The hard part with sim racing for me, sim racing is all visuals. I know braking and turn in patience are my weak point. I always compare it being in an actual car (I've done track time in the past). It's not the same, looking at a screen vs feeling the car and seeing actual pyshical visuals, is just two different worlds. The instructions you give are very well put.
You’re so right. It’s something that takes time. Personally, I found VR a great way to transition from real life to the sim. It gives you more depth perception.
Ha! Love that you use the string concept with steering - I started using it after a recent epiphanie; I've never reeeaaally understood "break in straight line" because obviousley that's what I'm fricken trying to do, but i was distracted by thinking of the whole car and had a hard time feeling when it was indeed straight. Then I changed it to "always break with the wheel as centered as possible" and that was so much easier to judge. Then once that clicked, to help time my trail or accel i thought of it as the wheel being "straight = 100% input, more angle = proportionally less input" then that intuitively led me to imagine strings pulling on the pedals. It has been helping me smooth out/ coordinate my hands to feet and seems effective, but I wasn't sure if it was a "good" idea or just a bridge between total noob and better techniques, mostly because I hadn't heard it before and if you watch onboards it's not really done like that, or at least very hard to tell. Anyway you've ratified my theory, thank you! PS - I've been using it to time corner exit accel too - do you you recommend that as well? do you use it as a loose guiding principle or do you very strictly follow it? thanx again! PPS - Jimmy sent me here - great channel so far!

I originally learnt the 'string' technique as it related to corner exit acceleration. It's a good starting point. Interesting to see it used for trail braking also.

Thank you for helping me understand how wrong I’m braking and how to correct years of terrible braking habits. I’ve been treating every turn as a “brake late and hard as possible” often killing momentum through fast turns or trying to ask too much from the car in tight turns. Liked and Subscribed!
Hey man. Just wanted to let you know. I’ve been sim racing for around 8 years, and been racing on different game systems well before that. This little video has totally improved my technique to the tune of shaving 8-12 seconds, which seems insane, off my current laps. Now this is one track and one day, but holy shit. I knew the concept of everything you’re talking about, but I dunno I guess the way you explained it just clicked. So thanks a million and you got a subscriber for life. Really like that you’re a pro GT3 driver and can use that experience to host a channel on sim racing. You will have tons of subs in the future.

I was just learning Hokenheim in rFactor 2 and it took me some time to realize I had to brake much earlier on T1 than I thought at first, even if the corner is much faster than other ones. Your video explains that very well. The objective is to have higher exit speed, and if you brake too late, you have to slow down more to make the turn, and your exit suffers from it. However, if you are on a hair pin, you don't have a choice but to go slower on the corner, so might as well brake as late as possible. Great explanation 👌
You explain things very well man. I practice hard and I think the trail braking has taken the longest to get right and I'm not there yet but also I notice how tense my body is when in a sim race. I know this is affecting my braking also. Thanks for another great lesson 👍🏻🍻🥃🥃🍀🇮🇪🤝🏻
@@danielmorad that video helped me a lot, my legs were not in the right position, I changed that, changed my pedal position also, I’m using more of my feet to brake and accelerate now and that made me have a lot more control on trail braking and traction coming out of the corners! Thank you!

As a guy who is enjoining starting the sim adventure and an engineer, love understanding these strategies and mechanics. It makes what I've been "feeling" make sense.
This is really great information. I think many people try to utilize a gradual braking method but then get drilled by the people who just slam on the brakes. Definitely good to keep in mind though.
I’ve found myself that I’m faster if I break softer in the faster corners but never really understood why. Now that you mention it keeping the balance more neutral or having control over the balance of the car makes perfect sense why did I not realise this earlier.
That’s provided so much clarity for me after mentioning the most important part, being the balance of the car. Can’t wait to try this and hopefully find a couple tenths here and there. “Last of the late brakers” will be getting ditched. Thank you, and you’ve got another sub. Great content.

Pro racing driver giving lesson about racing, I am listening Sir. My questions are: 1. Does your new Simcube pedals help you to go faster? Compared to older one. 2. Do you activate ABS when driving in sim racing? 3. Which one faster, ABS on or ABS off? 4. Which one faster, TC on or TC off? Your Vlog really helps me to improve, much appreciated.
Simucube pedals make me more consistent. I try not to activate the ABS too hard. ABS on and TC on but set to the correct settings is important. Glad it’s helping.
I’ve watched so many videos on trail braking and they all do fast corners so that’s what I’ve been trying to do in hairpins too 🤦🏾♂️ thanks for explaining both types 😊
You might want to speak about throttle steer and breaking together All your info was spot on, but in a “purpose built” high horsepower car, throttle steer will gain significantly in lap time
Editing and production are top notch, but this is just scratching the surface on Beginner Braking Techniques. Advanced techniques are not even mentioned here, let alone anything considered "Mastery". I mean, the main method you describe will induce people into coasting through corners. Almost any coasting is losing time. Fully off the brake before turning in? Perhaps on a few corners, but stating it (at least as I took it) as the rule rather than the exception is confusing at best, and deceptive at worst. This video will get you through corners SAFER, but almost certainly not FASTER. Criticisms aside, I very much WANT to like your channel. Any real content us pretend drivers can get from a real one is gold. Just keep working at it.
Really good channel that's appeared here! attention to detail on your videos is nice and they're very well made. The effort is obvious. Maybe some video about how traction control, or ABS should be used to adjust your driving style in disciplines, like GT, that use them? I'm sure a lot of us apply the same approach whether these are on or off but surely it must be different.

