that banner turned out so so good! The idea of "dont paint the hero models different, just paint them the same+" definitely makes things much more cohesive and forces you to really see how far you can push your normal army painting recipe - and even find quick things you can add to your batch painting steps too
While I do prefer the paintjob on the newer one, and it's a very nice paintjob, I must say I prefer the old one. Not because of any fault of yours, but it's simply a model I've seen many times before. The old marshall is a model I've never seen, since it's a kitbash, and it's that uniqueness that I always love to see when playing against someone
@@KoteDarasuum nope, firstborn look puny and the faces look retarded compared to primaris. You know it too, get off the nostalgia with the first born Watch the primaris termies be sold out in minutes. They look better, paint better and are proper scale.
@@rolandnavarro5946 Primaris have better scale, but firstborn have the capacity to look way more interesting than Primaris. Their helmets are cooler, their weapons are cooler, etc.
@@_Gondor44_ also i personally prefer less uniform look of firstborn in 40k. I feel like more uniform marines fit better in to Legion Astartes in Horus Heresy. I would like Primaris way more if they werent as uniform and boring.
You present things in such an easy to understand and digestible way. I have watched hundreds, maybe thousands of painting videos/tutorials, but I dont think any have helped inspire and further my understanding of painting minis quite like yours. The new marshall looks phenomenal, keep up the brilliant work!
I have so much red cloth to paint with Ashes of Faith coming out and I can't tell you how much I needed to see you paint that cape. Those highlights are so nice on the shoulder. Also can't deny the new Marshal is superior to the old 👀
I second the decal demand! Especially when Games Workshop has gotten legal with 3rd party decal makers for lesser chapters. At minimum if they have a special rule or character that is official we should either be able to buy them or put like a big sheet in boxes. I mean how hard would it be to downsize the 90 blueberry decals to maybe just a squads worth and give some successors some love?
Yeah the whole "we're not making transfers for these chapters and you're not allowed to either" mentality they have towards 3rd party companies is super annoying
Found your videos about a week ago. I have since bought all the recruit edition items and set up a full paint station and spent roughly 5 hours painting a single space marine last night. Thank you for your service.
This video finally gave me courage to start working on my own Marshal that I kitbashed half a year ago and have been afraid to paint ever since. Thanks you!
Old Marshal tells a more unique hobby story. I can almost imagine a young player getting excited about using his kitbashed captain in a 40k battle ! The new one is going to look great on the shelf but I don´t think he is going to see much tabletop time.
Love how the new one looks in that paint job and the details. And I am tempted to try a Ying-Yang symbol like that banner one day. Have to give a shoutout to the old once since first born are gone the way of the Dodo now.
Undercoat black primer then position your light source take a photo of the model from all the different angles then you don’t have to go back and forth with the torch. You could edge highlight all the armour too to further define the shapes.
Honestly, this is a really good job. I 100% agree with HQ units being done up like your troops but with additional details. Getting them done up the same as your troops allows you to field them if you don't have the time to go the whole nine yards in one day, but by adding onto the standard paint job, your heroes come alive Good luck on your crusade against the Blue Orks
I appreciate the "paint them exactly like your normal troopers...and then you add to them" sentiment. Because yeah if I know what the baseline should look like and be painted like, then I know how I go about painting all the extra bits and details.
Thoroughly enjoy your insane amount of painting techniques. Could have sworn you had finished your gold exploration but this gold was new and amazing! Shine on that armor is incredible! Painting all those non-GW models really has you making strides.
I like both marshals but I have to say I think I prefer the old once since it feels more unique and he’s named and kitbashed. You should totally do a video where you remake Clairvox and Warmund in primaris
I like your method. It’s quite agile. After the essential paint job, you can call it done at any point, and concentrate only to those places you feel need something extra special.
Awesome paint job on your new hero! I had the same model but I used the Power fist as the right hand weapon and placed on the helmet to make him look like a juggernaut.
While the new one is absolutely an improvement on the old one, the old one still has a lot of charm. You should try and create an updated version of him and see how much better you could make him.
Love the decals. Gutted that they're 22 UK, all my iron hands could literall be any one except for the iron father and my venerable dread because I free handed an aweful insignia. Btw in regards to who is better, your old marshal is amazing but the new guy in gravi I just leagues above. Brother you inspired me to try harder with my painting, to make my miniatures look actually good. I learn from your videos while every thing is nice and chill and I've noticed since I've been watching you my painting has improved and the actual desire to paint, it no longer feels like something I have to do to get them table ready, it's something I want to do, I'm even painnting stuff that has no relevance to my army like I recently painted a DND hellwasp for fun. I guess I'm trying to say thank you for opening my eyes these past few months to a side of the hobby I didn't realise could be this enjoyable.
This is the way I paint all my HQs. I get them 'done' the way everything else in the army does so I can then take a little extra time pushing a few highlights and adding contrast
In terms of painting style....Yeah the new one is better, but in terms of model, there is a cool level of style and flare that the new one just dosent have. It whould be lovely to see you "re-kitbash" the old captain and paint him up with your new incredible painting skill. Lovely video J.
Ahhhh! Thanks Jay this was the perfect video I just needed to paint the same captain, but of course in my custom black swords space marine chapter colours of course.
Your old marshall feels like the right-hand man of the new one! Also whilst the new marshall is sooo much better I do think that the old one is very cute in like a toyish kinda way
Never been here this early before. But this looks so good!! And I didn't realize that royal capes are lined, I will definitely take that into consideration when painting my models.
Great job! One trick to have the best cloak - put the single thinnest highlight in the darkest recesses of the cloak. it looks much more natural and is actually true to life
To be honest I like the idea of the bare head. I know you don't like how small it is, but here's my thinking: The head has very vibrant colours, making it a focal point which draws the eye a lot. On top of that, the giant gravis hood frames the head perfectly, giving the smaller head a nice amount of space which is good since it's the focal point and you don't want it to be obscured or covered up by anything.
I like the way you highlighted the red, but have you ever tried thinned Baylor brown? It's a yellow-brown so the red shows through and gives a more natural brownish orange.
ah you see my secret with red capes and highlighting to avoid pink is orange. A light orange glaze will desaturate enough without hitting that pinks. I'm also glad to see that im not the only person who has seemingly lost the ejected casings for this guy coming out of his boltstorm gauntlet. I also snapped the servo tendrils but we wont talk about that.
a Kitbashed Gravis Marshal would have been awesome :D but i prefer the old one. A Buddy of mine kitbashed his BT's with MK 3 Helmets and Shoulders and Grey Knight Helmets to get this "Holy-Knight-Theme"
Omg a billion decals 😱 I thought 70 odd I've had to transfer over to the body of a 1/24 scale Toyota supra was a chore , im getting close to putting the decals on my tau pathfinder kill team, I went with the box art as a guide🤪 it's the first mini's painted since my mid teens 😊

