Yandere Dev, also known as Alex Mahan, is a cautionary tale that any man may befall the fate of Chris Chan, should they not learn from his mistakes. A masterclass in how not to handle internet fame, Yandere Dev rose to promience after striking IP gold with his indie game "Yandere Simulator". Yandere Sim is a hitman-style stealth assassination game where you play as a Yandere, a Japanese Anime trope describing a character with an unhealthy lust for their love interest, or 'senpai'. You may very well have heard about Yandere Dev from fantastic TH-camrs like The Right Opinion or Kappa Kaiju, but in this video, we take a birds-eye view of his history online, so that we might learn how NOT to interact with trolls, fans, or otherwise, featuring none other than the enigmatic Justin Whang.

It took years to add a rival in Yandere Sim.
In that amount of time:
- Undertale became a huge hit to the point it ended up represented in Smash Bros. Made by 1 man.
- FNAF has had multiple games. Each one trying to push greater heights, and with huge graphical differences.
- Cuphead, a visual achievement of a game with great difficulty, has become a staple and also got into Smash Bros.
Bro even the Henry Stickmin franchise was more successful than this shit. A fucking stickman game was better and more endearing than anything this incel would ever make.

Stardew Valley came out in 2016, the guy did EVERYTHING alone, every sprite, every music, every goddam character with different personalities, and now he's making another game, 7 years after Stardew, Concerned Ape did what Alex couldn't in little time, even ported his game to several platforms, that includes consoles like the Nintendo switch. I wanna see Alex get that under his belt
If he hired a team or made the storyline and then let the team disign the game-play etc....etc .... It would be finnished much sooner but he also does everything himself. Several people are too proud to let anyone touch their creation, but Yandev has done much more the past 1.5 year.

Yandere Dev is the gold standard example of precisely why devlopers and publishers hire someone to do their PR. It puts an extra step in between them and the customer base to prevent them from saying and doing stupid shit.
Same thing with Sean Murray at Hello Games. Tried to do PR and interviews for No Mans Sky and it didn't go well for him. Only difference he released a game and worked to make it better after launch.
I need to apologize to everyone as one of the people who encouraged YandereDev on 4chan to pursue this project. The premise sounded nice and the dev appeared to be eager and honest so I didn't think much of it. If I knew the outcome at that time, I would have trashed him into the garbage can and saged the thread.
It really wasn’t your fault or anyone else’s but his tbh. It’s the intention that matters, yours was good. Who knows, maybe if multiverse really exist then one of them might have a complete version of this ass-forsaken project.

Some people are despite their aspirations and wishes, simply meant to do nothing with their life beyond the bare minimum. These are the same kind of people who work 9 to 5's, and simply do nothing else with their time, only to complain about how they don't have 'this,' or 'that.' Granted, even these sort of people put in more effort than yandev does.

Dude, it's 4chan. I was also in that thread. I did not expect anything to come out of it whatsoever, similar to Pressure, BroQuest and other similar ideas. The biggest joke about /v/ was that, despite being the vidya board, many other boards completed game projects (Embric of Wulfhammer, Chapter Master) while /v/ stumbled trying to get concepts off the ground (and Katawa Shoujo was mostly an /a/ project).
Scott cawthon made like 10 fnaf games and built a whole franchise before Alex even finished a kickstarter demo

As lazy and incompetent as he is, that's not a fair comparison. The Five Nights at Freddy is pretty simplistic series in concept and (particularly in the earlier titles) execution. That's not to say Scott isn't anything to scoff though, especially in comparison to Yandere Dev, with his great community awareness/support and how each of his games improved over the last.

After 48 years in development, Yandev releases the final rival and finished development on Yandere Simulator.

Yandev quits development on the game and went to therapy. After that, he began working in a game studio and started a family.
ALTERNATE ENDING:
Yandev cooperated with the TinyBuild programmer by fixing his messy code and the game was released in 2021.
WEEB ENDING:
Yandev quits development so he can marry his sex doll and continue life as a degenerate.
OBSCURITY ENDING:
A Yansim clone surpasses Yandere Simulator in terms of speed, polish, and reputation, and obscuring the original game.

Boy do I have news for you two years later
In a parallel universe, yanderedev cleaned up his act after his encounter with mike and took it as a lesson on how to become both a better coder and a better person overall. Then when interest in his game peaked, he was able to handle it and not let it get to his head by pulling a Sean Murray and just sitting down and coding the game, regardless of what other people thought of him. He would go on to release the full game in early 2016 to much fanfare and continue to have the community’s support for several years, and later would use his new funds to start his own indie game studio where he found his life’s purpose and love in the process of making new games. Eventually he would look back on his younger self and realize how troubled he was with his insecurities, and put forward considerable support for the advocation and financing of public mental health programs, especially those aimed at kids and young adults. But no, instead we got this universe.

Assuming what he wrote in that post was completely true, Mike was kind of a dick. That part just threw me off. Feedback and criticism is important, but damn, that was bizarrely harsh.

