Decided to finally try clipper and immediately searched your videos. Yet another awesome video that helped me immensely. Thank you for being awesome for all these years.
Given the dirth of Raspberry Pi stock, Kiauh is a really amazing tool that will install Klipper and your choice of UI, moonraker, etc. to almost any system running Linux. This allows use of the alternatives to Pi easily without having to do manual installations.
I just used Kiauh to install everything on a thin client today. Now, thanks to Chris, I can finish getting the Klipper on my printer. I chose Fluidd by flipping a coin ;).

You might want to watch the video by Vector 3D, He has developed a system to calibrate your printer. It is about $5 to purchase, but I have used it on 3 of my printers with success. Take a look th-cam.com/video/QZtND2D1U1A/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Vector3D
Hey Paul, glad it's coming along. I have never done a whole video like that, but I will think on it. There might be a way I can show how different changes effect accuracy.
Hi Chris. I used Fluidd as my goto for a long time. I now install both of them with every setup. I find Mainsail is becoming more my thing for the moment. They are both solid and similar features. Thank you for the great videos!
keep up the good work Chris, I have started migrating my x5sa to klipper so I’m definitely interested in getting more. So far I have both mainsail and fluidd running on the same computer but have mostly used mainsail.
Nice work. One thing I think you should cover is the ability to flash klipper over serial. I do it periodically and it's nice because my electronics are a pita to get to. Serial flashing allows you to skip the SD card dance.
Thanks for the knowledge! First-time tinkerer who just got Octopi running Klipper but you've encouraged me to expand my horizons! Leaning towards Mainsail but you presented Fluidd really well too! Great job breaking everything down into salient points with clear explanations. Have a like and a sub!
Here it is, looks like you don't need to change anything with GPIO for this one. github.com/Klipper3d/klipper/blob/master/config/generic-bigtreetech-skr-v1.3.cfg
Chris, good series on Klipper. I know you are not a fan boy the way I am, but you have presented a very fair explanation of the process. I loved Octoprint and Marlin, until I discovered Klipper. The big difference is the ease of editing the configuration files, once you do get it set up - you will never have to compile again. You might delve into how Klipper moves the work onto the Pi from the printer mainboard and other things it can do like pressure advance and input shaper. Rat Rig has an image that is really different - RatOS that is complete with optional configuration files for each version of their printer.
Thank you for this video, it is really informative. I want to ask, if im running octoklipper now and want to try mainsail i have to make an new config file and upload to my printer or i just need to install mainsail to my raspberry and connect ?
Thanks for watching! Just mainsail on Raspberry Pi. I would look at the Kiauh install it will let you install it as well very easy. www.lpomykal.cz/kiauh-installation-guide/
Awesome, about the only was is through and example config github.com/Klipper3d/klipper/tree/master/config or hope someone has done it and you can google it.
Thank Chris for this great video. I’m still using Octoklipper, and I’m wondering why Mainsail is so loved, and if this could be linked to the way to update Klipper version?
Love the way you go step by step on your video's. Going to try Klipper on my x5sa. The printer is a real POS with stock firmware. Have had this thing a year and haven't even been able to get it to level or home. I hope klipper will be my rescue for this machine. Just can't make up my mind which ui I want to try. Long time user of octoprint but I am open to fluidd and mainsail. Maybe I will just install all 3 lol. See what happens. Have octoklipper installed on my sd card now. Should have more sd cards in the mailbox tomorrow for trying out the other 2. If Klipper runs well on the x5sa I will probably try it on my flsunqqs pro and ender 3 pro. (Kinda want to build a voron and ratrig too..)
@@ChrisRiley I ended up installing KIAUH klipper on my pi for testing. I attempted to flash my mainboard and found out it has a strange firmware. When I went to flash it nothing happened. Apparently I have to use different software to flash to an older firmware to then flash to klipper. This is getting interesting lol. I am almost to the point of just replacing the board and putting on a bltouch. With the KIAUH I can experiment with all three of the UI's so looking forward to getting this thing working. The main reason I want to keep octoprint is Home Assistant. Nice thing is I can still use them all so I call it a win. So If you have an X5SA and going to flash klipper its going to be an interesting process!
Thank you for the great videos which you do. I have a custom ender-3 with a SKR E3 Turbo board and dual lead screw with dual stepper motors. Still today I use Marlin by z stepper auto align (G34). I'm thinking of trying Klipper but I don't know what choices there are in this case. So I believe that will be a great idea and helpful, if you can make a video like the "All things z - deep dive" but this time for Klipper!! Many thanks in any case!
