We prefer Lonetta because we fell in love with the movie and the songs we heard on the movie. Aretha doesn't play in the movie and she shouldn't have voiced over the entire album. The movie and vocals were already perfect.

Facts I hate Arethas version we all know she is the queen of soul but this song was not for her. This sing is to sexy for all that soul she has in her voice

The director was in love with Lonette Mckee. He could've given Irene Cara and Dwan Smith a couple of closeup shots, but we don't see their faces anymore during the song after a couple of minutes. The camera was solely on Lonette.
Lonette McKee gave a master class in how facial expression enhances a performance.
Casting Lonette McKee with Tony King was absolute mastery in total step with times.
