I say that because while we all love cars, not everyone knows the mechanical side of it all, and Zach does it in a way anyone can understand. Good job Zach! 👏

most of his knowledge is just a lot of research and experience. I could even say it is mostly scripted but I think he does know what he's doing.
@@therapgame1091 I think it was mentioned that Zach was actually a mechanic, which definitely helps. As a mechanic/tech myself he's been bang on with everything he says, so I definitely would believe it. There's definitely a big difference between a mechanic who can do the work, and one who can explain it in a way that all can understand. Definitely helps when you're talking to customers, especially customers who don't know how their vehicles work. I'd hire Zach in a heartbeat for just that reason

Don't worry man I started when I was 15 learning mechanic with 4 of my friends. We all bought 5.0 mustang and would be blowing engines left and right. We started to rebuild our engine until we learned. I am now 31 and I have never taken a car to a mechanic for anything. And I do crazy stuff to our cars. I even learn how to paint cars. And yes all of the fluids in my car are like brand new before I replaced them. My brother's get mad at me for switching out the oil when it looks like I just barely put it in.

My welding instructor told me to never stand in front of the regulator handle when opening a pressure vessel. Because he was a trade welder for 20 years and he had seen one catastrophically fail blowing the t handle into the wall. He taught every student that came through his course really consise safety rules. Mr Elton you were a master RIP.

Im currently in welding and fab class in my college. One time I seen a kid try to punch a hole in a piece of hardened steel. It fractured and one of the pieces wedged itself in the cinderblock wall. The kid was find but he almost fucking killed himself
I like how Zach teaches. He knows how to get information across, including some pretty niche stuff without sounding superior. It's a legitimate skill that not a lot of people have such fluency with. But Zach is just a super charismatic dude, so it's not surprising that he teaches so well.

Even just going from regular to hi flow cats, was by far the best bolt on mod I did power wise. The only mod where I legitimately felt a noticeable gain, and that was just swapping to hi flow cats.

basically yeah I'm British too people just drive ride looking for s target unless you have a garage or secure drive way but nobody people have garages in this country since are houses are tiny whilst American houses average double the size and they usually have a garage or actual drive way

True, without the boost correction with the cat this would've been an inconclusive/unfinished video. When they mimicked the boost it really showed how little a difference the cat delete really made. I wouldn't do it for a measly 5hp increase.
Karen. It's just 5hp. It would be worth it with a full exhaust change because the full power gain can be significant. The combo of better intake and cat-back exhaust will give largely noticeable performance gains because the engine with respirate better.
@2D well they did switch back and forth relatively easy. Its not impossible to see you deleting the cat on race day and slapping it back on afterwards. 5 has isn't much until you're pit against a car that has more or less the same hp as yours.
@2D exactly my point. Sometimes you have to come to a compromise. If you track your car daily. Keep your straight pipe on and don't daily drive it. If you track it once every now and again, and your grease your knucks like you wash your hands, deleting your cat on track day shouldn't be a huge deal.

It is worth it for older cars that need ZDDP added to the oil. It is said it will probably clog up catalytic converters. But old flat tappet engines really do need the zinc.

I've driven a 270hp Miata, and yeah, can confirm that its pretty impressive
That amount is perfect. Still grippy and not too much but a hell a lot of fun. 500bhp is silly, where can you actually put that down. The Miata is about going down fast country lanes, not highway
Zach is by far my favourite Donut host. He just seems so at home with all things internal combustion.
As someone who works for a high end welding company I would like to make one tiny correction, you don't necessarily need co2 to weld. You can lay down some pretty nice beads with just argon. However Co2 mixes are used in certain situations such as welding carbon steel or doing a carbon build up. Nitrogen can also be used for specific purposes as well. Love the Vid Zack.

You guys are life saver been watching some of your turbo videos for the miata and leanered alot been trying to find a turbo for my 2018 civic it's a 2.0 6speed. It's been really hard to find the right one since I didn't know to much.
One tip about the band saw... If you keep your guide wheels as close to the material as you can, you reduce the blades penchance to wander while in the cut and should produce straighter cuts. Abviously as you mentioned, the cheaper the saw the worse the cut quality, but this should help get it as good as it can be!

Also dumbing it down to anyone can understand and explain the basics in a very understandable way is very impressive, I only say this is because I had a stroke a couple years ago and I don't understand directions very well but this I can understand. Kudos!

He knows the importance of doing the research before hand. He also took the time to invest and learn a core set of skills.
If I remember correctly, he did auto shop in school at a local college or something so he knows a lot of the actual mechanics behind why/how things work, but as I can tell you from experience, many of these things are things you actually just pick up along the way the more you work on cars. Zach just has the added benefit of an actual formal education and the backing of a solid car enthusiast set of friends that can all supplement his skills/knowledge. I’ll tell you right now, the biggest help/advantage you can get when getting into workin on your own cars is to surround yourself with friends that also work on their own cars. Everyone specializes in something and everyone learns form the others. It’s great.

