She was so fucking insane in this role! It was like she grabbed it with both hands and squeezed every last drop from it. She left everything on the field and didn't hold back.
Lonette McKee should of been nominated for a best supporting Oscar for Sister. Of course, this was the seventies, and the blaxploitation era. The Academy wasn't trying to recognize black actors much in general, let alone in this genre of films. Too bad because Lonette put her foot in this role.
Sometimes I don't like liking her becus she just be like "child I got to move around" but what can she do is appreciate her mother and her mother dearest friend and her sisters and Levi
I wanna whoop Levi's ass err'time I rewatch it. I'm glad they kicked his ass in the remake but other than that, there was no need to remake it. Lonette McKee killed in the role and Aretha killed on the soundtrack (even though I would have preferred that they had released the originals from the movie).
Sister, to Satin was the newest, shiniest toy at that moment. His previous toy didnt even know she was replaced. And when he got her, he played too hard with her and destroyed her. Without any remorse at all.
Saw this movie in the theater when I was 10 years old....and I been in love with Philip Michael Thomas ever since.... he's soooo fine! Especially in Miami Vice.
Curtis Mayfield wrote a great soundtrack for this movie.. I guess he felt that Aretha Franklin could sell his music better than the the girls in Sparkle could..I like Lonette and Irene version better.
Amen to that: Lonette and Irene brought it home. Ironic, since Irene Cara went on to win an Oscar for writing the song "Flashdance." The voices in this were not dubbed, which is what makes it so magical.
I don’t think it was Curtis’ decision. I think the higher ups figured some no name actors would not sell like a big name star’s cover of the songs. In my opinion, they were wrong. I love Aretha, but she can’t touch the energy of the Irene, Lonette, and Phillip.
As stated before Lonette McKee performed her characters vocals in Sparkle. She can also be heard singing in the movies "Round Midnight (How Long Has This Been Going On?) and Cotton Club (Ill Wind). Her first LP "Words and Music," (she wrote the songs) is excellent. Lonette McKee is "real" talent!
The first time I watch this classic movie. I was with my mom and 2 aunties. That was a great night. We all where singing and having a great time.. I miss those days.
Yes, the girls in the second version had more to be happy about. They could have been added characters but not replacements. Jordan Sparks could have had a separate role but not as Sparkle :) Irain personality was developed in the remake of Sparkle, so we would not debate on Irain on part one with part two: Irain roles on both connects; Irain looks a lot different though...
I grew up with this. I saw it for the first time in Camerillo cal. I was at my step aunts home where I sat in the back room and watched this over and over ... I was 9 Thank you.
My favorite movie of all time! Yes, the original Sparkle. I grew up watching this movie on VHS knowing word from word. I love Whitney Houston, but I didn't really care for the remake of Sparkle.
when I was 4 years old I loved this movie to death... when it used to come on TV back in the day it came on Friday, late night... my auntie, god rest her soul, and my Grandma would wake me up to watch it with them..... I'm 34 years old now, and it still impact me like I was 4 years old again.... truly a classic that will stick to me forever
I know this is kind of off the subject, but I think Sista (Lonette McKee) would have done an amazing good as Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues, and DAMN can she rock a Gown!!!!!!!!!
Lonette was sooo pretty!!! I didn't like the remake either but I think it promoted and made the old movie a classic! I'd talk about the movie Sparkle and hardly anyone knew it like umm 🙄😋😂. Giving him somethang he can feellll 💋🎶
I watched this over and over again as a kid. I loved this song this performance was my favorite! I also one of my favorites was when Sparkle sang at sister funeral Precious Lord. THis movie is an ALL TIME GREATEST
OMG, I loved this movie, I loved the music, the original singers. I was so surprised when the soundtrack that came out, it was/is the great Ms Aretha Franklin. Love her, I do,but I just sooooo wanted to hear the voices of the origianal cast. Can not find the movie either, as I was just starting college then and there was no VHS/Beta, nor DVD, then! :-D Thank you for sharing, vouluweb. Ms Irene Cara, what a lovely person!
Lonette McKee. She appeared in many movies (Which Way Is Up, The Cotton Club, The Women of Brewster Place, Jungle Fever, Lift). She is most famous for her role as Sister in Sparkle. Her debut album was entitled Lonette (in 1979 or 1980). Some songs are listed on TH-cam.
This movie was made way before I was born, but I watched so many times as a kid. This was my favorite scene. I loved singing it and doing the arm movements. I don't like remakes at all, but I am looking forward to seeing it when it comes out.
Sparkle is a wonderful movie!! It's a classic, I really don't think there should be a remake because Sparkle is a phenomenon all on it's own. It doesn't need a twenty-first century upgrade. Afterall nothing is like the original!
I was a big Irene Cara fan as a child and saw her and Phillip in this and Aaron loves Angela the year before Sparkle came out. It was real, there was no sugar coating. Infuse it with FINE, beautiful, incredible talent and you had a show! Decades later, I'm invited to a screening of Sparkle at a grammy event and I meet Ms. Jordin, tall and beautiful, but 'awesome' is the sole word in her vocabulary. I cried through all the Whitney parts and understand why she produced it. She loved the move too.
I wish they released this version as a single not that I adore Aretha Franklin’s soulful voice but Lonette’s voice was so sultry and sweet it gives the song a different sound. ♥️
i love this movie!!! had it on dvd and i think my kids lost it!! going look for it this holiday season!!! was sleep and husband was flipping through channels and this song was on i popped up like i had been awake the whole time!!LMBO!!!
