Oh! Add one of those blinking things on the resolution graph when you change from 1080 to 1440 to 4k. Indicate the change is coming so I know what to look at.
This is by far the best review you guys have made! I loved how you were able to look at things from a variety of perspectives (gaming, productivity, upgrading from different kinds of customers and upgrade paths, CPU bottlenecked games vs normal gaming, etc.) One tiny bit of feedback, I'd love to see even older stuff than 3 gens ago... the 3600x feels fairly modern to me. I have a 3900x, and I see no reason to upgrade for another few generations. Can you add a few significantly older CPUs like a 7700k, a ryzen 1800x, and one that's REALLY old, just for refernetial purposes(maybe a 4770k and 2700k?) I think it'd give a good perspective on how things have progressed over the years and would help out people who keep their hardware a long time (such as myself). Great job LMG team!
Yeah as someone with 3900x as well, there is just no reason to upgrade. Our cpu is great. They won't add those older cpus because that's too much work. :)
I don't really see a need to go further back than Zen2. While it was a notable upgrade from Zen1, they were still very much playing catchup to Intel for gaming. (How times have changed.) Zen3 was the first time they really "caught" Intel and it took X3D for AMD to finally get an undisputed win. But don't for a second think that just because there's faster chips out there that you "need" to upgrade. My kids are still playing strong on a pair of 4790Ks. That chip is still a beast over a decade later.

Your timing is off. They ditched it :P (yeah, I get what you mean. It was nice of them to release a X3D chip on AM4) If you already own one great, if you plan on buying one... just get a 5700X3D or 7800X3D instead, the 5800X3D price at the moment for the last remaining few is silly. Once the 5700X3D supplies run out that's it for AM4 value, but it's had a long and amazing run.
Thank you for including GPU limited 1440p (and 4k) scores. Not surprising, but important to confirm for those of us washed up gamers chillin on AM4 and 5800x3D! Not all of us are young enough anymore to see the code at 480hz and have enough cartilage in our hands for esports. 1440p ultra settings FTW.
So true! I only play sim / rpg / single player games so the eye candy is always turned on. I don't mind turning the frames down a bit if the preset is going to be ultra on 1400p, so 1080p on low settings scores don't mean much to me. My 5800x3D chip will last me for a good long while, as it feeds my 7900XTX all the necessary stuff it needs to crank up those graphics. AM4 / 5800x3D was such a good decision / production run by AMD.
I just decided to stay with AM4 5800X3D&4090 build, no reason to upgrade yet. Even with G.O.W Ragnarok, I get 365 frames max on high settings at 3440x1440p 240hz monitor.
I appreciate the transparency. Most non technical people watch 1080p benchmarks, see ~100fps improvement, buy the x3d chip and then play on nothing but 2k or 4k resolution with nearly no benefit after spending much more than they should on a cpu and less on gpu. Buyers should only purchace an expensive x3d only if they have a 4080 or 4090. Pairing it with a 7800xt or a 4070 is a waste of money.
Highest quality CPU review I’ve seen from you all ever. Answered every question I had, specifically the 5800X3D comparison at 1440p and 2160p and the thermals. I was informed exactly how I needed to be to make a decision that makes sense for MY setup, thank you.
Exactly. The 1440p and 2160p comparison's were indeed the most important ones for me as I've got a 5800X3D + 4090 set up. At lowest I use DLSSQ + FG at 4K and a lot of the time DLAA + FG to hit 60-144fps (using VRR). Maybe in 2 years Zen 6 or 7 + RTX6090 is a good upgrade path.
Yeah, I was planning on putting my order in, but I was hoping someone would put a 1440p benchmark with high/ultra settings. Turns out I am going to skip and keep my 7800x3d for the next 5 years. I don't see AMD or Intel making any significant gains. Most likely next gen chips will feature some AI features to fake the frames rather than brutal CPU power.
@@MadViking82goes to show how badly the new games are optimized. With a 4090, you shouldn't require dlss or frame gen. This fake tech has ruined native gaming experience.
The best review sadly still is their 5800X3D one bc they actually showed some games that DO use the V-Cache. Also, there are lots of cpu bound games even in 1440p. Just testing AAA-games isn't really up to those standards I had hoped for LTT to be at, especially after their drama.
That's why I haven't upgraded my aging 8600k it still keeps up just fine at 4k 60FPS with a 4070. I'm GPU bound not CPU bound even with an old processor
I almost bought that just half a year ago, which shows how good that CPU still is. Then I decided to get the 7800X3D for more future-proofing. No regrets.
I gotta say, that sponsor segue was hilarious! I actually laughed, and it made me way more curious about the product than I usually am with ads. This is the only fair review of this chip I have seen. All the other shills are only showing 1080p results and claiming this is the best gaming cpu on the market. They fail to tell you it makes no sense to buy this chip if you play at high resolutions. They are misleading to say the least, some might call them fraudulent. Glad to see this channel redeem itself with a complete and honest review, not some paid-for shills like other channels at this point. Also funny to see you showing ther increased power draw vs previous gen, while some other channel just claims it uses less power.

