The Black Templar do follow the Codex Astartes to an extent, they just loophole the restriction on chapter size by constantly being on Crusade. Now Space Wolves, they don’t follow the Codex at all.
Yeah but still, in order to be a legion, they would need to be 10,000 strong and be led by a Primarch, and Black Templars, as a *Chapter,* just break the 1,000 strong rule for chapters... so they're still just a Chapter, but they went over the manpower limit. Another reason they *can't* be a legion, is that they are *not* part of the first founding. They are one of the chapters formed out of the Imperial Fists, therefore according to the lore, they're literally a chapter.
I’m so glad that they gave Helbrecht a helmet, because I have always thought his crown or circlet or tiara looked super lame. It looked like he was wearing those old prescription sports glasses, “Rec Specs”. It was honestly the reason I never bought the old model.
GW knocked it out of the park with the BT models. Especially the Character Models. BT was my first 'proper' marine army when the 4th(?) Ed range was created, so I've always been a fan
I agree, I was collecting black Templars before this stuff came out, but I really hated the new Primaris because they were super bland and meh, but when this came out I fell in love and started even collecting primaris, because with the new sprues and parts from Crusader Squads they look great
I've got say: That new champion is mogged by one of the ordinary marines in the Templar squad, who looks far better and more fitting than the actual model itself.
One of my favorite things is videos of people talking about their obsessions. It’s so fun watching people be so happy and wanting to share the thing they love so much.
With so many primaries kits looking way too clean and tacticool, BT stands out having made the transition with the grimdark aesthetic entirely intact. Might have to start a BT collection at this point. 🤔
If you liked the skull shoulder pads from the castellan, Grey tide studio just did a STL Kickstarter that has versions of these, I'm planning on converting a whole bunch of reivers with skull shoulderpads.
Just checked them out, they have some cool StLs for sure. Collecting necron's atm though so doubt the shouldr pads will fit hahaha. When I get round to Black Templars I'll give them a go, thx bud.
I love that most of our chapter specific models are integral parts of the army. Like Helbrecht and Grimmy are both top tier HQ picks and lots of folks are building armies around big blobs of crusaders. Please let give Sword Brethren another wound or unlock their wargear selections!
Hey Jay. Just wanted to give you a huge thanks. Im 32 and literally just started dipping my toes in 40K. I'm sure you can understand that starting hhis hobby from scratch is A LOT to take in all at once, but your enthusiasm about the hobby really made it seem like so much fun that I had to try it out for myself (Not one regret ever since). I haven't tried tabletop just yet, although I did drop in my local hobby shop and they invited me to a "40K day" event they do there so I can sort of learn as I watch, I do hope to do it sooner than later. Love your videos and kep up the good work man.
Thank you for this video. I've just gotten into the hobby, and chosen Black Templars as my Army (as I like the colour scheme). But for a while I've been questioning whether or not that was the right decision, but after watching this video of pure appreciation for the Templars, its made me appreciate them more, and be happier with my choice.
You are incredibly correct about the army box. There’s 3 rotting on the shelf at my friendly local game store. They’ve been there for possibly a year now.
Tell them they should price match it with Amazon regardless of what GW states. Because $97-99 for that thing was 100% worth it. Those would be gone in no time if they did.
@@84jesterx fun fact, you can void your contract with games workshop if you undercut their prices without permission from your regional rep - at which point they refuse to deal with your business again. My ex partner used to own a hobby store.
Love me some Black Templars, even have the new box set and a bunch of firstborn, but painting black power armor over and over and over is a special kind of torture...
I enjoyed this video a lot. I'm not a templar player myself but I have fond memories of these old metal templar models from back in the day so it's very nostalgic to see these reimagined.
Just now getting in to trying my hand at 40k after getting caught up and interested in the lore. Funnily enough after research and videos I chose Black Templars and have a combat squad on the way -- Enjoying all the good info, looking forward to digging through more as I figure all this out.
