    1) VR - I can’t drive without it, 2) gloves, yes. I used Mechanix perforated gloves and replace them about once a year. 3) LFE setup. I somehow killed my amp so I’m driving without it, but wow it really puts me in the car especially with headphones. The harmonics of the car just come alive

      I feel like I need to do a video to see what VR is like again. I just felt like the performance wasn’t good enough at certain tracks get enough FPS.

    • @chrisc3825
      @chrisc3825 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@danielmorad Depends I suppose. If you bring graphics down, you can hit 120 Hz and FPS on some headsets (I did that with my Index), but if you crank a few things up and increase supersampling, you might be stuck at 90 Hz and FPS (which is what I do on my Quest 2 now).
      120 is definitely better but I think there's a bug with the Quest 2 drivers and my other hardware drivers causing weird issues.
      That all said, I've never sat in a triple screen cockpit so I might be missing out. Screens are more responsive and if you can get some depth perception with them setup properly, that may be the best way to go, but VR certainly is fun.

    • @Silverhks
      @Silverhks ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@chrisc3825 triple screens are nice but nothing beats the depth perception of VR.
      The biggest problem with VR is the reduced FOV. The loss your peripheral vision is a problem but I feel the ability to place your car precisely out ways this negative.

    You made a really great point about the gloves needing to last longer, and it's something a lot of people don't consider.
    It's the same about every piece of eqipment. QR for example, people think if it's used in a real car, it's good enough for their sim, because it's "just a sim". But a lot of the hardware in real cars, even race cars, just sucks. The QR is as light as possible, it's just a thin, loosely matching rod, and in lower series there's a bit of wiggle in the qr. It doesn't matter, it's solid side to side, and you get all the feedback through the car still, but in a sim rig, where stiffness in the mounting solution is essential because the wheel is the only connection you have to the simulated road, it would be horrible. In a real car it also doesn't need to last as long. There's maybe 20 races or so until the car gets a complete overhaul, so that's maybe somewhere around 100 times the wheel needs to attach and detach in a whole year. In your sim rig, you probably race every day or every other day, most people need to remove the wheel to get in and out, and then you sometimes switch the wheels in a session, or you take a break, so in one day you will use your QR anywhere from two to maybe six or seven times, possibly even more. That's gonna be 100 uses a lot sooner than a real car, maybe after a month already. And you won't check your rig throroughly, like they do in real cars after almost every session, your rig is meant to last a lot longer without maintenance. So if you expect your QR to be half decent for at least 3 years, which is already kind of a low bar, it needs to endure multiple thousands of uses, while being very sturdy, and still quick to use. In a real car, it just needs to be light as fuck, quick as fuck, and should absolutely not come off the shaft on its own.
    So in many ways, sim hardware actually needs to be better than racing hardware. It doesn't need to be safe and fireproof and certified, but it needs to last a lot longer, it needs to be a lot more comfortable, it needs to be a lot more precise.

    VR for depth perception, for car placement. Dolby Atmos for headphones, for front/rear ABS detection & brake balancing. Tillett racing kart seat fitted for my pelvis & lower back size without padding; it is the connection between body & rig for a very stiff brake pedal. American football wide receiver gloves with tips of the thumb, pointer & middle finger cut off & stitched. Palm stickiness & “feel”, and fingertip sensation. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoes. Natural rubber sole that wears in for foot & brake pedal connection. Correct amount of cushioning for a very stiff brake pedal. Coolshirt cool-a-clava for head temperature regulation for LFM endurance races. Not too hot or cold. Dyson fan with filter removed. Air flow without noise. 40oz Hydro Flask with flex straw lid; for all day iced drink.

    Hi Daniel, great videos, it's priceless having an actual racing drivers input on how to make sim racing as realistic as possible!
    I was wondering, have you ever considered or tried the SimXperience G-Seat and/or G-Belt? I have the G-Belt and I love it, having sustained breaking forces is awesome. It also does cornering g-forces. I can only imagine how immersive the combo of that and the g-seat would be!

    Due to lack of space, I have triple 23" monitors. My primary is an Acer that has minimal side bezels, and my 2 side monitors were leftovers from when he upgraded. So placing the "hand me downs" just behind mine, is almost seemless, but I would like to try a bezel delete. But I do also have a VR headset, so not a priority!
    I would really like a button box of some sort, but the budget is not there yet.
    Budget isn't there for any motion or haptics right now either. Although I do have a Logitech 5.1 surround.
    I use mountain biking gloves. Really like them because the backing is breathable, the palm has some comfort passing, and they fit amazing. Got them on sale too! As for shoes, I use a pair of Nike runners that have an almost gum rubber sole. I don't drive a real vehicle without shoes, I can't do a sim rig without them either.
    Currently I use a wheel stand, so my chair is adjustable. If/when I get a legitimate frame rig, that's when I can figure out the sitting position.

      Thanks so much. The reason I don’t drive on ACC is because the breaking model is very far off of reality. I liked your gear recommendations and all seem very valuable and effective. I’d love to add motion to my sim but unsure how I could with having essentially a full half car cage for immersion. Would be a large setup. Question: are you running immersive lighting such as Philips? I am always curious to see how drivers run their setups… in lit room or darkness etc. I found outside distractions tough for concentration hence why I built the enclosure.