Great review, Great video! I really liked that you integrated the 3600X, to see just how much the new processors has evovled. I also really liked that you explained that it doesn't really matter when you play in 4K. And compared it to the other X3D Chips. But may I ask, why you didn't show the 3600X stats in the 4k and Production Benchmarks? It would be really interesting to see the difference between them and see if its worth upgrading. Thank you for including more graphically intensive game benchmarks. I was about to comment asking for that since the first six? benchmarks were 1080/low .
This was such an efficient and informative review. And I really appreciate you throwing in higher graphics settings 1440p and 4k numbers because barely anyone is fps maxing at 1080p low settings with a 4090
What was not mentioned is that enabling upscaling like dlss would dramatically boost your frames only for the 9800x3D. The best cpu is still by far the best in 4K as well, one just has to unburden the graphics card take advantage of the extra power. Ultra settings and no upscaling in 4k is not a real world scenario for AAA games and a misleading argument
Thats an interesting point but there's no reason to use dlss if the GPU is not bottlenecked. And it will still be bottlenecked with dlss, and the few frames aren't enough to spend the extra bucks on a better GPU instead imo
@@Yayadays111 Well the reason to use dlss is if you have a 120-240 Hz 4K monitor. In that case, there are really only two cpus that can actually run those framerates in AAA games, regardless of resolution. Of course, the priority is the GPU so one should get that first. However, assuming you already have a good 4K card, then getting a top tier cpu will drastically improve your experience. I would not upgrade from 7800x3D, but i would not upgrade to that cpu either anymore, unless it goes back to 300 dollars. Both a 7800x3D and a 9800x3D will be a mindblowing upgrade from a 5800x3D though. That's what i mean.
@@cacaw_0 what?? Ultra settings and no upscaling on AAA absolutely is realistic. Tons of people play like that. Tons of AAA games still don't even support DLSS at all.
Thank you for finally including 1440 ultra and other benchmarks like that!!! It’s shockingly hard to find information like that. It’s nice to know in the real world what gaming looks like on new chips. Please keep that up
It's only because if you're GPU bottlenecked, then the results will be the same since it's the GPU holding back performance. Watch GPU benchmarks if you wanna see that type of result.
@@DeanoDrives But you saw what happens... these days most are the games are gpu limited and for the ones that aren't, even a benchmark in low setting translates to the overall experience in the game. If a game has an option for rtx, it's maxing the gpu regardless
@@Xyler94 It makes sense, but I still want to know how a game is going to perform in the real world. Throwing in a couple of actual use case benchmarks alongside the 1080p low stuff is a welcome change.
@@Dr.WhetFarts Being "niche" has nothing to do with it, they benchmarked plenty of games with smaller active playerbases than WoW, FFXIV, etc, both of which still rack in millions of players. The dynamic nature, however, is more true but there are ways to work around that.
Really, X3D does well in heavy sim-based games, which certain areas of MMOs will definitely have, like major cities with a lot of NPCs. BG3 lower city, factorio, They Are Billions (I got huge uplift moving to the 5800X3D), and even having a giant base in sandboxes with a gazillion assets.
I really like how LTT is objectively regarding rating CPUs. Everyone trash talk 9700x because of its performance in games, but its just can-do-it-all cpu and compare to even current fastest its not falling behind. If you have 3years old AMD there is no point to upgrade, but if u have anything older or Intel. You have quite a lot of options now. 5700x3d/5800x3d/7600-7700x/9600x/9700x/7800x3d/9800x3d and all of those choices will give you performance you need. Big thumb up to AMD for keeping it cool, I hate high temps.
@@nonamenosurname8516 thing is that the 9700x doesn't really make sense in general. It's barely faster than the 7700x which got cheaper and thus the better option. I mean you can still go with a 9800x3D if you want an octacore with Z5 architecture and it will actually beat the 9700x in productivity or just go even with it. Had they at least upped the cpu-pch interface for 9000 series ryzen.. That woulda given the 9700x a reason to exist but currently it just hasn't got one imho..
I wish the Ryzen 9800x3D drops the price of Ryzen 5800x3D or the 7800x3D. Or some other Ryzen chip. If the previous gen prices don't have marginal drops, it is not worth to upgrade tbh. The biggest problem is unavailability of previous gens in the market.
I love the little dots on the graphics to direct the viewer's eyes. I usually pause to read the charts, but now I can just quick glance and see immediately what the host is talking about.
99% of the time I skip sponsored segments. I never skip Dennis's. More Dennis sponsored segments. It feels like actual fun content to watch instead of a skip and pulling out my phone.
I'm afraid that people may enjoy them, because they distract you from the product they are selling with flashy acting and jokes. I suspect they have a worse turnover rate and sponsors will eventually demand the old format back. I hope to be wrong though.
@@zwatotem It could swing either way, I think. It's also possible that less people skipping them brings more eyes to the product and on average causes a higher turnover rate. I think it's hard to know without seeing the actual numbers, although I vaguely remember them mentioning on the WAN show that Dennis' spots do draw more engagement
