    Chris, appreciate the time you spent doing these instruction videos. I was a big fan of Marlin and appreciate the work done getting it to where it is. What I like about Klipper is the ability to make changes without having to recompile the code. It is a simple text file edit. The use of macros also opens new ways of getting things done. Will be interesting to see your future videos and will see you at ERRF.

    One thing to note, you can pass variables to your PRINT_START macro. I pass it the nozzle and bed temp. Here is how I did it in Prusa Slicer or SuperSlicer:
    PRINT_START BED_TEMP=[first_layer_bed_temperature] PRINT_TEMP=[first_layer_temperature[initial_extruder]]

Yeah, I was a bit confused because I did see some Z-hop when I activate it in a slicer software but I think it is not implemented in Klipper firmware. I wasn't sure about that that's why I asked your opinion. Btw I would be really happy if you could make a video about combing,acceleration and jerk in cura oder other slicer software. I couldn't find a helpful video about those functions. Just an idea for the next videos ;) cheers

    Doing the exact steps on an ender 3 v2 printer will result in a connection problem. For Ender 3V2 printers you need to set the baud rate to 115200 in the make menu and printer.cfg to actually be able to connect....

    Hi Chris, thanks a lot for this video. Lots of good information and well explained (as usual) :). I am complete Klipper newbie and currently trying to upgrade my home-built IDEX from Repetier 1.x to Klipper. The mainboard is Ultratronics Pro 1.0. It is rather rear one and I was able to find only a basic Klipper config for it. So I am building printer.cfg on my own. I was able to compile and flash firmware via USB port and established connectivity from Octoprint. It says "connected" and reads firmware version but then says - "Printer is not ready. The klippy host software is attempting to connect. Please retry in a few moments." Following your advice from another video I started from configuring thermistor pins of both extruders and heated bed but so far no success. The temp shows 0 and I am getting the same error. So, I have 2 questions to you.
    - I know that Klipper allows to modify config and applies it as soon as it restarts, but is that enough when changing pin assignments or I need to recompile and upload new flash?
    - Can I use MCU pin numbers in printer.cfg or need to enter corresponding names like PC28. If the names are preferred, there should be a file mapping them to pins for my mcu. Do you know where should I check if such file exists for my board?
    Thanks

    • @bomai559
      @bomai559 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      After couple of hours troubleshooting I can now answer my 1st question - pin changes are applied without re-flashing firmware. Pin names are accepted but where are they mapped to the actual pin numbers remains unclear. Also, I was able to solve mcu connectivity problem by adding baud: 115200 to [mcu] section of the config file.
      Thanks

    • @ChrisRiley
      @ChrisRiley  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! Yes, first question, correct, pin changes are applied. The pin numbers are really hard to figure out with a schematic. I did find this, if this is your board those A1/D10 pin assignments the guide lists should work in the config. reprapworld.com/documentation/datasheet_ultratronics10_05.pdf

    • @ogmaker
      @ogmaker ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For me Klipper provides speed, multi-motor control, and print quality that I was not able to get using Marlin. The flexibility of not having to compile firmware to just change something or extend the capabilities is worth the change alone. I still run a Marlin printer (Prusa) . It does ok. No complaints. However, I can print significantly faster with higher quality (less artifacts) on my other Klipper-based printers. Been 3D printing since 2015... YMMV

      @alex-gx4ph ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right a modern board might be able to do the same calculations as klipper does right now on the SBC. But klipper has a lot of other benefits:
      - Multi MCU support for large configuration
      - That includes now the CAN toolhead boards that makes wiring much easier
      - The custom macro system is a very powerful tool.
      - Do configuration changes nearly on the fly
      That are some of the benefits beside good print quality at high speed

    Hi Chris, great video for beginners. I am not sure if you covered this, but maybe you could add small example where and how to find pinout for your board? That it's usually in documentation from board manufacturer, like PDF file on github and ho to map pins to configuration. Or is it too advanced compared to taking example configuration?
    While adding just PRINT_START in Start G-code section is slicer may be sufficient, it may happen that somebody copypastes macro from somewhere which does not have default values for bed and hotend temperatures (most don't). Slicer then adds temperature control wherever it likes, often times resulting in printer cooling down immediately after heat up and throwing errors about extruding below minimum temp 🙂 In that case it is necessary to pass variables like hotend and bed temperature from slicer to Klipper macro, by adding some extra words behind PRINT_START. It is good practice in general. This article explains what and why needs to be done: github.com/AndrewEllis93/Print-Tuning-Guide/blob/main/articles/passing_slicer_variables.md Hope it helps somebody 🙂

    • @ChrisRiley

      It's usually an issue with the permissions for the gcode directory. It has changed over the last couple of updates. In you config, check the virtual SD card path.

      @@ChrisRiley Hi, thanks for the reply. After some more digging, I've actually found a way to get what I needed.
      There's also a tool for generating Klipper macros by a guy called GAB3D. If you just search for "Klipper macro generator", it should be the first result that comes up.
      For now, I've got a "basic" setup that will do a prime line with the slicer settings (you pass them in as parameters in the start G-Code). It does a horizontal one across Y instead of vertical (as in, it actually moves X from left to right instead of Y front to back), but I'll change it in the future by altering the G-Code in that macro.

      If someone uses the same PRINT_END macro I use, be mindful that the raise of Z by 10mm is "stupid" atm, as in it doesn't do any checks or anything, it just moves up.
      Gonna try to figure out how to query the current position and using some conditionals move only if it actually can and Z isn't at the top already (like when you print something full volume o near for example), but that's still on my to-do list as Python isn't exactly my cup of tea and I don't really like the syntax. More of a C/Java guy, but I'll eventually bring myself to dealing with this too sometime in the future. For now I just keep that in mind and it works for what I need.

I had to use this serial: /dev/serial/by-path/platform-fd500000.pcie-pci-0000:01:00.0-usb-0:1.2:1.0-port0, to get it connected to the MCU. Bought another, ender 3 V2 Neo. Now this one is a funny one. I've successfully flashed a spare SKR 1.4 board, it returns a reply after issuing ls /dev/serial/by-id/* request. However, the E3V2 just states: "No mcu found! MCU either not connected or not detected." What could I be doing wrong? On the Ender I can reflash Marlin, apparently, as many times as I want. No solution, but Creality apparently changed the mcu on some E3V2's to GD32F303. I've tried to flash using the "Disable SWD at startup (For GiagDevice stm32f103 clones)", but again no joy. It could be a GPIO pin issue, what board do you have? Check the setting in the config files. github.com/Klipper3d/klipper/tree/master/config

    Please update klipper before you do your firmware, otherwise you may need to flash 2 times.

      Yes, you can run either of those from your Linux machine. The only good thing about the Pi is it is dedicated. I always find when I try to run something from my PC, something happens, like it reboots or a process slow the gcode streaming. The Pi just seems to work better.
