      Those high performance cars backfire during rev deceleration because they're designed to do so. Some of them seem to be doing it just for fun, but the more serious high performance cars do it because fuel is being dumped in order to cool the valves and and that fuel then ignites in the exhaust. Have you never heard of this? If you still think it doesn't make sense, what better method do you propose for keeping valves cool (these cars also often have titanium intake and sodium filled exhaust valves)?

    Illegal ways to make your car faster:
    1. No muffler’s (causes backfire if not tuned)
    2. No catalytic converters (fails emissions test)
    3. Nitrous Oxide (can blow up engines, legal in some states only)
    4. Bigger fuel injectors (ecu tuning a must)

    "Never assume there is only one problem" is some of the best car advice one can get, especially for a DIY mechanic learning to work on their own rides. A lot of people work on their own cars to save time and/or money, but if youre not careful and thorough, you'll lose a lot of both. One thing my dad taught me as a kid "before you start trying to fix your own car, get a bus pass and make sure your bicycle is in good shape". We laughed, but its so true

    The "don't need back pressure" thing is especially true for turbocharged cars. You want as little restriction as possible after the turbine, otherwise the pressure will actually hurt the spooling characteristics of the turbocharger. It's why on big turbo cars, you see the catalytic converter either: replaced with a high flow racing cat, removed, or moved farther down stream to reduce restriction and improve turbo spooling. Even a small size upgrade, changing to a lower restriction exhaust has improved responsiveness due to letting that turbo spool more rapidly.

      Agreed, just bought an X5 M twin turbo V-8 all tricked out for the track. It has after market straight pipes that are 1.5" larger than the stock 'M racing package' that came on it. wouldn't a blow off valve help as an alternative to the muffler change?

    • @ajkooper
      @ajkooper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@LynchMob09R no, since the blow off's function is just to prevent pressure buildup in the intake to either keep the turbine spinning after you let go of the gas pedal and close the throttle valve, or limit the maximum pressure to keep your engine in 1 piece. Back pressure in the muffler will have an effect on how much the turbine can spin or keep spinning since the exhaust pressure and flow is the active force that makes the turbine spin.

    A lot of "high performance" mufflers are designed to have higher flow rates to reduce the negative effects a muffler has on your car. The downside is that they won't be as quiet as a typical muffler and most are dramatically more expensive than typical mufflers. But sometimes halfway is the best you can legally get.

    • @bradgriffith4231

      Magna Flow muffs are excellent. Straight thruogh perforated tube with a non-deteriorating sound absorbtion material. No drone & minimally increase exhaust volume. I've run them for 30 years. ALL mufflers with baffles, even "high performance" versions are detrimental to performance. It's called "fluid dynamics" & a common example are rocks in a stream. Every rock disrupts smooth flow & the same thing happens in an exhaust. The newer cats are very minimally restrictive.

This vehicle catalytic converter cost a lot for OEM ones. I just drove it like that for a few years and now it had passed smog check. I had used the thinner Scotty had recommended when I first got my car, but it didn't work at the time. So l do the European cleaning😁 Scotty had recommended. Thank you for that explanation about back pressure. I can’t stand it when I get on forums trying to research a certain mod for my 392 challenger and I constantly see guys scared to do certain mods because “it’ll reduce the back pressure.” The only engine to my knowledge that needs back pressure is a diesel motor.

    • @passattdise
      @passattdise 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only time back pressure is a hindrance is if you run your engine at full throttle, all the time. That's hardly the case in a car on the street used for transportation. You're lucky if you use 10 to 15 HP going down the freeway on a clean aerodynamic car on level ground. That's nothing when the engine can make 300 -600 hp. Even Turbochargers make a lot of back pressure, by a factor of 3:1 on the turbine side vs the compressor side. So if you're making 25# of boost on the compressor side of a turbo diesel, there's about 75# of back pressure on the turbine exhaust side. Can't get one without the other. Don't say it's bad, lots of vehicles run turbochargers and run full throttle applications, and the back pressure on the exhaust does no harm.

    Minor correction: the SAAB Sonett had either a three-cylinder two-stroke engine, or a V4, four-stroke engine sourced from Ford. A long time ago I really wanted a two-stroke Sonett but I never saw one. I did have a '67 SAAB 96 Monte Carlo, and that model's high-performance two-stroke engine (60 HP!) had three carburetors (the highest carburetor-to-cylinder ratio of any car I ever owned). I don't know if the two-stroke Sonett came with the triple-carb engine, but as it was a sports car my guess is that it did.

