We would love to do more of this kind of content so if you would like more, sound off in the comments!

Our local gaming group is playing a late 3rd Edition campaign so we're using the trial assault and vehicle rules (non fast vehicles tended to feel a bit stationary without that). We got tired for 9th edition restricting what wargear we could take on characters etc. In 3rd we've got rules for Tau and Necrons and if a vehicle or big tyranid is missing we have the custom creation rules for them as a starting point to tweak. Hell we've got rules for Kroot, Armoured Companies, Feral Orks and the Lost and the Damned beyond the basic stuff.

I still play Oldhammer. If you like new units simply make up rules for them to fit in. It´s your game and your hobby.

Loved 2nd 40k and 4th/5th WFB, Epic Spacemarine was great and also Warhammer Quest. The games have lost all their soul. Although I am back for Old World and I'm seriously looking at Epic Imperialis

2 mins in and my heads about to fall off from all of the nodding! 😅 you guys aren’t pulling punches with your opinions/words. It’s like a breath of fresh air on a humid day! This is a topic that deserves to be explored more and you two are doing it justice. Looking forward to listening to the rest of this! Personally I don’t play anything later than 7th/HH.
Edit: around 5:00 “the further they move away from RP and AC’s original work, the less of a clue they have what they’re doing” absolutely spot on lads. Perfectly said.

For me the ideal game is somewhere in between modern and older versions. But... on the flip side current 40k has more players than ever before. Nothing lasts forever just got to enjoy what we have and embrace the evolution. I dont like the way game changes personally but there isnt enough of a community for old hammer to stay with it. I particularly don't enjoy the steady decrease in roster customization options.

I played back in 2nd edition and enjoyed that, came back in 9th, which seemed kinda bloated.
10th I think is a mixed bag - like I think the datasheet layouts/index cards are great and one thing I think is particularly good is putting the weapon profiles on the individual cards - so a guardsman's power fist can be less effective than say a space marine captain's one. Where it really fell down for me was the lack of options, and I think the design choice to make all wargear points-agnostic was a mistake. Like they want to make points their primary form of balance adjustment, but then they removed points.

You're gonna love the 'How we would fix 40k' vid i'm editing atm. I loved Second. So many fond memories. I do like the cards, i think i mentioned that on our likes and hates for 10th vid.

40K has never been a well-balanced game, very little from GW's release catalogue has been well-balanced. Back in the 'old' days certain armies dominated, and the term "codex creep" has existed from well into the 90s. The biggest difference between then and now is that we have vastly higher expectations, the war gaming community has seen other gaming options and the 'competitive scene' has become larger and more closely monitored and reported upon. The result is that the current GW rules are compared to a much higher bar, the 'old' GW is looked at fondly by grumpy old grognards who were over-awed young people who had very little to compare it to, these folks are not older, more experienced, and have seen myriad other options (either in house rules or alternative rules systems) - for example the 'designed Carnifex' was horribly open to rules abuse and the huge 'cost' was negated by the dominance of these monsters on the field, it was not balanced. We are fondly remembering the olden days of our play as the best ever because we were at that time not cynical and demanding of better. I can agree that GW has gutted characteristics of armies in later periods, but to say that old 40K was better is a rose-coloured glasses look of rules that were poorly designed and balanced from the outset.

Lies. All I’m hearing is balanced and informed opinions. By your all caps, passive aggressive response its obvious that *you’re* the one getting emotional. Projection/narcissism is a helluva drug 😅
I bet you started playing around 8th, have at least one all-primaris army and think that warhammer is competitive…

The way the rules are written is HORRENDOUS in 10th. So many unnecessary words. Just get to the point! Honestly it breaks my brain sometimes trying to decipher what they're trying to say. I ended up re-writing my own little cheat sheet for Strategems and special rules, much simpler. But regardless, viva la 2nd ed!
