Use a drill with a wood spade bit with an extension added to the spade bit. Drill holes in it all over(the honeycomb) to break it up and then use a shop vac to clean it out. Way less work.
Hey dude, it would have been better to remove the whole pipe before hammering because you are putting an incredible amount of force against the whole pipe going to the headers which can cause an exhaust leak and damaged pipes/headers...I know because I did that with my integra back in the day

No disrespect, but if somebody tries that and their manifold studs and nuts are rusted to shit they might end up with an exhaust leak lol. No you can't add a test pipe to these vehicles because the cat is welded to the y pipe only way to add a pipe is to cut the cat out and weld a new pipe in.

i used your advice and decided to unbolt my primary cat without gutting it yet to see how it sounds on my stock genesis coupe. i took it for a spin after and it was UNBELIEVABLE. The car was misfiring badly and had a bad trans and i got it all fixed but it was super slow being my first stock genesis coupe and the cats underneath where there is no o2 had to be hella clogged. it sounds like i have an external wastegate dumping to atmosphere. And the MOST important part. the car is literally pulling soo hard now i couldn't believe it. never threw me in my seat now it is. it literally feels like it gained 40 hp. it sounds like it has over 300+hp lol. going to gut the both cats out then install it back into the muffler later on.

You too can have a permanent p0420 code not be able to register/pass emissions. Many cars used the down stream sensor for fuel trim, so you can expect to make less power and get worse fuel economy without a new pcm and a custom tune.
Have decatted pretty much every car I’ve owned, and can say I’ve never lost any power. If anything I’ve gained slightly. And the code is easily erased. As for passing emissions, there are countless garages that will pass it for a bit of extra cash
The Pre cat O2 sensor is the one that checks the AFR. The downstream sensor is easy to trick with the right spacer without a retune or aftermarket ECM. Without a cat or a hollowed out cat you gain a few HP and at least 1-3 more MPG
If you put true straight pipes and a cold air intake on a stock car or even turboed car it will not do anything. You need to get a tune for it to be beneficial

have you noticed you don't see many muffler shops these days? That is because cars are equipped with catalytic converters. They prevent the formation of sulfuric acid and condensates in the exhaust which used to rust out mufflers and tail pipes.
Correction. The exhaust cycle and the intake cycle are closed circuit. In other words, you can run a straight pipe with high flow headers and it won’t make a single difference to the intake of “more air.” The cylinders, bore, and stroke are the determining factor to how much gets sucked in and how much gets pressed out.
If a cat is restricting the flow and you convert it to a free flowing system the intake will naturally be sucking in more air as the exhaust is ABLE to pump out more then before, think of it as a cigarette with out a filter, when you hit it it’s way less restrictive even though you are exerting the same force if not less with your mouth compared to hitting one with a filter.
You are correct in that the system will never be able to go beyond 100% maximum intake. What you have failed to account for is that things like this can reduce your systems ability to perform at that maximum. This isnt going from 100% to 105% for more power, its bringing the system up from 90% back to 95%.
Filter your nose and mouth with a rag and and tell me the result. It doesn't matter how much volume your lungs have... if the air can't flow due to exhaust restriction, it's severely impacted
To be perfectly honest with you all this car has 3 catalytic converters the one he just hollowed out was just the back one which means that the first 2 converters receive all of the congestion first. With out gutting all 3 you really haven't done anything. If you want real horsepower 🐎 gains you have to do all 3. Besides all of the cheap Nissan owners who let they're oxygen sensors go bad and not change them and continue to drive with the check engine light on for years converters stopped up anyway and probably already got burned valves and a permanent missfire

Doing this has increased hp on my motorized bicycle dramatically, top speed and acceleration. It's because there's less back pressure pushing against the pistons exhaust stroke. Not to get into if any back pressure is necessary, but less is better in this case for getting more power.

