Sanguinius is also posed like Michael the Archangel in a painting titled “The Archangel Michael defeating Satan” so that’s where the pose comes from

    • @lucidnonsenseable
      @lucidnonsenseable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

I believe Guido Reni's Michael is the inspiration but there's more than enough renaissance art that they drew from. The thing is it seems like they forgot they were making a model and not a painting, so it looks OK from one angle but all of the foreshortening in the art makes the pose look super awkward when you can move around it. That said it does look better with the spear instead of the sword.

    • @Sinewmire
      @Sinewmire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yeah, clearly inspired by the cover of Fear To Tread (presumably the same inspiration) but I feel like the way the legs are posed makes him look like he's sitting and this, coupled with the butt rock, really throws the motion of the miniature off. It's a shame, I'm a Blood Angels player since the early 90s, but I've never felt the need to own this.

The Leman Russ running pose is a similar situation to Sanguinis; There was a scenic base that both the Leman Russ and Magnus the Red Primarch models fit into to yield a Primarch battle diorama. • @demon1103

Funny thing about what you said with them in combat. That's actually an issue a lot of the Primarchs have. They tend to be so adamant about being up front and center in battle, The idea of they are Warriors first and foremost. In "Galaxy in Flames" there's a moment where Horus is PISSED at Angron because instead of bombing the planet from orbit, Angron charges headfirst into his enemies, causing multiple unnecessary deaths and a massive delay. Hell, if they were more like you said, Ferrus Manus would probably still be alive XD.
edit: OMG almost forgot...that's literally what led to the whole Heresy to begin with. Instead of Horus just sending someone to deal with a traitor, he's adamant on being The One to deal with it personally and almost dies.

My take is that the Primarchs’ models should be indicative of who they really are as individuals rather than the statuesque portraits that the remembrancers sketch when they very clearly have never set eyes on them. GW did a really good job with them but as a Raven Guard player myself, I especially love Corax’s model since it captures all the rage and angst he has felt since the Drop Site Massacre or prabably even before that, since Horus was the one to order his very clearly stealthy marines to go into a frontal assault and get cut down in the process. Those two events together effectively cut the 19th Legion down to a quarter of what it had been, forcing them to adapt their strategy to night time raids on traitor supply line disruptions, guerilla warfare and assassinations.
If Corax does return in 40k, I expect he’ll have an even more shadowy appearance, standing on top of a pile of dead Word Bearers, eyes glowing crimson and ready to pounce on all traitors and tyrants.

  • @anniebae7049
    @anniebae7049 2 ปีที่แล้ว +52

Bit of a long comment, sorry-
Alpharius is currently the only one I own, and it really is a joy to paint every individual scale. The thing with alpharius though is that any one person in the army you're fighting against could be alpharius. Even his special rule has you pick a specific squad to add alpharius to as a model and if your opponent doesn't guess in time a random tactical marine is just going to come up and blender their entire forces because you didn't expect a primarch to be in there.
His lore is also fun, in that Alpharius and Omegon are TWIN primarchs, and Omegon is the 'face' of the legion, taking on alpharius' name while alpharius gets stuck in and does things himself. Alpharius and Omegon are also shorter than the rest of their brothers, which helps them blend into their legion better.
Also they have a bit of a dark angels thing with the heresy. Alpharius wanted to stay loyal, while Omegon wanted to side with horus because he was given a vision that if the emperor was to win the war exactly what happened leading up to 40k would have happened, whereas is horus one the war he would have gone mad with grief and snuffed out humanity, starving the chaos gods to be weakened forever. Alpharius didn't trust the vision and wanted to stay with the emperor, and the two fighting primarchs wound up with the Alpha Legion *siding* with horus, but basically sabatoging the traitor's plans with basically everything they did. Omegon was the one to die to dorn and it made alpharius grieve greatly, and he and his legion left the traitor's and disappeared only to "die" (no body recovered, no proof etc) to some ultramarines during a blizzard.
He hasn't been heard of since, but in general his legion was opposed to chaos in the time of the heresy, and was siding with the traitors because it would 'lead to the destruction of chaos in the end'
basically all alpha legion in current 40k are roaming warbands led by a traitor captain or a traitor chaos lord, and has nothing to do with any possible overall hierarchy within the alpha legion. They're a really cool faction in 30k and 40k and its so demoralizing that so many people only see them as memes.
    tl;dr: alpha legion cool.

The issue with Sanguinius' model is that it was designed with its scenic base in mind (that was limited edition) , more so than to work as a standalone miniature (what is pictured in the video) .
And without the scenic base , the pose is missing crucial context because his hand is resting in the air and he's swooping down for no reason , where he should be resting on a beaten daemon , about to deliver the final blow .
Also , the model looks better with the Spear of Telesto , giving him a more traditional angelic vibe as his pose mirrors that of the depictions of Saint Michael slaying the Devil/Dragon .

Maybe if he was sort of mounted on a war wolf with a just gigantic flat edge blade power sword, would really sell what he’s all about, his armor splattered with blood and maybe a few heads hanging from his belt as war trophies to really sell his outright savagery but also to sell his whole executioner vibe. It could also to help sell how imposing a primarch can really be. Man I wish I could draw cause that sounds like it would turn out to be an amazing piece with the soft glow of his power sword reflecting off of the blood on his armor, as he’s about to bring it down on the neck of the enemies of the emperor splattering some snow with fresh crimson.