    Recently got my Pimax 8KX and nothing beats VR with proper FOV in terms of immersion, but I don't have access to a race-car and it's the closed thing I can get. Otherwise 6 DOF G-Seat and G-Belt with 7 shakers, SC2 Pro with HE Ultimates and other nice stuff. I switched from socks to beach shoes lately and the Buttkickers are strong enough vibrating through the thin sole, but socks with rubber-padding sounds like a nice alternative and now I got used to the grip. Otherwise I prefer finger-free bicycle gloves to type without taking them off and my goto-sim is rF2, which is both a sim and a game, since there are no real consequences if messing up. Even soccer is called a game despite the common injuries and one tip: lubricate your base-side QR a bit and the wheel will come right off for quite some time.

    • @Leynad778
      @Leynad778 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@danielmorad The performance should be more than good enough with your PC or it's iRacing. But with OpenXR I guess all tracks run rock solid 90 fps at least, probably even 120 while the GPU is half asleep. OpenXR also provides optional fixed foveated rendering, which means it blurs the image in the peripheral vision for another performance gain. With my 4080 I can run 4 times 4k resolution with 90 fps in AMS2, AC and rF2. I've reduced it to 3 times 4k to get really solid 90 fps in every circumstance (so far).

    With regards to the extension shaft, there is talk on the Simucube forums, even from one of the guys working at Simucube, that they can cause premature wear of the motor bearings due to the extra leverage, leading to increased force on the bearings. That said there are a lot of people who have used extension shafts for a long time without any apparent problems.
    With regards to gloves I just use good quality cycling gloves (Endura MT500 D30 in my case) as these are designed for long term regular hard use. I've bought so called "Sim Racing Gloves" in the past and they've just fallen apart after 20 hours use.

    As a professional driver, you input means a lot to the average sim racers and people that have been struggling to find the right setup for themselves. Personally for me, i have been chasing the numbers since around 2018 to find the right setup for my rig and i still find myself making adjustments every few months. In your seating video, you mentioned the angle of your seat and wheel base. In this video, you mentioned your monitor distance. I would like to ask, what is the angle your monitors are set at, and also, what is the angle of your pedal deck?
    For the average person like myself and im sure many many others chasing the correct setup, have you considered making a "this is my rig setup" style video? A video with all in one showing angles, measurements, distances of your rig. As well as in game view settings, wheel settings and possibly your wheel base settings. This would greatly help many that chase the dream of being in a real race car, but in reality, a sim rig will be the closest thing ever. Your input as a real race car driver is extremely valuable and i personally thank you for the information that i have seen from you so far and am excited to see what you continue to produce when you have the time.

    I've grown accustom to using the Steelseries Arctis 7 chat wheel function. Super helpful to have the mixer dial on the headset when you're trying to concentrate and team mates in discord are being a bit chatty.
    I'm not sure if there are other headsets have a similar functions.
    The stream deck has functions for mixing as well, but not always as quick and handy.
    If you want to get super fancy, you can also get a Korg nanoKontrol2 midi mixer and pair it with software to mix your audio on the fly.
    I know this is an older video, but one nit picky thing about the audio mix, and this a common gripe I have. The music mix is way too loud compared to the other audio. The music itself is already pretty loud on it's own and would need to be brought down a lot to even out the audio. Using a LUFS plugin to monitor the loudness levels could help get a more consistent mix across the audio - the audience won't have to adjust the volume throughout the video.

    I tried the bezel free kit - didn't like them because the vertically offset the monitor images making things look off.

      It could be that you didn’t set it up correctly. Mine seems great.

      @@danielmorad I tried everything. Have curved monitors, so that may be the difference.

    I wonder if you tried a hexapod to feel g-forces, specially the weight of the body, with a surge back and pitch forward, this lifting from the seat when braking, it gives so much more life to the braking pedal, or some lateral acceleration when cornering, with sway, not to mention traction loss with yaw, which the D-Box cannot simulate.
    Last not least, I have a bass-shaker under my pedals, to inform me about ABS, wheel slip or black on the brake pedal, I really cannot do without this cheap addition with simhub

      I really don’t like when motion rigs move too much. That’s why I love the DBOX. it’s subtle.

    • @tomsawyer2112
      @tomsawyer2112 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielmorad Yes, with a hexapod, there is more motion to generate modest gforces, you need to have the monitors on the motion rig, and even draken or close the surroundings to avoid rolling wall/ceiling motion in the background. There may be more intense occasional false cues with very fast cars on short curvy tracks, with a lot of hard acceleration and hard braking.
      But for the price of 10K, to me, the DBox is too little, too limited, it is still only 3DOF, and I really don't like their false advertisement,
      there is no way a pitch, roll, heave can simulate traction loss, which after all is a most important feature.
      I tried the Electra X2 Extreme, 80k ?, apparently used by professionnals, a seat mover with traction loss, very brutal with a lot of motion, but constant false cues on the braking.
      So a hexapod for the price of a DBox tuned to the right amount of motion was my best choice, after testing them all.

    Does my wife back seat giggling as I spin out count? :) I am definitely gonna have to look at the bezel free kits! Thx! I also really like to have the buttons because I hate having to reach for the keyboard behind the wheel for the extras.

    You want to drive in my sim you have to fit in it.
    I taped baked bean cans to my daughter’s shoes so she could reach the pedals. She done good 😊
    EDIT sorry I actually taped the cans on to the pedals

    It's called sim not game. Some whom don't agree, some people can't afford to actually race due to physical, financial or mental reasons. From someone whom has raced in a real car and wants to get back into one again. Racing online is the closes one can get, if they race with other people whom look at it like a sim as well. I've raced with people whom think of it as a game, and it is frustrating and annoying at times when you get wrecked by someone whom just doesn't care. But you get that everywhere anyway. But if you are into motorsport but can't actually race a car, go to a hire kart place and some actually have a race night for those whom want to race. Then also race online after that and see if you think if it is a sim or a game.
