I'm a retired auto mechanic and have watched alot of your vids over the years and this was a very interesting repair. I will save this one under mower repair as this is my retirement hobby. You're the best Taryl!!!
WOW. So cool that Taryl chose my 520h for a video! : ) I have a good working 520h that is my primary mower that has 940 hours on it. I found this other one, non running, with 1600 hours on it and thought it would be good to have as a parts machine. But it was in a lot better condition overall than my original 520h so decided to take it to Taryls to see if he could fix it. He was not too enthusiastic about working on it, for all the reasons he relates in this video, but he agreed to do it. Elkskins found the parts I needed to order on Fleabay and I ordered them. Then after they came in, dropped them off at the shop. Hadn't heard from Taryl since then and was going to call him next week and see if he got anywhere with it and low and behold, I discover it's the subject of todays TFA video! : )
That's a later Onan than what I worked on. They were used on Fairmont motor cars used for track inspecting. Points box easy to work on. Fuel pump mounted right on top easy to work on. Adjustable oil pressure. Carb mounted on top, easy to work on. Very reliable. All that crap packed into that tractor must be a pain to work on. Newer, bigger, better? Not so much. P.S. I have a CCK Onan on my mid '60's Miller welder/generator that still runs great. Easiest carb there is to rebuild. Thanks Taryl. Don't let them bury that Lawn Boy!

@@bwood282I use mine for a backup power generator for my house. I've used it for farm welding and it runs 7018 and 6011 great. Taryl I bought carburetors online for $17.00 verses $104.00 and it comes preadjusted. Only had trouble with one, and they gave me my $17.00 back, and told me to keep it. Also bought ignition kit it came with a plug, wire and electronic control, which were also very cheap and haven't had any problems. Also found a muffler for $24.00 online, OEM Price was $112.00. I got the rider mower for free. Adjusted the valves, which were way out of adjustment. So, it probably cost me no more than $60.00. And watching you do what you do is a big help. I am a retired car and ambulance mechanic. Thank you, Taryl, also those comic skits you do are funny as hell.
Awesome video Taryl. I first learned to work on small engines when my grandfather gave me an old crapsman garden tractor with the 20hp Onan. Clutch bearing went out and quit running. He left the tractor on which fried the ignition. After replacing all ignition parts it was a sweet sweet sound of hearing that old Onan running again. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
I had the same coil failure on a JD 420. I found the Cummins dealer that works on RV generators had what I needed. Not cheap, but they had it and a replacement carburetor " Nickey six" a few years later. The starter issue can be resolved with a JD relay kit. I have had that mower since 96' I probably will never get rid of it.
Thanks! Taryl for this repair tip on Onan P2200g engine for my 95 520 H. Along with the recent valve job I did l took your suggestion and purchased the ignition kit you recomme ded on ebay. Terrific Chapter! Our old Wheel Horse 520 H/Onan with 1,500 hours was still working in 2012 but using a lot of oil while mowing the pasture at full throttle. Got a new Toro Time Cutter with Kawasaki OHV (and vertical shaft) V-Twin, a real work horse. Your video has inspired me to resurrect the old side-valve Toro/Onan still sitting in the shed, a fine garden tractor but as you say, hard to get parts. Thank You Taryl for your great videos, they have soul and they ring true! Did you ever notice what those 5 little holes at the top of the carburetor throat are for? When you turn the key, liquid fuel shoots out of them, giving a rich mixture and the engine starts right up every time. Clever!
Yes, I have used Small Engine Warehouse many times. Great company. Love y'all's videos, you are the reason I started making videos. Thank you all for all the hard work y'all have done over the years.
I had an old Sears from the early 70s with a Onan, the guy used it for decades to mow 5 acres, plow his driveway, plus pull his lawn cart around to mulch his flower bed, pick up limbs etc. The hour clock stopped at 4300 hours a couple years ago, always used castrol oil. I plowed snow for 3 years, it sat a couple years and a guy uses it to mow an acre with it. Never did anything except change plugs, belts and front tires that i know of
I used Taryl’s method of removing flywheels to get the pulley off a slasher gearbox. The pulley has 6 x C section sheaves and would weigh about 20kgs. The shaft is tapered and is 60mm at the top of the taper so it is all fairly big. I used some splitting wedges between the housing and the pulley and hit the end of the pinion shaft, with the thread protected with the nut, with a 10lb sledge hammer. It came off easily. Thanks Taryl, you helped me big time. The machine is not a lawn mower but it still cuts grass about 12ft at a time. Jeff
I've had my H-520 since 1989 and wouldn't think about buy anything else. This junk they are selling at the big box stores and super hardware stores are Chinese junk. Even these new B@S engines are assembled in the US with Chinese parts. I'm glad Taryl showed the new mod on the H-20 Onan. I'll pick one of those kits up for future use. Thanks Taryl for your effort.