I just got some 5 templars second hand and unbuilt at my local game shop the other day. First minis I'm ever gluing together so should be weird to experiment with them. Thanks for sharing!
Have you looked at Archie’s Forge? He makes some amazing 3D printed bits. His Templar bits are badass! All high quality prints, come cleaned and ready to go. I highly suggest all Templar fans go check it out.
I've painted figures when I was a kid (DnD) just started with WH40k and just finished my first Black Templar marshal... I was happy with it until i watched this video and realized I will never be this good... these are all amazing!!
I like Space Marines with unique flavour...I ended up with Leviathan leftovers when my son wanted the nids. I have Space Wolves from many years of collecting, & as it is all smaller, I decided to embrace Black Templars for all the new models.
Ive been a big fan of 40 k Lore for years, but only recently got into painting and playing - I was sucked in by the Black Templars. They are pretty bad ass. I have Hellbrecht and hes an amazing mini.
Always loved the look of Black Templars… I’ve had a mostly compete, but I assembled backlog of them for quite a while… it’s a shame I will likely never really use the models I have, because these Primaris versions are so much better! This new scale just feels so much better, and I’m starting to wonder what I will do with all my old Space Marines… luckily most of mine were Chaos, which have always been larger, and have only been getting better with each new release.
Hey man, great video. The Black Templars army box was actually my first 40k purchase and it's been a slippery slope since. I got interested in the game like 15 years ago while in HS and wanted to start a BT army, however, once my dad drove me to the game shop and I saw the prices I had to postpone that hobby. I took the plunge a few months ago and have really enjoyed watching your channel; keep up the good work.
I'm glad you explained the Emperor's Champion lore. Its great lore and makes me want to field one now. A guy drunk on being the chosen one to extol the emperor's wrath is so amusing i must do it.
i remember the forgeworld black templar dreadnoughts was sick af and was one of the reasons why it was my first army but i never had money to buy them. Was quite sad when they were removed from the catalogue.
the reason for the extra scope is so you've ones for different ranges, since optics usually don't have variable zooms, and if they do, they are still limited. You might just want a X1 red dot, and sometimes a x16.
The new Black Templars are just beautiful, and that upgrade/relic sprue is fascinating. I’m really hoping the Space Wolves get that same doodad treatment.
In December, I grabbed the army box at my lgs, on Christmas eve morning my dad had collapsed due to a heart condition so everyone drove to the city to spend Christmas with him, while there I caved and grabbed the Combat Patrol, Helbrect and two boxes of sword brethren. I caved hard when it came to them and not gonna lie, I like the Black Templars more then the adaptability of my Ultramarines so for once my stress shopping kinda payed off. It was also convenient a month later I got covid and painted the entire collection over those two weeks
Wish I saw this sooner. Got the expansion along with the combat patrol. While I got other marines to use the expansion on, just wish I knew that the combat patrol came with it. Oh well. Love the review.
I believe it is already been said, but they do indeed follow the codex, but thanks to a tecnicism, they can have a large number of marines, because the codex stats that during a crusade, the limitation doesn't apply, and since it's founding, the dark templars have been on an eternal crusade
the two specific things I liked about the templar release was 1. The castellan and how even more specifically with how his fingers are placed on the axe; very artistic and wonderful. 2. I am now fully ready for gw to retire the 1st born marine range. Like Jay said I think releasing a couple more sets for chapter specific units would be perfect. Then at the same time they could retire a bunch of old units and redundant products to get rid of all that unit bloat marines have. And with 30k having revived support there is precedent to keep the style of tactical marines around. Maybe an anniversary rerelease of tacticals in the updated scale could happen in 10th ed?
It does contain the Templar specific codex. You still need to source the rules for the standard space marine units (and other generic marine rules they can use). It’s a super solid deal. I bought a second army box at that price because it was still cheaper than the redemptor and crusaders I wanted. So I do have a new in shrink codex Templar available for someone at some point.