The extent of which depends on the stroke type and other characteristics of the engine.
Also re-reading this. The original comment sounds more idiotic the older I get. Saying they're two separate systems is so foul. Every system in an engine relates to every other system. From the intake to the headers, from the coolant system to the pistons. They all are integral and affect eachother
Thanks for the information....I deleted my whole exhaust so theres no pipes running off of the cats and I wanted to also remove my cats for my own personal reason(s). I pretty much would only have the headers on the motor and I'm hearing that I could bend something in the motor or have warping so I was just scared to follow through with removing the cats

You need to put a straight pipe in place of the cat and you need to delete the egr system with a block of plat also remove the smog pump if you have one and install o2 sensor plugs which can be purchased on ebay then you will be ok in the state of MA you can do this if you car is at least 15 years old or older because they do not require emissions testings as long as they are quite so you have to leave the resonator and muffler alone.
Chuck Taylor problem with rock auto or similar catalytic converters is that they are garbage. I have installed off brand cats for customers and had them accuse me of not doing the repair because their cel would come back on in a week. Aftermarket cats use less than the minimum required to get the job done

Thats not going to disrupt scavenging lmao. All it will do is slightly reduce backpresure. If he had a larger diameter exhaust pupe then yes it would reduce scavenging by a small amount but would reduce back pressure by a lot. It helps to add a 4-1 or a 4-2-1 manifold to optimize it
Do you know you can rinse the Cat out for better performance? It's a bandaid but it can work. Better yet just weld a piece in and sell the converter for scrap..
Yes wear a mask. I had a 1983 Saab 900 turbo that I used a 1 1/2 inch wood spade bit to cut a core through the center of the honeycomb cat . Left remainder there. Car ran a lot stronger for next 100K miles but old air cooled turbos only lasted 65K miles. I abused the crap out of the motor as under back seat could turn up boost and I ran 104 Octane booster . Ate up Corvettes , Mustangs and Camaros back then . Also ate up front tires every 20K miles but worth it to see the look on Billy Bob's face.
You’re not gaining any horsepower without a tune for being catless, all you’re doing is increasing the amount of times you’re going to see your check engine light.
If there is no downstream O2 sensor behind the cat, it won't throw a code or lower performance. Those only happen when altering cats infront of the downstream as it'll not only throw a code, but also alter the afr because it believes there is still a cat and the O2 is bad. For example, when I had a bad leak infront of my downstream O2, my truck ran very rich and would even flood with gas at times.
I'm going to make a correction...deleting the cat only improves outgoing gases, not incoming air. You still need to modify intake if you want it to "inhale" more.
But this will create an engine trouble light as well as make your engine less efficient b/c the computer won't know how to adjust your fuel ratio based on the O2 sensor readings... Is there a way to trick the computer?

The CAT is a modern wonder, in that it keeps the air clean by converting HCs, NOx and CO to H2O and CO2. It does work, and it's worth using. I used to do that dump stuff years ago until I realized how important the invention is. You can even get high flow cats for racing. You will not gain any horsepower by destroying the CAT. Extra airflow for a factory engine will not make any more horsepower. Unless the engine has a different cam (for more airflow at higher speeds) and programmed to inject more fuel, the engine will not produce more horsepower.

@@BlessedGamingEZ [See my comment I edited above, before you replied to it.] All vehicles I've checked have o2 Sensors on either side of the cats, even if the one is by/closer to the manifold. That's how the ECM knows if the cats are working, or if they're plugged or melted even if just partially, by reading the temps. I mean that's why they're set up like that. Correct? Now to clean: I'm gonna try removing the o2 Senor before the cats & pour enough cleaner to fill the pipe loosen up & let it set over night [cold] so if it blows through after I start the vehicle, it should push all the liquid out through the cat.

Anything over 25 yrs in NY is exempt. Things rot out here, had to buy a new cat for my 96 Explorer, it had a hole. Probably could have welded it , looked pristine inside. Cats in NY and CA cost a fucking fortune too. There is a special part number and it has to be certified. Technically you fail inspection if the numbers aren't visible.

On that car that is a sub cat. Not even monitored. Your main cats are part of you exhaust manifolds. That sub cat can be removed and your PCM would never know it. Besides, with today's design and technologies, catalytic convertors barely effect exhaust performance.

