Although pretty much my entire PS4 library is digital, I'll still be getting the disc version to have the option of picking up cheap games at a thrift shop.
Yeah my ps4 library is the same way bro. I think I only got 6 disc game.
This makes me kinda sad as an older gamer because unfortunately it means you really have no PS4 library what you have is access to a library that can be taken from you at any time. This is why I am adamantly opposed to all digital consoles.

Riaz Still getting standard over digital. Digital games are 50% more $ in the digital store than disc on eBay and Amazon. Also you can sell older games. I’ll make my money back by buying disc first year over digital.

Their products are centered around silicon designed and manufactured by one singular company, they share suppliers, publishers and retail distribution. I sincerely doubt they are unaware of each other’s target MAP and street price.

The same idea I had. During the launch my friends had this exact discussion. We buying the disc so we can share games that we buy even though we all going to buy the game digitally and have it pre-downloaded

Physical discs are cheaper and I usually sell my games after playing it so im gonna buy the one with the disc. Plus it's always good to have an extra 4k disc player
@Anthony here they cost 60 bucks in physical stores while its 70 bucks in the ps store and usually i can sell it for atleast half the price when im done with it so long term it's better for me to buy the ps5 with the disc option
@Anthony In Aus TLOU2 was $69 pretty much everywhere in store on release, and $99 digital. That is a common trend here. There are still more sales on the older games too for physical.

If you want to do Sony a favor and destroy the market for used games even further: get the discless PS5.
If you want to save tons of money during the lifespan of the console then get the one with a disc drive.
Bought ac odyessy gold edition for around 15$ in the ps4 store around a month ago when they had a bunch of sales. Gotta say after dumping 27 hrs so far its def a steal

- The PS5 has 400 times the computing power of a GameCube, 3 times the height, 2 times the power consumption and 0.5 times the noise level.
- Now I clearly understand all the PS5 specs.
The lack of a disc drive also affects the usefulness of a game console as a UHD 4K Blu-ray player. While a digital-only edition is likely the future of all consoles in the next 10-20 years, downloads of 4K movies with current internet speeds (and compressed video encoding) still do not compete with the massive bit rates of optical disc playback.
But who is buying physical movies/tv shows anymore? Have you seen the sale of physical media for movies? It’s dipped lower than physical game sales.

There might be an extra waiting period. I have a funny feeling that Sony is going to prioritize the digital-only. Every digital-only sold will guarantee Sony extra money in the long term.

@@animalm4st3r you are right and wrong at the same time yes digital games are still 45 bucks for the most part but the thing your kinda forgetting is if you buy your disc for 60 and i buy digital for 70 i have 2 game copies and you have one has been that way since ps3 just sharing games makes it worth it imo 2 games for the price of one beats a few cheaper games in the long run

discless won't sell well if sony keeps the prices 20-30% higher in the psn store compared to disc games.
Sony could always lower the prices when theres holidays.
I got the digital yesterday, but I will be a patient gamer. I got a Few PS4 to PS5 free upgrades so I'll be fine ig... I'll hold off and be a patient gamer until they lower the prices.

All I care about as long it stays cool and has less noise, I couldn’t careless where I put it it’s a game console I be looking at the game on my tv not the console.

Why would you not want a disc drive?! Think about 2nd hand games and affordable deals on Amazon you won't ever find on psn store.
There is literally 0 secondhand games i would buy for ps5 since it has no ps3 backwards compatibility. Id understand backwards comp. for xbox because I can buy classic xbox and xbox 360 games but not on ps5. Also my 1X already has 4k blu ray player so.... I also hate having to switch disks whenever I change playing games for which I own physical copies of.

No physical means no need for game shops. I always buy physical wherever I can to support them. Plus you can sell them on
It also means monopoly when there is no used game market, sony and others can put any price they want and less sales ect
oh and physical games eventually end up being cheaper than digital.
I very rarely replay games so like the option of recouping some money for next game purchase plus some games ultimately end up being dissapointing so only losing £5-£10 on those physical games is not so bad.
Plus, with platform holders abandoning digital marketplaces (Xbox, Wii, etc), I always worry that my digital purchase will one day be unavailable to download because the platform was no longer profitable for some suits
And consider the fact that these companies sell digital games for the same price as physical even though it costs them $10 less than going physical.
Cost is too great, all my disc games would go to waste.