Good day I'm building Voron2.4. After G28, the Hotend homing, but the Z motors don't lock, you can move them up and down with your hands even if they light up blue. I can't get further because it fails on QGL. The board is Spider 2.2. Can you advise me? well thank you
Changed to BTT E3V3 after my Creality 4.2.7 became faulty. All back up and working with ease after following this video. 👌 One question though, my ender 3 pro screen was showing some basic info (temps, fan speed, progress%) but now its just blank? Can I get that info back or is the screen now redundant?
Chris, your videos are very good. You put is out there so that it seems pretty easy... But damn. It is a lot to take in. I just tried the Creality Sonic Pad and it will not work. I have a CR-10S Pro and had to put a BLTouch on it, when done the Sonic Pad still errors. Im thinking that I may just go the Pi method... But you can't get one reasonably so I'm looking at the Bigtreetech CB1..... Do you have any info on that one for install Klipper install?
Thanks! I don't know much about the CB1, but be careful, some of the board you see still require a Pi. Not all the vendor models seem to do the job well. I am still looking into a few of them.
I have a request Chris. A print quality compare betwen an ender 3 with klipper and with RepRap of the mellow fly. Despite of the cool of the firmware the main purpose of a 3d printer is to produce 3d printed objects. Maybe klipper can really produce better prints on the same hardware. PS. Your videos are truly a main guide for me thanks for your time
Any idea why my cr-10s pro wouldn’t connect to mainsail until I installed the rc script and switched the microcontroller to Linux process? It’s not listed in the documentation as a requirement unless you’re setting up an adxl.. but nothing I did would get my printer to connect until I did that.
I need to switch the states of endstops, because my shows triggered when they are not, and open when they are triggered. In marlin it was an easy step to switch the detection, but cannot find nothing in Klipper/Mainsail. Thanks for help.
Thank you again for this video! I am runnig klipper+mainsail on my E3Pro (with skr e3v3) from CB1 and Pi4b adapter. Is it possible to use one instance of Mainsail and translate it to second E3Pro or would I need to buy another CB1?
Hi, trying to install klipper on my SKR E3 V3 as well. However I can't seem to find what to do with the "GPIO pins to set at micro-controller startup". In this video 30:03 . What GPIO pin did you use. Any idea? Or where did you find the info? Thanks in advance!
IS there any way you could help me out directly. I've been trying for 4 years to fix my Ender 3 Pro , and I need some help . I 've watched many videos on how to install klipper on my printer. I have WinSCP, a Raspberry Pi 3 MIcro sd card. I live in ORegon so I'm on Pacific Time zone.
Well, I think I'm going to give this a try. I recently was able to free up my Pi4, so nothing is holding me back. I'm still running an old version of Marlin, so I guess I'll take the plunge. I have an old TAZ5 that could probably use some updating.
yah i cant get the fluidd local to work. I can ssh into the pi and everything but i cant log into the fluidd web interface. im about to just try it with octoklipper. im not sure what the deal with fluidd is but the network issues are odd.
I have problems with .local addresses sometimes. It could be some issue in the Fluidd host file. Ask a question over on their github, it might be a known issue.
i have a ender 3 with a stock 4.2.2 board but i have a 4.2.7 silent board coming in the mail and i was wondering what gpio pins i would need to type in for it also would they be the same. Thank you!
Hey Chris. Is there any way to install Mainsail, Fluid, and Octoprint on the same pi? I keep reading that there is, but I don’t see how it’s possible when the imager just overwrites the SD card. Is there another way to go about that?
I would think you could, but you would have to have them with separate installs. Or there would be some serious hacking as far as ports and things. I will think on it, not sure how all that would work.
Hey random question for you as it looks like you've done the steps recently - Did you use the FluiddPi or KIAUH script? The site recommends NOT using FluiddPi and recommends KIAUH whilst GIT states "Usage of this script happens at your own risk!" Cheers in advance if you answer!
If it's an HDMI screen, it should just come up, otherwise you will have to install some drivers via command line. The people you got the screen from should have the commands you need to run.
Hi Chris i did the same but klipper reporting startup saying printer is not ready clipper software is trying to connect ,the its saying mcu rpi unable to conect why what wrong ? Thank u bro.
I'm using the mellow fly super 8 1.3v not sure if it need a pin and i couldn't find the pin for that board as I'm a beginner lol but it worked lol 😂 can't thank u enough🙏
Some times the boards get confused and won't show up. Set your MCU as the USB device listed in /dev and see if it will work. You can find that with ls /dev/tty* It's going to be something like ttyAMA0
@@elgunshirley3375 That looks like it should be correct. It might be connecting, but there is an error in the printer.cfg. Make sure it's not calling out something in the GUI.
Before doing a "make menuconfig" I would do a "git pull", because the Klipper files could be rather old. The sudo command doesn't ask you for the root password. It asks for the pi password. Normally you would delete the root password for security reasons, so a login for root would be impossible. sudo would still work, because it is not the root password that is needed.