I have a JD 318 that had an Onan engine like Taryl's. I had one of the same problems, a valve seat came loose. The engine was tired and the price of parts to rebuild it was too high so I did repower it. Now it has a Honda V-twin and runs great! Totally worth the extra money for the added HP and reliability.
I used one at work for 35 years. I retired, and the mower is still going. No oil to change and magnesium deck that never rusts. The only thing you'll wear out is the wheels.
I sent this to Mustie1 and now you to see if either of you will make a video to show this to others how to accomplish this, just an idea. I see a lot of folks that want the ability to mow with the chute up for various reasons. They use bungies , string or a piece of rope and that to me is so inconvenient. I have never shared this, but I've done this set up on every riding mower I've ever owned and it's fool proof. Use a hook and screw eye's to latch the chute up . Tis uses 1 latching hook, 1 suitable spring and 3 Screw eyes. Attach one screw eye to the side of the rear fender and two screw eyes to the chute. Test the distance of them before drilling to ensure the screw eyes are in the right location. Attach one screw eye on the chute with a spring, and the other end of the spring to the Latch hook, The second screw eye is also attached to the chute just far enough to just give the spring a little tension so the hook can be latched to that second screw eye firmly when chute is being used to keep it secure. Now when you want to open the chute the hook can be latched onto the screw eye mounted to the fender to keep the chute up and out of the way. This method also allows the deck to be raised and lowered when the chute is raised. This setup is on my 1999 Scotts S20hp/48 which still runs and operates fantastic, and my 2018 46" Scrub Cadet XT1. So simple & inexpensive, but absolutely effective. That setup has been on my Scotts since 1999 with the same hardware I originally used including the spring. My Riding mowers are kept clean and in doors when not in use so I hope this helps someone , if not there's always the option of a bungie or a piece of rope. LOL
@Trail-of-dead yeah, but they all sell high or they "just quit, probably something simple," or "probably just needs the carb cleaned." Then there are the running ones that look like they sat outside the last 30 years. I have known several that were more or less the same story as taryl told about his. If I'm going to do groundwork, I use a farm tractor. I want something to mow grass and pick up leaves. I have an f725 John deere, and I like the 345 for what I want...I would really like to find a 300 series hydro wheel horse in good shape.
Kool mod for the lawnmowers with metal hoods , a few self tapping screws and a metal coffee can , screw 🪛 it to the hood , add your favorite beverage and surround with ice and cut away!
My onan is the only onan I've ever seen on a mower. It was on a old weed eater brand mower. I took it off and put it on my hustler 60 zero turn. Great engine. Pain the ass to work on
You are very correct about prices on obsolete equipment. Got a Onan B48M from 1982. Carb is $1057.00. There are guys that restore these. I still use mine regularly.
I have a 416 with the onan. Keep the shroud clear and don't idle them keep that fan spinning. Competitors don't last long enough to have the problems the Onan has.😮
Every time I see or think Onan, I think Wheel Horse and the photos in the catalogs with the vertical blower shrouds showing themselves outside the hood. So glad I have my 1988 JD 260 with Kawasaki FC540V.
Yeah, IMO the blower shrouds facing out looks cool, but creates a problem. When mowing with my 520h, I have to stop every 15 min or so, to brush all the grass clippings and leaves off that grill as it has such strong suction, it clogs up easily, reducing the air intake to keep the engine cool. It's a huge flaw IMO. WH should have made some sort of L shaped cover to put over it so it sucks air from the top of the hood.
I have that exact same tractor with the same engine and runs great ours has that tiller on the back and is the best thing for the garden love to find a mower deck blade and blower for it some day
You can't learn in books what you get from years of experiance. This is true in most industries. It is a shame that they take to the older people and put them out. They should be the ones offering their years of experiance to the younger people. Keep up the good work.