I always wait a while before buying games and only ever spend around £10-£20. I've definitely saved a lot of money and even accounting for mail delivery costs (£0 with prime which I have anyway) it's still cheaper.
@@wallacesousuke1433 My experience during the PS3 and PS4 tells me that even if you buy games 1 by 1 with, which would add 1 to 3 EUR in delivery costs each time, you'll be saving A LOT of money really fast, even if you don't buy a lot of games. Digital versions are just typically that much more expensive. And of course, you can sell a physical copy when you're done and recoup some of that initial investment if you find that you won't be wanting to replay that game in the future.
With how many games I typically buy, which is not even that many, I'm confident say I'd save those €200 within 2 years.
Of course I very much doubt the price difference will be that large so...

To me, the Digital Only version is paying less to have less. First good deal on a physical copy you miss will make you repent your decison. Having options is never a bad thing.

It's not diskless though really, it's more so a decision between a physical DRM key or a Digital DRM key because you put that disk in and it only installs 1/10th of the game the rest still has to be downloaded and patched.

I will buy discfull version. I love having games in a physical format. 100 euros over a span of a console mean very little.

gemmy2492 - That does not apply to all games though, but yeah, I get your point. 😂 What I have been doing is waiting on most game purchases and buying at a cheaper price and/or waiting to see if there will be a Complete Edition, Game of the Year Edition, that has all or most content on disk and usually it is well worth the wait.
My disc reader eventually started doing this weird thing where it will eject a disc while I’m playing the game. Not all the time, but it’s super annoying especially on multiplayer games

It is the first step in conditioning the console public into accepting online only (digital) gaming.
If you want to know what that future looks like, simply look at PC gaming now.
No second hand market or ability to pass your games on.
Price drops over time are greatly reduced or No real sales at all. (pretend price drops from some theoretical price, even years later)
Most recently, pc gamers have seen their games lose content...removing music.
Sony were the ones who greatly boasted about Physical disk gaming when Microsoft tried to intoduce this very concept last generation....now they're the ones leading the charge.
Don't fall for it. Its cheaper now, but will cost you all much, much more in the longrun.
@@gregoryroncoli217 digital is fine on PC and absolutely great because it's an open market, if you go digital for PS5 you're stuck with Sony's PSN prices which are a rip off (most countries pay extra for digital versions of $60 USD games, but the US unfairly does not)
Me, while having been digital only on pc for a decade or more, I'm going to choose physical whenever I can so I can resell my games. This especially on consoles where the market is controlled by only one player, as opposed to pc where right now there's more competition than evere.
Well, the discs today arent complete, dlcs and upgrades all the way...so maybe i will get the digital..
I will only get the version with the disc. Just to keep my options open. Not to mention my blu Ray box set collection.

I like collecting and also hate waiting 10 hours for my slow ass internet to download something. And backwards compatibility is a huge plus
Also in my country right now TLOU2 costs 49.95€ in retail while on PS Store it's 69.99€. So, say I was a huge TLOU fan and needed to get the game day 1, I would already lose 20€ if my only option was PS Store. This happens with most games, retail is cheaper, not just with TLOU2.

I held out getting a 4k Blu Ray player for the PS5. Glad I did. A real good 4k player can be 300 or more.
But if it doesnt support Dolby Vision or Atmos then it will be a very crappy UHD bluray player.

I'm really looking forward to see how they're going to handle things like collectors editions which are traditionally only available with a hard disc copy of the game in a fancy steelbox. Are they going to offer two different collectors editions with either a download code or a hard disc or are they going to force you to buy the more expensive console if you want to continue buying collectors editions. I'm a die-hard collector so that could definitely influence my buying decision between normal and digital.

If I bought the PS5, I'll definitely get the disc version to keep my options. There are advantages and disadvantages of buying digital or physical games. Buying physical games is cheaper in the long run since you can resell the game or buy a secondhand game. While buying digital is more convenient but it will be more expensive in the long run because you can't resell the game or buy a secondhand game (but sometimes there are discounts) and you're at the mercy of PS Store.
Right, resell a psychical game and get $10 for it. Definitely not worth it to me.