IIRC, Apeis eventually admitted that most of the assets were recycled from his previous attempt at making a rival Yandere Simulator game. It's poetic YandereDev was inspired by Mike Z...who also faced troubled development in his games. Including firing all employees from his company after he was accused of abuse, then shutting down the company a few months later. Then getting fired from Guilty Gear for said abuse allegations.
To be fair, allegations are not proof or conviction. I could allege anything about anyone at anytime.

Someone could be recorded driving a truck through a building, but until they're convicted allegedly has to be used.
I know allegations can be false, I still see people claim Gary Oldman was abusive to his ex wife despite those incidents being confirmed false in court decades ago. And I don't tend to jump down accusations quickly.
But with Mike Z, I didn't say the allegations were true, I'm more focusing on the audacity of firing everyone else. Because both him and YandereDev seem to think they can do everything alone on their respective projects, and boy has that been working out.

Enough to rival Chris Chan!! But in this case, everyone hates the main character universal with no chance sympathy for them.
It sounds to me like Yandere Dev wants to turn his initial hobby-game into a lifelong career.
It took forever for Osana to be added to the game, and now that she is, she is so buggy. The debug version was more fun and frankly cleaner than the demo with Osana. He hasn't even figured out how to create truly functioning save/load system, and doesn't blame his utter lack of coding skills. Hire a goddamn programmer so this game doesn't crash constantly and break for no reason
A senpai is not a love Interest. The word senpai (先輩) literally means "senior." If you're a student, an older student would be your senpai. If you're a worker, a co-worker who's been at the job longer than you would be your senpai. The implication being that it's someone in the same field/institution/profession as you, and therefore is of similar social standing, but who is more experienced (but not necessarily older; a younger person can be your senpai as long as they've been at whatever for longer). The reverse of senpai is kouhai (後輩), lit. "junior."
None of this really matters unless you're planning on living and working in Japan, but Alex clearly doesn't know any of this given that Yan-chan's "senpai" is demonstrated to be in the same grade as her, making him a peer, not a senpai (the proper word in Japanese would be douki (同期), but you'd never actually call someone that; you'd just call them by their last name with some standard honorific like -san). You'd expect someone making an entire game around Japanese culture to actually know literally anything about Japanese culture, but that, apparently, would be expecting too much of Alex.

I'm gonna be that person, but "senpai" doesn't mean "love interest" but "upperclassman" (it gets used both in school and the workplace). A lot of senpais just so happen to be love interests. Not judging, I just wanna help out.

now i’m about to be 20 years old, and a sophomore in college. still depressed as shit and have had to overcome a lot of roadblocks to get where i am but i’d like to say i at least have better taste in entertainment.

Oftentimes, rewrites or refractors are done incrementally and can take years with a small team. Sometimes companies fail because they cannot optimize or adapt their spaghetti software to the market. This is because of past decisions made when initially designing the software. In the industry, new work that is caused by past software decisions is known as technical debt. Good decisions can generate a lot less technical debt than poor decisions. By poorly planning and designing the game, he has greatly increased the amount of work it would take to get the game to a stable state. He has essentially loaded himself up with technical debt, and to pay it off, it is going to take so many hours.... so many. The reason it’s called technical debt, is because as software moves forward and technology changes, your accumulation of debt can grow.
Which would be a factor if he could bring himself to subject his baby to the slightest of scrutiny. But, as this video touched on, he had his chance--a deal countless young nerds would _die_ for--and blew it with utter prejudice.

I always wonder if Yandere Dev would have had an easier time making Yandere Simulator if it had never blown up in the first place. His development speed only tanked when it first blew up, and his popularity distracted him from the game itself. I dunno, maybe Yandere Simulator could have been good if Yandev never had his ego inflated.

Noah Da Ark’s YandereDev is an open world game in the same style as Postal 2. Set over the course of a few months, every week brings a new rival for senpai’s affection, and you have to use that time to study their behavior and patterns and find your preferred way of eliminating them

It's funny that the video ends saying "He can probably still do the Kickstarter and it'll go well." Anticipating that Yandere Dev would do the Kickstarter soon like he said.
Of course, 2 years later, he's still putting it off. It's not just his refusal to communicate in a non-antagonizing way that's a problem, but it's like he genuinely doesn't want to finish the game.
He's stated recently he hasn't done a kickstarter because of misinformation and false accusations, and he needs to clear his name otherwise nobody will donate. Which I believe, the only people I see donating at this point are people unaware or don't care about his wrongdoings, kids that stole their parent's credit card, or trolls looking to sabatage his campaign. Either way this game is doomed to fail.

And I feel like if he gave a genuine attempt at it, people would support his kickstarter. Even if it's just people who have blind faith in him, actually beginning full development with a proper budget and roadmap for finishing the game would probably help people feel like it's not just blind faith. Yet he insists on having a perfected "V-Slice" for the Kickstarter for some reason.