Did that on a couple of small case skid steers. On a different note I love the Milwaukee fuel tools. I have that same ratchet, their die grinder, 3/8 impact and their 1/2 inch impact. Same as snap on for half the price.
I never thought Onan was a good motor. I have seen a lot of issues with them myself on bucket trucks and enclosed trailers that used them for power. Even when new, there were issues due to weather or mechanical/electrical problems that even repair shops couldn't fix for any extended length of time. Great video though as always!!!!
On the really old tractors with self-contained magnetos, people actually recharge the magnets using a big electromagnet. Maybe newer magnets in flywheels aren't subject to loss of power?
yup i have 1975 case 446 it had Onen 2 cyl and used in winter as well had motor all tuned up in fall and in winter 1 cylinder would fade in and out, i couldnt trust it the next year i repowered it with a Krowler!! best move i made
Put another engine on that Lawn Boy. I have a nice old all - aluminum Craftsman mower from early 70s my dad bought new and I have been beating it to death ever since. I lost count of how many different engines I have had on the housing. It's nice and light and has quick change wheel adjustments.
I had a not-dissimilar experience with my 318. Just one thing after another. They were really neat little tractors. Last time I got it all fixed, I gave it a cosmetic restoration and sold it. It was a nice showpiece, but I don't think it would ever be a serviceable tractor again.
I dun my 89 Wheelhorse 312-8 with a Kohler Magnum all year & LOVE it!!! Keep up the awesome work keeping the good equipment going!!! This new stuff, not for me
I know it’s a small thing, but sometimes it’s the small details that will bite you in the butt later on. At 27:36 the lock washer was already on the negative coil terminal when Taryl mounted the ring connector on the terminal - instead of mounting the lock washer on top of the connector. I can see that vibrating off eventually, causing another issue. Just saying - they’re there for a reason. 🔧👍
Taryl.... G.M. Delco coils on D.I.S. engines fire simultaneously just as these Onan coils fire. For 19.99 and a couple spade connections you can have a durable coil.
I am getting ready to overhaul an onan, it is a lot older than that one, it’s on an old Lincoln welder, points ignition and no starter, it powers the generator to start the engine. Oddly also getting ready to get into an old wheel horse tractor but it has a single cylinder kohler. I have actually considered repowering them both with harbor freight v twins
Who else was saying put a rag in that carburetor please? Thanks for the info in the knowledge I've learned so much from your videos thank you Taryl and the crew.
Just one thought about replacing the Magnet Ring. Newer magnets are made from Neodymium which has a stronger magnetic flux than was available 40 years ago. So that might be why they are better.
Nothing else makes torque like an Onan twin though.. The repower kits are great for ease of swapping and modern reliability but they don't make near as much torque, at least compared to the old CCKB Onans. The older Onans were very under-rated in HP and TQ.
@@calholli But look how large you have to go to match the torque of the old 19.5hp Onan. You have to go to a modern big block. None of it is cheap though. I got a quote to rebuild my Onan CCKB about 3 years ago from Cummins. They said it would start out at $3000 and go up from there if it needed crank work. I bought two NOS Onan shortblocks on Fleabay for $500 each instead.
@@rangeraficionado87 That Onan CCKB looks like it's just an opposed twin. I have a two Brings opposed twin engines that I need to rebuild. Rings are stuck in one and the other broke both rods.. Somehow it didn't hurt anything else, so I bought two used rods on fleebay and I'm going to slap it all back together, new rings in both engines. (18hp I believe -- some of these were 20hp)................ I never knew Onan was related to Cummins
@@calholli I used to like the Briggs oppsed twins until I ruined two different ones by mowing a very shallow side-hill for about 100ft. Both engines started smoking very badly afterwards. They were very nice runners up until then.. The Onan's are MUCH heavier built than the Briggs or even the Kohlers. They're built like diesel engines really. Everything is oversized on them. Cummins bought Onan years ago.