FINALLY a cpu review with 1080/1440/4k testing. I hate it when nobody does that. "it doesn't matter" yeah, but some day it will, and I'd like to know when that day comes.
Genuinely I think this is one of the best and most comprehensive reviews you guys have ever done. Impressive on its own but even more so because you guys didn’t get lost in the sauce and everything was clear and understandable with really relevant comparison. Kudos to the writers on this and labs.
Really appreciate the 1440p/4k showcase as well. I've been seeing way too many people who spend 500€ on their CPU when spending more on their GPU would serve them significantly better.
"You should choose based on what a purchase does for you today, not based on what it might do for you later" As tempting as it may be to "future-proof", this is an absolutely sensible purchase philosophy to go by. Love it.
That's why I bought a Ryzen 7500f for less than 25% of the 9800X3D's launch price. I am GPU bottlenecked with my RTX 4070 in almost all the games I play and I'm not spending all that money for better 1% lows. LOL
This video really showing what LTT has been working towards, the graphs even when in quick succesion was easy enough to read. And the very good descriptions of what its pros and cons are was very good, even if I think it shouldve mentioned esports and simulation heavy games at 1440/2160p will still benefit from the stronger CPU.
the Stellaris chart is the only part I care about, 3d series is a genuine game changer for simulation heavy games and I am ecstatic to see that they are able to push it even further
Dennis sponsor spots are always the best! That first one really threw me off, there's not many ads I'll willingly watch multiple times but this is definitely one of them.
Thank you for the 1440p and 4K X3D comparisons. I “knew” but it’s good to know. I game at 1440p+ and am set with the 5800X3D. But for someone who likes to tinker those 9800X3D temps are wildly low.
Just to let you know amd moved the temperature sensors on zen 5 to "cooler" spots to avoid early throttling so still good numbers but they can't be compared to the previous generation. Watch Gamers Nexus' video for more info on this
I really like that you included benchmarks at 1440p and 4k. Yeah, that doesn't tell us which CPU is the most powerful, but it does show that it isn't really an upgrade at all for a 4k gamer like me.
Imma be honest, haven’t watched yalls benchmarks in a minute, HUB to me was far more conclusive, I remember always after watching LTT benchmarks/GPU/CPU reviews I always felt not completely and confidently informed, so watching this, I was expecting the same result, but I’m impressed :D yall covered %110 of any scenarios I had in mind, good stuff :)) Yall got me itching to upgrade 🥴
It's definitely a step up over some past LTT product reviews, but thy still need to fix their game selection; noone cares if you're running rocket league at 800 or merely 700fps, show us some modern games!
Thank you Linus. Finally someone listens and realizes that 1080p low testing is pointless for gaming. I've heard (and experienced) so many stories with disillusioned gamers who bought the latest and greatest gaming CPU only to not get any performance uplift because the real world ain't no sterile benchmark environment.
To be honest, I'm very glad this review mentioned how little the cpu upgrade actually matters when gaming at normal settings/resolution. And that's with a 4090. I'm probably gonna stick with my 7600x, even though it's paired with a 4090.. Just not worth paying $500 for a few fps. By comparison, I did exactly as you said and finally got my hands on asus's 480hz 1440p oled (pg27aqdp) yesterday!
Currently a 13600K / 14600K sit below the price of a 5800X3D here and offers much better performance in none gaming workloads whilst holding very respectable performance in games and have an iGPU if you want to ofload work to the GPU freeing he dedicated GPU. As much as there were big issues with 13th & 14th gen, end users and now profiting from the issues as prices dropped significantly at least here in UK. DDR4 3200mhz is all you need and there will be a decent jump with DDR5, but truly, a great chip. When it comes down to it though even a 3600X could likely power my RX 6800 it is paired with, even the 5800X3D is overkill for most people unless they play a lot of strategy games.
@SlightlyMental-e9i that may be true, but I literally don't know anyone who does "non-gaming" workloads. Of course professionals or serious hobbyists do, but that's about 1% of the "high-end" pc crowd.. And even that is probably generous. The 5800x3d was a great chip because it's buyers already had am4 boards and ddr4 ram. They didn't need to upgrade. Intel needs to get their shit together, it's not enough to offer a competitively priced/performing chip, they need to have long-term motherboard compatibility
Thank you for the Stellaris test! I'm a big fan of Strategy games, especially those made by Paradox (like Stellaris). CPU performance matters far more than GPU for strategy games, so I'd love to see more content about PC building for CPU intensive games in the future! (Perhaps a sliding scale of options between CPU and GPU on your budget builds?)
If you need a powerful PC to work, Threadripper(AMD) is your choice. If you need a powerful PC for gaming, AMD is also the absolute leader here. All other cases are not considered, because each individual case is unique and everyone has different financial capabilities, as well as PC needs. AMD - WON 🙂