Wrapping yourself with the cable is something you should never do because of strong magnetic field it produces. So that was a bad advice anyway...
You found the choke point of the waste gate. This is also called sonic limit. Increasing pressure from the catalytic converter raises both speed of sound (sonic limit) and density. Hidden in the mix is mass flow.
Yes, back pressure is a bad thing. Mass flow a good thing.

wear gloves. the light generated is like a more concentrated version of sunlight. it can burn you.
have proper ventilation on coated metals. especially galvanized.
other wise a great beginner tutorial. you can absolutely do what zack did with a $200 flux core 110v mig welder from harbor freight jsut by watching this video.

@@Lofi.z34 I used a the harbor freight titanium Mig welder for the last two years before the gun died on me and I upgraded to a Miller. Don’t let internet hype get to you, harbor freight welders aren’t that bad at all. I started my welding buisness with mine. Well worth the $400

I mean, yeah, but this was a terrible choice of car for this test. The exhaust restriction on such a small engine is really negligible. it matters for more for larger or more powerful engines, where a cat delete is definitely worth it for more power, and that’s not even talking about the safety of reducing egts and back pressure. The cats on new cars are very restrictive to meet tightening emissions regulations (and ridiculously expensive), at the oem I work for we are having trouble even meeting last year’s power and torque ratings on the same engines.

This is why I'm here. Not a car guy (live in Manhattan, don't even own one)... I found Donut based on the Tool Party episode about rust removal, stuck around because Zach, Jeremiah, and Justin were super entertaining in that episode. Welding is one of those tasks that seems really intimidating until you actually start to learn to do it. For builders it opens up a whole new world once you take the time to figure it out. Your welds dont even have to be pretty, just strong.
You speak the truth. I practiced for a few months with my first MIG welder and it really let's you graduate from bolting things together to legit building things yourself once you get the hang of it. Opens all kinds of doors as far as custom work.
A lot of off-roader people I talk to say that starting by fabricating bumpers and rock sliders and such that don't need to be pretty, just functional, is a great place to start. And your first few will look ugly and you will be self motivated to get better at it lol
Yes that’s very much true. I’m a welding student, currently working on my highschool endorsement. And yeah, when you look at welding, it seems harder than it actually is. The terms, and machines you use is quite different than your average mechanic’s work shop. When you make a weld, it’s true that you really need to make sure the weld is strong. I’ve met plenty of welders that thought the welds had to look good too, and then took a grinder to said weld. They completely ruined a perfectly strong weld, because of a simple misunderstanding. The main thing to worry about is making it strong, but it’s ok can make it look good with a strong weld too. But it takes quite a bit more skill, than just grazing over learning welding basics.
Grinder and paint make me the welder I ain’t jk don’t take my advice but true to an extent if your welding for real on the big time weld inspection will hit you if your weld isn’t right ... worm tracks penetration there is more to it the farther you get involved with it but mig is good for any diy junk these days tig and stick are where the moneys at
TBH Welds almost never look pretty, that is why a grinder and paint is a welder's best friend as it will get rid of the ugly and make them welds look niiiiice. I learned Mig and Tig, and I prefer Tig as it makes much less of a mess, but Mig is so much faster and easier lol.
I've done alot of R/R on aircraft parts over the years. Seeing great seam welds. And watching Zach seams were actually pretty close by comparison.

The law doesn't grant people the right to remove emissions control equipment "for track days". People aren't allowed to remove/modify emissions control equipment on street cars. Period. This is literally an example of why the EPA has opted to crack down on this stuff... let the registration lapse, pull the plate off, transport it on a trailer then it's fair game.

@@BTrain-is8ch In my state, you are not allowed to have an Unregistered Vechile, Period. Doesnt matter if its Offroad/Track only, has to be registered and have plates, even if it doesnt run.
The EPA also didnt "Crack Down" they have been raiding and shit since the 80s, the news is making it out like this is some new thing, its not. The EPA doesnt want you to have a Race Car, they dont want the NRHA, they dont want Nascar, they want everyone in Teslas and Prius's. The fact we still have them still, is a testament of those fighting the never ending battle.
They also dont take into account that the Electricity needed to power everyone with electric cars, would cause more issues than the Gas cars do now. They have unfeasible Ideas, and logic based on Fear and not data. That is unless, everyone went to Solar/Wind power to power all the Cars, because that just worked so well for Texas.

@@cyberlocc I know nothing has changed. I know the EPA does this periodically. I've watched a few rounds of it and seen the RPM act come up each time. The EPA is in fact cracking down on it right now because they are actively going after brands/companies that sell/install/etc parts marked "for off road/closed course use only" that end up on street vehicles. I'm aware that there's no new law and the stuff they are dealing with has been illegal for decades.
Anyway, the EPA doesn't care about legitimate race vehicles because they are so rare as to be irrelevant.

No MIG is fine. Why bother with the additional headache with TIG. It's a test pipe, it's not hold pressure, not holding any weight, nor does it need to pass any AWS or any other wps protocol/inspection. No one is going to see it or really give a shit what it looks like in the end.

He’s really good at welding, a lot of correct patience, and beautiful 45 degree slant angles to connect the smaller piece to the larger with a lot more base around it.

