Great pacing on this video. This kept my attention the entire thirty-four minutes. I was surprised when we were already at the summary, because time went by so fast.
I was playing Super Mario Bros experimenting with minus world back on the original NES in the 90s. Went into the pipe in the underwater section of minus world, and I ended up going to a place that I had never seen before. I don't know how, or what combination of events took place, but I ended up going to a different underwater section than the typical clone of 7-2, and it has been making me crazy in the 40 years since then.
All of that shenanigans with waiting on a title screen, phantom bullet bills, etc. didn't sound absurd for me. After sm64 speedruns, nothing seems impossible😂
Seeing all of that work put into the Plant and the BB only to find out not doing the Fast Excel makes everything way easier is just such a speedrunner thing to see.
Awesome video. It still really is funny to me that for so many years we all just agreed TAS 8-2 was impossible until one day someone asked "why not?" I think theres a really important lesson there
Awesome video regarding the history of 8-2, it’s really cool to see it all documented including all the weird oddities such as framerule offsets, plant despawn and HitzCritz meme 4:54 attempt by doing the framerule rollover (which he didn’t do right cause he offset the rng and framerule number during the delay!!!).
I came up with combos for the original Killer Instinct in my sleep. It was really cool dreaming up combos and having them actually work. The good ol days if Malls and Arcades!
Imagine if the new standard would be waiting for 20 minutes. It might shatter the speedrun community and separate the casual speedrunners and competitive speedrunners.
It's funny 15 years ago I made a small game for windows phone that had time leader board on levels and this same speed run spirit arised from players who probably never had speedran anything. You could see one player discovering a new strategy, and with that clue, other discovering that and improving the timing until again someone thinks outside the box and finds a new solution, it was more puzzle oriented but you said it well in the conclusion of the video.
I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I don't understand why the billet bill glitch is worth waiting for? Why is it faster to wait on the stairs for the bullet than it is to just continue sprinting to the flag?
I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it has to do with the fireworks that go off sometimes when you beat a level. If I remember right, the number of fireworks depends on the value of the timer when you beat the level. Soay e the bullet bill glitch lets you beat the level as fast as possible, which results in a timer value that would give you fireworks which eat up time, but because Mario doesn't enter the castle the fireworks get skipped.
In engineering I often experience easier solutions over time. A difficult solution is much easier to start working on. I always say "an easy solution is the hardest". Thanks for the video.
When the video starts with some folk trying to find a way to despawn the pirahna so the jump is easier, just to realise in the end, the piranha doesn't matter. Speedrunning is amazing.
I know this has been said before, but it's crazy how we think we know everything about a game, only to uncover so many secrets and glitches years later. And if so many exploits can be found in something like SMB, imagine how much can be found in longer, more sprawling games
The amount of coding/engineering that went into these early “simple” Nintendo games is mind blowing. Needless to say, those reverse engineering and dissecting it to this day is just as impressive
After that, do the history of World 8-3, and include it from the humble beginnings of Super Mario Bros. speedruns to the 243 FPG on Super Mario Bros. Extended, as it makes a 4:53 possible!
Phantom bullet bills are virtual particles spawning off the black hole horizon that is the edge of the screen. Left long enough, the off-screen sections will decay and explode violently. Be careful Mario!
As someone who has the urge to get to the bottom of something when im invested enough, i can 100% understand the dedication of these people and respect them for it. Also, that is probably the reason i love this content. Keep improving it guys, cant wait to see what you come up with next.