Realized this will be an hour or so. This particular one is over a foot in length of honeycomb. I have pry bar and large hammer. A screw driver maybe ok for small cats. Straight pipe easy if you find one for it.i may chizel just half.maybe half less restricted? Maybe. First time I tried
You should have said it’s illegal in all states be cause it is lol. There are a lot of states that don’t do emissions checks so you can get away with it but if you get caught then you’re breaking federal and state law. Because even though there are no emissions checks it’s still illegal. Plus another hint if you wrap exhaust back to the first oxy sensor and install a oxygen sensor defouler you can clear nearly every check engine light that has anything to do with exhaust emissions because it will come on.
why go through all that ? back in 2000 i removed mine saved it off a brand new VW Jetta VR6 and just put a larger pipe there with reduced ends , cut a hole where O2 sensor goes welded a nut that fit the sensor threads put it on welding no clamps and used a what i called a reducer / think they sell them as spark plug non foulers will work...tricks the ecu into thinking that the cat is working fine..by saving the cat i used it years later when i moved to a state that has emissions testing...

You are correct in that the system will never be able to go beyond 100% maximum intake.
What you have failed to account for is that things like this can reduce your systems ability to perform at that maximum.
This isnt going from 100% to 105% for more power, its bringing the system up from 90% back to 95%.
Filter your nose and mouth with a rag and and tell me the result.
It doesn't matter how much volume your lungs have... if the air can't flow due to exhaust restriction, it's severely impacted

To be perfectly honest with you all this car has 3 catalytic converters the one he just hollowed out was just the back one which means that the first 2 converters receive all of the congestion first. With out gutting all 3 you really haven't done anything. If you want real horsepower 🐎 gains you have to do all 3. Besides all of the cheap Nissan owners who let they're oxygen sensors go bad and not change them and continue to drive with the check engine light on for years converters stopped up anyway and probably already got burned valves and a permanent missfire

It's 2 separate systems that make 1 whole system. Deleting the cat, will not let more air into the engine. I would study up a bit before saying something. Don't just believe what someone once told you without verifying. 👍
Doing this has increased hp on my motorized bicycle dramatically, top speed and acceleration. It's because there's less back pressure pushing against the pistons exhaust stroke. Not to get into if any back pressure is necessary, but less is better in this case for getting more power.

@@lieutenantmikeo5979 a catalytic converter delete? Likely not, unless electronic systems are not adjusted and tell the engine "hey dude, my cat is fucked up!" Consequently sending it into limp mode, but not hurting the engine. If a tune is implemented, the engine will run BETTER. If you mean deleting the exhaust as a whole, it will damage the engine. The extent of which depends on the stroke type and other characteristics of the engine.
Also re-reading this. The original comment sounds more idiotic the older I get. Saying they're two separate systems is so foul. Every system in an engine relates to every other system. From the intake to the headers, from the coolant system to the pistons. They all are integral and affect eachother
Thanks for the information....I deleted my whole exhaust so theres no pipes running off of the cats and I wanted to also remove my cats for my own personal reason(s). I pretty much would only have the headers on the motor and I'm hearing that I could bend something in the motor or have warping so I was just scared to follow through with removing the cats

You need to put a straight pipe in place of the cat and you need to delete the egr system with a block of plat also remove the smog pump if you have one and install o2 sensor plugs which can be purchased on ebay then you will be ok in the state of MA you can do this if you car is at least 15 years old or older because they do not require emissions testings as long as they are quite so you have to leave the resonator and muffler alone.

Chuck Taylor problem with rock auto or similar catalytic converters is that they are garbage. I have installed off brand cats for customers and had them accuse me of not doing the repair because their cel would come back on in a week. Aftermarket cats use less than the minimum required to get the job done

Also on newer cars gotta worry about it throwing a code.

A test pipe is just a typical piece of exhaust pipe welded in place of a removed catalytic converter.
so you created an expansion chamber therby reducing or killing your exhaust scavenging and lowering your horsepower output. But it sounds good, right?

Thats not going to disrupt scavenging lmao. All it will do is slightly reduce backpresure. If he had a larger diameter exhaust pupe then yes it would reduce scavenging by a small amount but would reduce back pressure by a lot. It helps to add a 4-1 or a 4-2-1 manifold to optimize it

Yes wear a mask. I had a 1983 Saab 900 turbo that I used a 1 1/2 inch wood spade bit to cut a core through the center of the honeycomb cat . Left remainder there. Car ran a lot stronger for next 100K miles but old air cooled turbos only lasted 65K miles. I abused the crap out of the motor as under back seat could turn up boost and I ran 104 Octane booster . Ate up Corvettes , Mustangs and Camaros back then . Also ate up front tires every 20K miles but worth it to see the look on Billy Bob's face.