@@ChrisRiley You are welcome. I would have done the installation of Mainsail and Fluidd differently, more easy, but I don't want to tell about it in the public.
I just setup Klipper for the first time which took me about 2 days to get the config and everything working, but now I am stuck where I cant print anything. Every time I try to print from OrcaSlicer to MainSail, it fails and says: // Unknown command:"SDCARD_PRINT_FILE" Its driving me nuts trying to figure it out!
Thanks for helping me telepathically again, Chris! LOL I added this to my printer config file: [virtual_sdcard] path: ~/printer_data/gcodes on_error_gcode: CANCEL_PRINT
People should watch out for speed settings in any printer.cfg file they grab from somewhere. My bearings started screaming and needed a good clean and lube before I could run my printer at typical Klipper speeds.
Hey man it was great meeting you at ERRF last week. Like I told you, your videos helped me out of a lot of jams. Now of course you come up when I’m looking for info about Klipper. So thanks again! Quick tip: Give Mobaxterm a try. It basically combines putty and winscp into one tool. It’s pretty sweet. And I believe it’s free/you don’t need a license for it if you’re just one user.
@@ChrisRiley well, good news, I found them. But not sure they're hot commodities, Lol, these are a few years old and i only paid $14 for the two at the Goodwill near me.. 😁👍
Holy Heck.. He said at the start that this is for those of us who know nothing or little to know nothing of Klipper.. then zooms fast through tons of typing and talks fast about this that whatever! So how the heck are we whom as he said know nothing about how Klipper is set up, to keep up with this very fast talking oh type this that stuff again fast and with commands we have no knowledge off, how can we newbies of Klipper even hope to keep up? This is a very complex thing to learn and try to get our minds used to and your zooming along like we already know how it is done? There is so little around to help us newbies to all this as it is. We need slow step by step clear shown close up screen shots that point out what and why we need to do what is needed? Not zoom through with no close up typed commands shown. Remember we new to this don't know anything about the many commands of where to get the files or how the system is set up!
Thanks for watching. I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble. I know the videos move quickly. It's a fine line between moving slow enough to teach, but fast enough to keep our audience interested. Well, I think I'm going to give this a try. I recently was able to free up my Pi4, so nothing is holding me back. I'm still running an old version of Marlin, so I guess I'll take the plunge. I have an old TAZ5 that could probably use some updating.
Good luck with your projects!
If I have a preflashed pi and board from fysetc that has klipper installed with octoprint. Can I use KIAUH to change to fluidd from the octoprint
Not sure yet, stay tuned
That was awesome. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
yah i cant get the fluidd local to work.
@@ChrisRiley currently planning on flashing it all from start. And seeing if that helps. Probably a config file
@@ChrisRiley also tried via the Mac and the IP. Connection refused. It's a known issue but the workaround is even crazier.
help from anyone I am using a MacBook Pro, what can I use instead of putty for setting up Klipper. any help will be appreciated .
I've don't use Mac, but I have seen tools like this. termius.com/free-ssh-client-for-mac-os
If i have already flashed klipper to my mainboard i don't have to follow the steps at 9:35?
Correct, that part is just to flash it to the board.
i have a ender 3 with a stock 4.2.2 board but i have a 4.2.7 silent board coming in the mail and i was wondering what gpio pins i would need to type in for it also would they be the same. Thank you!
Check you the example configs, they have all the pins in them. There is one for both boards. github.com/Klipper3d/klipper/tree/master/config
@@ChrisRiley hi I was able to figure it out but now I’m stuck again with a .hex file which I have no idea what to do with
is there a way two run 2 printers on a single pi using mainsail.?
Yes, the easiest way is with Kiauh, check this out. th-cam.com/video/LImiFmhMAB0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xgjkWfxiRmbjTfWZ
Kiauh.
I have a screen installed on my pi. How do I get into the shell/GUI?
Hey random question for you as it looks like you've done the steps recently - Did you use the FluiddPi or KIAUH script?
The site recommends NOT using FluiddPi and recommends KIAUH whilst GIT states "Usage of this script happens at your own risk!"
Cheers in advance if you answer!
I just built it from command line, but I do recommend KIAUH for these installs, it works much better.
If it's an HDMI screen, it should just come up, otherwise you will have to install some drivers via command line. The people you got the screen from should have the commands you need to run.
Thank you so much for this!!!
You're so welcome!
you are the best my man
Thank you!
So why choose Fluidd or Mainsail over say, Octoprint?
As far as Klipper is concerned Fluidd or Mainsail have more integrated features then using the octoprint plugin. They are just a lot easier to use.
@@ChrisRiley Great, thanks!
Mainsail all day!!
👍🙂
@11:54, you did not explain what these GPIO pins are. I cannot just google search it. No information is available.
