For those from the younger generation, u gotta understand, Mary Blige was alright, but Mabel King is the EFFIN QUEEN of this song from the wiz. King owned it like nobody's business.

My husband and I attended the Wiz Musical last week (1/13/2024). At the Civic Center in San Diego , CA. The production was fabulous. They gave us a bonus. Wayne Brady played the Wiz. He worked out for that character. Wayne was all across that stage with his footwork. He broke out and did the Roger Rabbit. I might lose some of the audience here. He had a black and white stripe old school Adidas jogging suit. He dance like he was a third of his age. He is extremely gifted entertainer. Wayne Good job performing the wizard.
Oh, yes, Wayne Brady is talented and keeps a low profile. Brilliant performer.

If only she was in more of _The Wiz: Live_ like The Wicked Witch Of The West was in the MGM _Wizard Of Oz._
Honestly, this was the perfect cast! Everyone delivered more than they needed to and it was SPECTACULAR!

@@rogue7723 When Charlie Smalls created _The Wiz_ in the first place, he went back to L. Frank Baum's 1900 book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and based his script on that. The Wicked Witch of the West only appears in one chapter in the middle of the book.
In the stage version, after the Wiz flies away in his balloon, Dorothy and the lads have to travel south to meet Glinda. In both this show and the movie version of _The Wiz,_ they rather lazily took the MGM route and had Dorothy go home from the Emerald City.
The only thing this musical was missing was a live audience. The Wiz was definitely one of the best televised stage productions. The cast did a great job the whole show.

I'm a Beta, VHS, DVD, sing-along CD, AND MP3 owner of the movie version!😂. I mean yes, nobody can touch Mabel's version (that I've heard) but, Mary did a stupendous job! She may not have gotten her Oscar yet but, she could easily slide over to Broadway to collect her Tony.

I mean Jay-Z got in on his very first try, and the Go-Go's only released four albums in their career (and only three of them when they were relevant). At first when I saw this I was scared to listen to it. I'm a big fan of Mary but I'm also a big fan of this movie. And I am actually glad I took the courage to listen. She did a darn good job!
I didn't think she would do this song justice, but she did and gave it absolutely an up to date feel for this song. Great job on this performance.
Mary looks gorgeous! Her makeup is flawless.
And this of course led to _Mudbound_ and the rest is history. I remember when it premiered a whole generation didn't know _The Wiz_ was an all black cast.

This one really grew on me a lot. Mabel King is the undisputed champion of this song, but Ms. Blige sings it like she was training for it all her life. Both versions are excellent.

@@colorpurplelover8571 I didn't particularly remember liking Mary's performance, but watching it again here on TH-cam, I agree, she was great here. I still have it recorded on my dvr from when it aired live, and I'm curious as to whether they switched the performance after it aired. I'm anxious to watch it again, and check that out. Fox did that with their Rent Live. The performance from Angel was embarrassingly bad, and if you watch it on TH-cam now, all of a sudden he's singing most of the notes. Lol. Fyi., for those that don't know, the late great Mabel King was the original Evileene...not just in the movie, but ALSO in that "something that came way before it," the Broadway Show (but not really "way before," just 3 years).