i love this movie!!! had it on dvd and i think my kids lost it!! going look for it this holiday season!!! was sleep and husband was flipping through channels and this song was on i popped up like i had been awake tha wholeitme!!LMBO!!!
Even though most people who have seen the remake say the 2012 version is better, the original will always be in the hearts of fans and will NEVER be forgotten.
Lonette McKee, Irene Cara and Dawn Smith.... These sisters tore the screen up when this movie came out! Their gowns were to die for! I couldn't stay out of the theater! And let's not forget the men; Phillip Michael Thomas (Oh, so good looking!) Tony King... (Sweet dark chocolate man! Oooooh!) and Dorian Haywood ( Oh, yes!) AND, a BIG shout out to Mary Alice - Mama! This is a MUST SEE movie!
Always will love the original "Sparkle" so many memories behind the old skool classics, and love the acting of Irene Cara and Lonette McKee and of course the handsome hunk of "Miami Vice" Mr. Phillip Michael Thomas....Whew!!!
Omgosh I love this movie! Nothing will compare to how great ther songs were how beautiful and fine the main characters were and the times back then! I hope they (hollywood) dont screw it up!
Lonette and Irene as well as the other actress did a great job in this movie. I could watch this over and over. I cried at when sparkle died , I wish that part didn't happen.
I just watched Sparkle and I was thinking the EXACT same thing............Lonette doesn't have to act sexy she exudes sexuality.......she's looking at everyone.........and no one at the same time. Not making direct eye contact with anyone. The girl in the latest version was too too over the top
I love this version of Sparkle, but I am looking forward the new version as well. The new version does not take away from the original Sparkle. If anything, it will allow a new generation to see the original movie and learn about this era.
Ladysugarshaft The remake had a better story. But it had none of the feeling the original had. I sometimes wonder how it would have been if it would have been re made when it was supossed to be Aliyah, Monica, I think Raven?
+Tanya Renee It was not that bad but I definitely believed the original characters dedication to the story line. May be a third version with the original characters would be nice :)
I am a fan of the original and I felt that the remake did a great job in adding versatility to the characters.Yes, a lot was changed and I love the idea that Sister did not die. I love that Sparkle and Delores had more of a foundation. Instead of feeling like the film should be called Sister like the original, I felt that the remake deserved to be called Sparkle. Both actresses that played Sister did a phenomenal job. Especially Carmen Ejojo who did not use the original as a reference! 3 stars!
THIS MOVIE CANNOT BE DUPLICATED. THESE GIRLS KILLED IT!❤❤❤
The remake will never touch the original in any catagory
Ty Edney hell no!!!
Ty Edney I told these yougens that! Can't hold a candle to it! This here is a major classic. Soundtrack and all.
Kimmie T yes Indeed
Neverrr
Thank you
Sister was slaying before the word became mainstream. Lonette McKee killed this role.
She was beaten by satin Struthers, and was hooked on cocaine.
Yes!!!!!
Beauty before Halle Baily.
She was so fucking insane in this role! It was like she grabbed it with both hands and squeezed every last drop from it. She left everything on the field and didn't hold back.
Hooked On Ur Love? Whata song!
Lonette Mckee was perfect in this role.. She really was something...
And she from Detroit
@@tujuanberry7279That makes sense.
Lonette McKee should of been nominated for a best supporting Oscar for Sister. Of course, this was the seventies, and the blaxploitation era. The Academy wasn't trying to recognize black actors much in general, let alone in this genre of films. Too bad because Lonette put her foot in this role.
Who can deny the "through the roof" sex appeal of Miss Lonette McKee in this scene and, well, throughout the movie. This is classic 70s r&b.
It is undeniable!
I'm still in love with Sister 40 years later.
Jswines123 me,too
@@kalivariouskatoe7926 me to I love her
Sometimes I don't like liking her becus she just be like "child I got to move around" but what can she do is appreciate her mother and her mother dearest friend and her sisters and Levi
She was gorgeous
I wanna whoop Levi's ass err'time I rewatch it. I'm glad they kicked his ass in the remake but other than that, there was no need to remake it. Lonette McKee killed in the role and Aretha killed on the soundtrack (even though I would have preferred that they had released the originals from the movie).
Lonette looks like a cross between Lena Horne and Alicia Keys! She is resonating through both generations!
Omg shes really does ❤❤
Lonette, back then, would have been perfect to play Lena. 🤩
Yes I agree!
sister in the original sparkle was so beautiful
Very!
Sister, to Satin was the newest, shiniest toy at that moment. His previous toy didnt even know she was replaced. And when he got her, he played too hard with her and destroyed her. Without any remorse at all.
Those were the baddest red dresses that I had EVER seen!!!! This is just some good stuff! It cannot be imitated or recreated!
Curtis Mayfield was a genius!
tremeka wilson All day sista.
Yes, he was! Very underrated.
And, he's from the Chi!
This takes me back.
Lonette McKee was FINE, that girl had it going on back in the days. The kinda girl that sends me
Saw this movie in the theater when I was 10 years old....and I been in love with Philip Michael Thomas ever since.... he's soooo fine! Especially in Miami Vice.
yes lawddd! lol
Omg me too! I remember being a little girl thinking he was the finest man on earth 😂😂😂
Sung this n my School's talent show back n 1976 !!! We tore it up !! the other teams were Jealous ! Lol ............ Those were the good ole Times !!
Curtis Mayfield wrote a great soundtrack for this movie.. I guess he felt that Aretha Franklin could sell his music better than the the girls in Sparkle could..I like Lonette and Irene version better.