Very interesting and professionally measured test. I have certainly assumed that no cat is better than an old cat (or maybe even new cat) . I let a new cat work while it can, don't need another one. I suspect that the benefits of the "test tube" are maximized at top rpm.

Don't own a VQ motor, but one thing many of forget is that if you do a cat delete, a resonator is a must

@@BigUriel yeah pretty much any Americans other than those in Canada. Mandatory vehicle inspections are bullshit and I'd refuse to live anywhere that has them. If your lawmakers are dumb enough to think vehicles are a large factor in co2 pollution than car inspections are probably the least of your worries
For me it's because I still want a little back pressure so I don't strain the header mainly because I've been there. Also I don't like to have more volume than tone. Just want that tad bit of extra power when I swap the exhaust system out

Great video! Used to have a mk2.5 MX5 2004 from new had it a couple of years but loved that car! Had the bullet proof 1.6l which was more reliable than the 1.8l version which is why I chose that from factory and not much different out the factory cos the lightness of the car! Went BMWs after cutting my teeth on that for 2 and a half years but miss that car ever since I SERIOUSLY want another one but the rust issues on them especially in England are a nightmare they're getting scrapped left right and centre over here but if you're prepared to do £1000/1500usd of welding on them they can be saved in a lot of cases, but it's a big job and then you gotta get the respray etc so you're throwing money at em for sure unless you get one that's been garaged all its life and never seen water or salt and they're like rocking horse shite and command £6-15k. Btw you can't decat them legally in Britain cos the emissions test on the annual MOT they have to pass, so great video especially for over here!

I've always ran an external wastegate with no cat, so maybe that's why I'm able to control boost easily without creep, except when I had my smaller turbo trying to push it to it's limit, usually getting a couple pounds of creep

It would be really interesting to see the stock cat compared to a high-flow aftermarket one. And then compare that to the test pipe after you fix the boost creep issue.
I believe StreetFX from Australia did a car vs no cat vs hi-flow on their 800~ HP Supra. Cat delete added fuck all power. Not worth a 10k fine down under. Smells like shit as well.
@Shndon430 Hurtado high flow cats are designed to have a negligible impact on flow compared to a straight pipe. Much higher flow than normal cats, which themselves typically flow better than mufflers.
@@Phymatic There is not a Cat in existence that can handle 800HP engine, so that doesnt add up.
The highest HP cat you can get is 700 for a kooks green. After that, you will melt them constantly, they have to be removed pushing past that point. Lots of people have even fried kooks at 700hp.

Their Supra was not running a cat to begin with but they added one for the video to see the real world difference. IIRC they lost like 6 WHP from adding it. I kind of recall them being high 700 WHP maybe just over 800.

Just a point on the test - its costing you power to get that same boost level with the cat on in the first place so even though you end up at the same boost level, you're using more fuel to get there.
Its the same reason it doesn't just boost creep as soon as you command more boost with the cat back on.
Its not a big issue but you would probably be making another 5-10hp or so with the same amount of effort going in before the cat so the gain in reality is going to be more like 15hp overall.
If you want to see what percentage it is you can read the fuel used vs power created then extrapolate that over the power curve. It will be pretty close.

The cat delete making big power gains comes from the early pellet type cats that were much, much more restrictive than the modern honeycomb type cats. Try this experiment with an old Dodge turbo from the '80s and you will understand why the cat delete trend started.
the cats on new camaros and corvettes are almost NEVER ever deleted in any performance application because they are designed so well there is simply no reason to delete them.

@everyday tenor It being street legal depends on where you live. If there's no emissions testing which is far more common than people seem to realize then it's worth it if you have the coin.
For future reference. Anything less than 80% argon will not support a plasma stream when you're welding heavier metals when MIG welding. If you will use at least 90%, and I've used up to 98,2, but frequently 92,8 argon co2, you can still use that gas for TIG welding.
I have found that if you take a little bit of time to understand some of the processes and think out of the box a little bit. MIG welding will do as clean a job if not cleaner and much quicker than TIG welding. I have actually done stick welding on 14 gauge stainless that was indistinguishable from a TIG weld. But that was when I was in practice. I might have to practice a little bit to copy that procedure. Most people, even some of the so-called experts, do not have a clue what they're doing especially when they're welding large panels of metal. There are some very simple procedures for keeping them from warping for instance.
My college car/winter beater mobile was a 1986 Chevy cavalier with 100,000 miles on the four-cylinder 2.0 engine. Very good running car but the Cadillac converter somehow shattered inside of it housing and immediately I noticed lack of power. Since I just got it inspected I removed it and installed a straight piece of pipe and horsepower greatly increased lol

Very cool video... Welding is my next adventure and this was the best explanation of it I've seen yet.
I did this to a Crown Victoria. Was a decommissioned highway patrol car. The sound was improved a bit. But there was little to no noticable improvement. Removing the dampener from the driveshaft however, made a huge improvement on acceleration

I've read that the coating on galvanized pipe should be ground away before welding because it releases an extremely toxic gas when welded. Your pipe may be different but good to know anyway.

Part of the reason for a test pipe is it increases boost lower in the rpm range which creates more power and better response. And part of the reason for " bolting " on 30 hp with a simple test pipe is it facilitates more boost.