8:30 I love the guy carrying the large stone bit, I'm guessing they were taking inspiration from the story of Jesus' crucifixion from the Bible; the way the piece is shaped looks somewhat like a cross, and the way he is carrying it seems akin to how Simon carried Jesus' cross, it looks similar to how that scene is usually drawn
Hey Jay hey Nick! I'm a huge fan of your channel 👍 I got a wish, it would be nice if you guys could some day do an episode about the working place: which chair/table do you use (to avoid backpain?), What kind of light, but also tue equipment etc. Just a little look behind the scenes :) would appreciate it a lot:)
FYI: when the Marines are saying "just another bug hunt" they're actually using older military slang for a simple mission (ei: stepping on insects is too easy), and considering they had never encountered xenomorphs, they were definitely not referring to them as bugs. In much of the expanded universe of comics and novels however, the term was misinterpreted as referring to the xenomorphs, so it caught on as such... but in *none* of the original films do they ever call a xenomorph a bug. Which brings me to my next point: Tyranids are biopunk space dinosaurs, and literally have been since they got a cohesive look during their range-refresh in 3rd edition 40k. Insects do not possess teeth, hooves, tails, or endoskeletons. Also, bugs are insects with a proboscis for mouthparts (just part of their taxonomy), so literally most things people call bugs, are in fact, *not* bugs... especially Tyranids though, since they don't even have 3-segmented bodies.
In 40k's 1st and 2nd editions lightning claws had stats that were like power fists, but better. They changed into something else in 3rd edition or later.
I really should get this set . I'm a Dark Amgels player but I've always felt like Black Templars stole a lot of our thunder when Dark Angels lost their black power armour and became green . The Deathwing still had their bone colour armour tho but I've always felt like Black Templars were Dark Angels by another name. Basically when payday comes I'm getting these suckas . 😁😀🤗🤩😈👿👽
I've always loved the Black Templars. Space Marines and zealotry and gothic-ness and swords, candles and big old dusty tomes. The definition of grimdark. The first run was awesome, but the newer models and add-ons are STELLAR. And I LOVED the old BT kitbash box. I REALLY want to get a marshal to add to my Deathwatch Models, but I'm not sure my 'bashing fu is up to getting a DW shoulder pauldron onto the kit's pose... Maybe I'll scrape the existing pauldron and add a 3rd party DW icon? We shall see!
Sometimes it's just neat that we get the same models but better, I do prefer that new Grimaldus retinue - also that the banner still had the two rolls of toilet paper on the sides! Now if I could get newer versions of the Necron finecast HQs and C'tan, I'd be just dandy.
Space marine armour is basically American football Padding on top with Cricket pads for the legs. Check out Dangermouse if you want to know the true origins of the white scars. He's the OG British Beaky
I’m doing a 30k imperial fist army and a 40K black Templar army but painting them black and a few yellow pieces so I can run as fists or Templars except the chapter specific models of course. :)
I really hope DA get the same treatment as BT during next edition like rumors say. Maybe even some BA? Becauae BT is the best looking chapter at the moment.
I grabbed all these and then discovered I like the HH more so beyond some Rhinos and Land Raiders I had already built, my BT Army is still in box lol... One of these days I'll build them all.
I just pulled the trigger on 3 teams of Imperial Nobility and gonna convert my first Battalion of Astra Militarum. Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it, I think.
I wish gw had more legion specific models cus I mean salamanders just had a kit and then 2 models basically I would love if outta nowhere we got some primaris fire drakes or pyroclast and then maybe it could be legion specific or not but the sheild bois for imperial fist would be cool
If/When Rogal Dorn comes back in the lore and Gathers all the Imperial Fists successors back into one Legion with the Last Wall Protocol, he's gonna have 2 Legions worth of dudes thanks to The Templars.