yeah, sometimes I stare at my white hairs and cry a little, lol
It still really is funny to me that for so many years we all just agreed TAS 8-2 was impossible until one day someone asked "why not?"
I think theres a really important lesson there
Awesome video regarding the history of 8-2, it’s really cool to see it all documented including all the weird oddities such as framerule offsets, plant despawn and HitzCritz meme 4:54 attempt by doing the framerule rollover (which he didn’t do right cause he offset the rng and framerule number during the delay!!!).
Yeah lol, it's extra funny in hindsight because he/we didn't think about title screen powerups
Why do you call him "Tubby"? Nobody calls him that.
Because saying 420 blaze it every 5 seconds would demonetize the video
i call him tubby are you calling me nobody,
I came up with combos for the original Killer Instinct in my sleep. It was really cool dreaming up combos and having them actually work. The good ol days if Malls and Arcades!
It was the recent solar storm that caused the plant to despawn. It was Kosmic rays
The video on the history of 4-2 by SummoningSalt got me into watching speed runners and following your channel.
10:51 I absolutely love his reaction.
this video is a masterpiece. It's entertaining, informative, and very well made. Quality work!
The dream part was pure insanity.
The best ideas always come in ur dreams😂😂
This video was AMAZING I haven't been doing smb Speedruns in a while and this video made me wanna go back and try this trick
Ngl I'm enjoying theses commentated videos
Thank you Kosmic! Im making a video on Mario bros any% records and this video will be very helpful with explaining the perfect 8-2 framerule!
00:03 I have not
Boner farts??? I'm drunk ngl bih
When the video starts with some folk trying to find a way to despawn the pirahna so the jump is easier, just to realise in the end, the piranha doesn't matter. Speedrunning is amazing.
*THANK YOU* for not being sponsored by BetterHelp.
@@callumcolquhoun8501 bro be quiet you don't know the betterhelp controveries
I know this has been said before, but it's crazy how we think we know everything about a game, only to uncover so many secrets and glitches years later. And if so many exploits can be found in something like SMB, imagine how much can be found in longer, more sprawling games
I forgot this was not a Summoning Salt video
You’re sense of humor is great!

It's honestly kinda crazy just how much strategy and tech can be packed into such a short speedrun. I wonder what level is gonna be trivialized next.
this video is how I learnt about the 1 min strat for LLL Elevator Tour, somehow missed it entirely. Very cool!!
Phantom bullet bills are virtual particles spawning off the black hole horizon that is the edge of the screen. Left long enough, the off-screen sections will decay and explode violently. Be careful Mario!
O hi
pls don’t delete comment your first and next kid said first and no make him first so pls no delete
@@YTTV_Mic8sure lol, I won’t delete it
Excellent and fascinating video! Thank you, Kosmic!
30 views in 2 minutes, didn’t fell off?!?!!?!
Fell off

@@dr.phlosion7485 No, stats are rising. He never had as much as 3o views in 2 minutes. New wr.
I hope your comment despawns

Kosmic: "His script tested millions of combinations, and in the end he found…"
Doctor Strange: "…only one."
As someone who has the urge to get to the bottom of something when im invested enough, i can 100% understand the dedication of these people and respect them for it. Also, that is probably the reason i love this content. Keep improving it guys, cant wait to see what you come up with next.
I love how often we get speedrun content. I hope the years continue to drag on and it just keeps happening my friends.
9:44 Plant went on vacation, never came back.
It was nice to have great memories of watching somewes streams come flooding back during this video, but wow time has flown by
I remember when cosmic said
“Back then, it was word on the says…” like it’s not like that still. According to my great grandmothers cousin, twice removed on her dad’s pet goldfish’s roommates left cousin’s said “Matching the taste in 8-2 is impossible, then there’s a faster strategy, that has multiple tame perfect inputs.
I love the Blaster Master music in the background. That game is badass.
It’s crazyyyy how consistent this game plays to the casual user with all these variables
when i clicked on this video i thought "its going to be the average speedrun update where you do this glitch to save some time, here is this insane way someone found it"... then you just straight hit me in the face with the most random, crazy stuff. like solutions in a DREAM??? PHANTOM BULLET BILLS? LIKE WHATTTTT?!?
Dude, crazy how an old game like this still has stuff to discover.
Wow these deep analyses really give a new dimension to the game and the effort behind it!
A Kosmic video with the Summoning Salt video. My life is complete.
The fact that this extremely specific and unlikely plant despawn happened by accident is hilarious, and by that specific individual no less
You know you're getting into serious nerd stuff when a video about a single Super Mario level is half an hour long :D Respect for doing this!
