  • We've already looked at the 'ready made game' created by Media Molecule for Dreams, but really, this title is all about creating your own games and experiences. Alex Battaglia and Tom Morgan sit down to the discuss their impressions of the process so far, with some technical assistance from Media Molecule itself! And doesn't that English breakfast look tasty...

      iTz Fumbbles Dreams will give people a great taste for logic programming, level design, character design and a whole host of other things. There’s already legit games being made in Dreams of a quality that people would pay money for if it were an indie release. Media Molecule say this is a platform, not a game, because they see the potential down the road. If you had two games side by side, both look great and play the same but one is made in Dreams and one is made in a professional game making suite like Unity, does the player actually care?

      I used to mess around with AMOS and the Shoot em up Construction Kit back in my childhood. That kind of intro does work! When I worked with Sony in 2012 with people close to LBP 1 and 2, so many folk there were blown away by what folk were creating in it. @@AZJayjohn VR is not a waste. The Unreal engine has VR support and those devs that have worked within the system for the creation of their IP have all said it not only feels initiative, but actually felt natural too.
      Even creating a simple sculpture in VR (think building a character/asset etc) was way easier than crafting it on a 2D TV flat panel.
      The great thing about VR and crafting world assets/objects with high detail is how you can interact with said object ie leaning right in close, manipulating it within the 3D environment etc which is something you can obviously do on a TV, but it just feels so much better within a virtual environment, but also has to be experienced to be understood.

    Dream's is a game that will go down in history as something so special and unique that it will stand alone as one if the most important game's to ever have been released. Never in all of my gaming experience have I been given the opportunity to create and share my fantasies and Dream's with so many AWESOME people. The Dream's community is one of the most helpful and sharing that I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. This game as a whole is very unique and if anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort can create some of the most amazing and memorable experiences ever. The game engine may not be prefect but I think it will keep getting better as time goes on and with the upcoming PS5 it will only grow and develop into one of the most creative tool's we as gamers and Dreamers have ever been given. The one feature that I'm most excited for is the VR implementation. I can't only imagine how wonderful that will be. I love Dream's and I'm very appreciation for what Media Molecule has done and will do in the future with Dream's, that have already said they will continue to support this game for another ten years and that in of it's self is remarkable. It's truly a amazing time to be a gamer and a dreamer. Thank's for the video and for sharing your thoughts about Dream's and I hope you will continue supporting Dream's by sharing new ideas and information about it. This game is an incredible achievement. I love every game where users get to build something from their own creativity. One thing I was wondering about: how will the developer cope with all the copyright infringement? Of course lots of players want to recreate real IPs but don't really think about it. And yeah, a framerate counter would be great.

    • @carpetfluff35
      @carpetfluff35 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They have a disclaimer in the game saying basically 'please don't infringe' but as I understand it, at the moment, they're only removing stuff if the owner of said IP requests it. The best test for this will probably be if Nintendo doesn't want all the Mario stuff taken down - a lot of those are using everything that could cause a problem; art, logos and sound effects taken directly from the actual games.

    • @VitorHugoOliveiraSousa
      @VitorHugoOliveiraSousa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't think it's a problem if they don't comercialize the copyright fan creation. It's basically like any social media or TH-cam, fair use applies. I can for example draw Marvel characters or create animations with them, I just can't monetize them.

    • @alexp-de
      @alexp-de 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VitorHugoOliveiraSousa it's not that easy. Stealing content is always a problem. And like it was said before there are things like music and logos directly stolen from the originals. Someone could get the idea that it is a real Nintendo product and companies never like that.

    • @VitorHugoOliveiraSousa
      @VitorHugoOliveiraSousa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@alexp-de I don't believe in intellectual property, there is no "stealing". People building a Mario level here doesn't stop Nintendo of builind Mario games and selling it.
      But that's is not the point, I'm not talking about the ethics and morals. It's a on-line sharing platform, just like TH-cam, Facebook, etc. Facebook can't be sued if I do a painting with the Avengers and put it on my Facebook page. Now if I try to sell that paint on the Facebook marketplace I and them could potentially be sued.
      Fans creations and distribution of copyright content is not a violation of IP laws if the fans aren't getting any money from it. Disney is one of the worse companies in the world when it's about fucking people with IP lawsuits, and yet look how much Star Wars fan movies were created after they acquisition of Lucasfilm.
      Sony may decide to exclude copyright content, and give copyright owners the power to request a content is taken down, anyway to avoid attempts of lawsuit that would be expensive anyway. But neither fans or Sony are infringing copyright laws by doing this "game" and creating free copyright base fan creations.

      There's plenty of game engines on PC. Unreal engine is wonderful and Blender is also. This game obviously does an extremely great job making it fundamental to learn in the tutorials and is made much easier than other game engines, but I think it's good to have a console-only game like this.

    • @daytimesky

      @@24Kev On PC, however, we don't have a whole easy to use environment that also allows players to share assets like this does. Dreams, through its asset-sharing and ease-of-use, almost "democratizes" (for lack of a better word) game development.

    Great rundown on the game, thank you for featuring it!
    One small correction regarding the creation process - you showed the Halo Forge thermometers for object and scene complexity thresholds, but failed to mention that Dreams has a simplified, yet extremely useful thermometer system that shows how many unique and duplicated objects, as well as audio and logic elements the engine is willing to let you upload to the servers. If you don’t come on under the threshold, you can’t save or upload your scene. This helps tremendously in ensuring an at least playable experience across all games.
    I will say that optimization tips and tricks have been a hearty topic of discussion and sharing among the community, particularly on Reddit and TH-cam.

This means that individuals will have a hard time creating big and meaningful experiences. The community will need to form teams and work for weeks or even months to create more flashout things that don't look just like demos and actually as complete games. But I'm sure they will do it. And Sony is known to support niche weird titles like The Last Guardians, even if they don't sell that much. So they can up the value of the platform in such a way that they have a experience for everyone.

    • @VitorHugoOliveiraSousa

      @jvalex18 this won't cost a lot either, they use voxel grids to build the assets and other more mathematical approach to texturing and such. The hole game is like 12GB and most of it probably is audio recording for the tutorials.
      The assets people make won't take much server resources to be stored. The fact that this basically doesn't have loading screens is evidence of that.

    I'd imagine that in the next five to ten years, a major of game design will be transferred to a more intuitive set of tools such as Dreams'. When that happens, the industry's capabilities to create games (both more good games and more bad games :P) will explode, letting more people create amazing experience with a vary degree of visuals and gameplay. A lot of time goes into training and simply navigating the complexity of game design. Of course, some one has to build the engine, but the load on the creatives to learn programming will lessen and lessen.

    2. Media Molecule has been promising PSVR support at some point after release, mentioned as far back as 2017. If that's still on the cards for a future update (I haven't been following them closely) then I'm guessing the toolset will be adapted with limits that allow for 60fps locked.
    3. I guess it's not applicable here because Alex said he was using a dualshock, but good advice anyway. I've seen drift with PSVR and move controllers when there are extra outside light sources. I just close the blinds and/or play at night.

      Read a post from a MM dev yesterday that said of all the new features they're looking at that the VR mode is 'the most cooked' and practically done - although I wonder what they've had to do to get the framerate up (especially on the base machine). I'm actually most interested to use it in the creation modes, because if you can sculpt while basically using your head as the camera that could be really freeing and way less fiddly than it is currently.
