"Is Saul Also Among the Prophets?": Ecstatic Prophecy and 1 Samuel 19

  • In this video, we explore the fascinating story of David's escape to Samuel and Saul being overcome by a bout of ecstatic prophecy in 1 Samuel 19. This story is part of both David's rise but also as an explanation for the apparent Israelite phrase "Is Saul Also Among the Prophets?" We'll look at what the Bible can show us about the institution of prophecy and prophetic training as well as this idea of ecstatic prophecy and prophecy's role as divination. We'll go beyond the Bible and look at sources from Ugarit, Mari, Assyria and Ancient Egypt to see what they can tell us about ecstatic prophecy in the ancient world. Let's dig in.