💯💯
That's why it didn't make no money. Nothing against Aretha love her to death, but it should have just been the cast sound track
@Darnee' Griffin Totally agree!
This Is My Fav. Song off this movie
The BEST!!!! This FILM DID **NOT** NEED TO BE RE-MADE !!!
the original sparkle is my favorite. I still remember when I first watch this with my dad.
It was far superior to the remake
Agree
The first time I watch this classic movie. I was with my mom and 2 aunties. That was a great night. We all where singing and having a great time.. I miss those days.

They don't need a remake. It's already a classic.
I grew up with this. I saw it for the first time in Camerillo cal. I was at my step aunts home where I sat in the back room and watched this over and over ... I was 9
Thank you.
My favorite movie of all time! Yes, the original Sparkle. I grew up watching this movie on VHS knowing word from word. I love Whitney Houston, but I didn't really care for the remake of Sparkle.
I feel the same way.
Ashlyn D. Most feel that way, so did I. The DVD has the additional soundtrack
The original soundtrack

To me, Lonette McKee will always be Sister. She gave one hell of a performance in my opinion.
I agree leave this alone. It cannot be remade. I love this movie.
Lonette McKee really has a lot of star quality. I love Irene Cara too, but Lonette is the main reason I've watched this movie so many times.

I wish they released this version as a single not that I adore Aretha Franklin’s soulful voice but Lonette’s voice was so sultry and sweet it gives the song a different sound. ♥️

Great movie. Lovely. Lady sparkle. God bless.
It was GREAT... The original always gets me!!! Can't wait to see the NEW one though...
I agree with ya leave this movie alone, I love this movie the way it is.
Famous, beautiful black actress from...well she worked/acted in every decade from the 70's until now. Cult favorite!!...Still working too.
I love this version of Sparkle, but I am looking forward the new version as well. The new version does not take away from the original Sparkle. If anything, it will allow a new generation to see the original movie and learn about this era.
Boy did that remake SUCK! The original remains a Classic :-)

you are so fine baby LADYSUGARSHAFT. WHAT KIND OF SHAFT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT
+Conrad Sutton This original is cute and realistic. They were playing around in the remake. They did not even care about the story line :(
New sparkle disrespectful!!
Lmfaoooooo
it was atrocious 😠 A Masterpiece should never and can never be duplicated!
+Tanya Renee It was not that bad but I definitely believed the original characters dedication to the story line. May be a third version with the original characters would be nice :)
Love this song I wish I could of seen what things were like in this era
.i remember first watching this movie when i was 6 years old. now i'm 18 watching the newer one :) #Classic
I love this movie and the new sparkle