Sounds like Onan engines age just like humans! The older they get, the more things go wrong. Eventually they cost you a fortune to fix, and replacement parts are hard to get...🙂
You guys are a gas! To think my comment may influence on creative. Your team is a Joy and always educational. There's dinner. I own a 1996 Craftsman riding mower. ha
Yea the jd's r a bit more of a pain , but their not bad to do on these wh's , if ur poor or just cheap like I am , u can also use a gm HEI ignition module, best to order a high performance one , accel or something, these ones have built in dwell timing for a better rpm range , u can use a used abs sensor out of a gm abs style wheel bearing which r small enough u can drill the original pickup coil and they will sit right in where the original was can use the same reluctor wheel and wahhhlllaaa !!! A brand new slightly used , much more reliable electronic ignition for your Onan.... For about 25$
I agree I’m not a fan of the newer Onans like the P series, but the old CCK cast iron Onan flat twins are some of my favorite engines ever. They actually have a stroke that measure longer than the bore diameter, something very rare these days in small engines. While that means they don’t like to rev much past the 3600 RPM factory rated speed they make excellent torque and it’s hard to find any attachment used in any conditions that’ll make one lug down. They had the points and condenser ignition so no worries about trigger modules burning up and the standard 12V “beer can” coil for them is cheap and easy to get. Then seeing old lawn-boy with the capstan drive self propel was cool , they’re some of the toughest mowers out there, IMO the F engine lawn boys with the later model 3 speed belt drive self-propel are the best mowers ever made. OMC sure knew how to make 2 strokes.
Awesome an onan! Not alot of videos on onans ive got a. 416h i that has spark issues i think ill try this definitely if they have this kit for it! Thanks Taryl!
Reminds me of the time i had to remove the engine to replace the starter on my lamdlords homda ht3813 mower. It was a pain to remove the drive shaft to be able to get the engine out and hard to remove the flywheel nut cause i didn't have the right tools at the time but still managed to get it done
That Onan sounds cool - a little different from that of a Briggs V Twin. I mowed with an old Montgomery Ward flat twin that my first lawn care customer had, and it sounded like the Onan did. Not sure now who made the engine for that tractor.
Kohler & Briggs also made flat twins, I wish they'd ALL make them again...AND that Cummins/Onan would get their prices back to reality. I've an AEAD-200LE Miller with the Onan BM43/GAO16. I installed a 'too quiet' HD discard muffler to the.side. 😁Sounds so nice
I hope someday the hope mechanics can reproduce parts at home .. I've gotten pretty ok in cad and 3d printing, next is aluminum sand casting, heads could be want to cast list :)
It's interesting to me that no one is forwarding the idea of using wax instead of filament in 3D printers. Seems a natural choice for those who want to use it for casting. I've heard of some making the pattern with regular filament, but idk how good an idea using plastic is.

Love mine. I also have a B43m in my 77' 446. Does yours have an oil filter? I must have the only one without one lol.
No oil filter on mine. I think about 83/84/85 engines changed and had the oil filter.
Thanks for your comment. 👋👋👍🏻👍🏻
Those old 2 cycle lawn boys were the best towers ever built i wished they still made them
I used one at work for 35 years. I retired, and the mower is still going. No oil to change and magnesium deck that never rusts. The only thing you'll wear out is the wheels.
If you are mowing up and down Hills and Ditch Banks, you must a a 2 Stroke...
Those old Lawn Boys are collectors items.
I love my old 2 stroke Lawn-Boys. Beast of a mower and lasts forever, literally
LOL
You have some serious patience man. The only Onan stuff that I've ever seen has been on the RV generators.
We love your content and learn so much while having fun. There's my dinner! Gotta go...
Automotive guy from Michigan, made sure the parts are to spec, good stuff
love this ch been here from the start !!! leak master plumbing
I've wanted a john deere 318 since i was a kid. You have sealed the doom on that dream!
It’s the best garden tractor ever made, mine has 2500hrs on it starts every time doesn’t leak or burn a drop of oil
Your videos always help😊. Thanks for sharing this information with us .
Excellent. I believe I can get my P216 going now. Thanks you.
I learned a lot by watching your videos. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing the adventure ! Ity always something, especially old Onans ....
Over 40 years ago in central Africa,I got an ancient onan genset to run. It had the special coil. Used two separate coils and the point contraption,
I have that exact same tractor with the same engine and runs great ours has that tiller on the back and is the best thing for the garden love to find a mower deck blade and blower for it some day
Nice work Taryl! A belated Happy Birthday to Slippers!