The charts that are displayed between 6:00-6:45, make me really happy, because it shows that there are developers that care about their product because holy optimization batman
Its not illegal its just useless to test games on different cpu's on ultra since the gpu will be the bottleneck anyways. You could just google how many fps the GPU can reach in that game and take the 1080p chart and cut off anything above that.
I'm so happy to see a stellaris year test! That's one of the main games i play. Results from the 7800x3d to 9800x3d isnt enough for me to change to the 9800x3d yet, but those lower thermals are sure tempting
Appreciate the commentary on resolution. Most benchmarks are shown at 1080p, and it gives a false impression of massive gains for anyone gaming on 1440p and above.
CPUs don't care about resolution (That's the GPU) You generally want to see the maximum output to your CPU can do so if you're after a certain frame rate you already know that from the 1080p testing
@@squaaa7082 no that's really up to you. If you're happy with your performance there's really no need to upgrade. For me personally for single player titles I like 60 FPS and for multiplayer I like 120+ so if I had a 5900X then there would be really no need to upgrade as that CPU can keep up with most GPUs outside of a 4090.

This was such an efficient and informative review. And I really appreciate you throwing in higher graphics settings 1440p and 4k numbers because barely anyone is fps maxing at 1080p low settings with a 4090
Yeah, but granted, they did mention that it was mainly to see how CPUs handled gaming without a GPU bottleneck

You guys should test MMO games (like WoW) with x3d cpus. Those are often the ones who gets the most benefit of x3d's
was looking for this comment, x3d cpus are absolutely worth it for MMO players regardless of what resolution you're playing at.
MMOs are a niche genre in 2025 tho and even test conditions are almost impossible to do, since game is too dynamic.

@@nonamenosurname8516 thing is that the 9700x doesn't really make sense in general. It's barely faster than the 7700x which got cheaper and thus the better option. To be honest, I'm very glad this review mentioned how little the cpu upgrade actually matters when gaming at normal settings/resolution. And that's with a 4090.

We got r/cursedthumbnail submission from LTT before GTA 6
I'm so happy to see a stellaris year test! That's one of the main games i play. Results from the 7800x3d to 9800x3d isnt enough for me to change to the 9800x3d yet, but those lower thermals are sure tempting
Appreciate the commentary on resolution. Most benchmarks are shown at 1080p, and it gives a false impression of massive gains for anyone gaming on 1440p and above.
CPUs don't care about resolution (That's the GPU) You generally want to see the maximum output to your CPU can do so if you're after a certain frame rate you already know that from the 1080p testing
@@llkoojay273so your saying i should upgrade my 5900x? Lol
Definitely still happy with my 7800x3d I purchased for $300
Definitely, this is mainly "screw the current 7800x3D pricing, here is the improved sister chip with plenty of improvements to make it even more perfect."
I think it's impressive how good the 5800x3D still is 💀.
So happy with my 5700x3d and 3080. Can’t wait to come back to this video in 3 years when it’s time to upgrade to am5 after everyone starts going am6!
I CLICKED BECAUSE SCREAMING UNHINGED LINUS WAS ON THE RIGHT IM SCARED AND ALONE AND I HEAR HIM OUTSIDE…..
3:42 Core Ultra 5 285k?
Yeah, seems like even ltt is confused about Intels new naming scheme 😂
thank you for using the 3600 as well, very useful to compare new cpus to the one im using, thanks ltt !
Why Thumbnails keep changing
@@okman9684 about testing
Damn, that thumbnail is crazy
Really hsppy for 4k tests! Thank you
thank you for putting the 1440p fps charts. some of us run in 1440p rather than 1080 & 4K
I would really appreciate seeing the 5700x3D is some of these benchmarks only because it’s become a popular chip.
I appreciate the way the visual comedy has improved lately
Love showing how it performs under a gpu bottle neck! Thank you for including that testing!
