I can't believe the alphabet is literally laid out from A to Z and yet nobody had made that connection.

From what I saw, "Hylian" in Breath of the Wild and ToTK are similar. They're literally written in english romanticized letters, but in a strange font that makes them appear unreadable. Most of them just saying what it says on the tin "like the Stables say "Stable" and the signs all say like "This way/That way". It's really cool how just using a goofy font can make an area feel so foreign yet familiar.
and then there's Tooth and Tail's spoken language which is a phoenic cipher...of english. Yet sounds like an east european language. People are so creative! We solved Tower of Babel.

there's a couple characters that have double uses, I can't remember what all of them are, but it's like maybe R and G use the same character. I think there's 3 or 4 Hylian characters like that. At least for botw/totk. The Hylian font is different in most of the zelda games.@@MarioMastar

5:21 just fyi and also on the subject of obscure Sunshine stuff: Mario can only hang from a ledge for about 15 seconds before trembling and falling off, I don't remember this mechanic explained on the manual, maybe there's an npc out there who tells you about it, but it's definitely intended and not a glitch.
Just a little bit of info in hope of defending one of my favorite games ever and Noki Bay, an area I really like, though I can see why this mechanic was removed in later games.

It's kind of insane how seemingly nobody has tried this before, especially considering this is basically the EXACT same thing people did for Splatoon several years ago. Considering how much Sunshine was brought up during at least the hype period of the first Splatoon game, it's a shock nobody thought to revisit these symbols.
If you wanna get the highest quality versions of the symbols for the game, maybe look around for any texture rips online. That way we can all just make sure for certain that the letters only found in the alphabet wall or the sign are 100% accurate.

I'm probably looking WAY too deep into this but as a History nerd i can't help but think having both dolphic & regular scripts was inspired by the fact that if you look at the history of most Mediterranean islands (ESPECIALLY those in the East like Crete & Cyprus for example) they've almost always had 2 separate scripts in common usage by large numbers of ppl. Just for crete alone during the minoans they had hieroglyphs & an Alphabet used separately, then during Roman & later Venetian rule both Greek & Latin alphabets were widely used, then during Ottoman times it was Arabic & Greek, and lastly nowadays both English & Greek Alphabets are widely seen & used. It's almost certainly just a coincidence but i suppose you never know

It may be from playing the game so much, but I can read Gelato and Parco easily. I think I realized those signs weren't gibberish when I noticed that the Sand Cabana sign is different on the Japanese version (where Gelato Beach is called "Mamma Beach"). Props for figuring out "viking" and noticing the alphabet frieze tho
(Also why does everyone think the ledge drop thing is a glitch? It's like the whole challenge of these ledge sections, and the reason why they give you spaces to get up and rest on the way across!)

    • @GBDupree
      @GBDupree หลายเดือนก่อน

Actually I think the glitch he is referring to is him being unable to move across the ledge at all. I recently tried out the Sunburn mod, and noticed that I couldn't go across the ledge like I remember being able to, once the ledge angles up or down, mario just gets stuck there. I don't remember it being like that at ALL in the original GCN version, so I can only imagine its some sort of emulation glitch (or a version difference, and the emulation uses an older glitchier version), and considering he is playing the Switch 3D All Stars version, it must also be that way. I also think the people assume the dropping is a glitch because there is no animation to show him getting tired. But this is also something I don't remember having a problem with in the original. As a kid it was clear to me that you had a set time to stay on the ledge before Mario tires out and drops. So I can only assume there used to be some sort of animation to show that, which is broken in the emuation and not playing, making the drop off seem glitchier than it should be.

Given the context, it looks like it may have been the code name for a chip in the gamecube as Sunshine was a launch title for it. They always throw little easter eggs in there like that to reference the technology that made it possible. Could also be the first initials or last initials of the group of devs who worked on the graphics based on hierarchy. We'll never know but it's kind of fun to speculate since we got THIS far and I doubt it's completely random given the location of the keys on the keyboard would be awkward to randomly type in that order.

This is absolutely fascinating! I never would’ve guessed it was actually a translatable language, this is so awesome! Many of the letters do look a lot like English characters, and it’s really interesting that some of this correspond to Italian letters.

This is so fascinating! I really thought I knew everything there was to know about this game but your discovery is so exciting! I genuinely got chills when it turned out the brochure symbols for noki/mare bay had been changed to accommodate the language differences. That seems to really confirm that you're right about which letters you've matched with each other! And this video was presented in such a good way! So much kudos to you!

wow, that is incredible. I admire your determination not to be sold on Sunshine’s swirly alphabet being gibberish, which ended up being the language of the Nokis/Mare, that’s pretty cool! Makes me curious of some other games now that also appear to use gibberish on signs and some textures like Paper Mario, I’m intrigued in taking a deeper dive myself now so thank you for that!

This is wild, I actually noticed the Viking thing forever ago. When I was younger I *only* figured out the word Viking and did, in fact, assume the rest was gibberish and that they just made the swirls for this particular sign say Viking for fun. I'm both surprised and really impressed by this video, and I congratulate you for figuring out something that no one else put the time and effort into.
Random side note, in my head I always called this ride in SMS the "Viking Voyager" based off of a viking-themed swinging boat ride at Worlds of Fun. Buuuut the swinging boat ride I was thinking of is actually called the Sea Dragon. Viking Voyager is a log flume ride nearby lol. So I stumbled onto Viking pretty much by luck.

i know you said in another video that you didn't come up with this all on your own, but i'm amazed you were the first person to go in-depth in this on video (and possibly even the first to decipher the whole alphabet). i'm not sure if i'm more amazed at this or that it took 22 years for someone to do it. either way, kudos to you!
i hope this video gets way more views than it has now. so underrated.
