Stix is really Philip Michael Thomas in his younger years. I can really feel the love between Stix and Sparkle was something deep and special. I love this movie as well.

And it is classic in that the story is unfortunately still relevant today with drug abuse. Each generation of young black enjoy Sparkle still. Sparkle is a classic!

But you're not going to get anyone who knows film to say "Sparkle" is a classic film ("Claudine" is far better). Cult classic, absolutely.
My problem is with people abusing the word "classic", something that's happened post-90s hip-hop where everything popular or proclaimed to be great is automatically a "classic". With cinema, the word "classic" should still mean something. "Psycho" is a classic. "Dog Day Afternoon" is a classic. "Do the Right Thing" is a classic. "Sparkle" is a cult classic.

People of films of various levels of quality are popular: popularity and authentic film classic status are not always correlated.
This movie was fit for a remake, but I hope no one even attempts to remake 'Lady Sings The Blues'. Hollywood if you are listening, leave that one alone.
As for the box office, I can't find any actual numbers, but seeing as the film only cost $750,000 to make (I did find that number), I hope it at least made that much. The film's writer, Joel Schumacher, says that the film was "not a wild success, but has become a huge cult movie."