Example: BTT SKR2
Check this out, it might help. th-cam.com/video/qS1TC7zVXYw/w-d-xo.html
@@ChrisRiley thanks man. Really appreciated. I know why I subscribed.
Thank you that helped a lot
Glad to hear it!
time to do a 5 minute benchy on ender 3 pro using fluidd(i mean 3dprinterfun could. it definently won't take me 5 years right?------- Right?)
I have faith in you!
@@ChrisRiley XD
i am getting the "mcu 'mcu' : Unable to connect" error how do i fix it?
It's almost always the GPIO pin causing you problem. Check your setting in menuconfig again.
Hi Chris i did the same but klipper reporting startup saying printer is not ready clipper software is trying to connect ,the its saying mcu rpi unable to conect why what wrong ?
Thank u bro.
Hey, it's usually an MCU pin issue. Check the example config for your board and make sure you are using the correct pin when you compile.
It worked !!!!
U r an angel Chris
I was doing mainsail 46 bit as my pi is 46 bit and it didn't work, i tried the 32 bit it worked😂 I'm so happy brother hands down for you 😇🙏thank u 🙏🏻
I'm using the mellow fly super 8 1.3v not sure if it need a pin and i couldn't find the pin for that board as I'm a beginner lol but it worked lol 😂 can't thank u enough🙏
for me i serial does not show up i did everything thing in step and this is what stopped me if you can help me that would be awesome
Some times the boards get confused and won't show up. Set your MCU as the USB device listed in /dev and see if it will work. You can find that with ls /dev/tty* It's going to be something like ttyAMA0
@@ChrisRiley hello again I tried what you said and my id came out as this usb-1a86_USB_Serial-if00-port0 is this the correct id?
@@elgunshirley3375 That looks like it should be correct. It might be connecting, but there is an error in the printer.cfg. Make sure it's not calling out something in the GUI.
@@ChrisRiley ok thank you so much
what if im using a th3d ezboard? im in the klipper config currently
There is an example for it. github.com/Klipper3d/klipper/tree/master/config
@@ChrisRiley thank you so much
Before doing a "make menuconfig" I would do a "git pull", because the Klipper files could be rather old. The sudo command doesn't ask you for the root password. It asks for the pi password. Normally you would delete the root password for security reasons, so a login for root would be impossible. sudo would still work, because it is not the root password that is needed.
Thanks for your insight!
@@ChrisRiley You are welcome. I would have done the installation of Mainsail and Fluidd differently, more easy, but I don't want to tell about it in the public.
@@yaVDRgda kiauh?
Speaking of, any plans on doing a 2.4 build w/ Klipper?
Coming soon!
how to flash the mainboard is stated is the printer.cfg file for respective board in the documentation... if you have a common board.
Cool, thanks!
Nice video!
Thanks!
Anybody encounter issues where it doesn't update using the button, can't get the system to update using mainsail
Only problem I have had is the order I updated them in. Some times I have to do them separately until they all succeed.
I just setup Klipper for the first time which took me about 2 days to get the config and everything working, but now I am stuck where I cant print anything. Every time I try to print from OrcaSlicer to MainSail, it fails and says: // Unknown command:"SDCARD_PRINT_FILE"
Its driving me nuts trying to figure it out!
Thanks for helping me telepathically again, Chris! LOL I added this to my printer config file:
[virtual_sdcard]
path: ~/printer_data/gcodes
on_error_gcode: CANCEL_PRINT
LOL! You're welcome!
People should watch out for speed settings in any printer.cfg file they grab from somewhere. My bearings started screaming and needed a good clean and lube before I could run my printer at typical Klipper speeds.
Thanks for the tip!
Great Video, fluidd .LOLL
Thanks 👍
Great!!
Thank you

mine will not connect to host at all
The quickest way to get up and running would be to let Kiauh do the work. th-cam.com/video/LImiFmhMAB0/w-d-xo.html
Great to meet you too! I'll check it out, thanks
the kiauh script automates the install with a command line gui
Thank you
@@ChrisRiley your welcome
"A lot of WORK" does not apply for a hobby!😁
How true. 😀
I'd try Klipper, but you would not be my friend anymore after a month of annoying questions ever 10 mins!!! LOLOLOL
Lol! You'll always be my friend!
Now if I could only remember where I put my two Pi's.. 😐
Better not lose those, that's a hot commodity!
@@ChrisRiley well, good news, I found them. But not sure they're hot commodities, Lol, these are a few years old and i only paid $14 for the two at the Goodwill near me.. 😁👍
man mjpeg still.. when will the 1990s end. webRTC with literally anything (h264, typically) has less latency and 1/10th the bandwidth =[
lol, yeah, not sure why, but this is what we're still doing.
11:05 should be "make menuconfig", too fast edit
thanks