    • @stevewales9911

      Yes, the V4 used in late 60s to mid 70s SAABs, was a German Ford engine built in Cologne and introduced in 1962, and powered the Ford Taunus.
      I learned to drive in my dad's 68 SAAB 96. He had been interested in the Sonett II which were all 3 cylinder 2 strokes. But he was too tall to sit in it.
      His two previous cars, a Lloyd (British) and a DKW (German, one of the 4 companies that merged to eventually form Audi, hence 4 interlocking ring logo) were both 2 stroke, fwd. The 68 SAAB 96 was available with either the 3 cylinder 2 stroke or the V4 4 stroke. He opted for the larger displacement V4.
      Btw the Sonett pic Scottie showed was of a Sonett III, which were all V4 4 strokes

    There is a devise that is used to keep a turbo spooled up by causing the engine to backfire. That backfire which you may have seen is due to an anti lag system or a misfiring system in tuner terms. The anti Lag system keeps the turbo spooled up even when you are not on throttle so that after you exit a corner and step back on the accelerator you have that boost ready for you and hence eliminating turbo lag.

    As a mechanic I've noticed a lot of cars that come in that have nothing but part strong anthem so the number one rule is to find somebody can trouble shoot very good. I remember a car coming in, with a high idle, the poor girl had taken the car to a couple of shops before she brought to me. The first thing I did was look at the engine. I noticed a new TPS sensor installed. I turned the engine off, put my multimeter on the tps sensor. The sensor would only go from 0 to 2.5 ohms. I removed the sensor and tested the sensor. The sensor off the car went from 0 to 5 ohms. Which means the sensor is good. Then I checked the actuator on the. It moved smoothly. So as I was installing the tops sensor, I made sure I installed the Tps at the half way point on the car. After installing the tps sensor on the car. As I moved the tps from close to open, I saw 0 to 5 ohms on my meter. I plugged the sensor back in, started the car. When the computer went to close loop, the engine dropped down and was purring like a kitty. Even though the car had a check engine light on, I never plugged my scan tool in. But when I looked at the dash, the check engine light was off. I did a scan, just like I figured, no codes. Still checked the engine out. Compress test, vacuum check, pressure coolant check. Engine was sound. Our shop did not do transmissions. After the road test, the paperwork taking care of, the happy smile on her face was priceless and I even got a hug. So take your time and learn how to troubleshoot.

    Well scotty youre not always right. Just to catch you up todays car scene. People are making their car "backfire" its call "pops N Bangs tune". The engines are tuned good. They just tune in it to pop and bang. Basically dumping gas in the exhaust and then igniting it for bangs. Ive seen cars run 7 seconds in the 1/4 mile with pops anf bangs tune so nobody say well if its backfiring its not running right. Well if running a 4 cyl minivan with turboed k24 motor down the quarter mile track in 7 seconds then ill take "not running right" lol

    • @stanleyhampton7185

      Unburned gasoline that explodes in the exhaust system can damage the muffler and catalytic. Muffler can burst at the seams, Catalytic can burst, or core can be damaged. Rusty pipes that would otherwise last a while longer can burst. Why anyone would intentionally risk this makes no sense. If you have backfire, the cause should be found and resolved. I had a new muffler burst due to exhaust explosion.
      Even under adverse conditions in which older engines would tend to backfire, modern engines are less likely to do this. They have knock sensors that sense knock or back fire. They retard the spark timing to prevent the knocking. But you will not know that this is happening, except performance and fuel economy could be reduced. A fancy OBD scanner that shows live codes might tell you if spark time is being retarded.

Once that muffler was going bad though I took it someplace to get changed. They told me that they had to cut it off as there was an adapter welded on. Adapter? Ha it was just part of the previous muffler.

    Good info as always Scotty, but I wanna know if there is a way to reprogram the injectors on my 2016 Frontier SV ? It's 310hp mpg is crap, would it be possible to knock it down to say 250 or less & up the mpg ? Thanx.

      No.... your mpg is crap because the car wasn't built with an aerodynamic body and has a high coefficient of drag in the body design. It just doesn't push air out of the way very well at highway speeds.

    Read a story while back that several car renting businesses in the EU found increasing numbers of cars coming back without the converter.
    Sometimes we even have crime waves for specific things; Airbags like 5 years back, converters was the big thing 2 years back

    I had car in Ontario, Canada, many years ago that was modified to use pure natural gas. So the fuel was totally ionized, yet the catalytic converter became clogged, and it wouldn't go more than 35 mph. A mechanic removed the innards and it ran good. I guess that it was legal, but now in retrospect I am unsure if it was.

      That's weird, CNG converted cars are fairly common here and none of them have cat issues.

      not sure how many years are many, but as of 20 years ago it would be illegal (though hollowing out a cat is a common practice). That is probably why the mechanic hollowed it out, rather then straight pipe it. A CNG engine is technically a low emission engine anyway, which is why you were probably able to get away with it.