I appreciate your efforts, primarily I race f3, recently practicing Gt3, f3 is barely any brakes. In iracing seems like everyone is braking so frigging late its ridiculous, I almost get crushed cause I brake normal, it sickens me that to be competitive I have to do the same or get wrecked, arguments blow up, wasn't expecting you to brake so early mate... whatever. today's iracers have figured a way to break the physics of the sim. Even the ai does it! 😢
Great video bud. I find I focus on two main things; hitting the apex point with as much speed as possible, and getting my car position correct at that point. Other than that, I allow my braking markers and exit points to create themselves. This let me focus on keeping the car on the edge. Nice to see you spoke about balance and weight transfer, two things I think a lot of rookies forget about.
@Daniel Morad Great explanations ! Question : isn't it more correct to use "Load transfer" instead of "Weight transfer" ? I learnt the difference with that joke : "Weight transfer is when your stepmother has no seatbelt locked and you use full braking" ! So it's more load on front tires, yes, on braking but the weight of the car never changes : 1000kg car is always 1000kg in any movement of it. Am I wrong ? Thanks a lot if you answer !
@Daniel Morad I am a new sub and enjoying your expertise. When learning to drive @ 14 in 1984 my Dad HAMMERED into me “NEVER touch the brake with your left foot.” Now I have to learn left foot braking in iRacing and I don’t know how to start 🙄
@@danielmorad I bit the bullet and started left foot braking. Feels really weird but I already appreciate the lack of lag when I need to brake. Bonus side effect I now realize all my clutch down-shifting has been pointless. Not taking LFB in real races yet... just AI races for now. Cheers

Great video and good points. I do find the music distracting and it made me go back a few times for re-caps. Fading it in and out to not overload the viewer could be a step up.
2 1/2 years into sim racing and trail braking is one of the things I still struggle with. Sometimes I can do it right and sometimes I get it way wrong it gets so frustrating. I always find myself 2-3sec off the faster drivers.

Great video! I would have wanted to see more explanation about the tips about how to let go off braking (trail brake off). I think I go off the brakes too fast before starting to rotate the wheel for the turning point but I have trouble understanding what's the optimal target and how to figure it out other than lots of trial and error.

I actually moved away from braking points and moved into end of braking point instead. The reason for this is that I found it easier to set the correct entry speed plus that the laps differ a bit or in race it might actually be quite drastic different. //Motorcycle world stage veteran and pro level drifting coach
Could you make a video showing the approximate weight distribution of each tire from the braking point to exit point? Assuming a balanced car has 25% on each tire. Thx
This is going to help me a lot with T2 on Thunderhill East. I've been braking way too late and too hard and the car is upset through what should be a fast, stable corner.
There is a general tendency to approach the corner too fast e-x-a-c-t-l-y as you point out and by this the car has difficulty to turn the corner because the outside front wheel has still to much pressure on it and drivers can't step on the gas early. Ideally, as a driver that gets the breaking right, you can open the steering wheel earlier while simultaneously but progressively going on the gas. To get this right is the most important thing on a race track I believe.
Corner dependant. It comes down to the balance you feel in the car as well. Experiment in a faster corner with earlier braking but less pressure. If you’re braking at the “75” mark and at 50% pressure, if you feel like the balance is off or you’re over slowing the corner, brake earlier (around 100) but with only 35% pressure and slow down the trail brake. See how that changes things.

Question : isn't it more correct to use "Load transfer" instead of "Weight transfer" ? I learnt the difference with that joke : "Weight transfer is when your stepmother has no seatbelt locked and you use full braking" !
So it's more load on front tires, yes, on braking but the weight of the car never changes : 1000kg car is always 1000kg in any movement of it.

@Daniel Morad I am a new sub and enjoying your expertise. When learning to drive @ 14 in 1984 my Dad HAMMERED into me “NEVER touch the brake with your left foot.” Now I have to learn left foot braking in iRacing and I don’t know how to start 🙄
You can brake with left or right foot. Technique is the same.
@@danielmorad I bit the bullet and started left foot braking. Feels really weird but I already appreciate the lack of lag when I need to brake. Bonus side effect I now realize all my clutch down-shifting has been pointless. Not taking LFB in real races yet... just AI races for now. Cheers

2 1/2 years into sim racing and trail braking is one of the things I still struggle with. Sometimes I can do it right and sometimes I get it way wrong it gets so frustrating. I always find myself 2-3sec off the faster drivers.
I made a video about steering with your feet. That’s a good one to watch.

Great video! I would have wanted to see more explanation about the tips about how to let go off braking (trail brake off). I think I go off the brakes too fast before starting to rotate the wheel for the turning point but I have trouble understanding what's the optimal target and how to figure it out other than lots of trial and error.

I actually moved away from braking points and moved into end of braking point instead. The reason for this is that I found it easier to set the correct entry speed plus that the laps differ a bit or in race it might actually be quite drastic different. //Motorcycle world stage veteran and pro level drifting coach

This is going to help me a lot with T2 on Thunderhill East. I've been braking way too late and too hard and the car is upset through what should be a fast, stable corner.
That’s awesome. This is definitely going to help you. You’ll find a lot more stability with the different braking style.

There is a general tendency to approach the corner too fast e-x-a-c-t-l-y as you point out and by this the car has difficulty to turn the corner because the outside front wheel has still to much pressure on it and drivers can't step on the gas early. Ideally, as a driver that gets the breaking right, you can open the steering wheel earlier while simultaneously but progressively going on the gas. To get this right is the most important thing on a race track I believe.
So when you say lighter breaking, are we talking 50% and less or just 80% 'ish instead of 100%
Corner dependant. It comes down to the balance you feel in the car as well. Experiment in a faster corner with earlier braking but less pressure. If you’re braking at the “75” mark and at 50% pressure, if you feel like the balance is off or you’re over slowing the corner, brake earlier (around 100) but with only 35% pressure and slow down the trail brake. See how that changes things.