I got an army box a few months ago for $100 to start my Black Templars. Been thinking about getting another cause I need another Crusader Squad and Redemptor Dreadnought. Also been thinking about kit bashing some Initiates into a Grey Knights kill team.
The thing about new Emperor’s Champion is that, in my opinion, he looks as if he just got out of a dancing movie from the early 2000s, like Step Up or something. I mean, armour wise anyway, those leg greaves looks like those baggy sweatpants worn by dancers and the chest piece has a crop top feel to it. And that tabard/cloth makes it look like there’s no armour in between the armoured legs and a crop topped chest 😂
The second pistol optic would be if one was magnified and one unmagnified. The magnified optic would be on top, and the 1x optic offset. I've only seen this on rifles, not on handguns. Anyway, carry on.
Space marines tend to make their pistols big enough to be stock-less rifles so I think I can let that slide in the 41st millennium, but otherwise I agree. I will say I’ve seen backup irons in case the battery dies/unit dies but then they tend to be inline with the red dot not offset
@@timunderbakke8756 Yeah, the classic bolter is a big stockless rifle. Who needs a stock when you have power armor? Same for plasma pistols, I guess. The one thing I really like about the space marines is how absolutely over the top they are, just gonzo crazy. Every rifle is a grenade launcher. Jetpacks with engines the size of small cars. And still their APCs are so small they'd only fit about two guys in the back (looking at you, rhino).
Man, when I was choosing which chapter I wanted it was between Templars and Dangles... I chose Dangles, but I can totally see all of the unique Templar models being a lender into the Dangles. I already bought Grimaldus for painting challenge, so that's a start. They are all gorgeous models, shame they don't have a vehicle, but maybe that's part of the lore? I dunno, I'm a Dangles guy I dunno Templars lore... aren't they a 'fleet' 'chapter'?
They are a successor chapter of the Imperial Fists legion and chapter, but they are obsessed with melee combat and unyielding faith in the Emperor of Man as a literal true God.
@@agollumcalledgandalf Oh thanks, yeah... I s'pose I should have been more specific and said I'd love some really unique or wacky vehicle... like the unique speeders for Dangles.
The Black Templar Army set on Ebay for $98 is the best way to start a Black Templar army, Bought 2 boxes, painted up the extra Emperors Champion and Marshal and resold them back onto ebay to get my money back for one of the boxes.
Hello Eon and all you guys, i just did a 1000 miles round trip to buy my first warhammer box and i also bought all the paint and accessories😅 lets say it was an expensive trip but i wanted to buy my first box in person! Im asking what are the best warhammer 40k about black templar? I really want to read them all! Thank you for sharing the name of the books you liked! Eon i love your channel keep it up!
I like the aesthetics of the new Emperor's champion but I have to agree he is pretty plain. When I get round to them after collecting Necrons I think I will kitbash a really nice Emperor's Champion. I think the new one need's more purity seals or a cape or something to make him stand out a bit more. Excited to get a few in the future.
Codex? Those are guidelines rather than rules. Welcome to the Eternal Crusade. Love the Templars. They are my loyal space marines of choice as well. New Helbrecht leads my forces to battle.
Usually the reason for an offset scope on real guns is that they're at different magnifications, so if you're in close you can just angle the gun and have a sight with no magnification.
You do that with reflexes and red dots, not magnified optics. No one’s putting a 2x-4x+ on a 45* rail. With a flip to side mount, it’s not even the optic, it’s just the magnifier.
Jay, wasn't Sigismund called the first Captain? If anyone would know u would... was his title changed. I noticed that the old emps champ didn't have a chained weapon.
Stunning figures, my only issue is helbrecht , he has to show up on any battle field with his sword stuck in an ork..... really hate that on any figure.