Less stressful too! Starting from the known and going beyond. I like that "same+" :)
Did Jay say where he got that banner? This mini normally doesn’t come with it and yet it looks as if it should have always had it.

That is an excellent paint job on an amazing mini. Really well done.

The flashlight is a great tool for understanding highlighting I didn’t think of myself. Thank you for sharing!
oh my god the back banner! yes!!! thats exactly what this model was missing, ordering some bits now.
Never seen a face painted with those colors but i love it. And the way you highlighted the cape is definitely a technique i will use in the future.

Love both of them. I think you should have made some references to your old one, as if he had the primaris surgery and kept some of his old wargear.
I love the paint job on the new one. it's much better, but sculpt for sculpt the old shines❤
Back in the day I used a similar symbol for the shoulderpads of my space wolves (it was a wolf face instead of a cross). A loooot of freehanding
Excellent job! Bravo!!! I wish you would do more painting videos because you are talented

As a 20years old BT collecter, i love them both 🙏🏻

Badass paintjob on both 🤘🤘 that red really adds a new element
Awesome paintjob, Bit Tool much Eavy Metal Style for my Taste.
I'd recommend a mixing white to help highlight red, specifically a zinc white. It doesn't desaturate the colors, it just "cools it down"
He looks amazing! Well done! Definitely worth the time and effort.