Physical games are always cheaper in the long run, and will save you a dramatic amount of money long term, not to mention even at launch retailers compete with eachother with game prices, while with digital on console you have no options, its not like PC where you can choose from Steam, Epic Game Store, Gog, Humblebundle etc... PS Store is only competing with itself, so you end up paying $50-70 per game for digital with no competitive pricing, and you don't even own the games either, you pay premium for a license.
Physical is even cheaper than PC gaming aswell, you own the games and can sell them if you dislike them, while you only have 2 hours to get a refund on PS Store.
If a game is removed due to copyright (Amazing Spiderman) you can still play them on disc whenever, because you own the disc. Also because of the rarity, that disc can be sold for a lot of money to collectors.
So long as game retailers stay around, they also have to compete with PS store meaning they can't bump up the price of games in their store if they feel threatened by digital.
There is literally no advantage to digital other than laziness or inability to take good care of discs so theres no reason to hate on physical. If anything you should appreciate the fact that it exists in the first place so you have options, its one of the few advantages consoles still have over PC.
Oh and with discs, so long as backwards compatibility exists, nothing has to be removed from that disc due to licensing issues. For example, GTA Vice City will have songs from the radio removed, due to music licensing, the disc version will retain all of the original assets. With Digital you are essentially being tricked into paying more money for the same product, and thats how Sony make money back from selling the console at a loss, they expect people to not know that physical is cheaper and manipulate people with what you call "convenience tax" which is where a retailer sells something for more money to account for the lack of need to travel or have it delivered.
Digital all day long for me. The convenience factor, plus the fact that the cost is far closer than you might initially think! I have a 100% digital library of PS4 games and I don't buy Blu-ray movies.

As much as I prefer the look of the discless PS5, I'm getting the standard version. I always get better deals on physical copies. I just bought 2K20 for ps4 a week ago for $10 (it was listed at $20 and I had $10 in rewards). The same game is still $60 on the ps store! No thank you. My other theory is that more people will buy the discless version so I'll have a better chance of getting a standard one 👍

While I am with you in general, this is not always the case. Sometimes you can get digital games for dirt cheap. It just depends. Although the moment physical games no longer are an option, I imagine they will pull and Amazon and start charging a lot with very few sales.

Does it have to be 100 less? Probably not, but yes digital is a boom for both ps and Microsoft, not losing circa 40% of the $60 price on retailers and distribution and making the physical disc and boxes.

Why? More people stream movies rather than buy on Blu-ray, and more people are buying into digital over physical every year, so why would those people need a $100 savings to do something they're already doing: not owning physical media?
@@G360LIVEbecause they want everyone to convert to digital. It makes Sony and Microsoft more money even if they lose more on the console. Eventually we will have no consoles and just stream games but that's about 10 years away.
In past I loved to have a physical game collection for to see and for to show, and for to have the feeling to really own this games. But this year I started to prefer digital, because easy to change the game, because I can buy and download the game 24/7, because I don't have to wait for the delivery arrives, and because it don't need any space in the room.
Richard mentions the cost of the hardware of the disc drive but that’s not all that is involved.
If it plays DVDs (which it should) there’s a licensing fee that is involved too. Same goes with Blu-ray movies. Even though Sony owns Blu-ray, there is still a licence required to play movies on the machine. This fee will be included in the extra pricing. Consumers do not just pay for the hardware but any software/licensing that is included, in addition to any losses for Sony due to physical games vs digital games.

Very informative. What you didn't mention though is that a 2 console house only has to buy 1 copy of any game to play on both. That's a big saving.
Sony wants you to buy the digital version, making a higher loss is irrelevant to them, when it means that they have a monopoly on game value and completely destroy the pre-owned market. If you know what's good for you, you'll buy the physical media version.

@@ebo8199 If Sony moves their game market almost entirely to digital sales, it means that people can no longer sell their games when they're done with them, which means if somebody wants to buy a 2 year old Game, it will likely be about the same price as when it first came out. Sony can dictate the price of games because it's their marketplace. Whereas previously, games were sold through hundreds of different retailers, setting a competitive market through trying to outprice eachother, now it will just be "Digital version from Playstation store. Or physical version from Amazon."
Alternatively, you'll buy neither version.

For some reason people swap out the term "game" for "license" and the whole concept of ownership is different now? You own a physical thing you are entitled to certain rights.
Its my understanding that as a throwback to the OG xb1 distribution method MS makes all XB1 discs with individual serial/id numbers and can track the used game sales and usage.

Since Ryan was so emphatic about vernacular using "Value" -- it would make sense to reveal the price when they showcase any PSN/Plus/Now updates and (a big one) the breadth of backwards compatibility support.
Everyone seems to forget that Sony has another event coming in August. It should also be pretty obvious that there are "4 dimensional chess mind games" going on between Sony and Microsoft here.