I have the Black Templar Army set am I better to get a second set to get to a 1000pts or should I buy the Black Templar Combat Patrol box to add to my army
pretty sure the "gas mask" is just the bottom half of the helmet, some of the marine models imply that space marine helmets are removed in two parts, the top half covering the scalp, and the front half covering the face
Question: which Space Marine chapter should get a whole like similar to Ultramarines, BTs, BA, DAs etc.? I think Salamanders or White Scars would be great!
The Black Templar do follow the Codex Astartes to an extent, they just loophole the restriction on chapter size by constantly being on Crusade. Now Space Wolves, they don’t follow the Codex at all.
They don’t follow almost anything about the Codex. Since Sigismund every Marshall fight his own crusade with his own tactics and structure.
True, there is 1 similarity. They are space marines but that is almost where it ends 😆
Except we don’t
Space wolves don't follow the code of basic hygiene nevermind the Codex Astartes though lmao.
Yeah but still, in order to be a legion, they would need to be 10,000 strong and be led by a Primarch, and Black Templars, as a *Chapter,* just break the 1,000 strong rule for chapters... so they're still just a Chapter, but they went over the manpower limit.

Loving the fan boy perspective
Sometimes it's just neat that we get the same models but better, I do prefer that new Grimaldus retinue - also that the banner still had the two rolls of toilet paper on the sides!
Now if I could get newer versions of the Necron finecast HQs and C'tan, I'd be just dandy.
I'm ngl the black templars look badass as hell
Grimaldus' retinue looks like three Cenobites following him around. It's awesome
I customized the old emperors champion model to hold a banner I freehanded. It got onto the warhammer painting on twitch
Damn Black Templars are so cool! I would totally build an army but I absolutely detest painting black armor. Maybe one day. Great video EoB
I don't know that much about Imperial minis but isn't there a Repulsor (?) tank in the BT combat patrol?
Edit: yeah it's in the video too
@@agollumcalledgandalf Oh thanks, yeah...
As a Dark Angels Player I’d still buy the BT Combat patrol cuz Bits and stuff and the impulsor i think it was
The other day I scored the black Templar army box for 97 bucks on Amazon. I would recommend that if you want to get a bunch of those models
Bought a lot of these for my custom chapter. A lot of kitbashing but worth it.
I was lucky, I came across the BT army box on sale at 40% off. Then grabbbed the combat patrol at a discount as well.
Hearing you say that Blood Angels can get new models/new box makes me excited.
My entire space marine side of the Dark Imperium is unpainted because I can't pick a chapter. Starting to lean more towards Dark Angels. =)
I like the old emperors champion the chain across the chest looks cool as
When I bought the army set, GW sent me an extra box by mistake. I haven't opened it yet.
Damn.. a rare case of GW actually being generous lol
Jay, love the passion that you have for this faction and model range but please start pronouncing the "S" at the end of Black Templars :D
As some new to the hobby i can’t believe those old models. The legs man what where they thinking 😂😂😂
Good templar models. I just started again the minutiare hobby. :)
Wish they had a range of praetorian imperial guard they were great when I was growing up collecting
The older Emperors champion sword was massive. About the full length of the Marine. Really my only complaint about the new one.
The marshal has a normal shoulder pad and a cataphractii terminator shoulder pad
I have an emperors champion and it is so cool
Are you going to do a paint up episode of these ?
I hope Salamanders get the same kind of love in the coming years 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have the Black Templar Army set am I better to get a second set to get to a 1000pts or should I buy the Black Templar Combat Patrol box to add to my army
pretty sure the "gas mask" is just the bottom half of the helmet, some of the marine models imply that space marine helmets are removed in two parts, the top half covering the scalp, and the front half covering the face
Question: which Space Marine chapter should get a whole like similar to Ultramarines, BTs, BA, DAs etc.? I think Salamanders or White Scars would be great!
I used Helbrecht as a conversion of my chapter master.
EOB: it's good that Kitbashing isn't official policy for my marines
Me: Crying with my 8e Imperial Guard codex
