- Well here we go, a mighty 2 hours looking at the origins of Rogue Trader
Well, after the 30 minutes of blithering about Heavy Metal and GW.
This took forever to edit and put together and I've heard it about 20 times now. The fact I was still finding it enjoyable is hopefully a good sign.

Still have my original 1st ed hardback and still play it from time to time. No supplements or codices, just straight out of the book. If you want a small-scale skirmish game with a bit of depth its still a banger. Meaningful gear choices in a 40K game? Who would have thought it.
The rules for robots with the logic trees first appeared in White Dwarf. They required a bit of prep but they were a lot of fun. We used to play our own 40K themed versions of Robot Wars back in the day. It was a ballache to incorporate them into a standard game alongside other units, but on their own they were great.
You're right when you say it works more like a framework than an actual game. I would say its a 40K themed skirmish version of GURPS. It can be clunky as hell, but if you're playing alongside people who are well versed in the rules its nowhere near as bad as people make out.
I think that's the main thing isnt it? Likeminded people and you just play the framework and go from there.
Bought the hardback copy they sell in Warhammer world and I'm still yet to convince my mates to try it, considering we started playing 40k in 5th when I was 10
Ah, you guys got to experience peak 40k (in my opinion) then which was 6/7th. Once we played enough to know the bulk of the rules by memory it provided the best combo of depth & speed for gaming. Wasn't perfect; Formations were OP marketing bullshit & some codex Detachments needed tighter rules (my Tau, I'm looking at you) but it was a better ruleset than anything that followed. Twenty years of refinement went into 6E, 7E was a half-time rush-job (6E was about for 2 years, not the usual 4 to that point) and lacked some rules but improved on others.
Good luck with RT - it's the same...but very different. lol
Like Matt says very different but go for it! Do a character and 5 dudes each and go from there. So much customisation potential!
Rat snakes are worse at feeding time, being frenzied feeders there is nothing worse than 2 snakes going for 1 rat and having to stop them from trying to swallow each other.
