    I just found your channel a few days ago.
    I absolutely love it and I'm rapidly working my way through your library.
    I'm recommending to all my friends
    that would have an interest.
    I have mad respect for people of faith
    that are capable of nuanced thinking.
    I'm trying to undertake writing a book
    and am working on the outline right now.
    I believe I've stumbled into some explosive
    insights, and I feel it's a subject of enough weight that it would be a shameful dereliction not to do it justice...
    I have a rapidly ballooning
    TO READ book list.
    These videos are an incredibly
    valuable resource.

    Hello, I was wonderign if you guys have thought about doing a video on Cherubims parallel in the ANE and Bible. Or on first temple archeological similarities to other elements of temples in the ANE. I would love to see you guys making a video about those subjects!!!

      We have a video on Supernatural Beings of the Bible that would be a good place to start: th-cam.com/video/S0SiGmUaeOw/w-d-xo.html. We’ll put a video on cherubim on our list of ideas and see if that fits with what we’re doing in the future. Thanks!

    Great video, as always. I also read in Heiser's The Unsseen Realm that "total destruction" was probably aimed at the last vestiges of the giants, who needed to be eliminated completely.

    Awesome video! I love your guys’ work.
    While I don’t know the original proposal, I have heard the proposal that herem is a form of sacrafice with it being covered in KL Noll’s paper “Canaanite Religion” I’m not for sure if this idea is correct but it is intriguing.
    I actually covered it a little bit in my video on Canaanite religion, but I made the footnote that it’s one of the possible views of herem, and that there are other scholarly ideas out there.

    After Netanyahu referenced “Amalek” to justify Israel’s genocide in Gaza, we ABSOLUTELY need to discuss and address this concept. That reference, together with everything that Israel has done to the Palestinians since, is a painfully clear indication that we’re seeing herem being applied as GENOCIDE in real-time.

    Your channel is amazing and is a hidden jem I pray God will give more recognition to. Thank you sincerely for all your hard work! I wanted to ask a heartfelt question that has been on my mind. Many (if not most) scholars think that the concept of a "messiah" was not original to Judaism, but was borrowed from Persian thought-Zorastrianism- during the exile. In your opinion, how much credence do you give to that idea? Is Zorastrian literature a worthwhile thing to examine for cross-comparison with the Bible?

    • @BeneaththeBible
      @BeneaththeBible  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much for your kind words, they're a real encouragement! In regards to Zoroastrian influence on Judaism and Jewish thought I have to be honest and say that's not something I'm particularly familiar with. I'm sure there is a large literature that explores various ideas but I am simply not well read on it. With that said I will note that one factor in this discussion is when one believes various passages were written. The concept of the Messiah is certainly throughout the Hebrew Bible but if you prefer to see the Hebrew Bible as a composition of - or very heavily edited during - the Persian period you may be more inclined to see Zoroastrian influence where as if you understand large elements of the Hebrew Bible as having pre-exilic origin you may be disinclined to see as much influence. Personally, I suspect that there was an amount of borrowing of certain Zoroastrian concepts into preexisting Jewish thought as the Jewish communities lived under Persian rule, but I have questions to the degree of that borrowing and to what extent those pre-existing ideas in Jewish thought were modified by borrowed ideas. I don't know if that just muddies the water further or not but I am just not sure on a number of these questions as it's far outside my area of expertise! This is definitely a topic I hope we can explore in greater depth in the future,

      @@BeneaththeBible Thank you for responding to my comment! No, no fields of expertise are narrow, I don't expect you to be especially knowledgeable on everything. Yes, I agree that depending on how much one believes the bible as we have it now is pre or post exillic, would partially influence those judgments. I will search more in-depth about the topic sometime in the future.

    It's a moot point, but Finkelstein has argued the context of all this is the reign of Josiah. Josiah wants to take advantage of the Assyrian withdrawal from the former Northern Kingdom c650??

    • @BeneaththeBible
      @BeneaththeBible  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! This is something we didn't really have the time to get into. But there is much to be said for a "Double Redaction" of the DtrH with a kind of first edition finishing during the reign of Josiah and a second after the exile. Even reading Joshua as a kind of literary Josiah in that Joshua's exploits are posed as a historical precursor to Josiah's then-current-day geo-political ambitions. Though there are also very good works suggesting parts of Joshua have some older elements. There is a lot of very good work on this and we just couldn't cover it all. But even if the concept of herem was particularly useful in the 7th century in Judah following the Assyrian conquest of Israel we think there is a strong case that the concept was not a 7th century innovation and goes back much earlier - even in Judah/Israel. Josiah expanding Judah's border may well have been conceived in terms of herem and the establishing of a people in a new land. Thanks for your comment!
