Paper Mario: TTYD has quite a bit of unused dialogue. The officially translated unused dialogue alone is enough to fill a nearly one-hour long video.     I’m glad they fixed the cricket-frog thing in the remake. Do you know if they fixed the choice of attacking Grodus or not in the remake? I love your profile btw❤

    i'd say the thing with waving and shaking text is almost certainly a mistake that was left in because it went unnoticed. probably wouldn't have been difficult to implement, even if that meant making more or less hacky changes to the core text system. and maybe someone did notice, but when they did the issue was low enough priority that it was never fixed.

    21:02 I could be mistaken, but I think that IS in the game. I actually heard that line. I think you get that line only if you use an item on that boss that strikes him with lightning. (The implication being that your lightning attack fueled the power cells of the mech.)

      I just tested this (in the Gamecube original), and lightning didn't trigger any extra dialogue for me.

    Looks like some of these things were changed in the remake like the crickets/frogs and the 64 references! Seems that text still can't be shaky and wavy at the same time though, at least Merlon's isn't

      Yeah, I noticed that the text still doesn't shake and wave at the same time as well. Maybe they were more concerned about being faithful to the way the text was, than to the original intentions behind it.

    somebody already commented this, but the text at 19:38 can actually be seen on the “Gamecube Interactive Multi-game demo disc version 18”, which was available in kiosks before the games release. whats cool is that you can see that piece of text in action as it was intended, since the demo disc has luckily been preserved online and theres footage of the demo as well

    Funny enough a lot of these dialogue mistakes were fixed in the remake. The biggest and best change though is that Grodus’ ultimatum responses were corrected.

    Is the Grodus dialogue really a mistake? Seems fine to me, so I am confused.

      In this scene, Grodus commands you to stop, or he will kill Princess Peach on the spot. So if you choose not to fight, you are obeying him for the sake of the Princess's safety. And yet, both of Grodus' questions are implying the opposite. He accuses you of defying him, and of disregarding Princess Peach's safety.

      @@DisableYT Thanks for replying! I guess I kind of see it differently? Like I can totally understand how it could be seen as a mistake, but I still see an alternate way of viewing this specific dialogue. To me, this choice is an illusion. Both options lead to the same answer, which is common in games that let you choose an answer, specifically Mario/Nintendo games. Grodus' has already been defeated, the battle is over. He says you need to stop fighting or he'll end Peach's life. To me, that's just a lie to get some sort of edge on you as a final tactic. If you continue to attack despite his threat, he gets angry that you would defy him and put Peach's safety at risk. If you stop attacking as he commands, him saying "Do you dare defy me? Do you not care for the life of your pitiful princess?" could be taken differently, as in "You've come this far, attempting to defy me, and you would even go as far as putting the very Princess you wished to save into more danger?" But that's just the way I personally view it. I may be incorrect, but to me it seems to be more up to our own interpretation.

      @@TheWarburner I could see that if the answer was the same regardless, but if you choose to fight him, his response does change. He'll instead say "Stop your blubbering! This is it! Meet your end!!" It seems to imply Grodus thinks he can continue his assault uncontested, which I think is more fitting for the "Don't attack" option. Though I do find that one less objectionable than the one I mentioned in my video.

    Ok to add to the Hootail's weakness being crickets here's a fun fact. In the demo for the game that you would play at stores they do say Hooktail's weakness is frogs. So in the final version of the English translation they changed it to crickets.

      @@DisableYT I guess, but what I'm pointing to is the fact that everything has been redrawn and remodeled from the characters, environments, etc. It's very noticeable when you compare it to the original.

    I commented this in a reply to someone else, but I thought it might be good to post in its own separate comment: Actually, (*in regards to Goomba King & Chestnut King) I think this might just be a mistranslation error. Seeing how "Goomba King" got translated into "Chestnut King", I figured that there might have been some misunderstanding in regards to the Japanese words for Goomba (クリボー "kuribo-") and chestnut (栗 "kuri"). So I double checked a Japanese wiki for the Goomba King & his name is "Kuri King" (クリキング). Obviously, the "kuri" in his name is referencing Goombas ("kuribo-"), but it also means "chestnut" so it would be easy to misunderstand when translating. The JP wiki even said that you can attack a chestnut tree during his battle & the spiky things that fall from the tree are chestnuts in burrs. So I guess the Goomba King is heavily associated with chestnuts in the first Paper Mario game.

    Man, that's a lot of stuff l missed out on when l abandoned my spoof hack. I dunno if you or the community knows, but there are some unused text functions, too! I found them by searching the used functions in the executable, l think (this was years ago). <noise> The noise effect from 64! It's kinda hard to see, but it's there. <se> Used by Ms. Mouse and Thwomp Quizzers on only two maps each. Seems to do nothing? <vol 100> Volume! 100 seems to be slightly quieter than default. Can be muted or made louder. <paper %s %d> Hangs if there's no second variable. Otherwise, dims the star prompt permanently? Strange. <me> %s Nothing??? <r> For Japanese Furigana. Does nothing outside of Japan? So, really just a volume controller and the noise effect are useful, but it's pretty nifty. Doesn't seem to be on TCRF, either.

    the "cant run away!" dialogue really seems to me like that would show when you try to run away but fail? i can't remember if there's dialogue in that case, but maybe that's where it was intended to go

    For the duplicated dialogue, my guess was that there's a master version of the file where it was deduped, and it would search backwards to earlier versions of the text, so that you'd only have to enter it once, and it was then exploded out into the multiple copies in the disc version, for lookup speed. The missing wait step that you spotted suggests that maybe the devs really did have to maintain multiple identical copies by hand...

      It's possible that what you're suggesting is true for the original Japanese version. I don't know enough about that version to know if it has similar mistakes in its duplicate text. But that would definitely have been a smart way to do it.
