  • Join us as we unravel the enigma of Sodom, the infamous Biblical city. Could Tall el Hammam, a remarkable archaeological site in modern-day Jordan, truly be the long-lost Sodom, destroyed by divine fire and brimstone?
In this episode we delve deep into the ancient texts, the geography of the Holy Land, and the compelling archaeological discoveries at Tall el Hammam. We explore the arguments for and against the identification of this site as Sodom and weigh the broader implications for our understanding of biblical history.
We'll take a critical look at the evidence, alternative theories, and the challenges it presents to traditional interpretations. Let's dig in.

Another great video! I love the honesty and integrity you guys have and I love the multiple angles/interpretations you always present. Even now as an exChristian I can't get enough of Biblical study.
A Southern location of Sodom seems to make more sense to me but I do lean more toward an etiological approach to much of Genesis. Many, if not all of Israel's enemies were depicted as coming from evil people who were possible homosexuals or sleeping with their mothers, rapists, incestuous, etc. The mythical flood has Ham's genealogy being cursed listing evil cities and the enemies of Israel like Nimrod, cities of Babel and Nineveh, Egypt, the Philistines, Jebusites, Amorites, and the Girgishites, to name a few. Lot's genealogy gives us the Moabites and the Ammonites. I think these stories are myth and propaganda as the theology of Yahwism evolved to be more monotheistic.
But I am reading an interesting book right now by Dr. Robert R. Cargill who makes the argument that Malki-Sedeq (Melchizedek) was originally written as the king of Sodom in Genesis 14. He argues that later redactors changed סְדֹם (Sodom) to שָׁלֵם (Shalem) after Sodom became viewed as inhospitable and sinful. Redactors tried to separate Abraham from the El Elyon and possible Sedeq worshipper Melchizedek once Sodom became a bad name.
Whether or not Sodom or Melchizedek actually existed these mythical and legendary stories were very much apart of the Ancient Near East culture and their mytho-history.

The messiah, son of David is a descendant of a Moabite woman, plus there are plenty of stories in the Bible about the israelites themselves that are as much horrifying.
Judah and tamar, brothers of Joseph, David and huria wife's, etc.

Sodom hasn't become a byword for sin but a specific sin.

Read Ezekiel and you’ll see that that worldview is erroneous… gluttony, pride and selfishness…

    Great job, love your
    presentation 👏
Professor Kenneth Kitchen dates Joseph from around 1750 to 1650 at the very latest.
If one takes the text literally then Joseph is riding in a chariot and horses are introduced into Egypt during the Hyksos period.
If we take the patriarch narrative literal then Abraham maybe in a time period close to the Bene Hassan tombs. In which the fresco has no indication of horses.. of course this is only a hypothesis and speculation.

Why? you can't say because you don't have a reason other than, "ABR wants me to think this is it."