Thanks Taryl I had welded with a Onan engine on it, made by Studebaker motors it was fun too.
Thanks Taryl, another great video. Learn something new every time you post! Good stuff. Never ever thought a permanent magnet would go bad.
On the really old tractors with self-contained magnetos, people actually recharge the magnets using a big electromagnet. Maybe newer magnets in flywheels aren't subject to loss of power?
Always love to see the skits.
Thank you Taryl for telling us about your war stories with the Onan engines
You got lucky with that self tapping screw. It almost pierced the wire bundle when you ran it through to make the hole.
yup i have 1975 case 446 it had Onen 2 cyl and used in winter as well had motor all tuned up in fall and in winter 1 cylinder would fade in and out, i couldnt trust it the next year i repowered it with a Krowler!! best move i made
Put another engine on that Lawn Boy.
I wish I saw this 2 months ago. I sold my 520h becasue of no spark. Great video
I’m kinda missing my ole trusted friend “Ronnie”. The way he used to sail over the fence. A true athlete.
Very funny Taryl.... One of your best!!!!!!!
Hi Taryl
I am a ret boat mech. Hack. carb spray try WD 40 it really does work and low comp it will also boost. .
I really like your vids and stories.😊
I didn't know there were issues with Onans. Always wanted one!
I dun my 89 Wheelhorse 312-8 with a Kohler Magnum all year & LOVE it!!! Keep up the awesome work keeping the good equipment going!!! This new stuff, not for me
Great skit and great vlog on that repair…👍👍👍
Thank you for sharing.👍
40:42 - Taryl’s Red Bull moment 😄
I know it’s a small thing, but sometimes it’s the small details that will bite you in the butt later on. At 27:36 the lock washer was already on the negative coil terminal when Taryl mounted the ring connector on the terminal - instead of mounting the lock washer on top of the connector. I can see that vibrating off eventually, causing another issue. Just saying - they’re there for a reason. 🔧👍
I noticed that also. And throwing tools around he's getting sloppy like he's in a hurry to get it over with not like he use to be in earlier videos
@@Tankdogentertainment
We all get older and that’s what happens.
Taryl.... G.M. Delco coils on D.I.S. engines fire simultaneously just as these Onan coils fire. For 19.99 and a couple spade connections you can have a durable coil.
I have been reading on lawn tractor pulling sites about guys using GM HEI modules to trigger a coil. It might be worth trying.
Do you have any website links to read more about this?
WE LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS!!!
Yep! My P model Onan's electronic ign went bad too. Replaced it and it fired right up.
Always wondered what used a 9/32nd nut bolt thanks Be blessed
Always enjoy watching your channel
So many things you can learn from a video like this...
Great video! Awesome info! i Love watching your videos! :)
Happy birthday Slippers!!
I like Taryl's old USA made Craftsman wrenches that you can't buy anymore. I used to have a big set of those that got stolen, HEY wait a second!
Thanks again for help Tuesday with the obsolete mower blade and sticker
Who else was saying put a rag in that carburetor please? Thanks for the info in the knowledge I've learned so much from your videos thank you Taryl and the crew.
I have the exact same engine that runs pretty good. Now i know what to do if i ever have a ignition problem! Thanks
Definitely a throwback. Not bad.
The long stroke Kohler Command (27hp I believe) should have good torque. They aren't cheap though.
Agree can't match the powerband, smoothness and quality of A Onan twin.
Eventually they cost you a fortune to fix, and replacement parts are hard to get...🙂
Yeah, especially those 'reproductive' parts that seem to stop working when we hit 80 years old......
You guys are a gas! To think my comment may influence on creative. Your team is a Joy and always educational. There's dinner. I own a 1996 Craftsman riding mower. ha
A few years ago, I found Onan parts at RV dealers . They dealt with alot of generators. Still expensive!
I’ve also got a JD 318 with a crank, no start condition. I’ve done all the testing and found it’s the ignition module. It’s a real pain to do.
Thank s for your videos!!!
Onan's, Vangaurd's and Kawasaki's are the 3 best twin cylinders ever made.
That blower shroud cover gave you a tuff time. It was the coil from a different boil that didn't give a spark . So its back to the ball game.
This video was really informative. I enjoyed it. I think Cummins now owns Onan.
What a PITA that engine is to work on it looks like.
