    Iain Tyrell is just a master orchestra conductor. Seeing him fine tune each cylinder is like seeing a conductor rehearsing a symphony and pointing at each instrument that didn’t quite play in sync. So pleasing to see a man mastering his art to such a degree ! Thinking back of the moment when he arrived with just his screwdriver and pipe, who would think he would have achieved such an improvement ! Huge respect to him !!

Obviously Iain is on another level, but it does show that while many mechanics can turn wrenches and replace parts, it's a whole other skill to be able to properly diagnose and tune an engine. It's always a privilege to watch someone with Iain's skills work. I hope he has many apprentices to pass his experience to before he retires one day.

    I thought I was unique in luck that continually trips you up...even I was expecting things to be all ok after Ian did mixture and balance.. can u borrow a set of suitable carbs, known to be good, for further elimination purposes? - Is the tank badly rusted / full of debris that is getting past filter somehow? - Is filter now showing new debris?
    Monitor / replace Coil + Amp power feeds and earths - If no affect, Perhaps there is a piece of simple test gear available that clips on to all eight plug leads and feeds 'Scope traces into a laptop App, recording all data during test drive - Sync the traces (timebase) and they should lay ontop of each other perfectly - any exceptions will stand out clearly and can then be traced back to individual leads which will certainly narrow fault location :)

    As for the misfire, check connections in the ignition system for any corrosion or dry solder on boards, I've cured a few cars with poor connections. Tedious work but have patience and be methodical, also look for any electrical parts that have been replaced or even worked on as that can give you the clue you need. 1979s electrics are a nightmare on any car.

    Having had a carburated Italian car back in the day (Fiat 124), I know how "touchy" those carburetor adjustments can be. I had a problem where my engine would start running very rough after a while, and it turned out to be the idling screw that kept unscrewing itself slightly by the vibrations! Also, the accelerator pump was sticking sometimes. Carburetors are very finicky devices. Iain is certainly a very experienced mechanic with these things, Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. P.S. I could hear that your voice was also "misfiring' near the end of the video. I hope that you didn't get a sore throat?

    • @littlepippin8445
      @littlepippin8445 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Accelerator pump has been the source of all by VW bug misery for months. Had no idea the adjustment had slipped to minimum as it is visually obscured by the alternator. It is what caused all the flat spots and rough running when pulling away, so I spent hours adjusting the mixture and the air bypass (idle) screws to try and compensate !! Does the Ferrari have accelerator pumps?

    Cor it’s been so many years since I had to adjust the balance on a carb and fiddle with the idle speed. It brought back lots of memories of ongoing frustration but also that HUGE hit of dopamine when it went right and improved performance. Keep going - loving seeing how this develops. Thanks for another great video.

    Well, that made things crispier and more lively, I have been wondering about the idle mixtures and balance.....I think you did well to get as far as you did, doing the Iain Tyrell trick takes many many years of experience, listening, knowing what you're listening to, and not to mention, you have to be doing it regularly to keep you ear tuned........I could tell the difference it made straight away, it suddenly became very perky!!
    I love thios series, and once its sorted I'm going to be very sad about it in some ways, its been a hell of a journey for you!! This collaboration was awesome, I really enjoyed it, and it would be good to see another meet with Iain to wrap up the series!!

    Watching Iain listening to the carbs with the rubber tube brings back memories of my 1958 MGA with twin SU carbs that were balanced by listening to them through a tube the same way.

    Incredible how Ian tunes the carbs by ear. I used to have a 6 cylinder bike that had 6 carbs, I used a set of carb balancing vacuum guages to balance them, it was always very fiddly and adjusting one would have an impact on the others, so getting them all balanced was always a challenge.🤔

    Two things spring to mind. Modern spark plugs do not take kidly to fauling up. Get new and start driving at once, no standing idling etc. Plus maybe you need to adjust the accpumps on the carbs, if they give too much fuel too early then it reacts like that. I am happy that Iain took up the fact that idle screws do a lot for the cars drivability not just the idle. You are very close to finding the solution now. Good luck!-)

    getting close - i recon theres some s**t floating about in one of the idle jets - every now + again blocking it. chased my tail on a pinto 38 DGAS setup, eventually bought 2 idle jets + it was fixed. i never saw anything in the jets to cause the problem, but something was wrong with at least one of them. unfortunately u need 8... oh well, its only money....

    I really enjoy watching your videos as a classic car enthusiast. I'm sure with perseverance you'll get it running 100%. Some advise I can give that I haven't seen in your videos. It may be worth checking the accelerator pumps. Each carburetor will have one and if working correctly will produce a good jet of petrol from each choke. If not, the rubber diaphragm may be perished. A good way to check is by looking into each carb with the choke valve open. Then open the throttle wide. You should see petrol squirting in. You could also try using Gunson Colortune. Basically a glass spark plug that comes in different thread sizes. It lets you see the combustion inside the cylinder and the colour indicates the performance of the mixture. Its available on Ebay and Amazon. It may be another way of identifying the troublesome cylinder(s).

    Great Video - enjoyed very much. As for the misfiring - pretty sure the carbs are fixed. But there is fuel supply and - most important - ignition to check. Did you check if misfiring is temperature dependent? Could be OT sensors, cables and coils. Or even distributor cabs. OT sensors most likely if occuring ar low revs at warmed up engine. Just a thought. And - grounding the Digiplexes is essential. Thanks for keeping us never bored just by providing you vids!
