I once read that there was deleted scene with Stix/Levi/Sparkle/Delores waiting impatiently for a late Sister to arrive at the hall, and she finally arrives dressed differently than everyone else. I was disappointed when Sparkle was finally released on DVD, but didn't include any bonuses (cast interviews, deleted scenes, etc).

Boogie Down Bronx I was a male dancer here in NYC. So I know how challenging it is to project masculinity at times. An issue that people might take offense at these days. But I remember being careful of what I would and would not do. Again I'm not hating on him, however in ballet men and women almost never do the same moves. I guess that is why his dancing grabbed my attention.
Yes they messed this movie up badly. A total waste. Aaliyah was originally supposed to be in the remake as Sparkle it was severely delayed after she died and I know she wouldn't have tolerated how they messed up the movie.

As I recall, it just didn't make sense. The expectation was for the " original motion picture soundtrack." We were leery of 'stars' overstepping their bounds and taking the material of others. As with Diana Ross replacing Stephanie Mills in the Wiz movie. It was so, so disastrous and so, so regrettable . It would've been better with Lena Horne as Dorothy. Similarly, Aretha's album went nowhere.

Lonette McKee is magic in this film! The entire cast is very good but her performance is just exceptional. Dwan Smith and Irene Cara give lovely performances and are cute as buttons The Star quality McKee exudes is just mesmerizing. Why Hollywood did not make better use of this extraordinary Singer /Actress is one of the great mysteries. Thank God for the work she did do and The Lp's she recorded and the Stage Shows and Concert Gigs she did .Miss McKee worked she was too talented and magnetic not to get work but Good Lord that Halle Berry who is not half the Actress McKee is became huge and won an Oscar and Lonette Mckee never got her propers is disgraceful!
Sister is all but THROWING it into the audience. When I want a pickup, I watch this scene. It's funny, sexy and all-out riotous. This was a GREAT scene from one of the earlier Classic Black movies. Too bad it's not better known outside of Black audiences.

The filming style is what made this movie stand out to me ever since the first time I saw it years ago. The camera slowly passing behind the crowd's heads so we could see glimpses of the stage- brilliant. Love the "darkness" of the film too, visually. I only saw bits and pieces of the remake, but it was definitely much more colorful and polished looking, which totally changes the feel, and in this case not for the better.
I love the 3 women on the right when Sister is enticing the old man after the song. The girl in the middle jumps out of her chair laughing when Levi pulls Sister off the stage.