Hi mate, I have to agree on a lot of what you said. However, Vulcan, Horus, Perturabo are in terminator armour the rest are in mastercrafted artificer armor. Usually I really love your video I’m kinda sad because you missed a lot of the information on each primarch, like Horus talon wich is a power claw not a power fist. Also Konrad Cruze is a jump infantry model that is why he is like that.
And also you spotted the problem with the Khan without addressing it: his face Jagathai Khan is supposed to be Asian and he does NOT look Asian. I would have loved if you would have done more research on the lore of each primarch before talking about them.
Like about Ferrus, his arm are not turning into metal it’s because he plunge some silver serpent under lava to kill it and the molten silver was mixtes with his flesh. Also I don’t know if you know this but Perturabo hammer is in fact the hammer of ferrus manus :forgebreaker (forged by fulgrim) perturabo got it after ferrus death.
Then there is sanguinius and ooo boy I think you missed judged him. In Christianity there is the arch angel Michael who is the angel fighting deamons. And Lotssssss of paintings show him exactly in sanguinius position striking a deamon underneath him. By your standards you should like him he is the exact despiction of an angel in icons.
Also The lion is using a « close right guard » wich is a position in sword fighting. He his about to do a strike from His guarded position. Has much as I love the Lion miniatures I sadly have to agree with you on the base he should be centered

    Okay..
    1) If reviewing something as important as an official Primarch model, it would be good to show all versions of it,"The Lion" has a helmeted option and a power blade which you did not show.
As someone with all of the ones out, i have converted most of the dead marines into models i can use as praetors. All sword wielding poses can be imagined as holding a bat in some form of swing if we try hard enough. There are primaris Black templars with their chosen swordsman holding his sword like a sign at a protest......
    2) The 2nd primarch cannot be female,(even with its uncertainty in lore...at first glance) as testosterone (you know the thing found in abundance in the vast majority of soldiers) was fundamental in their creation, also the Emps would hardly kill a primarch just because it was a female, he designed and had overall control of how they were made and then their essence was filled with unknown warp gods, thirdly ....its around a 50/50 chance a normal child will be either sex and there are 18 male primarchs we know off.....that means they were designed that way. The Emps have sisters of silence ...hes not some woman hater who would exterminate a female primarch because of her sex.
3)Fulgrim is just as off center as the Lion and is wearing primarch artificer power armour
    4)Pert again off center
    5)Jaghati ...agree
    6)Russ ...agree
    7)Dorn ...agree
    8)Konrad....again in power armor
    9) sanguinius ....hate the pose, wouldve loved it either starting flight or grounded. Sanguinius is foremost a creature of the warp .....he can fly with physic defying wings .....imagine putting wings on him twice the size and then putting him on tabletop .... he isnt a bird ,,,those are designed to represent angel wings....Primarch and space marine faces and heads are not supposed to represent human ones, they are supposed to look slightly apart from humans
10)ferrus ....the guy youre referring to is collosus i think...still looks like hes swinging a bat but i like his pose (that hammer was made for him by fulgrim was it not? he is looking up and angled up ...."its basically a movie right" says the guy who knows none of the lore ...yet...lol
    11) .....redacted
    12)Angron ...agree
    13) Guilliman ....has a short sword but in keeping with short swords of the romans...is not really a melee specialist.....he is the primarch of generalism ....i think his armour fits him well ...cant imagaine what he would have in place of that power fist .....maybe scrolls or a bolter ...
14)Mortarian ...he was looking like that before nurgles influence ...power armour
    15)Magnus...agree
    16)horus...agree
    17)Lorgar...agree
    18)Vulkan....agree
19)Corax....agree wouldve preferred the pistol holstered and the hand claw resembling the other hand claw could forgive the actionpose if we had that
    20)Alpharius...Agree

I’m with you on mostly everything but if people wanna believe any of the unknown Primarchs are women than that’s fine dude. Woman also produce testosterone anyways (PCOS is also common which means even more testosterone) so that doesn’t really matter. Let people have fun, this is fantasy ✌️

"I can fill in a lot with my imagination, I can fill in a lot of blanks."
My thoughts on the whole HH series. IMO it's a net negative for the lore and setting. It was so much better as a near-myth in the "present" of M41+.

Affirmative. I also never liked the idea of the primarchs coming back. Giving them rules takes away a lot from the mythos.

@@tomukuruzu agreed. I grew up seeing space marines as descendants of those mythical beings and seeing Guilliman or Magnus on a battlefield takes away from their coolness..

@@d-emprahexpects849 Absolutely. Those and the lore in the various Epic/Space Marine/Titan Legion books was the high water mark of 40k lore when it came to the HH.

Angron killing members of his own legion to get to the enemy is so on point I love it.

I really wish you'd have done some research on the Primarchs, before doing this video, as it really would have helped. Knowing about Magnus 'the Red', because of the red skin; Ferrus Manus' living metal arms etc. Also, some of the Primarch models were designed to be fighting each other: Magnus vs Leman Russ and Ferrus Manus vs Fulgrim. Sanguinius is supposed to be fighting a deamon, but you had to buy this separately. They are not wearing Terminator armour, it would be bespoke Artificer armour. I think this video would be worth doing a revisit on, in the future, once you know their backgrounds. This being said, I do agree with you on the over use of dead space marines on their bases.

The Magnus model has to be my favorite one, because I think it captures his image perfectly. Strong, imposing, and towering, but not reliant on his brute strength, still utilizing his psychic power
