Do you need to repin your 1999 - 2002 Ebay LS swap harness to run a 4.8/5.3.6.0 Vortec?

  • The Ebay / Amazon (and some other BIG name higher priced suppliers, NOT just from China) are selling you a 1999-2002 Vortec 4.8/5.3/6.0 swap harness based on the 1999-2002 F body LS1 schematic and pinouts, NOT the Vortec truck. Do you need to re-pin these harnesses to match the Vortec schematic and pinouts? Should you? This is a video I cut out of another video I made to make it shorter, sorry if it is a little disjointed. In this video I explain why I will always re-pin an LS1 based harness to be used on a Vortec engine and PCM combination. The harness companies will tell you it doesn't matter because it still works and would rather sell a "one size fits all" harness so they can sell fewer part numbers and make more money. What you do is up to you. For even more LS wiring details take a look at my build videos, there are lots of wiring tests and information throughout the builds. Hope this helps!
Overview of my Ebay JY Performance 1999-2002 drive by cable harness and where to move the wires to change the harness from the LS1 to the Vortec design. Please read the description for updates.

Thank you, Sir. After watching less than half of the first of your videos I saw, I subbed. My background is extensive in wiring. 30 + years of experience as a cable splicer for Verizon. If we messed up our wiring, sometimes thousands in one location, people would have to swap homes!! Ha! That said, I learned to build my own harnesses, etc. for all of my previous swaps. Pre-ecms. I am close to 80 and still at it. I now have a Gen 4 4.8 going into one of my old Jeeps. A frame off build as the only way I do them. A whole new world to me. I am looking forward to this. Many guys said, get a standalone harness and go with it. My first thought, nope. I am going to learn how this thing goes together, where every wire goes in the original harness and make it work.
As I said, you make so much sense, plain and simple. Do it right or go home.
    By the way....love the Pup!

That is great, as techs we have the same brain. We need to understand how it works and why, not just slap it together and hope for the best. Good luck with the build and thanks for the sub!

I followed your directions and you absolutely correct. I appreciate the information. I've done several swaps and the simplicity of moving those few wires is worth doing than spending 600-1500 dollars for a new harness

That's why I'm using a factory harness in my swap. I turn wrenches for a living. I know all about serviceability.

I have a fan install video in the 51 Hudson playlist and the 55 Buick playlist. Single speed fan on the 55 and two speed on the 51. If there is not enough detail I will make a dedicated fan video.

Thanks for the knowledge I've recently purchased the eBay 2002-2006 LS1 T56 DBC harness. So the same steps should apply correct? I've owned the harness this past Saturday. The fuse block has 7 fuses 1 10a 1 20a, 5 blue 15a. I need this to work with my truck 5.3L swap, which video is Best one to study? Also I want to use a X20 plug found on E36 bmw chassis to connect as a twist on Power harness! Wire specialty sell this type but crazy overpriced

Compare the wire pinouts of what you have to the factory pinouts on LT1swap dot com. Check every wire to make sure they are in the correct positions, see my other harness videos if needed for more information.

Great video. Can you possibly do a little sample video on repin & confirming that wires are good and going to where there supposed to. Preferably 2003-2007

The 2003 to 2007 harness I used did not need any wires moved because there was no LS1 after 2002, this is specifically for 1999-2002. I have videos on my channel going over both 1999-2002 and 2003-2007 gen 3 ebay harnesses, take a look at my video list and you will find them. I will put links to them in this video description soon.

Great info, went through your whole 99-02 DBC eBay harness video, as I just got one for an OBS truck swap with a 6.0 and 4L80e. I usually buy a wiring schematic through Mitchell 1 diy but do you know of any free resources to get pin locations at the connectors. I see lt1swap has the ECM side but didn’t see connector side. Great info!! Keep up the great work!!

Thanks! I believe some of the truck schematics with the sensor pin outs are also on LT1swap.com, and I also found some full schematics on LS1tech.com. Dig around a bit on the net and you will find them.
