out of storage in the Fall, it ALWAYS starts on the first or second pull. Good thing because it DOES NOT have electric start!

- Detroit.
@@andrewchristiansen8311 I read that & ended up with coffee and cookie material in my lap
Taryl, thanks for showing us, but homeowners won't be able to do this repair. They don't even to know how to put an air filter in!
I make good side $$$ on homeowners who don't know how to put air filters in and do simple maintenance. Most homeowners don't have common sense either. Most small engine problems are linked to use and abuse of the owner. If they'd use just a little common sense..................js
I saw a bug on ur glove. 😂
I loved my little Honda snow blower back in the 80's!! That thing ran and ran! And boy could it throw snow.

the blank pages at the back of a repair manual is for helpful notes on repair tricks you learned on a specific job you rarely do so you don't have to remember for next time. at least that's what the old mechanic on my first job in a garage in my teens told me to use them for. all of his shop manuals were full of notes about tricks to save time on jobs. we got paid out of the time book, so if you beat the time, you're in the money.

I agree Honda went to crap with the gcv junk but the all plastic camshaft just ended the Honda name 😢😢
That’s because Americans are always chasing the cheapest most inexpensive products. Honda was just giving them what they wanted. Why do you think everything is made in China. Cause Americans like their stuff to be cheap. Inexpensive. It’s your own damn fault
Riding that reputation and name all the way to the bottom. Like so many other once great brands.
What mower should I go with under $1000 these days?

I guess I know what I'm doing in the near future. Thanks for showing us Taryl.
They are OK. Not nearly as good as GX series. Older GC series known for broken rocker arms
What I dont like is undoing the starter nut and that makes the whole ignition coil stud out.
I got a Troy built with the 160 engine no self propelled on it... Ran it for about 10h with the bag of oil and Honda HR synthetic since... I modified the cheap air filter to fit from a previous model... Starts and runs good no problems
Except the way they put the carb assembly on!
GCs and GCVs are not meant to be worked on beyond slapping a carb or a coil on it. Anything internal and you are better off replacing it if it’s on your dime.
you are so right about it being a disposable society. Thats what the government wants. I would rather work on the vintage stuff, they are built so much stronger.
why does the government want this, where are your facts to prove this
@@kb9ndb think about it
It's not the government that wants this, it is WE who wants this.
Makes you wonder why you bother with all that maintenance sometimes!
😂
By that, with clean oil in it,the engine should last 200 years
I have so many engines and parts I got to noticing around 1966 the old two and a half vertical shaft lawn mower engine as I call it move the carburetor to the other side with a long tube they've been that way ever since through the Flathead
.. the older ones I have are carburetor right next to the exhaust like the horizontal shaft engines I guess it was moved for performance and heat dissipation
Using the vacujet carburetor
And for power I still use a flat head around a 1990 I think 6 1/2 horse that's still a good reliable engine for me
That I have picked up free
I don't like the way that engines made either

Exactly. I noticed how filthy that oil was, too, that Taryl drained out. Probably seldom gets changed.
Do you think the "owner" really gives a s**t about maintenance?
I have an 80s Snapper Hi-Vac professional with a Wisconsin Robin engine. Great walk behind. Essentially built to last forever. I wish they still made stuff like that.
If you think Honda lawn mower owners are annoying, you should see the motorcycle owners. Honda went 20+ years without making a decent woods motorcycle or dual sport bike. While others made them well under 250 lbs theirs were stuck at well over 300-350 lbs for 20+ years. "Oh but they're so reliable". Yeah I've had them all. Zero difference other than a ton of weight.
There trail bikes around like 280lbs or so now.

Thanks for the information bud. You can fix anything. Great video as usual.
The plastic gear isn't the problem. Its the METAL mechanism.
No, the problem is Honda got a cheaper supplier that didn’t provide for post plastic casting tolerances and the plastic drags on the mechanism

I have a Toro personal pace that I’ve had for 12 years then I decided to buy a Honda because all the hype about them personally the Toro personal pace is just as good as just as the Honda for half the price.
I have a 2008 Super Recycler with Personal Pace and a Quantum Briggs and have never had any issues with the Personal Pace - still running the original slip belt. The top of the line Hondas use a hydrostatic transmission. Personal Pace is a much simpler system than a hydrostatic transmission.
Thanks buddy. I love these videos. Keep up the fixin👌
Wtf?
What is the best way to get rid of water down gasoline safely? 14:03
Let it settle out for a week or two in see through containers and then gently syphon the gasoline off the top of the water (which will be on the bottom).
Then put this gasoline in your car's fuel tank and use it....
The water can be put in pans outside to evaporate away....
That tube gripper is great for teethpaste to maintain that CoalGate smile.😬
Is it teeff-paste or tooff-paste ????
Depends on how many ya got. 😁@@santaclause2875
I like "Ipana" better
Thanks for the video. Like you said, all of this new stuff is a throw-away
I Don't See any SHAFT in That CAM😵
Im glad to have several old 1958 Briggs and Stratton push mower s i bought some years ago along with 2 industrial lawn boy mowers i keep forever.
they should have spent an extra million dollars on a camshaft that just works!! instead of 10 million in the dumpster
I suppose you support that crook Trump, a complete douche!
I've had a Honda mower for 17 years.
Still mows like new.
I do NOT expect another 17 years...
But, Honda is (was) the best!
It's nice to see someone else use Folger's coffee cans for utility purposes.
my favorite coffee, only coffee that comes in a metal can.

What about Tillotson replacement vertical shaft engines? Are they any better?
Your a southpaw huh? Welcome to the club.
Looks like a four hour job
What did we do before compression relief?
We tugged mightily like a 14 year old schoolboy.......
BTW, the grey honda gasket maker is called "HondaBond"
It work's great, just kinda tricky to apply.
Hondabond, Yamabond, Threebond is all the same stuff. It's what I use, but it's not cheap stuff
@@rozco1978 Sometimes when some people visit me I wouldn't mind if something like "Mouthbond" was expensive but available 😉
That ego you got has no replaceable parts. Nothing but a throw away. PS don't hit anything with the blade, the mower would be trash.
WTF does that have to do with this video 😮
hi
Come on if you can’t pull it over without a compression release then you probably are too weak to even push the mower so it’s a moot point anyways!
it's sad how soft men have become
They put the release in there so it's easier to start for older folks to start em.
@@Guns_N_Gears sad older folks need to but I understand if it's something you enjoy
I am resealing oil sump on old Briggs opposed twin. Do you recommend putting anything on bolts before torque ?
I first encountered "this page intentionally left blank" in old IBM technical manuals in the 60's.
In IBM's case, it was largely so that each chapter or major section of a manual showed up on the right hand side when the manual is laid out flat.
In other words, if a chapter had an odd number of pages, they'd add one to make the number even so that the next chapter started on the right side.
It certainly made a lot of sense if the manual was intended for three ring binders, and each chapter could be completely separated from any other, and could be detached if wanted.
The disclaimer would be so that no-one thought they had a misprinted manual.
