  • Thanks to a stunning creation called "Art's Dream", Media Molecule fires its new engine on all cylinders. PS4 and PS4 Pro both get a supreme workout here, and each segment shows something completely different - ideas that might inspire the community to go further. It's hard to see anyone matching the developer's level of polish here however.

      @@CoTyyy This game's been in development for 7 years, and that's just counting from the time they first announced it, not counting the at least half-year/1 year of preplanning. We don't know their working arrangement with Media Molecule, but you have to give some props to Sony for basically allowing MM to keep working at what seems to be a leisurely pace for 7 years, up till the actual end of the PS4 lifecycle. Even if Sony didn't actually have much faith anymore in the project, they still didn't really rush them. It's more than likely a combination of MM meeting milestones, having their past abilities shown with LittleBigPlanet, and the PS4 not really needing a killer app and so Sony not overly pressuring MM; but this seems like a fully funded passion project from MM, and credit to Sony for funding it for seven years regardless of their working relationship in private with MM.

      @@amnesicpachyderm They dont crunch - there was almost zero publisher pressure. Did it make the game better? No, because they become so damn introspecitive and self congratulatory about certain aspects (like the super rapid asset creation of graphics and sound using just controllers or wands) that they failed to correctly create a logic and programming system that was up to the task.
      They made this amazingly flexible creation system, and shoe-horned the crap programming system from LBP onto it, meaning complex gameplay systems just are not practical. Its an absolute crying shame what they did. Sony would of lost millions, this studio will end up having to make another LBP just to keep afloat.

    For anyone who still doesn't know what Dreams is.. it's basicially an engine in which you can create anything you can possibly imagine with very small limitation.. most of the time it's your own imagniation. So you can create your own games, films, art, music & anything in between and beyond or you can play the stuff that others made and there are some indie worthy titles already after 1 year.. a few people aim for making triple A games! Not a single one should miss out on this masterpiece, especially when you are creative =)
    I do make videos about Dreams if you would like to learn more about it!

      @@V3ntilator That's not true. All too often I've posted a video that's only 8-12 minutes long, and it's stuck at 360p for a good hour or two before the 1080p option is available for viewers. A 2 hour video can take longer, but certainly not only a single hour. You might see shorter times for TH-cam HD processing for your videos because of the bitrate, but more complex video files with a higher bitrate can take longer.

    It'd be cool if they had the option to simply cap the frame-rate at 30 FPS OR allow the dynamic resolution to kick in with priority given to frame-rate over resolution so that a true 60 FPS experience could be had at all times if that's your preference.

    I went to check out this game. It's $40. I can't resist something this charming at a reduced price. Now that we got this game released, there's only one other game that was announced alongside the PS4 that needs to be released: Deep Down. How's that coming along, Capcom?

    • @Nero_PR
      @Nero_PR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not gonna happen. Deep down was being developed with the Panta Rei engine, which was abandoned by Capcom themselves since it's full of bottlenecks (it remembered much of what made FF XV a hassle to develop for Square Enix, they had that Luminous Studio Engine that they decided to abandon after the project).
      Don't get your hopes high. Capcom has a great engine for now, the RE Engine, but I expected their next action game to be Dragon's Dogma 2. Deep Down may never see the light of the day, the same as Silent Hills by Kojima (Konami said something about doing 2 Silent Hill games, but I am not bothering to look up for news).

    The tech for this -game- game engine is pretty revolutionary. It runs completely without polygons or textures. Instead everything is created from what is apparently called SDFs (signed distance fields). These data structures are then rendered to the screen as point clouds. It would be awesome if somebody at DF was knowledgeable enough to explain how it works.

      @@TheGoncas2 that's right!
      The PS5 is built on the same base architecture as the PS4 (x86), meaning it will be compatible. PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 all used different architectures (MIPS/Emotion/Cell/x86), making it more difficult to have plug'n'play BC. Xbox has always operated on x86. Nintendo are the real ones to complain about BC to, since they included an entire Wii inside the Wii U that didn't play GameCube games just because it didn't have GameCube controller ports on the console -_-
      Anyway, the PS5 will be an upgrade, just as the PS4 Pro was, but this time featuring enough new things to call it a new console instead of just a standard upgrade. Like going from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 2080, which gives you ray tracing. The console also ships with an SSD, which is definitely going to move the gaming industry in that way, meaning game sizes will become smaller as they become more efficient, and load times will be drastically reduced because of that. Not only load times but sheer render times, meaning we might be able to have games where we move a lot faster than anything we've seen before. The controller also has some nifty features to it. However, all of this will support playing PS4 games.
      Our only hope is that it actually runs them BETTER than the PS4 does. Since the Pro already has that going for it, I doubt they would remove the option on PS5, and certainly there will be games with advanced updates for the console that take better advantage of its features. I'm picturing Last of Us with ray tracing right now :3

      beardalaxy “Xbox has always operated on X86” Not quite true, although the OG Xbox was indeed X86 (Pentium and Nvidia based), the 360 was actually PowerPC. It’s quite a feat MS got BC working so well on the Day One Xbox One, but then they worked for the future by including specific hardware to help enable it - a shame Sony didn’t think ahead (not that they’ve needed to this gen, mind).
      In addition, though nowhere near confirmed, there’s been reports that Sony’s BC system is simply a down clocking of the PS5 chipset to PS4/Pro levels (which is what the Pro does now). Hopefully not, as that would mean no enhancements over the 4/Pro!