If there is no downstream O2 sensor behind the cat, it won't throw a code or lower performance. Those only happen when altering cats infront of the downstream as it'll not only throw a code, but also alter the afr because it believes there is still a cat and the O2 is bad. For example, when I had a bad leak infront of my downstream O2, my truck ran very rich and would even flood with gas at times.
I'm going to make a correction...deleting the cat only improves outgoing gases, not incoming air. You still need to modify intake if you want it to "inhale" more.

@@TristanVash38 The cvt transmissions cannot handle getting hot, that's when they start slipping, they need a transmission cooler added on to the car. They will last a long time then. That's what I did.
2004-2006 Altima’s and maxima don’t have cvt they didn’t introduce them untill 2007. So these cars with the 3.5 are pretty solid.

The CAT is a modern wonder, in that it keeps the air clean by converting HCs, NOx and CO to H2O and CO2. It does work, and it's worth using. I used to do that dump stuff years ago until I realized how important the invention is. You can even get high flow cats for racing. You will not gain any horsepower by destroying the CAT. Extra airflow for a factory engine will not make any more horsepower. Unless the engine has a different cam (for more airflow at higher speeds) and programmed to inject more fuel, the engine will not produce more horsepower.
How bout spraying lacquer thinner in to the cat? Through a hole upsream.

Monty Daniels 02 sensors are on the pipe before the cat and sometimes on each exhaust manifold

That's how the ECM knows if the cats are working, or if they're plugged or melted even if just partially, by reading the temps. I mean that's why they're set up like that. Correct? Now to clean: I'm gonna try removing the o2 Senor before the cats & pour enough cleaner to fill the pipe loosen up & let it set over night [cold] so if it blows through after I start the vehicle, it should push all the liquid out through the cat.
Cats are filled with PLATINUM , Wich is more valuable than gold.... This is why the junkyards want your vehicle with the stock exhaust on it....
They make a killing off that ONE item.

The cat could certainly disintegrate. The exhaust system would have to be removed and inspected to verity. They can't prove he did it. Not saying its right but a straight pipe is a bad idea. Anything over 25 yrs in NY is exempt. Things rot out here, had to buy a new cat for my 96 Explorer, it had a hole. Probably could have welded it , looked pristine inside. Cats in NY and CA cost a fucking fortune too. There is a special part number and it has to be certified. Technically you fail inspection if the numbers aren't visible.

On that car that is a sub cat. Not even monitored. Your main cats are part of you exhaust manifolds. That sub cat can be removed and your PCM would never know it. Besides, with today's design and technologies, catalytic convertors barely effect exhaust performance.

Great question. Uploader liked your comment and left you hanging. I just took out the catalytic completely out the car. Mine didn't look broken but barely see thru it. Started chipping away. Realized this will be an hour or so. This particular one is over a foot in length of honeycomb. I have pry bar and large hammer. A screw driver maybe ok for small cats. Straight pipe easy if you find one for it.i may chizel just half.maybe half less restricted? Maybe. First time I tried

You should have said it’s illegal in all states be cause it is lol. There are a lot of states that don’t do emissions checks so you can get away with it but if you get caught then you’re breaking federal and state law. Because even though there are no emissions checks it’s still illegal. Plus another hint if you wrap exhaust back to the first oxy sensor and install a oxygen sensor defouler you can clear nearly every check engine light that has anything to do with exhaust emissions because it will come on.

It's proven to work 90% percent of the time...Get the" O2 spacers" off Amazon or eBay.
why go through all that ? back in 2000 i removed mine saved it off a brand new VW Jetta VR6 and just put a larger pipe there with reduced ends , cut a hole where O2 sensor goes welded a nut that fit the sensor threads put it on welding no clamps and used a what i called a reducer / think they sell them as spark plug non foulers will work...tricks the ecu into thinking that the cat is working fine..by saving the cat i used it years later when i moved to a state that has emissions testing...