There are mind games going on, Microsoft and Sony are both trying to make the other commit a faux pas and gain some advantage, at least initially, and console prices being hidden as well as Sony not showing the back of the PS5 are likely just the tip of the iceberg because the rabbit hole probably goes way deeper than that...

ive been buying all digital games for the past 3 years or so for my PS4, and i absolutely love it! it offers a much more convenient gaming experience! no having to get up and change discs to change between games, no risk of damage to your game since its digital, the convenience of buying with the click of a button versus having to either drive to your local retailer or ordering it and waiting for it to arrive. also once you buy the game digital its always attached to your PSN profile so if you delete it and decide you want to re-download it later on, no problem! just re-download it! reselling used discs never gives you much money anyway. as soon as you walk out of your local retailer the value of your disc drops significantly. oh i almost forgot. contrary to popular belief, PS Store has SALES ALL THE TIME! i just bought The Witcher 3 and Tekken 7 for a combined $23 on the PS Store's Days of Play sale! i already had these games on discs but i bought them digital because thats what i much prefer. theres nothing wrong if you prefer physical discs but i honestly think a lot of gamers dont realize how much they'd love all digital if they'd just give it a try! im definitely going Digital Edition!
Tracking 2nd hand game usage is easy as publishers get sales data from retailers and compare that to unique devices that install or receive updates for a game. Also, retailers like EB games provide data to Sony & Microsoft regarding sales of pre-owned games and I imagine similar arrangements exist for other retailers with similar buy-swap-sell operations. I Have long suspected the "day one" patch as conveniently providing data for comparing sales to installs on unique devices.
My worry about the companies having large intakes/exits for their cooling is it makes me think there’ll be larger areas for dust to get in.

I'm hoping the consoles are easy to crack open to clean them out every few months or so. The Series X looks very simple. I'm not sure I can say the same for the PS5 with its unique shape.

I'm that kind of person that has come to kind of hate having collections of DVD or video game cases but I also prefer to hang back and buy games when their popularity has died down and things can be snagged for much cheaper.

I'll take the Physical version mainly because sometimes there are things you can only get with physical versions of games. An example is the small acrylic display and cloth wall scroll in the Fleeting Glory version of Fate/Extella

Yeah, that's why there are two versions. If it wasn't for the people with bad Internet we likely wouldn't have discs in either the Series X or the PS5. Sure, people would be upset. But that wouldn't last long.

Hi speed internet doesn't do much for a playstation. I have 1 gb but download speed (hardwired) is about 45 mb.

@12:06 the all-digital PS5 provides that quantification; they'll be able to read on the online store which type of console -- UHD Disc or Digital -- is buying software, and therefore at what rate digitally between the two types.
This is going to lead to Sony pushing Playstations without disc drives as the years go by. A revision, perhaps a PS5 Pro without any version that carries a disc drive, is exceedingly possible. People are being eased into this, and eventually Sony will turn up the heat.
It's possible that PS6 will be completely digital, which is the dream of both Sony and partners like EA and Ubisoft.
The profit uptick would likely be exponential, and they know that today: eBay, Amazon and other suppliers are huge as far as new and used physical media. Eliminate that, and you have a cornered market where digital sales/price cuts are less prevalent and consumers are more helpless than ever so far as the whims of Sony and other media platforms that will fully control the sale and subscriptions to their software.
As long as they're doing digital sales, and the digital games go down in price as time goes by, i don't see a problem. I've purchased almost all my ps games digitally since PS plus was introduced back on PS3. it's more convenient on many levels - no disc swapping, no installing, no disc noise while playing, shorter load times, you can download it on a different device later on (PSP games on vita, PS classics on PS3/Vita), etc.
*If* they'll start tampering with the price of digital games when the physical copies will die out (no sales/prices not dropping with time), then they'll probably lose me as a client, but that's a big 'if'. As long as there is competition in the form of Steam and MS they can't do something like that.
Would be nice if you purchased the all digital version and your games would see an extra 5-10% discount off the top.

They haven't dropped the cost of digital downloads even when new and used physical copies for games are significantly cheaper. Based on this, I'm guessing the hard-drive version will be substantially more, in an attempt to push more people towards digital.
I think I may go digital when I eventually get my PS5. I've never bothered with reselling games, and my PS4 has been almost exclusively digital. I can attest to the temptations of the PS store. Something is always half-off.
I just got the Sleeping Dogs remaster for less than $5. Very overlooked game, and I wouldn't have gotten it on disc.

I need the drive version, because l have lot of ps4 disc games that l still love to play.
Wouldn´t sony be able to allow people to insert their disks on a ps4 and login into their users on psnow or whatever, validate the game is original, and make the game available to download in the ps5? Only thing necessary would be for sony to know that that specific disk can´t be used anymore by anybody. If there is no way to do that remotely, maybe they can ask people to send them their disks by mail.

I suppose it makes sense. Nobody would have thought a few years back that most cars would be manufactured without a CD player today either.
